Trash Stash: May 2015

Another month end, another installment of Trash Stash.  I’ll let the group picture do the talking:

Another full month of emptying!

Body stuff:

trash201505_3
Yves Rocher Désir de Nature Perfumed Shower Gel – $14 for 200ml (Yves Rocher online or stores)
Smells like lilies and honeysuckle which I really enjoy – very refreshing in the mornings. This lathers up nicely. A huge plus is that I got this for free from an online order. YR is the best for freebies. It took me about a month and a half to go through this tube.
Stash worthiness: 8/10     Repurchase: No (why pay when I can get it for free)

Body Shop Shea Beautifying Oil – $14 for 200ml (Body Shop stores or online)
I really enjoyed the silkiness of this dry oil for the body. It’s not as hydrating as one might expect from an oil but it feels nice when the weather gets a bit warmer. I have 2 other kinds of oils from this range including a chocolate one. I mentioned these in my post on oils.
Stash worthiness: 8/10     Repurchase: Yes
trash201505_8
Steam Cream – $22 for 75g (online / specialty stores)
The only reason why I bought this was because it was 50% off.  Steam Cream took the beauty world by storm a few years ago when it launched but I don’t hear much about it any more.  The idea is that the steam process makes the cream easier to absorb into the skin.  In reality, it’s just a lightweight cream that smells strongly of lavender. It’s definitely not a cream for skin that is sensitive to fragrance – I used up this tin primarily as hand cream – I can’t imagine putting it on my face.  The attraction of this product isn’t the cream inside, but rather, it’s the limited edition tin designs.  The tin design I have is called Yoshino and features cherry blossoms which is quite apropos for this time of the year when all of the cherry blossoms were in bloom!  I will likely keep this tin to hold some beads or other trinkets. I have another tin of Steam Cream in my stash in another design which was a gift.
Stash worthiness: 5/10     Repurchase: No

Hair stuff:

trash201505_6
Tresemme Tres Two Extra Hold Unscented hair spray – $8 for 311g (drugstores)
For some reason I decided to deviate from my usual regular Tresemme to the unscented, and I didn’t like it as much. As much as a hair spray is to tame flyaways or provide hold for a ‘do, the smell that it leaves in the hair does play a factor. I didn’t realize I’d miss a scent until it was gone.
Stash worthiness: 6/10     Repurchase: No for the unscented – will repurchase the regular kind

Nizoral 2% ketoconazole shampoo – $17 for 120ml (drugstores)
I reviewed this in my winter scalp rescue post. I still use this on and off even during the summer months – it really gets my scalp feeling very clean.
Stash worthiness: 10/10     Repurchase: Yes

Face stuff:

trash201505_4
The Body Shop Vitamin E Hydrating Toner – $13 for 200ml (Body Shop stores or online)
I discussed this in my winter skincare routine post, and I absolutely recommend this for all skin types. I’ve got a bunch of other toners to use up but you can bet that I’ll repurchase this for next winter!
Stash worthiness: 10/10     Repurchase: Yes

NeoStrata Hydra-Infusion 24 Hr Hydrating Serum – $38for 30ml (Shoppers Drug Mart and Rexall)
I love this so much that it was in my best of 2014 discoveries post, and it even has its own dedicated entry.
Stash worthiness: 10/10 duh     Repurchase: Yes

MAC Strobe Cream (Sized to go) – $12 for 30ml (MAC stores and online)
I’d heard so much about this product for providing a nice glow to the skin, and according to Paula’s Choice, the cream itself is packed full of antioxidants and skin benefit ingredients.  I like applying this under my foundation just at the cheek area as a highlight – but I find the perfume-y fragrance to be a little bit strong.  The travel size is very good value.  The full sized Strobe Cream is $40 for 50ml.  So the travel size per ml price is actually half price of the full size product!  If I repurchase this, I’d only buy it in the travel size.  Unfortunately travel size products do not qualify for Back-to MAC so this is just going into the recycling bin.
Stash worthiness: 7/10     Repurchase: Maybe
trash201505_5
Yves Rocher 3 Detoxifying Teas Micellar Cleansing Water – $19 for 200ml (Yves Rocher online or stores)
Don’t get too excited, this empty Bioderma bottle didn’t contain Brioderma.  Well, technically a long time ago it did, but I’ve since moved on [Bioderma is my 4th favourite micellar water that I’ve tried so far: 1) Yves Rocher 2) Caudalie 3) Reversa which I’m using right now and it’s knocked Bioderma off the 3rd spot].  I did side by side comparisons on cotton rounds between YR and Bioderma, and the YR lifted off so much more makeup / dirt compared to the Bioderma, I was hooked ever since.  I do like the convenience of the Bioderma pump bottle, so I have been reusing it again and again – it can hold 2 full bottles of the YR water.
Stash worthiness: 10/10     Repurchase: Yes but never pay full price for this! I normally pay $9 per bottle

