Blogmas Day 15: Christmas recipes

In today’s coordinated Babes in Blogland Blogmas post, we’re all sharing our favourite Christmas recipes… and I’m not qualified because I DON’T COOK OR BAKE!  So instead of sharing a recipe, today I’m showing you the gingerbread house I got:

Minions!  I’ve built a few gingerbread houses in my time – usually I like having a Christmas movie playing in the background and I go to town. 😀

When I bought it at the supermarket, the cashier positively squealed when she spotted this item, lol. Here’s what the package looks like fresh out of the box:

The instructions aren’t very detailed – nowhere did it say that these pieces needed to be cut apart, but I’m one of those people who likes to pre-plan before starting a project, so I knew these pieces looked dodgy!

Starting to glue the base structure:

I wish I could tell you this gingerbread house build went off without a hitch… but the damn icing wouldn’t STICK onto the gingerbread pieces! I assembled the base as shown and then proceeded to attached the roof, only for the base to collapse on me!  This is pre-roof, pre-collapse:

This is what it looks like after the 2nd attempt, notice the amount of icing I had to slap on the seams:

And because I had to use extra icing, I basically depleted my decorating glue for the gumdrops and sprinkles… I had to make do. Here it is assembled and decorated before I ran out of icing:

And less than an hour after it was assembled, one of the side walls caved in – the structure still stands but it’s a 3-walled house… “open concept living quarters” 😉  This was such a challenging experience for an adult to do, I can’t imagine making this as a kid!  Geez. 🙄

  3. Pretty dang good job, especially considering the glue was giving you problems! Hahaha love the minions in front of the house.
    It’s been a REALLY long time since I built a gingerbread house…the last time I was probably not even 10? Makes me want to try it again as an adult!
    This sounds like a silly question, but do you eat the house after, or just throw it away?

    1. Nope, I don’t eat the house after… it’ll be too stale by then! Although I was tempted to eat some of the gumdrops while I was building it…
      You totally should build a gingerbread house! Despite the challenges I faced with the icing, it was still fun and the house sits proudly in our living room. 😀

        1. Haha yes, she’s the in-laws. We will hang out with her during Christmas. We’ve been warned that our presents all have teeth marks on the boxes, and there are NO decorations this year. She’s quite a handful! 😛 She’s not even a year old yet so…

  10. You’re the best maker every 😉 Love the open concept living for sure, you should consider putting in a pool by the open wall for a nice backdrop! I haven’t seen this in the stores here but my son would love it, I’ll have to keep my eyes you! He calls minions “nana” cause of the banana song, lol.

  12. That came out pretty well. I’m amazed the gingerbread wasn’t smashed to bits once out of the box. Usually that’s our luck so I don’t buy the sets too often. We lucked out though for Halloween and found an intact haunted gingerbread house set at a craft store by us.

    1. I was a little bit worried the pieces would be broken too. I made sure I chose a box from the back of the shelf, because who know what grabby little hands have been on the front ones!
      Haha I’ve not seen a haunted gingerbread house before!

    1. Haha I didn’t curse much but my SO did walk by a few times and asked if I was still enjoying making it, since I kept saying “oh no! C’mon stay!”
      I googled “ginger baking background” and found that picture! 😀

  16. We tried doing it last year and yes the icing glue is tricky part.It’s a challenge to make all the four walls stand.Ours ended up like a storm just hit town hahaha! This year instead of building a gingerbread house, I bought just the gingerbread cookies for my little boy to decorate them. I do like your open concept house. Looks so good! 😉 xo

    1. I might do gingerbread cookies to decorate and EAT them! That’s the only thing about the gingerbread house – I don’t get to eat it since it’s so stale by the time Christmas is over.
