Back to MAC pick and some other stuff

A couple of weeks ago I asked for recommendations on which MAC lipstick to trade in for, and a number of you chimed in on your recommendations.

Back to MAC
Hint: It’s a Cremesheen!

The big reveal!

To refresh, these were the 6 on my wish list:
Back to MAC
Based on the comments, the top 3 were: Brave, Plumful and Party Line.

I picked… Party Line! 😀
MAC Party Line lipstick
It really took me by surprise, how much I liked this colour on me!  It looks dark in the tube but it registers as a wearable muted reddish berry shade on me. And the Cremesheen formula is divine!  Brave was very nice on as well, but it is such a familiar shade – and since I’d just recently got the Charlotte Tilbury lipstick in Bitch Perfect, just how many MLBB shades do I need?  Plumful was a bit of a let down because it pulled sort of fuchsia on me, and with the Lustre formula, I could see it may have a tendency to bleed.  I did also really like See Sheer on me – it’s still on my wish list. 🙂  I’ll do a review post with swatches once I get a chance to wear it.  Thanks again for all your suggestions!

But of course, I didn’t leave the MAC store with just my “free” lipstick, oh no. I had mentally prepared myself for if I was really tempted to SHOP once I was in the store, so I wrote down some non-makeup items I may want to get while I was there.  And so, I picked up:
MAC Pro Palettes
• Pro Palettes (eye shadow x2 and large single) & insert (man, MAC dropped the prices of these down to $10 and $3 each? I know I paid at least $20 for the empty pan and $10 for the insert before! I’m planning on depotting more of my eye shadows so I need something to house them)
MAC Pro Performance Sponge
Pro Performance Sponge (I’ve been testing a whole bunch of Beauty Blender type of makeup sponges so I wanted to include MAC’s in the mix)
MAC foundation samples
I also requested 3 foundation samples to test out – I’ve not had great success with MAC foundations in the past (the only MAC foundation I own is Face & Body) and these are all new to me:
BB Cream in Medium (I hope this doesn’t break me out like the compact did!)
Matchmaster in 1.5
Mineral Moisture in NC20
(see what I mean about MAC colour numbering being all over the place?)

While the SA was prepping my foundation samples, I milled around the Pro Longwear eye shadow display.  The SA mentioned to me that the Pro Longwear range is being discontinued. SAY WHAT? Then, she said that they’re also discontinuing some blushes too. WHAT again? 😮

So to explain: Pro Longwear eye shadows were initially launched in 2011 with the Styledriven collection, and then new colours added in 2012 with Office Hours collection.  The formula is hit and miss (some lacked pigmentation) – but I did find them to be very long wearing (check out the wear test Temptalia did).  The other great thing about these eye shadows is how much product you get – for a few dollars more ($17 vs $12), the pan is more than double the size of a regular pan (3.4g for Pro Longwear vs 1.5g for regular).  I of course, had already owned the neutral shades so I was set – but how sad this formula is being discontinued.  The Pro Longwear also brought about one of the most spectacular eye shadow shades MAC ever released, the infamous “Uninterrupted” – a shade often described as baby diarrhea:

MAC Uninterrupted Pro Longwear eye shadow
From my stash

MAC’s official colour description is “dark camel”.  This shade sparked so  many tutorials a few years back – check out this beautiful look that Sam of Pixiwoo created featuring this eye shadow – I’ve tried a toned down version of this look before and it’s gorgeous!

The shade is unique and universally flattering – people even use it to contour their cheeks. I’ve seen this eye shadow being sold on eBay for $50 (“HTH! rare!!!”) and I bet now that it’s being discontinued, it’s going to be even more sought after.

AND, to add more madness to what the SA was saying to me, she informs me that Cubic, Buff and Tenderling blushes were being discontinued as well!  Um, Cubic was my 2nd ever MAC blush, that is NUTS!  All of these colours are really popular – I know lots of fair-skinned ladies will be bummed that Tenderling is going.  I do own all 3 of those shades – I really like them all with Buff being my favourite.  But why I’m telling you all this is because I did grab a few of the items being discontinued, not for ME, but for a future GIVEAWAY! Don’t get too excited yet. I won’t be doing the giveaway until I’m done my No-Buy – hey, if I can wait, you can wait too. 😛  (Of course you have to be following me to find out when the giveaway will be!)

(I’m not revealing what I got for the giveaway yet!)

So $100+ later… I got my “free” Back to MAC lipstick! 😉

    1. I know right? They discontinued one of the nicest neutrals in the line. I asked the SA what was comparable to the blushes they’re discontinuing and she was at loss. She said likely MAC will be replacing them with similar shades in the future. Boooo.
I’m really glad I didn’t succumb to the lure of another MLBB shade – I listened to you guys! 🙂

  1. Oh that lipstick color looks gorgeous, perfect for fall.
I see you fell for the age-old mac store issue: once you’re there you suddenly need all kinds of things 🙂

    1. Yes, it’s a perfect Fall shade for sure! I’ve always been hesitant about bolder lip colours so this is a good way to edge myself in.
I know… I fall for it every time. Also, the “I can’t buy just ONE item” problem.

You should get the colour Groundwork – it’s my most used Paint Pot, just the best taupe shade.
Haha “a few lipsticks” – like you don’t have enough already! You can open a MAC store!
Yes you should get some Mineral blushes – they’re really pretty, I want Dainty too. I have Love Thing and it is PIGMENTED – a very nice fall shade.

  3. So much good stuff in this post! First of all…OMG I need Party Line! Looks Ah-mah-zing. Secondly, Cubic, Buff and Tenderling blushes are being discontinued!!! What?! Crazy. I love Cubic & Buff, and Tenderling was on my wish-list. Also, I watched the same Pixiwoo video and bought Uninterrupted 🙂 It really is a neat colour.

  4. Once I read “discontinue” – my only question was – how many will you buy then? haha. I’m shocked and proud you only bought a couple for a giveaway! Very admirable! 😛
I’m very interested to find out how you get on with a sponge, though (wink wink) 😀
Also, hey $100 later or not – free stuff still feels good! 😉
