Foundation and Concealer Purge of 2016

This has been a long time coming. I just needed to set some time aside and be in the right mood to be serious about getting rid of some items from my stash. Sometimes I feel a bit attached to items due to nostalgia and I talk myself into keeping stuff I really shouldn’t. I think I did well:

Since I’ve been hauling like a madwoman, it’s only fair to purge some stuff too! Tomorrow I’ll be purging some lip products.  Let’s have a closer look at the foundation and concealer purge pile:

Foundations / Powders

foundation_purge_2016_3
Cover Girl Outlast Stay Fabulous 3-in-1 Foundation SPF20 in 932 Nude Beige
This is my favourite drugstore foundation, however I don’t wear it often because it is a higher coverage longwear formula that I reserve for special occasions. I’ve had this bottle for a couple of years and it’s about halfway through. No sense in keeping it around. I can always repurchase it at any time.

Vichy Aera Teint Pure Fluid Foundation Finish Up to 12 Hour Wear in 23 Ivory
I love this foundation but unfortunately it’s discontinued. This formula is better suited for the summer months but I also tend to wear less makeup in the summer time. This bottle is 4 years old so it’s time to trash it – I used up about 60% of it. I need a moment of silence. 😦

Milani Minerals Mousse Foundation in Nude Buff 302
I still remember finding this at Winners – I was so happy to have found Milani in person! This is a great foundation for the summer months. The mousse texture leaves the skin feeling velvety smooth and keeps the shine away for the whole day. However, it does have a tendency to cling to any dry patches on the skin. Also, the bottle I have is funky because there’s no inner tube to pump out the product, so I have to use a Q-tip to dig out a bit of product every time I want to use it. I learned that this foundation is discontinued now.

Revlon PhotoReady Airbrush Mousse Makeup in 003 Nude
Yes, this foundation has SHIMMER in it, but it does look really nice on the skin, giving it an luminous airbrushed appearance. The shade Nude is too fair and peachy for me which is so odd since I’m normally a nude or buff shade in every drugstore foundation. I kept this mainly to mix with foundations that were too dark for me.

Sephora Perfection Mist Airbrush Foundation in Fair
Also too light on me, but the next shade up would have been too dark. I got caught up on the whole aerosol can airbrush makeup craze a couple years back. It’s really gimmicky – I never spray this directly onto my face so there’s really no reason why it needs to be dispensed through an aerosol can format.

Missha Perfect Cover BB Cream SPF 42 in 23 Natural Beige
This unfortunately broke me out! I suspect it was the macadamia oil in it. So disappointed – this BB cream had been on my wish list for ages. Ah well. It looks dark and grey when it’s first applied but it adjusts on the skin and looks normal.  This is a fairly new item and barely used so I’ll give this to a friend.

Skin79 Diamond Absolute Total BB Cream
I got this in the travel size to try out and I’m glad I did. I don’t like this formula as much as the hot pink one. This is slightly too mask-like looking on the skin and doesn’t seem to “settle” like the hot pink ones does. The bottle is nearly done with this one anyway. The next Skin79 formula I want to try is the orange one, with SPF50!

Lise Watier HydraSmart 3D Hydration Tinted Veil in Teint Claire
I liked this when I first started using it, but recently I’ve found it to feel too greasy on my skin. I reach for this less and less so there’s no point hanging onto it. I’ve had this tube for 2 years. This colour is also slightly too orange on me. I find it funny the product has now the added “BB Crème” in the name – it’s the exact same product.

Garnier Miracle Skin Perfector Daily All-in-One BB Cream in Light / Medium
I haven’t tried many North American BB creams but this was the first one I tried and it made a good impression on me. It has decent coverage and feels very comfortable on the skin. The only issue is that the lightest shade is slightly too dark for me.

Maybelline Dream Wonder Powder in 60 Sandy Beige
Found this in a clearance bin and bought it knowing full well it’s too dark for me – I thought I could contour or use it in the summer months. Turns out I don’t much care for the formula anyway. Going to a better home.

