OPI Nail Polish Dealio

I was SO excited when I spied this deal at a small hair salon while walking around on my lunch hour during Boxing Week.  A handwritten sign: “4 for $20 or $7 each” – a full OPI display, hardly picked over.  JAW DROP! Usually, OPI costs $12-$15 a bottle here.  I was with a couple of coworkers, and I was still on my No-Buy, so I had to play it cool.  I asked the owner if I could set aside 4 shades and that I’d come back in 2 days to pick them up. I went back on the Monday after my No-Buy finished and bought the 4 polishes, and then some…

This is what $100 worth of OPI nail polishes looks like! 😮

Prior to acquiring these 20 bottles, I actually only owned 13 OPIs – I just don’t gravitate toward the brand for some reason.  And now I’ve more than doubled my collection!  Here are all the polishes in (kinda) alphabetical order (I’ve indicated in brackets what year and collection they’re from, if any):
OPI_2016haul_3
1. Big Apple Red
2. Brisbane Bronze (2007 Australia)
3. Do You Take Lei Away? (2015 Hawaii)
4. First Class Desires (Holiday 2014 Gwen Stefani)
5. Gouda Gouda Two Shoes (2012 Holland)
OPI_2016haul_4
6. Got the Blues for Red (2005 Chicago)
7. I Don’t Give a Rotterdam (2012 Holland)
8. I Have a Herring Problem (2012 Holland)
9. I Knead Sour-Dough (Fall 2013 San Francisco)
10. Java Mauve-A
OPI_2016haul_5
11. Lucerne-tainly Look Marvelous (2010 Swiss)
12. Muir Muir On The Wall (Fall 2013 San Francisco)
13. OPI Red
14. Peace Love and OPI (Fall 2013 San Francisco)
15. Put It In Neutral (2015 Soft Shades)
OPI_2016haul_6
16. Red Fingers and Mistletoes (Holiday 2014 Gwen Stefani)
17. Tickle My France-y (Fall 2008 La Collection De France)
18. Suzi Sells Sushi by the Seashore
19. Wooden Shoe Like To Know (2012 Holland)
20. You Don’t Know Jacques! (Fall 2008 La Collection De France)

I think my excitement was mostly due to the fact that these were the first nail polishes I bought in person this year (all my nail polish purchases so far have been online orders).  The salon owner told me the reason they were selling these OPIs off so cheaply was due to having too much inventory and their customers now preferred gel polish instead. I might possibly – probably – go back to get some more, they had at least 100 colours available! 😀

Are you a fan of OPI polishes? Do you have any of these? I hope I got some good ones!

    1. I applied Muir Muir On The Wall last night and it`s a lot darker and less duochrome-y on the nails than in the bottle. So, yes, swatches are in order – bottle colour LIES. 😛 (I do like the colour, for the record, just different than the bottle)

  1. The only OPI polishes I’ve ever purchased were their sand/glitter ones. Love those for long wear (I have incredibly soft nails and because I’m a hair dresser my hands are in water a lot so that doesn’t help much either) They had a great variety of colors and they are consistent in terms of formula across the whole collection. My only complaint is that they are a real pain to get off. If you see any of those they’re great for an accent nail or two but if you put them all over both hands you will hate yourself when removal time comes around.

    1. Yes, I’m with you – I only have OPI glitters – they’re SO pretty. I have a couple of those Designer Series holographic ones too – they`re more expensive but worth it to me.
And yes, they’re PITA to get off! Have you ever tried a nail strengthener or hardener? My nails aren’t super soft, but they do tend to peel in layers. I’m currently testing out the Orly Nailtrition – so far so good.

      1. I have tried just about every nail strengthener and hardener on the market and they just don’t work for me. Even hair, skin, and nail vitamin supplements don’t help my nails to come in stronger. The only thing that seems to help (which probably isn’t the best for my nails) is a thin coating of nail glue as a base coat to any nail polish.

  2. For the longest time I had an addiction to OPI so I probably own about 200 of them but surprisingly I have bought any in a long time. I think at this point most of the new collections are similar to polishes I have so I moved on to hoarding eye shadow palettes lol OPI is a great brand though and is what I’m wearing 99% of the time! Great choices!

