Project Focus 10: Guerlain Lingerie De Peau BB

Last week I introduced the collaboration Project Focus 10 collaboration and showed the 10 products that I’ll be focusing on for the next 10 weeks.  Today is the first of the series of more detailed reviews on one of the items: Guerlain Lingerie De Peau BB Beauty Booster Invisible Skin-Fusion Multi-Perfecting Makeup SPF 30:

I have this in 01 Light and it is available in 3 shades, ranging from fair to medium skin tone.  It retails for $62 for a 40ml tube and is available at Hudson’s Bay and select Shoppers Drug Mart Beauty Boutiques.

The BB cream comes in a slender tube which also has a pump under the cap. Compared to other Guerlain packaging, this is downright utilitarian, but I really like its simplicity.

The pump dispenses a small amount of product per pump which I prefer – one pump is enough for a thin layer to cover my entire face. This product is also quite buildable.

The colour 0 Light is on the pink side and slightly too light for me, however, if I apply a sheer layer, it blends into my skin fine.  This BB cream, suprisingly, packs quite a bit of coverage. I would call the coverage a medium satin matte – it’s not dewy like most other BB creams on the market. I can apply this with my fingers to provide a seamless finish, however, the best way to apply this I’ve found is with a makeup sponge due to its thicker consistency. The lasting power is also very good – I get a bit of shine in my t-zone by mid-afternoon but nothing that blotting paper can’t solve.

Content-wise, the sunscreen ingredients are a mixture of physical and chemical: Titanium Dioxide 3.55%, Octinoxate 3.74%, Oxybenzone 1%. Other skin benefiting ingredients include: glycerin, glycol, and hyaluronic acid. Some may find these ingredients to be irritating: alcohol (11th on the list), and fragrance (mid-way on the ingredient list).  The fragrance to this product is what I would call slightly floral but it’s not overly offensive to me. The smell reminds me of Nivea’s cream – I suspect the fragrance was added to mask the sunscreen smell.

While I liked the coverage and finish, I think for people with sensitivity to scents or cannot find a suitable colour within the very limited shade range, I would offer an alternative: MAC’s BB cream. This reminded me a lot of that coverage and finish, actually. And MAC’s is free of added fragrance (although it does smell a little like sunscreen), is offered in 12 colours and costs only $37 for the same amount of product.

I’ve owned the Guerlain BB cream for just over a year (yes, the tube says expiry after 9M but meh, the product consistency and scent is fine) and I redeemed Optimum Points for it so it was “free”. I likely would not repurchase it since there are much cheaper BB creams on the market but it was a nice to try out a luxury brand’s take on a BB cream. I’ve been wearing this daily since Project Focus 10 started and my goal is to use this up by Spring time. 🙂

Notes on the other Project Focus 10 items:
• I finally started using the Smashbox Double Exposure palette! It’s always bittersweet to dip a makeup brush into a perfect, unblemished pan. Kind of like walking on freshly fallen snow.
• The Orly Nailtrition has been saving my dry winter nails like a champ! I’ve only had 2 peeling nails compared to usually 5 or 6.
• Last week I tried using the Smashbox Photo Finish Primer Water as a finishing spray only – I’m not sure how I feel about it using it for this purpose. I’m going to try using it as a spray before foundation this week instead.

    This BB Cream sounds quite overpriced for what it is – Guerlain, eh? I haven’t tried many BB Creams (never got into the initial craze) and just use Missha M Signature ATM – I’m actually wearing it today! How’ve you found the Western BB Creams to stack up against the Asian ones? The MAC sounds like it would be a good option just because of all the shades available!

    1. I mainly got this because I bought the Lingerie de Peau foundation which I like a lot. But I wasn’t willing to pay this much for a BB cream (whereas I’m more agreeable to spending $$$ on foundations?)
      Yes I had the Missha BB cream and unfortunately it broke me out! I think the culprit in that one was the inclusion of macadamia oil. It’s difficult to make a general comparison between Western and Asian BB cream – I’d say that most Western BB creams do try to cater to more skintones, whereas Asian ones tend to be very narrow in shade range (understandably, since their population’s skintones are much more homogeneous). I also find Asian BB creams tend to have an ashier / grey undertone whereas Western ones are more pink or beige toned.
      The Nailtrition is for the nails, not the cuticles! I use it as a primer before my Orly Bonder 😛

      1. Oh man, that sucks about the Missha! Yes, the Asian BB Cream color selection stinks, but hey, I’m Asian so…it works 🙂 It definitely is kinda grey, but I find it goes away after I blend in. Very weird about the grey tone. But then, I have trouble with lot of Western foundations going too peachy or pink…sometimes even too yellow. 😛

  4. If you read today’s post you will know that my favorite BB cream is the Dr Jart+ Premium BB … Like you said I think the pink undertone in this Guerlain BB would bother me & MAC has a similar BB that cost only 37$ !!! Very good in dept review 🙂 xo’s

            Unfortunately my local Sephora doesn’t have the friendliest associates:( (They look at me funny when I request samples … I ask anyway :P)

              I’ll never understand why Sephora associates are so rude. It’s their business model to provide samples! I’m not apt to buy something if I get a chance to try it first (provided that I don’t break out from it!)