MAC Prep+Prime Transparent Finishing Powder
I didn’t care for this powder. I showed it briefly as a comparison in my Nars Light Reflecting Loose Setting Powder review – it’s a rather unimpressive translucent loose powder that I find to look unnatural and powdery on my skin. I’m going to Back to MAC this.

Concealers

foundation_purge_2016_8
MAC Pro Longwear Concealer in NC20
I’ve had this bottle for 4 years – I only use this on my under eye area when I need something super long wearing. I have a love / hate relationship with this concealer. While it truly is remarkable for how long it lasts and doesn’t crease, it can look a bit heavy on the skin. It requires careful blending and prep of the skin to make it look seamless. The colour match is perfect for me though.  It also smells like a wet dog. And let’s not talk about the silly pump that dispenses 5 times the amount of product required. I got through about half of this. It’s also going to Back to MAC (I think I have enough for another free lipstick / eye shadow now!)

Physician’s Formula Conceal RX in Natural Light
This is a heavy duty spot concealer.  It can look cakey if not carefully blended.  This particular product isn’t available in Canada so I had to order it online. I’ve just had this tube for way too long.

Mary Kay Concealer in Beige 1 and 2
I used to love this concealer. But over time I felt it looked too heavy and dry under the eye area. Perhaps my tubes are just really, really old (I’m guessing close to 5 years 😳 ) The coverage and wear time of this concealer is amazing. I have to mix 2 parts Beige 1 with 1 part Beige 2 to get a suitable colour match. I’m not counting these out yet – I might repurchase.

Lise Watier Portfolio Professional Correctors in Regular
This is my HG spot concealer. It’s industrial strength concealing without looking cakey or heavy. However, I hate the fact that I don’t use 60% of this palette. I only use the 2 lightest beige tones (ivory and yellow beige) to conceal spots. I tried to use the green corrector once for redness around my nose and it looked too obvious.
foundation_purge_2016_10
The concealers recently started to smell off so I decided it was time to toss – I’ve been using this for just over 2 years. I wish LW would come out with singles of just the beige colours. I’m undecided if I’ll repurchase this version or get the Beiges palette that looks like this:
foundation_purge_2016_14
Or if I should re-try MAC’s Studio Finish concealer, which I used to use ages ago but found it kind of cakey looking.  What’s your HG spot concealer?
foundation_purge_2016_11
Coastal Scents Bright Eyed in Light
This is a great dark circle corrector with a pinky peach undertone but it’s not quite pigmented enough for my needs. It’s a thinner consistency so I have to let it dry out on my skin a bit before blending. I’ve had this tube for 4 years.

Bobbi Brown Corrector in Light Bisque
On my quest for a dark circle corrector, I went with one of the cult favourites. Unfortunately, I found this to be too greasy and it caused my concealer to crease badly. I’m just glad I got this item for free when I redeemed Optimum Points.
foundation_purge_2016_13
Maybelline Fit Me Concealer in 20 Sand
This has grown on me lately. It could be that I’m now pairing it with the Becca corrector which seems to make this product work better. However, I’ve been trying to use this tube up for the past 2 years and it’s like the never ending tube – I think I’m 85% done. Time to toss.

Maybelline Face Studio Master Conceal in Light / Medium 30
This is one of the newer concealers in my stash and I just don’t like it very much. It’s very runny and doesn’t provide much coverage, and it doesn’t last well on me. I know some people really love this but it just didn’t work for me.

20 items purged! 😀

And out of these, I’d only repurchase 3 of them: Cover Girl Outlast Foundation, Lise Watier Portfolio Professional Correctors, and Mary Kay Concealers.

I have my eye on the following face products to try next:
Maybelline SuperStay Better Skin Foundation
Nars Radiant Creamy Concealer
Nars All Day Luminous Foundation
Kevyn Aucoin The Sensual Skin Enhancer
MAC Studio Finish SPF35 Concealer

Have you tried any of these products?  Any thoughts on the items I want try next?