    1. Wow, I never got into OPI. I felt their formula was too thick and goopy. I prefer thinner consistency (like Essie). But, I think maybe the formulas are different now? I just applied Muir Muir On the Wall last night and it was fine. I’m pretty sure all the collections are just rehashes of previous collections – so many similar colours! You should do a nail polish collection post! 🙂

  3. Woooooow I wanna ask where this was, but I SHOULD NOT. 😀 I just bought some Essies!

Fantastic deals! Hoooly crap. Great shades, too. Suzi Sells Sushi is a fave of mine!

Very interesting what the salon owner said about people preferring gel polish now; makes sense, I guess. :p

    1. Are you SURE you don’t want to know? 😉
I wasn’t sure about Suzi Sells Sushi – it looked frosty – but I’m shocked you like it, it’s not your usual ammo, is it?
I want the whole Retro Revival collection, I think.

      1. Hahaha! Yes, I DON’T wanna know! (Now watch me scour downtown for random little nail salons…) Suzi Sells Sushi is gorge! It’s one of the few pinks I like on me. It’s warm enough so it’s not PEEEENK, but it’s not entirely peachy or beigey, either. Maybe a little frosty, but it tends to look more satin/pearl to me. I loved that Japanese collection, and wish I’d bought more of them at the time.

On Essie, I will have all six! I already had Sequin Sash (eh), Cabana Boy (not my thing), and Life of the Party (love). I really only wanted SSN, but in the interests of completion, I picked up the other two. Plus I didn’t want much else from NPC but wanted free shipping…

        1. I originally only wanted SSN and the softer shades but I saw the red (Life of the Party) and I really like it too. Yeah Sequin Sash is so dated looking – I think it could be nice layered over a beige creme.
Gosh, I just looked up the OPI Japanese collection – that came out in 2005! I just looked up the colours – man, those nudes and beiges look amazing! 😛

    1. You Don’t Know Jacques is such a classic OPI shade! I’m so happy to have snagged it. I can’t wait to try the duochromes too. I did apply Muir Muir On The Wall last night and it`s a lot darker and less duochrome-y on the nails than in the bottle… I’ll do a swatch post of all my OPIs coming up.

  4. Oh. My. Gosh. WANT. I have zero OPI polishes (unless you count a mini bottle I received in a Birchbox this year), but I love seeing swatches of all their new collections. From this haul, I really want Lucerne-tainly Look Marvelous and Muir Muir on the Wall. I pretty much loved everything I saw from the Swiss and San Francisco collections (yet I somehow bought none of them…)

    1. I have a few OPI minis and I hate them! I only got them because I couldn’t commit to the colours but I should just toss them – I don’t like the brushes on them at all.
I’m wearing Muir Muir on the Wall today and it’s darker on the nails than how it looks in the bottle. I plan to go through all my nail polishes and do swatches like I did with my Illamasquas. I need to buy more of those swatching spoons! 😛 I *almost* applied Lucerne-tainly – it’s so pretty in the bottle!

  5. Such a great deal! I haven’t tried many OPI shades but what I have I’ve been very impressed with the formula! I’ve got Tickle My France-y too although I actually haven’t used it cause I can’t get the bottle open haha! It looks really nice tho!

    1. Aw maybe try to run the bottle under warm water? I do that whenever I can’t open jars and it works a charm! Tickle My France-y is such a “me” shade – I might layer a shimmer over it to jazz it up.

  6. Nice job scoring such a great deal, and nice picks!! Just look at them duochromes…hahaha. Although I read your comment above that Muir Muir on the Wall is not as duochrome-y as in the bottle, which is disappointing. I looked at swatches and Peace Love and OPI looks GORGEOUS. There are so many versions of that grey/purple/blue duochrome out there, and many of them are either sheer or not duochrome-y enough, but this one looks promising!

Suzi Sells Sushi and Red Fingers and Mistletoes also catch my eye – have been looking for a nice opaque medium pink and a sparkly red!

