Lip Product Purge of 2016

For someone who’s a self-professed NON-lipstick junkie… I seem to own a lot of lip products.  And we all know that lipsticks don’t have a long lifespan – really, one should be tossing lip products about 18 months after opening.  I’m guilty of keeping mine for MUCH longer than 18 months! (but let’s be reasonable here, common sense should prevail – if the lip product doesn’t have a funky smell or a weird texture, it’s probably ok).  All that said, I need to get rid of a whack of stuff that I hardly ever reach for – some have gone bad, and others are just taking up precious space:

I’m just going to do a rapid-fire purge on the lip products – there’s not much to say about each one since most of them are barely used, some not at all (for shame!)  The ones that I did use and like, I’ll make a note.

Lipsticks

lip_purge_2016_9
Mary Kay True Dimensions Lipstick in Wild About Pink – didn’t like this colour on me
Red Earth Sheer Envy Hydrating Sheer Lipstick in Tea Rose – this went bad so quickly, disappointingly
lip_purge_2016_10
Maybelline Super Stay 14 Hr in Ravishing Rouge 065 – got this for free and never worn, just swatched – too bold for me but a nice formula though
Elizabeth Arden Color Intrigue Effects Lipstick in Poppy Cream – gorgeous formula and colour, just outside of my comfort zone. I’ll sanitize this and pass onto a friend.
lip_purge_2016_11
Elizabeth Arden Color Intrigue Effects Lipstick in Wine Cream – bad colour on me
Mai Beauty Lipstick in Stella – received in a loot bag and never worn or swatched, it’s a peachy pink shade. Will be passing onto a friend so I am not swatching it here.
lip_purge_2016_6
• Vasanti Tinted Lip Balm in Cancun – great formula, just don’t wear this shade, I kept the shade Bahamas which is a muted rose colour
L’Oreal Colour Riche Caresse lipsticks in Silky Java and Blushing Sequin – this line is discontinued now.  I quite like the formula but these 2 shades aren’t my favourite. I’ve kept 2 shades of this formula: Sunset Angora and Cherry Tulle.
lip_purge_2016_7
Prestige Love & Kisses Lipstick in Kiss Me – lovely formula, just really old
Rimmel Moisture Renew Lipstick in Coral Queen – way too bright for me
lip_purge_2016_8
• Benefit Full Finish Lipstick in Lady’s Choice (Sephora 100pt perk) – I really like this lipstick but it’s quite old now. Too bad this formula is now discontinued – I’d always planned on getting the full size of this eventually.

Lipglosses

My taste in lip products have changed over time – I used to like lipgloss but now I’m not into anything too shiny. I don’t mind some sheen so lipbalms and lip oils are more to my liking nowadays.
lip_purge_2016_17
NYX Mega Shine Lip Gloss in 129 Beige – smells like cough syrup
Revlon Super Lustrous Lipgloss in 040 Nude Lustre – old but great formula
Revlon ColorBurst Lipgloss in Sizzle and Fire – too smeary for such bright shades (but that Fire really packs a punch!)
lip_purge_2016_18
Paula’s Choice Liquid Lipsticks in:
• Cherry Red
• Watermelon Pink
• Vintage Pink
I received 4 tubes as gwp, I’m keeping just 1 shade (Festive Rose). Nothing wrong with these except they’re not shades I’d wear – these are definitely not liquid lipsticks as per their name – they’re just a tinted non-sticky gloss.
lip_purge_2016_15
Maybelline Lip Elixir in Celestial Coral – don’t like the formula
Buxom Big & Healthy Lipstick in Shanghai – gone bad and unused! [randomly placed with the lipglosses by accident, and also unswatched, oops]
Vital Radiance Moisture Boosting Lip Shine in Sheer Spice – this is beyond OLD. Does anyone remember this brand? It was by Revlon and aimed toward the “mature” woman – unfortunately it flopped, but there were some standout products in the range.
lip_purge_2016_16
NYX Xtreme Lip Cream in Nude Peach Fuzz – gave me corpse lips
The Body Shop Hi-Shine Lip Treatment in 10 Perfectly Pink – ugly colour on me
Sephora Brilliant Shine Lip Gloss in Rosy Glow – free gwp from 2009!

