LUSH The Sacred Truth Fresh Face Mask

I recently posted my newbie LUSH haul and many of you asked for a review of the Sacred Truth Mask so here it is:
Lush_sacred_truth_2
The LUSH The Sacred Truth Fresh Face Mask is only available in store, not online, and costs $7.95 for 60g. This product requires refrigeration due to the fresh, natural ingredients.

This mask is aimed at “dry and mature skin” of which my skin is neither. However, I scanned the ingredient list and it contained things that I felt would be good for me: honey (first ingredient), glycerin, papaya, yogurt, shea butter.  Also, due to the IPL treatments I’ve been doing, my skin has been slightly drier / tighter feeling, and this mask helps to relief that.

Honey , Glycerine , Kaolin , Talc , Fresh Papaya (Carica papaya) , Soya Yoghurt (Glycine soja) , Bentonite Gel , Organic Evening Primrose Oil (Oenothera Biennis) , Lanolin , Fair Trade Shea Butter (Butyrospermum parkii) , Extra Virgin Coconut Oil (Cocos nucifera) , Fresh Organic Free Range Eggs , Fragrance , Ylang Ylang Oil (Cananga odorata) , Rose Absolute (Rosa damascena) , Lavender Oil (Lavandula augustifolia) , Rosewood Oil (Aniba rosaeordora) , Fresh Wheatgrass (Triticum Aestivum Vulgare) , Organic Ginseng Root Powder (Panax Ginseng) , Green Tea Powder (Camelia sinensis) , Ginkgo Leaf Powder (Ginkgo biloba) , Bee Pollen , *Benzyl Benzoate , *Citronellol , *Farnesol , *Geraniol , *Limonene , *Linalool . *Occurs naturally in essential oils

The mask has a very gooey / sticky consistency which makes sense given the high honey content. There are also little bits of papaya in the mask that I try to strategically place on my face (middle of forehead, on the tip of my nose; “Hey hun, is there something on my face?). I’m going to admit something here: Curiosity overcame me and I tasted this face mask (for science!) and it does taste slightly sweet, but mostly soapy 😛 (don’t try this at home, kids!)

I use about 2 tbsp worth of product to cover my face – there’s no tingling or tightening sensation – the instructions state to leave it on for 10 minutes and not to let the mask dry completely.  I’m not sure why I shouldn’t leave the mask to dry completely – I suppose LUSH worries that it might be difficult to rinse off? I’ve let the mask dry completely, and my face hasn’t fallen off.  I left it on my face for 30 minutes one time while I was watching A Few Good Men on tv – I was waiting for the “YOU CAN’T HANDLE THE TRUTH” scene… 😛

Immediately after rinsing the mask off, my skin feels very supple and soft.  The mask rinses pretty cleanly but it does leave a balmy feel on the skin – almost like beeswax, I suspect it’s the lanolin – but it’s not a greasy film.  I apply my normal face cream and call it a night (I skip the serum). In the morning, my skin still looks and feels very hydrated.

Another plus is that this product needs to be refrigerated so every time I used this mask, it had a nice cooling sensation. A caution though, the mask is quite quite fragrant (ylang ylang, rose, lavender, rosewood) – when I apply this, the SO can smell it from another the room so if you’re sensitive to scents, I’d recommend staying away from this product. In fact, if you’re sensitive to scents, just stay away from LUSH altogether. 😉

My pot of mask was made on February 1st and expires tomorrow.  I’ve used this mask 5 times and will be doing my final mask tonight – yielding 6 uses out of the 60g pot. At a cost of $7.95, this works out to $1.33 per mask, which isn’t too bad when I consider that I pay $2 for those single-use sheet masks.  And this contains fresh natural ingredients made by hand! It should be noted that this product does contain eggs and is labelled as vegetarian. Depending on what type of vegetarianism one follows, this may or may not be acceptable.

Bonus: collect 5 LUSH pots with special labels to exchange for a FREE fresh face mask! From my LUSH haul, 3 of the items have the labels, so I need 2 more to get a free mask. 🙂

Pros:
• Leaves skin soft and supple
• Fresh natural ingredients
• Reasonably priced
• Cruelty-free

Cons:
• Very limited lifespan
• Only available at LUSH stores, not online
• Inclusion of ylang ylang, rose absolute, lavender and rosewood oil may irritate some skin

Stash worthiness: 8/10

Looks like I’ve become a LUSH mask convert. Have you tried this mask?  What is your favourite face mask?

      1. I bought a little jar of charity pot because the hand cream that they suggested to me left a greasy film on my hands that I was left standing there trying to work into my hands literally 20 minutes after she gave me a little pea size drop of it.