    1. I almost didn’t buy Peace Love and OPI because I already have Essie For the Twill of it. But I saw that online reviews say OPI’s formula is better so I had to see the difference for myself. I’ll likely pass some of these polishes onto my sister. 🙂
I’ve been on a hunt for medium pinks lately too – I realize that I don’t have many pinks in my collection (I have lots of sheer baby pinks though).

  7. OMG these shades are amazing! I can’t even imagine how long it would take to swatch all of these and try each one out. What four shades did you initially set aside if you don’t mind me asking? 🙂

    1. If I recall correctly, I asked to put on hold Tickle My France-y, Do You Take Lei Away? (because they were the last ones left), Java Mauve-A and Put It In Neutral. Basically, all the boring neutrals! 😛

  8. Holy cow, some of those duochrome shades look incredible! I don’t generally gravitate towards OPI either but I should, I’m always quite pleased with the quality.
The only shade that I have out of this bunch is I Have A Herring Problem which is lovely but I’ve only worn it once. Again, I tend to not gravitate towards OPI even within my own collection.
Are you going to do manicure posts on these as you wear them? You picked lovely shades!

    1. I applied Muir Muir on the Wall on Thursday night and it’s already chipped! However, I might have done a sloppy job – who knows. I don’t typically find my polishes to chip that quickly with any brand (I did apply a top coat).
Yes I’ll do swatches and mani posts with these… I usually only change my polishes once a week but with the influx of new polishes, I’m going to have to switch out the colours more often! 😛

  9. Oh my! What an amazing polish haul. I totally get it, because that sounds like a great deal. Can’t wait to see all of these lovely shades pop up on your blog 🙂

  10. Well aren’t you just so lucky!!!!😄😄😄😄 that is amazing !!!! I would of probably gone crazy too! Opi is so pricey but totally worth it! I find they last way longer than your average other nail polish! And you chose some amazing shades! I don’t own any of these shades but I did have some of those in my wishlist which sadly I can’t find those shades anywhere anymore. Such an amazing deal! Lol woohoo!

  11. I am dying. Look at all those beauties! Red Fingers and Mistletoes makes me want to douse my entire hand in that shade. Peace Love and OPI is another one that I desperately need. That was one heck of a deal.

  12. I used to love OPI and had a ton of these polishes as my aunt owned a nail salon, but since i discovered Rimmel London, I gave away majority of my OPI polishes. I wish they last that long on my nails but they never lasted even just for a week. Love your posts though.. And by the way found some OPI polishes for $2.00 in one of our stores here too as they’re on clearance as well. 🙂

    1. Ooh OPI for $2?! Crazy! I’m going to have to try Rimmel then, since you seem to really like them. I recalled having one bottle a long time ago but I gave it away. I didn’t remember it being really good but maybe they improved their quality. I typically like to wear my mani for a full week but I think this year I’ll be changing them more often so I can try out all the polishes I’ve bought! 😉

      1. That’s the way to try out polishes! I always look for polishes that will last me a week.. That’s how I know that they’re good. In fact, China Glaze is better that OPI if we talk about staying power.. It just so happen that OPI is the most used polishes in Salons.. But I don’t know.. They tend to chip on me so quickly.

    1. It was uber excited about this deal! I’ve been buying nail polish like a fiend. Just you wait and see… I have a summary of all the nail polishes I got in the month of Jan (and it’s not over yet!) 😉

  13. The Chatters I was at this weekend was clearing out a few of the ones you purchased for $5 and I picked out a bunch and then noticed they looked kind of dried up so I didn’t end up buying them. Plus I need to do a nailpolish declutter before I buy anymore.
Had to laugh at your comment about “playing it cool” with your co-workers. Lol!

    1. I keep hearing about this Chatters! I wish we had that here. We have Trade Secrets, do you have those?
Too bad the OPI bottles were dried up – that’s probably why they were clearing them out.
If only my coworkers knew about my makeup collection lol! 😛

      1. We have Trade Secrets but very few of them! Chatters is like Trade Secrets but better. They have all the salon-brand hair products, hair tools, and nail polishes like OPI, China Glaze and CND. There’s only one Trades Secrets in my city, at least that I’m aware of.
If only Ulta would make it’s way up here – I feel like they would be hugely successful!
