Blogs that went dormant

I was feeling nostalgic and thinking about a bunch of blogs that I used to read nearly every day, that have gone completely dormant without any official goodbyes or closure.  You probably know about some of these, but I thought I’d share them anyway.

Karla Sugar
Probably better known as the arm that launched a thousand lemmings (I didn’t make up that term, I read it on MakeupAlley), she was well-known for her swatches of entire collections, making her blog a one-stop shop. I really liked that she would swatch colours side by side so it was easy to make comparisons when trying to choose between shades.  Her posting frequency started to decline and then she abruptly stopped updating her blog in May of 2013.

She was a very prolific blogger with a passion for blushes and taupe eye shadows – right up my alley!  I loved her photography and I always felt her colours were one of the most true-to-life out of all the blogs I frequented. Her last entry stated that she lost all of her pictures and that she would have to retake the photos to post new entries, but she never did – that was in 2012.

Lotus Palace
She was the source for information on Asian cosmetics at a time when there were not many English language articles or even access to the products themselves.  She made Asian cosmetics accessible to the outside world which made her one of my go-to sites when I first started to look into BB creams and Asian skincare.  Her last few entries talked about starting school and then she did a blog sale, and that was it.

Lacquerized
She had the most beautiful photography and highly informative posts. Her guide to 25 different nail polish finishes is one of my favourite,  and she made me appreciate holographic nail polishes.  In one of her last posts, she wrote an entry about the annoyance of finding her photos being used without her permission, then she stopped updating July of 2011 without any other reason.

She was the authority on nail care – I learned so much about the chemistry and ingredients in nail treatment products.  I also learned how to make faux Zoya Remove+ (acetone and glycerin) which I still make to this day!  She wrote about finding a job in one of her last entries and then trailed off in 2014.

Honourable mention:

Pink Sith
Her blog has changed its focus from strictly beauty to more of social commentary, and she only posts once a month now.  My favourite series she ever did was “Taupes You Can’t Have“.  Also check out “Blushes You Can’t Have“, the follow up torture series. Her writing had me in stitches!

I understand that people lose interest in blogging, or life gets busy, or there are major changes in one’s life… but not even an entry to say an official goodbye?  Or if they don’t want something that definitive, maybe a post to say that they’re doing fine, they just decided to not update for now.  I don’t know, I just find it odd.  I’m totally small-time compared to these blogs, but I promise if I ever take a break or stop blogging, I’ll make an official entry, ok? 😛

I suppose one thing I am grateful for is that all the old entries of these blogs are still up and the contents have not been removed – yet.  For now, I can keep rereading old entries and enjoy them.  I’m just waiting for the day when Temptalia decides to call it quits, then we know an era has ended!

Any blogs you used to read that no longer update?

  1. Ah yes I remember seeing that delicate hummingbird had lost all her photos 😦

    Pink Sith was so funny!

I don’t think I ever went to Karla Sugar’s site, but her photos showed up on Google all of the time 😀 so that’s how I’d see her pics.

Nice idea for a post! So nostalgic.

    1. Yeah I bet Karla Sugar’s site gets a lot of hits daily still, but too bad she doesn’t update anymore. Or at least post an entry to say that she’s doing fine but lost interest swatching and blogging. People always expect the worst – like, I remember a Youtuber who dropped off without any explanation and people started rumours that she had died (which was not true).
Not at ALL at the same level but YOU kind of stopped posting on MUA and I was like, hey, where’s that chick with all the nail swatches? 😛

  2. This is interesting. I guess I’ve never paid much attention to blogs that disappear but I totally agree with you how odd it is to not at least say goodbye or leave an update… I guess because blogging is such a part of my life that I can’t imagine just waking up one day and not caring about my blog or the friends I’ve made through it.

    1. Exactly, it’s like disconnecting from your friends and leaving town and not saying bye… people will naturally expect the worst (did she get sick?) I just want that to know you’re all right! 🙂

    1. I just wish they’d provide some closure… ah well, I guess in their view, they don’t owe us anything. We’ve been getting their content for free all this time.

  3. It’s very sad when blogs you love reading just stop. A friend of mine here on WordPress, I loved her blog so much and it was so successful and then she just stopped blogging. :/

  4. I don’t think it’s odd or rude to drift off. They probably didn’t want to say something while unsure whether to quit or not, and by the time they got around to thinking about it, it was too late or quite obvious. I read most of these at some point or another. They really were groundbreaking beauty blog pioneers!

  5. This was such an interesting post. I don’t think I ever followed any of these blogs but I do recall coming across Karla Sugar’s photos. I think these days alot of blogs go dormant but its always more shocking when some of the big ones that have been around for ages do so. 🙂

    1. Someone said it in another comment but a lot of these blogs were pioneers of the beauty blogging world. And now they’re gone… Ah well. I guess the only constant is change! 😊

  6. I love karlasugar. I hope she’s well. Her blos is very helpful. Like you, I hope she would at least let us know that she’s been fine…and that her interests have changed. *fingers crossed*

    1. I know, I do wish her all the best and that she’s just living life and don’t have passion for makeup any more. It’s just unusual – I mean, she used to visit makeup counters ALL THE TIME and swatch their entire line, and then one day – just stopped?

  7. Karla Sugar’s posts were fabulous and, like you say, it’s very strange that they stopped abruptly. Her website is still up and running so does that mean she is still around and keeping it live? Come back, Karla, we miss you!

    1. I’m so glad Karla Sugar’s site is still up! I keep thinking one day it will be gone. A lot of her photos still pop up in google searches and on Pinterest too. It is so strange she just stopped one day – imagine if that happened with Temptalia? 😵