Makeup stuff:

trash201505_7
Of the grouping of these 4 lash products – 3 of them I love, and one I detest. Let’s talk about the 3 I love quickly:
Clarins Double Fix’ Mascara topcoat ($24 for 7ml, which was opened a year ago!) and Shiseido Nourishing Mascara Base ($25 for 8m) were showcased separately during Lash Week: Mascara topcoat: Clarins vs bareMinerals and Mascara Base: Shiseido vs Dr. Mascara Fixer.  Both are fantastic and I have already repurchased the Clarins. Stash worthiness: 10/10  Repurchase: Yes for Clarins, No for Shiseido since Etude House is so good and cheaper

L’Oreal Bare Naturale mascara (discontinued)
My all time HG mascara that I’ve stockpiled. One down, another 5 more to go. I reckon by 2017 I will have used up all of my stash.
Stash worthiness: 10/10     Repurchase: 😦

The one I loathe:
NYX Faux Lashes mascara – $7 (Rexall / online)
This mascara was awful. I don’t even remember where I got it from but I hope I didn’t pay much for it. The wand has silicone bristles that are so spiky, they poke my eyes (and I’m normally fine with silicone bristles). The fibres in the mascara would flake and get into my eyes causing additional irritation. Then on top of that, this smudges under my eyes like crazy. The effect looks ok on the lashes but I was constantly blinking and rubbing my eyes – I couldn’t stand to wear this for more than a few days. What a waste!
Stash worthiness: 2/10     Repurchase: No

Bunch o’ samples:

trash201505_9
• The mascara samples were all part of my mini mascara, mini reviews post from Lash Week
Biotherm Biocils eye makeup remover is amazing – I bought a full sized bottle ($31 for 125ml) based on how much I loved the gwp samples
• the Rodial Glamoxy Snake Serum is a bunch of crock, did nothing

You made it! I present to you this virtual gold star ⭐
Have you tried any of these products?

  1. YR often has pretty but functionally annoying packaging! There’s a face wash they have (had?) that my husband uses, but it came in the most awkward bottle. We now transfer it into a pump bottle, and it is so much easier to use, plus much less wastage since you can control the amount you want much better.

I’ve been wanting to try that MAC Strobe Cream – glad to hear you liked it! Congrats on finishing up so much stuff. 😀

    1. Strobe Cream is nicer than I thought it would be – it has an iridescent type of sheen but no shimmer or glitter. I’ve even worn it all over my face as my moisturizer and it works well. Buy the travel size to try out first. That little tube lasted me a long time!
YR in general is just awkward – the names and descriptions are totally lost in translation – they need to hire a proper French to English translator, lol! But their products are generally very good quality so they get a pass for that and the packaging.

      1. Cool, it’s definitely a bit higher up on my list now. Thanks!

YR is quite hit/miss for me. Some products I adore, and others are like, “wtf is this?” They definitely need an English translator! I never really thought of it but you’re so right.

  2. I don’t think I’ve tried any of these products. Lovin the title Trash Stash still! Seeing the 😦 in the repurchase area of your fave mascara was quite sad. My HG mascara (sexy curves) got discontinued as well. Btw your last post never showed up on my feed. I had to clickety click there all by myself! Thank goodness I found it.

    1. WordPress is so weird sometimes! This morning it kept showing a BLANK page on my feed – I kept refreshing and then just finally logged back in.
Yes, discontinued HG items are the saddest. Mascaras are the worst since they have such short life span so you HAVE to throw it out. SADNESS! 😦

    1. Yves Rocher also sells 2 other kinds of micellar waters (hydrating and purifying) and I’ve tried them all – this 3 Detoxifying Teas one is the best one! Make sure you wait for a sale! 🙂

    1. Me too! I think partly it’s like a peek into other people’s cabinets! Plus, these are things they’ve fully used up so the opinions are more valid than first impressions, I think. 😋

  3. Strobe Cream was my face primer when I started to use makeup more often. Now that I think about it, I’m not sure it did much for my face, although it was much clearer back then. I don’t know how many times I’ve seen that Body Shop toner in posts, but it’s a clear sign that I ought to try it out. Biotherm was THE brand for me years ago! I hate that you have to order their products online now. When my friend used to work at the cosmetics dept at Macy’s, she’d hook me up with tons of their samples.

  4. Nice you finished quite a couple of products this month 🙂
I love the body shop oils: they settle so quickly without leaving a residue. I must really pick up another one, mine is almost finished as well. What is your favorite scent?

  5. I really want to try that Bioderma stuff! ( I know yours was filled with some thing else) How well do you like it? Is four a pretty good ranking? 🙂

  6. This was a great post! I love the fact you featured some different products that you don’t really hear about very often 🙂 totally agree about the steam cream – ended up giving mine away because I couldn’t deal with it on my face!
