Would you believe that I used to sing in the church choir? Yup. As a tween I liked to sing but I am really not that good of a singer, so over the years I sing less and less. But I do secretly still love singing to Christmas songs. I even have a special playlist full of Christmas tunes that I look forward to playing come December (there’s a local radio station that plays 100% Christmas songs from Nov 25th till Christmas!) There are so many renditions of popular Christmas songs, and I have some favourite versions to share today.
God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen/We Three Kings – Barenaked Ladies feat. Sarah Mclachlan:
2000 Miles – Pretenders:
Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas – Coldplay (featuring Conan in an ugly Christmas sweater! The studio version is here.):
Happy Christmas (The War Is Over) – U2:
Oh Holy Night – Jennifer Hudson:
Do You Hear What I Hear- Whitney Houston (so tragic that she’s gone!):
While some of the songs above are religious hymns gone more mainstream, I still quite enjoy the traditional Christmas songs sung by choirs (most of these links will be to church choirs singing the songs):
• The First Noel
• It Came Upon the Midnight Clear
• Angels We Have Heard on High
• What Child is This?
• Once in Royal Davids City
• O Little Town of Bethlehem
And no Christmas would be complete without Handel’s Messiah and the singing of “For Unto Us a Child is Born”:
What are some of your favourite Christmas songs?

Usually we’ll play John Lennon – Happy Xmas, Do They Know It’s Christmas – Band Aid, All I Want of Christmas is You – Mariah Carey, any Christmas music by Bing Crosby or Johnny Mathis, Sleigh Ride/Marshmallow World – Christen Chenoweth, Rockin Around the Christmas Tree- Brenda Lee, Santa Baby – Eartha Kitt, I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Clause – Jackson 5, Sleigh Ride – Ronettes, Have yourself a Merry Little Christmas – Frank Sinatra. I can go on forever since I love Christmas music!

Thanks for your list! I’ve not heard Sleigh Ride/Marshmallow World by Christen Chenoweth! I will listen to it tonight!
I heard Rockin Around the Christmas Tree during Black Friday sales and it really put me in the Christmas spirit for sure! 😀

“Last Christmas – Wham!” and “Do they Know It’s Christmas? -Band Aid” almost made it on my list! But I reserved more space for the religious stuff. 😛
I’ve NEVER heard of the song “I Want an Alien for Christmas – Fountains of Wayne” lmao! I need to listen to it now.

I’m not religious, so I like the contemporary pop stuff instead. 😊

I’m not religious either lol! I guess I just grew up listening to those songs so they’re familiar to me. 😛

Michael Buble = Christmas is coming, haha. Definitely a sucker for covers done by pop artists. I love All I Want for Christmas is You by Mariah Carey (as do many people who read your blog, I see!) as well as Christmas (Baby Please Come Home). For whatever reason, I also love Jingle Bell Rock, I think because it reminds me of childhood Christmas concerts at school haha.

I feel the same way about Jingle Bell Rock too! It’s definitely a childhood favourite song – I mean, it’s got the word ROCK in the song! 😛

Love your list! It has quite a few songs that I also find myself listening to to get myself in the Christmas spirit. Because I preformed in Disney World’s Candlelight Processional 3 years in a row in high school, I tend to gravitate toward a more traditional playlist because practicing those songs meant that Christmas was near!

That’s so neat you were in the Disney World’s Candlelight Processional. Did you sing or play an instrument? I think traditional songs are meaningful, and the voices of a choir just sound so good!

Traditional songs really just FEEL like Christmas in a way that nothing else does because the are so meaningful.
I sang in the Candlelight Processional with my high school choir. We did 2 shows a night for 1-3 nights each year. It was really an awesome experience and not just because I got to meet Neil Patrick Harris.

He was the narrator when I went in 11th grade and he came back and like introduced himself to the choir during practice before the show.

Oh my gosh you’re like me! I used to go to a catholic elementary school, and I was in choir from grades 3-7 (singing in church, singing in school musicals, and other school singing events), I never ever considered myself as a good singer. Then in high school I got a dancing part in the school musical and was forced to join choir(sung in the Christmas parade and school events, and of course the musical)….but that was the end of my singing career. I think I can maybe carry a tune, but that’s about the end of that hahah! But I do love singing to Christmas songs! I used to play piano and Carol of the Bells was always a favourite!

I always wanted to sing the melody but I was more of a harmonizing part… I’m no soprano! I can carry a tune but I don’t have a strong voice. I remember in grade 9 I actually auditioned for the musical Oliver because my friends wanted to – she got in the chorus and I got to help with the set and backstage, lol! I played piano too but never played Carol of the Bells!

I was almost always harmony in elementary school choir hahah
In high school I was considered an alto, I honestly don’t have much of a strong range vocally, at all. Hahahahha oh my, there are no small parts, just small actors 😉 You basically helped the show happen!

For as much as I hear people complaining about Christmas music, I actually really love it! I have a couple of songs I don’t like (Santa Baby drives me bonkers) but for the most part I just enjoy Christmas music. My favorites tend to be the more religious songs because they’re so nostalgic. I love Handels Messiah, I like Little Drummer Boy, Greensleeves, Carol of the Bells (I used to play in a bell choir and that song was always fun).
I’m bookmarking your list so I can come back and check all of these out 🙂

Hmm yeah Santa Baby is a bit obnoxious, I can’t see why you dislike it.
I find religious music to be really inspirational! You used to play BELL? I was always so envious of that… I wanted to wear white gloves and play bell…

Me too! I think that the intricacy of a lot of religious music lends itself to inspiration.
I did! It was so fun!