I was all excited about this BB cream — the swatch was beautiful, the finish sounded great — until I scrolled back up to find the price. *sigh* Even the MAC is more than I usually spend on base products, although maybe that should change. (Also, I love the editing you did to the photo at the beginning! It’s a really cool way of showing which of the 10 products you’re focusing on).

    1. Yeah, Guerlain is definitely a luxury brand and the prices reflect that. I just don’t think this particular BB cream is worth it. I’ll enjoy it for what it is and then part ways. 🙂

  6. That is great but cream and I totally agree that is certainly over priced for a BB cream. Well, the swatches look absolutely pretty with blending and I really adore the simplicity of the packaging when compared to other products from their range and what a good start of this topic!     1. Yes the coverage is really nice and the packaging is great… but there are so many good quality BB creams out in the market at much lower prices. I guess if you really love Guerlain, this is a good product to have in your collection. 🙂 Thanks so much!

        2. To check your spam, do to your dashboard and then go to comments, there’s a tab for “spam” – if it’s not spam, just click on “not spam” to release it. It’s really annoying because if you don’t do this, it will label any comments that I make on your blog as spam forever. This happened to me on another blog before too. 😦

          1. Thanks! I just discovered how to do this a second before I saw your comment…I never even knew how to access my dashboard (four months blogging and still acting like a noob!) Apparently the dashboard should be the first thing you see when you log in, but it isn’t for me?

              Yes the dashboard is always my first screen – I much prefer posting through the dashboard than the other interface. It’s a lot more stable in my opinion. Sorry I “spammed” you. I think something is going on with my account today because I just left comments on other blogs and they’re all going to spam… damn you WordPress!

                How strange. I remember seeing the dashboard when I first started my blog, then it was never to be seen again. At first I tried to figure out how to access it, but eventually just forgot about it…on the bright side, your comment getting sent to spam helped me figure that out! Am liking the dashboard WAY more 🙂
                Oh dang, hoping WordPress works this issue out…would be VERY bad if your comments kept getting sent to people’s spam! 😦

                1. I posted a question on the WP forum for help. It’s really frustrating now. I’ve left probably half dozen comments and they’re all going to spam. No point in commenting at all until this is resolved. 😦 I even cleared my cache and everything!
                  The dashboard is OLD SCHOOL – I have it bookmarked so I always log in that way. Yay, so glad you rediscovered it! 🙂

  8. Interesting, I have been meaning to swatch this for a while now. it is a little overpriced (well, it is Guerlain so no surprises there), but it seems to wear well and I like the high SPF. It will probably be too light though, I hate the limited color choices.

    1. Yes it’s too bad about the shade range offering. My friend who is darker than the medium shade was super annoyed she couldn’t try this. I hope the cosmetics companies will start re-evaluating their colour range!

  9. This is my FAVOURITE bb cream of all the bb creams I’ve ever tried. I use 1 to 1.5 pumps for amazing silky coverage of any red blotchiness & it doesn’t sink into my “fine lines” (others seem to magnify this striated texture).
    But I’m not repurchasing as I’m trying to avoid oxybenzone (photoallergenic, endocrine disruption, accumulation & restricted use in Japan) in products. Probably going to switch to Pacifica’s next.

    1. Yeah I can see why you’d like the finish, it is really silky and looks flawless (it IS loaded with silicones), but I don’t find it to be THAT much better than other BB creams.
      And yes, I’m not a fan of the chemical sunscreens myself – that’s why I love that Charmzone BB cream, it only has physical sunscreen ingredients. That’s still my favourite BB cream:

  10. I’ve only ever tired drugstore bb creams lol. The L’Oréal and Garnier ones. I liked them but the shades were always too off. That’s one thing I hate about bb creams the shade selection is sometimes very limited! :/ I would love to try this product but woah it’s a pricey one, maybe the mac one lol since it’s more reasonable 😛

BB creams are meant to be all-in-one type of products so they provide sunscreen, anti-aging, priming, hydration… and whatever else they claim! 😉 But mostly, they’re very good base – typically more sheer / natural coverage with high SPF. They were originally from Korea and have migrated over to Western countries – there are some good drugstore options nowadays! http://www.redbookmag.com/fashion/style/g608/best-drugstore-bb-cream/

  13. That’s quite expensive! I usually just use my current bb cream to thin out my foundation and add extra moisturizer, so for me that wouldn’t justify paying so much for Guerlain. I will give it a thumbs up for the packaging because I like the idea of a pump and for the SPF.

  14. Still committed to my It Cosmetics CC cream, but any of the BBs I’ve tried in the past haven’t worked for me due to the shade issues. They’re always too pink an too light, or make me oily.
