I almost renamed this Tag to “Tool Time Tag” – anyone remember the show Home Improvement? 😛 I was tagged for this first by Joy, and then by Shareen. Thank you!
Rules:
• Tag up to 5 people & let them know you tagged them.
• List what you want. If you got three things that are unbelievable or twenty… Don’t care, just share.
• Cannot be actual makeup, skin care, or hair care products – just the tools/gadgets you use.
You may have gathered that I love beauty tools; at last count, I have 202 eye brushes and 126 face brushes (I did a brush stash post a while back here). I’ll try my best to list items that are not discontinued!
MAQuillAGE Eyelash Curler and Shishida Seishindo Metallic Mascara Comb
I mentioned these 2 items in my Lash Week Curler, Comb, etc. post. The curler is the perfect shape for my eyes. And the lash comb is essential for combing out any mascara clumps. I use these 2 items daily.
Anna Sui brow spoolie
Not all spoolies are created equal! I supposed by now it should not be a surprise that I tried a large number of eye brow spoolies? Of all the ones I’ve tried, the Anna Sui is the softest and has the fullest bristles. I may or may not have stocked up on 5 of these when I saw them selling for $4 at Marshalls (vs the regular $11). Spoolies do have a shelf life since the wire holding the bristles will weaken over time, and eventually break at the stem.
Shu Uemura Natural Brush 10
MAC 217 Blending Brush
Sephora Pro Crease Brush #10
I’ve listed my favourites out of the 3 key eye shadow brush shapes that I think everyone should own: a flat lay down, a fluffy blending, and a domed crease. I use the flat brush to pack on colour on the lid, then use a fluffy blending to diffuse the colours, then a crease brush to blend the edges.
The Shu Uemura brush picks up product very well, and it has kept its shape through many years of use – I have a couple of these. I don’t need to say much about the MAC 217 since it’s a cult favourite – I own just 1 of the real thing but about half dozen of the dupes ranging from Coastal Scents to Sedona Lace to Trish McEvoy. The Sephora crease brush was a surprise hit – the shape and size of this one is perfect for my smaller crease and its natural hairs blend out powders very well. Even if you don’t buy these exact brushes, these basic shapes are essential in everyone’s makeup kit.
Body Shop Kabuki Brushes (L to R: blusher, foundation, bronzer, slanted)
I started out with the original Nature’s Minerals blusher brush which I found in the clearance section for $5. I loved it and went back for the larger size (second from left), and the slanted kabuki (right). These kabuki brushes are made of synthetic bristles – they’re super soft and very dense. They apply my finishing powder evenly and helps to eliminate any foundation streaks or patchiness. The outer 2 sizes are now discontinued and they’re my favourite! The bronzer brush is my least favourite of the bunch as it is the least dense. These brushes wash clean easily and keep their shape well.
Quo* Professional Blush Brush (full & travel size)
I know the pinnacle of blush brushes is the Suqqu Cheek Brush but at £85 (approx $162) it’s ridiculously overpriced. I’m more than happy with the ultra feathery softness of the Quo Professional Blush Brushes ($40). They apply blushes flawlessly and are one of the softest natural bristle brushes that I own. They’re quite pricey for a drugstore brand but they rival department store brands in terms of quality – the best part is, these brushes go on sale for 40% off on a regular basis.
*Quo is the private label brand of the main Canadian drug store, Shoppers Drug Mart.
The travel size (which was part of the “In the Spotlight” Holiday set from 2011), oddly, has a larger shaped head than the regular full sized – but they both perform wonderfully. One thing I don’t love about these brushes is the handles – they have a rubbery finish like Nars’ packaging, so they cling onto powder and look dingy easily.
Hmm, I just realized I didn’t include any nail implements – I could go on and on but I’ll stop here. I’m such a beauty tool junkie! 😛

Thank you for tagging me, girl. Looks like so much fun. Tools are important, aren’t they? And often overlooked. I will try to do this as soon as possible. xo

Thanks so much for the nomination 🙂 I’ll be doing this next week 🙂
Really like the Sephora Pro Crease Brush. Reminds me of a Zoeva one I have – they’re great for the crease! The fluffier the better.
That slanted kabuki looks awesome!!!

I look forward to reading your list! 🙂
I really want to try Zoeva – it’s a brand that I’ve only heard great things about – next year I will place an order!
Yes that slanted kabuki is amazing – I was so mad TBS discontinued it. No worries, I bought back-ups online LOL.

I’ve had the Sephora #10 brush in my cart for a long time. Should pull the trigger, eh? It looks like a good replacement for my Quo crease brush.

Yes, you should get it! They’ve changed the brush handle to black instead of the silver now. It’s one of my favourite crease brushes for sure. I’ve considered getting a back up of it, that’s how good it is!

Also, it’s NOT scratchy, unlike the Quo one.

It’s funny how we justify paying lots of money for makeup yet will cheap out on other things! Glad we’re learning! 🙂
