Blogger Recognition Award and 250 Days of No-Buy

Today marks my 250 Days of No-Buy! 😀

Fun fact: As a Mandarin slang term, the number “250” (二百五 èrbǎiwǔ) is an insult meaning “stupid person” or “simpleton”. 😕

I was nominated sextuply (yes that’s the word) recently for the Blogger Recognition Award – first by Katie of Plus+Beauty, secondly by Chris of fivezero, thirdly by Janella of Skin Diary, fourthly by Joy of StyledWithJoy, fifthly by Chic and Polished, and finally by Polished and Inspired! 😀

Blogger Recognition Award Rules

  1. Write a post explaining why you started blogging along with a few tips.
  2. Nominate some of your fellow bloggers.
  3. Comment on their blogs to let them know you’ve nominated them.

Why I started a blog:

It should be pretty self evident by now – I started this blog to distract myself from the challenge of my yearlong No-Buy! 😛
someecards
My SO and friends also encouraged me to start a blog since I seem to enjoy sharing information about skincare and makeup. I also wanted to flex my writing muscles as well as have an outlet for creative pursuits like photography and digital illustrations.

Tips: Ask yourself, do you enjoy receiving likes on your blog entry? Do you get a tinge of excitement when a new comment is posted?  Of course you do.  Well, so does everyone else.  It’s nice to give and to receive – don’t be selfish with blog participation.  Don’t just reply to your own blog comments, go and actually read other people’s blogs and participate there.

And don’t compare yourself! It’s difficult to avoid this, but blogging is not a numbers game.  I really enjoy the qualitative things about blogging – the kinds of people I get to interact with, the information I learn, the beautiful photos shown – these to me, are most important.

A few more practical tips:

  • Jot down any blog ideas that pops up as soon as you think of them onto your phone or in a notebook, sometimes those fleeting ideas are the best ones
  • Keep a few “back pocket” type posts in your draft folder for when inspiration just doesn’t come – they can tide you over until the blockage clears
  • Create monthly recurring posts like Empties or Favourites – this will automatically fill in content for your blog

  1. Congrats on 250 days of no buy!! You’re ALMOST there!! I loved your tip about reading and commenting on other people’s blogs, I try to do it as often as possible but whenever I’m reading in a rush and I don’t have time, I always feel really bad! But I feel like commenting on everyone’s stuff shows I’m reading it and paying attention and that I care and it promotes the feeling of community we’ve got going on here, which I love. 🙂

    1. I know, I’m SO close! I just have one more milestone badge (300 days) and then it’ll be the end of the year aka last day of No-Buy for me! BUT, I also don’t want to go nuts on Jan 1st and buy everything in sight. I will need a plan of action lol. Oh I totally understand it’s tough to constantly comment on everyone’s post. I try to carve out a bit of time in the morning and in the evenings. The WP community is amazing! ❤

  2. Congratulations on your 250 days! I hope all is well with you. I miss you and everyone! I can’t wait to be back again finally! I haven’t really been able to get onto WordPress very much lately. Those are some great tips you gave. 🙂 Keep up the great work!! 🙂 xo

  3. Well done on 250 days! Thank you for the nomination too! I’ve been finding it so hard recently having time to come on and read other people’s blogs/comment – makes me mad because I love our community! I do find that I must have people who like the post without reading it (as likes -> views don’t always add up), which I never do personally, I use like as ‘I like what you’ve said, but don’t have time to comment haha! x

    1. It’s difficult to juggle blog writing / reading / commenting – I totally get it! (Plus, it seems like you’ve been working late according to you IG pic!) I think overall though, people know that you’re not one of those fly by night, follow for follow numbers chasers so no worries!

  4. Hey SM,
Can I just say – you are doing an AMAZING job on your No-Buy! I am 42 days in to my 100 Day No-Buy and it’s getting a little easier, but 250 DAYS, wow!!
Thank you for the nomination, lovely.

  5. Congratulations on making it so far on your no buy, you’re in the home stretch!

Do you have a plan for when you’re off your no buy? For me, that tends to be one of the difficult aspects of a no buy.

I need to find a way to incorporate “sextuply” into more daily conversation.

All of your advice is fantastic!

Thank you for the nomination! ❤

One of the things I enjoy about reading awards posts is finding new blogs to follow so I'm looking forward to checking out all of your nominees.

    1. I don’t have a solid plan yet… but I think in December I will post some shopping lists based on stores and plan my visits for shopping. I’m a shopaholic BUT I do enjoy saving money so I always plan my Sephora visits around their VIB sales, so likely I won’t go nuts there until at least March / April.
Yeah I love checking out all of the blogs that other people list too, that’s how I find new blogs too. 🙂

      1. I recently started using an actual planner and one of the things that I’ve been “planning” are purchases. I’m also a shopoholic (…obviously…) but I also enjoy having a specific purchase to look forward to. I need to get better about planning purchases around sales though.

  6. Congratulations. I have to say I think is is so impressive that you have managed 250 days, I would never be able to.
Also, congrats on the sextuple nomination: well deserved and some great tips. Thanks for nominating little old me, I will try to squeeze this in somewhere but I am so behind on these types of things 🙂

  7. Well done on reaching 250 days of No Buy!

And thank you for my nomination. I just did this tag so I won’t repeat it..but after reading yours I realized I didn’t do one of the requirements for the tag – give others tips.
    Whoops!

  9. Congrats on your award! I think the one thing that really helped me with blogging is your suggestions to jot your ideas down as soon as you get them. Since I started my blog in January, I’ve filled two notebooks. My little blog has taken off so well, that I’m finding it hard to juggle all of the events and responding to comments timely. It’s like a second full-time job…a great one! xoxox
