Maybelline Concealer Comparison

I like the brand Maybelline mainly for one product: their concealers.  I don’t like their mascaras – they smudge terribly on me.  Not really a fan of their lipsticks – their packaging bother me (why would there be a neon outer casing that doesn’t match the bullet shade?)   Their eye shadows are just average (although their matte single pans are good, but I fear they’re being phased out).  However, Maybelline concealers are phenomenal!  There has not been a Maybelline concealer that I’ve tried that was complete rubbish.  For me, the Instant Age Rewind (IAR) concealers are one the best under eye concealers on the market, regardless of price point.

Since I have quite a few Maybelline concealers in my stash currently, I thought I’d do a quick comparison and review of them:

Eraser Dark Circles Treatment Concealer in Medium 130
Eraser Dark Circles Treatment Concealer in Neutralizer 150
Instant Age Rewind Double Face Perfector in Light medium 720
Fit Me Concealer in Sand 20
Face Studio Master Conceal in Light / medium 30
Dream Lumi Touch Highlighting Concealer in Buff 340

These concealers are all very affordable, retailing for less than $15 and easily accessible at most drugstores.  I use all of these concealers mainly under my eye area.  I prefer stick or cream concealers for blemishes or redness.

I’ve swatched each of the concealers on my arm, over lines of black waterproof liquid liner (Kiss Me Heroine Make Smooth Liquid Eyeliner) to show how much coverage each one provides:

As you can see, the Double Face Perfector Conceal has the best coverage.  The current Instant Age Rewind Eraser Dark Circles Treatment Concealer is also quite good.  It is actually the third incarnation of the IAR concealer range.  It all started with the original Instant Age Rewind Under Eye Concealer (not shown) which was in a squeeze tube:

I had this once upon a time and it was decent, it was my least favourite of the three iterations of the Age Rewind concealers because the coverage wasn’t the best, and it didn’t last all day on me.  I do like the squeeze tube packaging the best out of all three versions though.  The Face Studio Master Conceal reminds me of this in coverage and consistency.

The second version of the IAR concealer was called Instant Age Rewind Double Face Perfector, which was my absolute favourite.  The Conceal end was perfection: opaque and blendable but did not look cakey or accentuate fine lines.  The Highlight end worked well in conjunction with the concealer.  My main gripe was how little product was in the tube (2.7ml of each) – I would have much preferred if they just sold the Conceal end alone.  I’ve used up countless tubes of this and this tube is my last one – I’m undecided if I would go in search of a replacement from old stock (sealed packages).  I see these selling online still – there seems to be a lot of stock of the dark shade so if you’re NC45 skin tone, it would be a great option for you!  Although, this was discontinued in 2011 so the remaining stock is getting a bit old / stale.

The current version of the IAR concealer, the Instant Age Rewind Eraser Dark Circles Treatment Concealer is also great – it has very good coverage, doesn’t cake, and makes the under eye area look smooth.  It has slightly less coverage than the Double Face Perfector but the bottle contains more than twice the amount of product (6ml).  My challenge was finding a suitable shade match – I’m in between the Light and Medium.  I find the best solution for me is to mix Medium with the Neutralizer (very similar to Light shade but with more coverage).  The packaging of the Eraser is not my favourite – the sponge does seem unsanitary, although Maybelline states that it has been treated with antibacterial properties.  I don’t use the sponge to apply the concealer directly to my face and I haven’t had issues.

Dream Lumi Touch Highlighting Concealer was a surprise hit – I didn’t expect much from this highlighting pen, but it has decent coverage on its own and provides a lifted, smooth appearance to my under eye area.  I actually like this better than more expensive highlighting pens such as Clarins Instant Light Brush-On Perfector or Estee Lauder Ideal Light Brush-On Illuminator. I can even get away with using this alone as my concealer for casual days.

Face Studio Master Conceal and Fit Me are both just ok for me. They have lighter coverage and neither seem to stay put on my face.  I usually mix them with high coverage concealers that are too drying (ie Mary Kay concealer or Physicians Formula Conceal Rx) on their own.  I won’t repurchase these 2.  It kind of concerns me that many people compare Nars Radiant Creamy Concealer to Maybelline Fit Me, since I don’t love Fit Me, but I’m really curious about the Nars since people rave about it!

The 3 remaining concealers from Maybelline’s current line up that I haven’t tried are the Instant Age Rewind Eraser Dark Spot Concealer TreatmentSuperStay 24HR Concealer and the Cover Stick Corrector Concealer.  Out of the 3, I’m most interested in trying the Eraser Dark Spot Concealer Treatment one – does anyone know if this is suitable for the under eye area?

I know there are quite a few fans of Maybelline concealers out there – which is your favourite?

  1. I have always loved using my Fit Me concealer and have been going back to it ever si ce I ran months ago and have a back up too. I’ve always wanted to try the Master concealer but can never find it in my local stores. That Dream Lumi one seems cool by the way you described it. I now want to try that one out too 🙂 Great review on these Maybelline concealers

    1. I know a lot of people like Fit Me and I can understand why – it’s very easy to blend and creamy, but for my needs, it’s too lightweight coverage and it seems to disappear by mid-day on me. Yes, I highly recommend Dream Lumi – it’s great!

  2. I just stick with MAC Studio Finish, since I just cover blemishes. My undereye area isn’t really a problem area for me (yet?), so I haven’t needed liquid concealers.

I haven’t tried a drugstore concealer in ages (prob because the last one I tried like 15 yrs ago, a CG stick, was awful), though if there was one comparable to the MAC, I’d be on it! Maybe I should check out the Maybelline stick. It looks suspiciously like the CG I hated, though. 😀

    Cool roundup!

    1. Actually if you’re looking for a drugstore stick concealer, the best one I’ve found is Revlon Photoready, it’s really creamy, gives a natural finish, and stays on well:

Once upon a time I tried using MAC Studio Finish as my under eye concealer! It was so cakey but now I know the errors of my ways! I’m more concerned with under eye concealing than blemishes, but I do like the Revlon one for around my nose to tone down the redness.

      1. Yeah the MAC would be super cakey for the undereye! Oops 😀

Thanks for the Revlon rec. I can usually find a foundation color to suit me there, so I’ll definitely check out that concealer.

  3. Great post! I love seeing all of these comparisons. My favorite has been the Master Conceal so far. It’s been my most favorite out of all the concealers I’ve tried. 🙂 xo

  4. I really like the Instant Age Rewind concealer.I usually just dab a little under my eye then pat it to blend in lightly.
I didn’t realise that so many of the Maybelline concealers were so great.

  5. Great post! I don’t rarely use concealer. I don’t have under eye circles (though I have many other skin probs lol) but I am interested in the Dream Lumi. It looks like it would be really nice as a subtle highlight.

    1. I just recently tried my first Maybelline mascara after years of avoiding them – the Lash Sensation one – and you know what? I love it! I was shocked… and it goes to show, you gotta give things a second chance! 🙂 What’s your favourite Maybelline mascara?
