Facial mists

Continuing with this week’s topic of “radiant skin”, today we’ll be talking about water.  To achieve radiant skin, It’s essential to keep the skin hydrated inside and out – and the easiest way of course, is water.

Yes, another zoolander reference. 😛

Yes, drinking water is good for starters – but beyond drinking 8 glasses of water blah blah blah, water in the form of facial mists can be used on your skin before, during and after applying skincare and makeup:
• Before: I spray a hydrating mist on my skin just before I apply my hyaluronic acid serum so that the hyaluronic acid has moisture to bind to.
• During: I will sometimes spray water onto my foundation brush to make my foundation more dewy.  If using a Beauty Blender type sponge, I use water to soak the sponge to make the application flawless.
• After: I spray a setting spray to reduce the powdery appearance of finishing powder, and also sometimes during the day I will mist my face with a spray to refresh my makeup

Here are 3 sprays I routinely use to help keep my skin hydrated and supple looking:

Sukin Hydrating Mist Toner – $9 for 125ml (Rexall, health food shops)
One of my favourite misting toners.  It contains chamomile and rosewater which soothes the skin and preps it for the application of a hydrating serum. I’ve only started doing this extra pre-serum step about a year ago and have definitely noticed that my serums work better with it; since all of my serums contain hyaluronic acid, which requires moisture to bind to in order to maximize its effectiveness.  My skin looks more plump and stays hydrated throughout the day.

Creations Garden pH Water Spray – $10 for 177ml (Rexall)
I like using this to spray onto my foundation / buffer brushes if I’m applying a heavier foundation that I want to sheer out.  It can also provide a hydrating mist on top of powder foundation to leave the skin dewy rather than flat / powdery.  You can substitute any of the Avene / Vichy / Evian canned water for this – they’re a similar concept.

Rodial Dragon’s Blood Hyaluronic Tonic – $42 for 100ml (Murale, select Shoppers Drug Mart Beauty Boutique, online)
Ouch, the price of this is outrageous. I do not recommend this simply for that fact alone. Sure, it’s a nice facial mist but none of the ingredients (rosewater, glycerin, niacinamide, hyaluronic acid) in this justifies the price tag. To add insult to injury, the spray nozzle on the original bottle is complete rubbish (also, the bottle is a heavy glass), so I had to decant it into a better spray bottle. Regardless, the concept of this spray is that it can be used as a mist to refresh makeup, or to take away a powdery look from foundation. It does the job just fine, and it smells quite nice (citrus) and feels refreshing.  After I’m finished with this one, I’ll likely buy the Body Shop Vitamin E Face Mist ($18 for 100ml) or Clinique Moisture Surge Face Spray Thirsty Skin Relief ($27 for 125ml).

Do you use facial mists?

    1. I was surprised to find them at Rexall too, but I think they’re making a real effort to stock more natural beauty products. I haven’t heard of the Lush one, will have to investigate (but yeah probably overpriced!)

  1. Last week I was at Sephora and the girl applied on me the Caudalie Grape Water to counter part the powdery effect I had on my skin and let me tell you that this mist BLEW me away !!! This is my next purchase, it made a real difference 🙂

  2. I don’t use facial mists regularly except the Etude House AC Clinic Hinoki Mist if my skin is breaking out. The Sukin mist looks right up my street though, I like that it hasn’t got any nasties in it 🙂

  3. I use MAC fix plus to get rid of all the powder. I use Avene when I have serious skin irratation like a burn from a product and need my skin to cool down. Now, Caudalie has a grape water but they say you can tone, I dont know how true that it is.

  4. First of all, I can’t not comment on the name – Dragon Blood! Sounds really bad ass haha. It’s a shame it’s so pricey! At the moment I just use toner water from lush, prior make up and sometimes to freshen up doing day. My favourite ones consist of Tea Tree Water, Grapefruit Water and Juniperberry Water; and Lavender Water with Rose Water 🙂

    1. I did not know that Lush made toner waters! I shall have to check them out! The Grapefruit and Juniperberry ones sound amazing! Thanks for letting me know about them. 🙂

  5. Woah! Dragon Blood! The name enough got me, but the Hyaluronic Tonic just blew me away. It’s a shame that it didn’t justify the claims (if there’s any..)
Being a fan of Korean skin, I really would love to include this in my skin regime but I don’t know why it’s taking me ages to find a good one. It came to me that we’re not an avid fan of facial mist considering the hot weather. Thus there are not a lot of these in the market. Only Evian’s.

    1. I am sure there would be some available from Asian brands. The brand Etude House was mentioned in one of the comments – do you have access to that brand? Body Shop also makes a good one. I hope you find one, especially for your tropical climate, it would be a welcome relief on the 40 C days!!!

  6. I really enjoy facial mists! I have a really nice Mineral Mist by Elf that I have been using lately. I also got to try the Avene one which was really nice too! 🙂 xo

  7. I received a small bottle of Avene with one of my past ipsy bags and haven’t laid a finger on it. I’m still trying to see if micellar water is even an essential to my routine. Getting there, I suppose. Maybe I’ll move on to facial mists eventually. Baby steps!

    1. I used to think it was so many steps but now that I’ve incorporated them, it’s 2nd nature. I use the micellar water as my 2nd cleansing step – first is cleansing oil, then the micellar water. The toning mist I like using in the mornings before I put on my serum. Try using the Avene in the mornings, it really preps the skin.

  8. The Avene spray is always with me when I know I’m going to be outdoors in the summer… a travelling staple! Have you tried the MIYU brand? Both scents are lovely.

Looking forward to trying the SUKIN you mentioned 🙂

  9. I heard Burt’s Bees is coming up with a new facial water (Korean essence) and I’m intrigued to try it out the moment it’s out in the store. I really need to get some facial water and I’m interested also on the Creation Garden you mentioned. Great post xo

    1. It seems like Burt’s Bees is revamping their skincare line and taking some cues from Asian skincare – how exciting! I never cared much for their skincare before – too greasy and heavy – but if they’re going to shift toward Asian inspired skincare, I’m on board! Thanks for letting me know. 🙂

  10. Fascinating! I didn’t know the whole acid water connection. I’m actually taking the Clinique one on my trip as Caroline Hirons recommended it for long flights.

  11. I’ve heard the Smashbox Primer Water is the best thing since sliced bread! Also, the Urban Decay Chill Makeup Setting spray! Both of those are super popular!
I’m sad that the Rodial Spray didn’t work for you! 😦 It’s really pretty packaging! (Which I know is not a good enough reason to buy a product! lol)

  12. I don’t use any mist. Not for skin care and not for makeup. It is interesting that you’ve noticed a difference of your skin condition since adding the step to your routine. I am too lazy for that 😛