Lipbalms

lip_purge_2016_3
Maybelline Baby Lips in:
• 15 Cherry Me
• 20 Grape Vine
• 25 Pink Punch
• 85 Oh! Orange!
• 95 Strike a Rose (half tempted to keep this one, the scent reminds me of a lip gloss I had as a child!)
lip_purge_2016_4
I did really like these with Cherry Me being my favourite of the lot, but they’ve expired. I can always repurchase if I miss them (well, except for the LE ones in the black tubes).
lip_purge_2016_5
I’ve kept only 2 Maybelline Baby Lips: 090 Plummy Yummy, and the Dr Rescue one I got recently in 60 Berry Soft.
lip_purge_2016_12
Revlon ColorBurst Lip Butter in:
• 010 Raspberry Pie (unused!)
• 015 Tutti Frutti
• 040 Red Velvet (also unused!)
• 050 Berry Smoothie
• 070 Cherry Tart
• 085 Sugar Plum
lip_purge_2016_13
I fully admit that I went overboard buying these in nearly every shade Revlon released, and these were often on sale for $3-4 each.
lip_purge_2016_14
I’m going to give the unused ones to my friends so I’m not going to swatch them. I’ve kept 5 shades: 010 Pink Truffle (probably my favourite), 027 Juicy Papaya, 035 Candy Apple, 063 Wild Watermelon, and 075 Lollipop.

Alas, a large portion of my eos stash have gone off!  I opened every one of my eos balms for a sniff test and noticed that a lot of them don’t close tightly – something wonky with the threads. What a terrible waste, really.  The orange one is fairly new but I’m tossing because it smells like medicine crushed up and mixed with earwax. These are the ones going bye-bye:
lip_purge_2016_20
• Medicated Tangerine (orange)
• Sweet Vanilla Nonsense (ivory)
• Watermelon Wonderland (red)
• Blueberry Potion (blue)
• Passion Fruit (purple)
• Barbados Heat / Wildberry (berry)
• Pomegranate Raspberry (plum)
• Aloha Hawaii (Strawberry Kiwi)
• Lemon Drop (yellow)
• Summer Fruit (deep pink)
• and a fake wannabe Bath & Body Works Liplicious in Apple
lip_purge_2016_23
I can’t say I won’t be buying any more eos lipbalms but I will certainly try my best to use up what I have! 😉  I only have 5 eos lipbalms left now.
lip_purge_2016_19
Kose PURE UV-CUT SPF15 Hyaluronic Acid lip balm – old and didn’t like the formula
Nuxe Rêve de miel lip balm – I know people love this but it’s just so waxy and didn’t hydrate my lips at all
Roc Enydrial Repairing Lip Care – this was recommended by my boss and I didn’t like the formula, felt like I was applying glue stick to my lips

50 lip products gone!

I’m down to a very manageable amount of lip products now.  Here’s a before and after of a few of my lipstick holders:

Do you have any of these lip products?  Are you in need of a makeup stash purge too? 😉

  1. Am I in need of one? Absolutely. Will I? Over my cold, dead body!! Bury me with my 300+ lipsticks, so I may have them in the afterlife…

Great job purging, though. I like how you can give so many of these away. =) But I have to admit, I’m so distracted! What is that white and yellow lipstick with the cute girl in a headscarf/bonnet? It’s super cute!

  2. I’m so surprised to see that you like dark lip colors or you tend to go straight to balms … You are not a “nude” lip kinda girl. (I will never show my ridiculous collection !!! I would be judge) I’m also guilty at keeping my lipsticks for more than 2 years 😦

    1. I do have some nudes but I much prefer MLBB type of shades. I also like tints of colour – like a hint of red with a sheer red balm. 🙂 I don’t think NUDE nudes suit me – I’ve tried, trust me! I’d love to see your collection and possibly ridicule you…. 😆

  3. I thought I had a lot of lip products lol. I definitely want to try the Vasanti Tinted Lip Balm, one of my close friend was raving about it. I’m also obsessed with the Baby Lips lip balm. I love how they give your lips a different shade of color and it smells good too!

    1. The Vasanti Tinted Lip Balms are fantastic – so comfy to wear. I LOVE the smell of the Baby Lips – I know some people say they smell weird but I think they smell like candy and I love they’re all different scents to match the colours.

    1. I know, it’s so wasteful to get rid of new items. That’s why I’m going to give them to my friends. I mean, I could keep them and try to get around to using them, but if they’ve been in my collection for over a year and STILL unused, there’s something wrong with that picture, right?
Hehe yes, I love looking at makeup stashes too. Voyeurism! 😛

  4. Nice! I actually really like the Medicated Tangerine balm from EOS because it works really well and it tingles 🙂 But the smell does suck. I feel inspired to go through my lipsticks too, though, I don’t use most of them EVER.

  5. Thank you for putting up these posts as a reminder that some of us (ahem, me) need to start or continue on with purging! I’m also sadly going to have to toss out a portion of my beloved EOS collection.

  6. Look at you go with 50 items for just lip products…and I still have to read the trash post you did yesterday too! The Body Shop Perfectly Pink is a really pretty shade.

The Revlon Colourburst lip gloss in Fire is CRAZY pigmented! Holy. The EOS lipbalms have always been too drying for me, which makes me sad because the scents sound delicious and they’re so cute!

