Blogmas Day 21: Christmas store windows & displays

One of the best things about the Holidays is seeing all of the store windows dressed up with festive displays. In Toronto, the Hudson’s Bay always put on an extravagant display in their windows which is highly anticipated when they’re unveiled in November.  I happened to be walking by when I noticed a van delivering this year’s holiday props:

Canada geese!  The windows behind them were still covered up at the time.

Here they are unveiled:

The figurines are mechanical so they move and have music playing too:

I remember one year they actually had live kittens in the displays in support of the local animal shelter!

Here are a couple of photos inside of the Hudson’s Bay store – this is where those Canada Geese went to:

And lastly, here are some photos of inside our downtown mall, the Eaton Centre.  A few years ago they brought out these giant reindeer – I find them a bit gaudy but people seem to love them:

We really like our Canada Geese:

There used to be a beautiful Christmas tree made of thousands of Swarovski crystals but it was retired and replaced with this one which has received mixed reviews:

And that’s what our stores look like at Christmas time. How do they decorate the local stores / shopping malls where you live?

  1. Wow you guys go all out with your geese *caugh* I mean decorations! Seriously though, I can’t think of any stores here that decorate like that. We get the trees and wreaths and stuff but that’s about it. The windows look so pretty.

    1. It’s a bit crazy with the geese huh! I didn’t realize how much geese and moose we use in our decorations until I was taking the pictures. 😛 We get a lot of tourists here so guess they want to amp it up.

    1. This is their flagship location so I guess they put more effort into it. This is the store that will be half converted into a Saks – they’re in the middle of renovations right now – I can’t wait to see how that’ll be. Although, I’m not entirely sure the difference between Saks and the Bay? At least with Nordstrom I know it’s more similar to Holts but I’m not sure of the difference between Saks and the Bay and they’re now the same company.
I didn’t like the display at Holts this year… didn’t really look festive to me!

      1. Interesting, I thought they would be opening full Saks stores, not half-converting some Bay stores to Saks.
Have no idea how they’ll do the whole Bay/Saks thing because in terms of customer base, Saks is much closer to Holts than the Bay…very confusing. Then again, there are so many American department stores, I get them confused all the time hahaha.
I didn’t like this year’s Holt Renfrew display either! 😦

        1. Originally they were planning to convert a full Bay store over to Saks but then they changed their minds, I’m not sure why. It’ll be interesting to see! I’m mainly interested in both Nordstrom and Saks coming to see what beauty brands they will offer that’s different! 😀

          1. I’m interested to see what Saks will be like too! We have a Nordstrom here, and all the brands there can be found at either The Bay or Nordstrom. Maybe the ones opening in Toronto will be bigger and have more of a selection!

  2. Great pictures! I miss living and working in New York but especially during the holiday season. I use to work for a fashion company in midtown and would chat up our window designers to know what they were planning before hand. Checking out the windows of the big stores in NYC is a favorite past time.

    1. Oh yes, I can imagine NYC windows would be PIMPED up! I always remember the line from 30 Rock, when Steve Martin’s character says “Come with me to Canada. Toronto is just like New York, but without all the stuff.” 😛

    1. The window displays is something I look forward to every season! I have so much respect for those window designers. I remember having a part time job at Claire’s and getting to do their window displays… it’s not as easy as it looks! 😛