    1. Aw yeah I can see how some people would find the LW Portfolio to be too dry. It’s really not that good for concealing large areas. It is however, perfect for pinpoint concealing which is what I primarily need it for. It’s so pigmented. – just a TINY amount on a pointed synthetic brush and it’s perfect!
Spoiler alert, I got the UD Naked Skin concealer from the SDM Redemption! 😀 But I have to go exchange because they put in the WRONG shade grrr.

    1. Yes it was very bulky. I considered depotting the 2 shades into their own individual pots. But now I’m faced with repurchasing it or an alternative, I’m thinking of going with the MAC. I hope your decluttering goes well! It’s crazy how foundations and concealers accumulate…

  1. Ah! I did this yesterday too and filled up about half of a full sized trash bag…my boyfriend looked at it and shook his head lol! But I get $$$ to spend on Lancôme products since I work for them and I had to make room for new things 🙂
I know we’ve talked about it but I use the Nars Creamy Radient concealer and I adore it. I’m the lightest shade and I do have to color correct before but it covers so well and it’s thick without creasing so it’s my current fav.

    1. I’m 100% getting the Nars concealer!!! Thanks for re-enforcing my decision to get it. Just waiting a bit so I can justify it lol (Sephora VIB sale in April). I really should go and ask them to apply it on me first at the store to see what colour I’d be and how I like it.
You lucky duck with your beauty allowance from Lancome! 😛 I filled up a shopping bag with my purge so far. I still have a few miscellaneous things to sort though. My SO was shaking his head too.

  2. Oh man, you do love your foundations/concealers! This purge is both uplifting and painful, but maybe I’m just too attached to physical things… good for you, seriously! =) Have you checked out Sephora’s concealer? It’s that bright future gel one that’s supposed to be a dupe for the NARS creamy concealer, at a much lower price point.

    1. No! I’ve not heard of the Sephora one. I just looked online and it’s $17 CAD vs $36 for the Nars. And it’s offered in whopping 20 colours compared to 10 of Nars! Wow. Thanks for alerting me. I’m going to Sephora at lunch to check it OUT! 😀

  3. Nice job! I remember being so tempted by that Lise Watier variety palette back in the day. I make do with a Sonia Kashuk palette (the quad of 4) but never touch the lightest shade. After that, I’ll be using a Revlon ColorStay (the doe foot in the tube) for both undereye and for spots.

I had a couple of MIssha BBs and they all did the same thing – look kind of grey/ashy and then adjust. No breaking out here though.

    1. Thank you! I’ve eyed the SK palette before, it has good reviews too. I’ve been curious about the Revlon ColorStay concealer – may I ask what shade you’re in that? I think I’m similar colouring as you.

    1. I was surprised at how the swatches compare against each other! And some of them look like they match ok but on the face they appear different. I plan to swatch the foundations and concealers that I’ve kept in an upcoming post! 😊

  4. I’m pretty curious about the NARS concealer too but I’ll have to save it for the next time I’m actually in a Sephora store. It’s super hard finding concealer that matches my skin tone! With the dollar being what it is I don’t think I’ll be venturing into a Sephora any time soon. It sucks that I’m closer to American Sephoras than Canadian ones!

    1. I’ve noticed a lot of price adjustments at Sephora Canada. I keep track of how much I pay for things and now everything is a few more bucks more… as if we wouldn’t notice! That’s why I’ll just wait until we get 20% off from VIB sale – at least it helps somewhat with the price increases.

      1. Oh really? I haven’t noticed yet but I haven’t purchased much from Sephora lately. I have been trying my very best to be good until the VIB sale! I had a bad feeling everything would start to slowly increase with how our dollar is these days… 😦

  5. I love the MAC Pro Longwear concealer so much but I do not like the pump at all, I always get so much product out and if I’m trying to be careful I get too little out, there’s no winning with the pump! Haha

  6. Looks like a great purge, I totally feel you about holding onto things due to nostalgia. The other day I realised I’ve kept my very first high-end purchase, a blush from Bobbi Brown which I bought 9 years ago…time to let go methinks lol! Also you NEED to try the Urban Decay Naked Skin concealer, I’ve literally stopped using everything else since I started using it, but it needs a good brush like the Real Techniques setting brush to apply it for full coverage! Jay xx

    1. I’m toying with the idea of going through my blushes and eye shadows – powder products I tend to hang onto forever but I know some colours just don’t work for me so I should really let them go.
Spoiler alert: I got the UD Naked concealer! Someone else recommended it to me and there was a points redemption event over the weekend at our drugstore. They carry UD but not Nars so I figured I’ll give that a try! Post coming tomorrow. 🙂

    1. I want it BADLY. I’ve researched the shades extensively and I still haven’t narrowed it down. Some days I think I’m SX06, some days SX07. I haven’t considered SX04 at all… ugh.