Good to know you didn’t like the Nuxe lip balm. I keep meaning to try it out because it has so many rave reviews, but I don’t enjoy each textured balms either.

    1. The Nuxe is SO waxy – ugh. I really tried to make it work but it wasn’t meant to be.
The eos balms are mainly what I like to use to prep my lips in the morning before I put on lipstick or tinted lip balms. They’re not hydrating enough on their own. The newer ones with the white swirl on the packaging are much better – more hydrating:

  7. Excellent purge! I was never a fan of the Babylips or the EOS balms, once I purchased them I thought they were way more hyped up then they deserved! I ended up hardly using mine before I tossed them out.

    Liked by 1 person

    1. I think they serve a specific purpose. The eos for me is my lip prep in the mornings and the Baby Lips are perfect for a hint of colour on casual days – I can apply without a mirror.
What are your favourite lip balms?

      Liked by 1 person

      1. I’m glad they work for you! Thats a good idea, I may have to dabble in one of the colored baby lips (I only used the clear.)My favorite lip balms are Nivea Milk and Honey and Malin + Goetz Mojito Lipbalm. The Malin and Goetz I got in an Ipsy bag ages ago, and I ended up repurchasing because I love it so much! Hopefully they never discontinue it haha.

  8. Your nickname should be Sephora cause you got a store’s worth of makeup! lol I tend to keep my makeup way too long and I need to change them out more often. I can see myself being one of those women who sticks to the same makeup for years and not giving a damn what anyone thinks. lol

    1. Hahaha I just get caught up buying all the colours within a formula if I end up really liking the formula. I do tend to stick to the safe shades for everyday so I REALLY don’t need some of the crazy colours, as evident by this purge!

  9. You are really on a role! I totally agree with you that the 18 month rule it there to be broken. Some lippies go off way before that and others last forever. I am also a great fan of sanitizing them with some alcohol once in a while to make them last longer.
Great shades in there, I remember the hype around the revlon lip butters (and love my berry smoothie).

    1. Yes, I need to sanitize my current stash to help extend their lives longer! It’ll be a weekend activity…
The shade Berry Smoothie was my most used shade of the ones I’ve tossing, however, the shimmer was bothering me.

      Liked by 1 person

      1. I know what you mean: I used to love Berry Smoothie, but it somehow has become to shimmery recently. Maybe because of all of the new (semi) matte finishes we are getting used to.

  10. I haaaateeee purging lip products!!! It’s so hard to say goodbye lol!!😭 but sometimes it’s necessary. I am thankfully 😛 not in need of any lip purging but I did do it a while back. When I got my new vanity I purged almost every old lipstick, glosses etc. I knew I wasn’t gonna use anymore or it simply went bad. Thankfully they weren’t expensive or important lip products lol so it wasn’t as hard!

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Yeah there are some that I’m scratching my head as to WHY I even bought them… then I remembered that they were probably really inexpensive or on sale. I’m a sucker for stuff on sale / clearance. 😛 Lip stuff just goes bad so quickly compared to everything else though. What a pity!

      Liked by 1 person

      1. I never realized that before!! I think I’ve only had maybe one or two lip products go bad ever lol! OR maybe I have no idea when they’ve gone bad! 😛 I think we all have lip products that we are like uhhhh why did I buy you!? I have a few myself and they were pricey and I know myself I’m never ever going to wear that shade, why did I buy it.. I HAVE NO IDEA!

        Liked by 1 person

  11. I actually laughed out loud at your medicine/earwax description!
I too went a little nuts buying the revlon lip butters. And I really did love them for a time but then I just kind of stopped loving them quite as much. Weird how that happens.
I’ve been contemplating trying the Nuxe balm for a while now so I’m glad to know that maybe it isn’t really worth my time.
How totally satisfying is that to be down 50 products? It gives me a little bit of anxiety thinking about throwing out that many products at once but it’s gratifying to “purge vicariously “!

    Liked by 1 person

    1. That eos is really gross though. I feel bad because my friend brought it back for me specifically because she knew I had all the other colours but not that one. Ick!
Some people seem to love the Nuxe balm – it’s just so WAXY to me! Doesn’t do it for me unfortunately but maybe I’m weird.
And yes, it was quite liberation to get rid of these… the process is a bit challenging but the aftermath is good. 🙂

  12. I can’t believe I missed this post. That is some serious purging – you did so well! Lipsticks are hard for me to purge (as I love them so) unless they’ve gone off (you know, funky texture/smell). I hate that some go off so quickly, these days! I just had my MAC O lippie go off and I’ve had it for probably 10 yrs. Nowadays, I’ve had newer NARS lipsticks go off after 2 yrs, bleah!

I really should purge my lipsticks, too, but…I don’t wanna! 😀