I love Charity Pot, just not for my hands in winter.

  1. Great detailed review. Moreover, I don’t mind strong smell and so, it is pretty much ok for me. I think J have mentioned earlier that it looks exactly like my DIY Avacado mask which my skin worships a lot. Lastly, have fun and a wonderful Sunday

      1. Avacado is one great product that could be taken in and out of the body. Well, nowadays, I substitute mashed Avacado as an alternative for a butter spread and Avacado mask into the skin and hence, it is serving as one versatile natural product

  2. I love the fresh face masks! The one I used was Love Lettuce which was perfect for my skin type. I know they have a short life span but I find this to be good as I will use it up instead of letting it sit there like I do with other masks haha.
This one seems interesting though, I might have to try it out.

    1. I looked into the Love Lettuce mask and it’s got good ingredients. The only caution I would say with that one is the crushed almond shells – if you’re just applying this as a mask, it’s fine, but if you’re scrubbing your face with it, the shells might be a bit abrasive.

  3. I have used almost all of the Lush fresh facemasks, and I think that my favourite would either be Catastrophic Cosmetics or Oatifix, both quit different compared to each other but super good. Oatifix is what I’m using at the moment because it’s great during the winter months to nourish and moisturise the skin.
I really liked the style of your review, very thorough and nicely written! 🙂

    1. I was eyeing that Oatifix one as my next one! I love oats for skincare.
Thanks so much for your kind words. I try to cover all the questions that I anticipate someone might want to know about a product. 🙂

  4. Thanks for the review! The scent sounds delicious, and it seemed to have really good results for your drier-than-usual skin. The only reservation I would personally have about buying this face mask is that it takes me FOREVER to get through face products, and having an expiration date might cause me to waste a lot of the product.

LOL that you tried to taste the face mask. I’ve recently been using a honey face mask from Fresh and I may or may not have tried to lick it to see it tasted like honey… 😛 glad I’m not the only one!

    1. I had to be REALLY disciplined to use this every other night from the day I got it. My SO was like, AGAIN with the mask? But it did come in handy for when we had the -30C weather. It’s a nice treat but normally I do a mask once a week no every other day so likely I wouldn’t be keeping this up continuously.
Well, did your face mask taste like honey? Inquiring minds want to know! 😉

  6. I would like to try this but with the honey ingredient I guess I’ll pass.. I was not allergic to honey before but since I’ve had a pimple outbreak (a year ago) my skin is very sensitive to anything.. I’ve tried honey once and it for sure irritated my skin..🙁 this mask sounds amazing though..

    1. Aw too bad about the honey! But it’s very good that you know what your skin cannot tolerate. This is the basic understanding everyone needs to have with their skin. I know that a lot of people like the LUSH mask, Mask of Magnaminty, but I know that my skin would react to the peppermint that it contains, so I’ll be passing on that one.
Do you use face masks regularly? If so, what do you use?

      1. I used to love honey and powdered rice for my (DIY) face scrub but I don’t know what happened when all of the sudden I became sensitive to it. Now, I’ve been using the Glamglow youthmud since last year. This def. helped my “sparkles” pimples from coming back. I am scared to try new products coz im just super sensitive. I have a few face masks that I own right now and one is from Sephora.. Im sure you’ve heard about this mask.. But Im worried that It might irritate my skin too.

          1. it looks scary too when I first bought it but the reviews are amazing. I just bought the sample size in case it won’t work but I’ve been using them ever since. Infact, I just use it on specific areas where I can see a pimple coming out and leave it overnight and it works. LOL 🙂 but yes! I really wish this Sephora will work.. (fingers crossed) 🙂

  7. Oh nice review! I haven’t tried this one yet but it has moved top of the list after reading this. I only ever pick them up when I return five jars, such a great deal.
I tend to split these with my mom or a friend because of the limited shelf life. They really should just make the jars half the size and half the price.

  8. I used to only buy Lush masks and then I stop !!! (For no real reason other than I don’t tend to buy their products anymore ! (Very strange…) The fact is that I used to love their fresh masks and now I really want to try this one after I used up my stash 😀 Great review !
Suited for dry and mature skin : It’s for me 😉

  9. Haha, I probably would have tasted it too, but I won’t now that I know it tastes like soap 😛 It does sound like a nice mask, and I don’t mind a lot of fragrance, but 3 weeks is so short. I guess it makes sense though… 2 masks a week is pretty reasonable.

    1. Yes lot of people who may have oily or combo skin can still suffer from dehydrated skin. I think this mask would be really nice for any skin type! I’m looking forward to trying more LUSH masks. 🙂