  7. I’m surprised you like the Revlon one. It didn’t do anything for me except dry skin my out. I guess different strokes for different folks. I now only use Make Up Forever’s foundation. It’s expensive but it covers the best for me and it doesn’t feel heavy. Oh and Nars concealer is everything!

    1. I did remember the Revlon one being quite drying and almost mask-like on its own but I always mixed that one with something else which balanced it out. I do have one MUFE foundation – the Face & Body – which is quite nice. I did have the HD one (the old HD one) and it broke me out unfortunately!

  8. So.much.purging. !!! I also need to get rid of foundations but … they were too pricey I just can’t get to throwing them! I rather keep them and just not use them lmao… such a hoarder! 😅😅😅 I gotta agree with you on the Maybelline master conceal concealer …in my opinion it sucks ! Lol it doesn’t cover anything and it creases and cakes up! I also agree it’s very runny :/ I also have that garner bb cream and it’s wonderful. Just that like you said the lightest shade is too dark for you as for me! I’m white as paper (exaggerating a bit) so the lightest shade makes me look very orange lol. I wish they would make lighter lighter lighter shades and I would so use it daily. It gives such wonderful coverage and looks beautiful on the skin.

    1. You’re funny! Keep them and not use them! I don’t live in a mansion so I need to make room! 😛
I was so disappointed by that Maybelline Master Conceal – not sure why everyone loves it.
Have you seen this from the Body Shop:
      http://www.thebodyshop-usa.com/makeup/face/adjusting-drops.aspx
They’re shade adjusting tints that you can mix with any foundation! I love this idea! Now you can shade adjust your too dark foundations.

      1. I don’t either!!! But I hate throwing expensive things away lol even the packaging!!!! Yesss, it’s such a weird concealer👎 I have ! Kathleen lights did a review on it .. I know she mentioned another one that was better I think she said the body shop one alters the formula. But I soo need to get my hands on one lol the majority of my foundations are too dark for me lol!

  9. Finally got time to read this post! Whoa, you got rid of SO many foundations and concealers…awesome! 😀

I’ve always wanted to try the Bobbi Brown corrector…good to know that it didn’t work that great for you!

I’ve heard so much about the Lise Watier Portfolio concealers, especially with people using it these days to highlight and contour…never realized how crazy light the green and lilac ones are, holy moly!

Also, I found it interesting how all of these foundations and concealers worked for you (except the ones where you specifically said was too dark/light), when a lot of them are varying shades!

    Liked by 1 person

    1. The Bobbi Brown corrector might work for you since you have drier skin than me, who knows! I tried so many ways to work with it but it just didn’t want to behave!
The Lise Watier Portfolio was one of those products I dismissed for ages because it looks kind of like Halloween makeup, doesn’t it? I thought it’d be some cheap quality stuff but it’s REALLY pigmented, kind of like stage makeup like Kryolan.
You make a good point – it IS amazing how different each one swatches but generally they match me. I think it’s because the formulas I like are typically quite forgiving since I prefer lighter coverage. I think if it was something like EL Double Wear, I’d have to have an exact match. I’d say in terms of good matches from these – the CoverGirl Outlast and the MAC Pro Longwear are both spot-on.

  10. Wow you had a lot of foundations and concealers! I’ve had my eye on that orange Skin79, too. I do like the MAC Studio Finish concealer for its coverage, though you’re right, it can be cakey. 😦 They also d/c the shade I used to use, so now I have to get a lighter shade (using up the darker one now and it can look orangey on me).
