Trash Stash: June 2015

The end of June marks the official mid-point of the year! I’ve always wondered why it’s “Christmas in July” when it really makes more sense to be in June! 💡

It was especially satisfying to finish some of these products this month because many of them I’d been using for a long time.

Vichy NutriExtra Fluid Replenishing Nourishing Body Care – $25 for 400ml (drugstores)
I have no clue where this came from; it just appeared in my cabinet one day. I must have received it in a set or a gwp or something. It’s a lightweight cream-gel texture body lotion with a light refreshing grapefruit scent.  No greasy feel and my body is hydrated all day. I really liked this, but I don’t think I’d shell out the moolah for this.

Uniq One All In One Hair Treatment – $18 USD for 150ml (beauty supply stores, salons)
This is a deluxe sample size that I’ve been struggling to use up. My friend received this in a loot bag and passed this to me since it’s not suitable for her hair type.  I was excited to try this since it has TEN hair benefits! But all I noticed was that it was super silicone-y, and smells very strongly of men’s aftershave (the 4th ingredient out of the 25 listed is perfume!).  It did leave my hair feel soft and detangled, but I didn’t notice any other benefits.  It didn’t weigh my hair down which was a plus.

Reviva Labs Lindenflower Facial Spray – $6.30 for 236ml (iherb.com)
I wanted to love this since it was recommended so often online as a good hydrating mist to apply before skincare. The ingredients are top notch: glycerin, hyaluronic acid, aloe etc, and felt hydrating on the skin.  But I just couldn’t handle the overly fragrant floral scent of this product.  The spray nozzle on the bottle was awful – it splattered all over the place – I had to pour this into an empty Sukin spray bottle instead.  I’m not mad, just disappointed.

Lise Watier MAGNIFIX Make-Up Fixative with White Tea – $22 for 150ml (Shoppers Drug Mart, online)
This is the only makeup fixing spray that I’ve repurchased. It helps to remove any powdery look to my foundation and keep it looking radiant. I’ve tried the Urban Decay All Nighter spray and I didn’t find it helped my makeup last longer.  This has a subtle tea scent- for some reason, I love tea smells in skincare.  Sorry I couldn’t capture the fine print on this bottle as it was metallic, but it notes that this contains White Tea and Chitosan marine extracts.  The spray nozzle on this is pretty sucky too, so I pour this into another empty spray bottle.  I’m so picky about spray bottles! 😛

Clarins Lotus Face Treatment Oil – $53 for 30ml (department stores, drugstores)
It was with a real sense of accomplishment that I poured the last drop of this oil onto my palms and patted it on my skin. I love this stuff! This bottle lasted me more than 2 years. Clarins offers 3 types of facial oils (Santal, Blue Orchid, and Lotus) and I mainly chose this because I like the scent best. The Lotus one is meant more for oily / combo skin types so I typically use this during warmer months – otherwise it’s not hydrating enough.  This oil really does help to clarify my skin if it’s acting up from allergies – some nights this is all I put on my face before bed instead of my usual serum + moisturizer routine.  I have another bottle ready to go.

Missha konjac sponge – $5 (online)
I didn’t like the texture of this konjac sponge as much as my regular Face Shop one – it wasn’t as spongy or as exfoliating compared to that.

Shiseido Bio-Performance Super Corrective Serum – $98 for 30ml (department stores, drugstores)
This tube has been going strong for more than a year.  It’s really meant for an all over face serum but I only use this under my eyes – a tiny bit, the size of a grain of rice, is all that is needed for each eye.  It provides a smoothing effect but I’m not sure if it’s temporary due to the silicone content.  This was a contending for PUFU, except that the product itself isn’t visible through the vacuum pump bottle so I can’t take photos to show my progress.  Damn cosmetics companies putting their products in proper packaging!  I started my back-up bottle of this already.  I’m undecided if I would repurchase because it’s quite overpriced for what it is.
Stash worthiness: 7/10     Repurchase: Maybe

Shiseido Benefiance Instant Treatment Eye Masks – $30 for 12 pairs (reg $72) (Winners)
This stuff is fantastic but I would never pay full price for it.  I did a full review of this and my conclusion is that after I finish the boxes (1 more to go) I’ll get a retinol eye cream, probably from Avene.

Have you tried any of these products? What have you used up lately?

      1. I’ve never actually smelled a real lotus/waterlily, but I’ve loved a lot of the perfumes I’ve smelled with lotus as a major note. It’s kind of a watery and soft floral. L’Occitane made a beautiful one in the 90s, but they d/c it 😦 I’ll check out the Clarins, anyway!

      1. AHAHAHAHAHAHAAH!!!!! You’re too funny!! It’s not bad, promise. But if you have allergies or contact lenses, I cannot recommend. The fibres are quite “tiny” so they can work their way into your eyeball good. Lol!

          1. Omg – you are too funny. Now you’re giving me the heebee jeebies!!! I remember seeing this super fuzzy, super black spider and now it’s all I think about when I look at the fibres. THANKS. LOL!!! xo

  1. The Clarins oil sounds very nice, I just find the scents a bit off putting. I sniffed them in store once but didn’t really like any of them…how is the lotus one?

    1. The Lotus oil is my favourite and the least strong in the scent! I find the other 2 very musky and overbearing. It’s personal preferences of course, my friend prefers the smell of the Blue Orchid but I find it too musky. If you get a chance, go to the Clarins counter to smell them!

  2. I have to agree with Anne. That Clarins oil looks amazing! I’m always kinda scared to try facial oils. I don’t know why, it just seems so weird to me to put oil on my face, you know? What are the benefits of having a facial oil in your skin care routine? Teach me your ways!

    1. I felt weird initially too – I started out using the Burt’s Bees rosehip oil serum and was scared it’d break me out, but it didn’t! Some nights I’ll use just the oil and no moisturizer, especially when my skin is irritated (allergies, hormonal). I find that oils calms my skin and plumps it up more than using serum / moisturizers. Currently I alternate between the Clarins oil and just plain old argan oil from the health food store. I also like mixing my Paula’s Choice vitamin C serum into my oil for a treatment – it makes my skin look glowy. I would recommend trying out the mini vial of the Josie Maran argan oil if you’re curious! That was one of the first ones I’d tried too:

  3. I’m really interested in the Clarins Lotus Facial Oil – ever since I picked up their Tonic Body Oil, I’ve want to try more! Lol. Great job on the empties – so satisfying, isn’t it? I think people thinks that makes us weird – that we like finishing things. 🙂

    1. It is very satisfying indeed! I paid good money for those items and I enjoy using them, so why not FINISH them? (it’s been very helpful for me to focus ever since I went on my No-Buy since I have no need distractions to tempt me!) 😉

    1. It’s pretty fragranced, but it’s natural. It smells like a spa / holistic place… that’s the best I could describe it as. If you get a chance, go to the counter to smell it. They have 3 scents and the Lotus is my favourite one – I find the others a bit musky whereas this one is fresh.

  4. I love your empty products posts because you always have really different products 🙂 I can totally relate to finding products and not knowing where they came from – happens far too often!
