I’ve been wanting to try Surratt Beauty ever since I learned about the Relevée Lash Curler, way before the brand became available in Canada. I toyed with paying the hefty prices to purchase it online. I was then so annoyed that when the brand did become available at Sephora, and it was constantly sold out! Finally I got a notification in January to advise that the curler was back in stock so I decided not to wait for the VIB sale in April to buy some Surratt items:
These were purchased in my Sephora haul and I’ve been testing them for the past month – here are my thoughts.
All the Surratt Beauty items are made in Japan, even the lash curler and palette case. Every item is packaged exquisitely – who has ever seen an eyelash curler with its own dust bag?!
Relevée Lash Curler – $27
I’ll start off with the best item. 
This lash curler has officially surpassed my previous HG lash curlers, the Shiseido and MAQuillAGE Eyelash Curlers. The curvature of the Surratt is perfection for my eye shape, and it creates a very soft, natural looking curl to the lashes. The Shiseido / MAQuillAGE can occasionally create a sharp “L” shaped curl.
I also love the handles of the Surratt – they’re double coiled so it’s more comfortable to hold. It also comes with a rubber pad refill. I’ll devote an entry to compare the Surratt against other lash curlers in more detail. 10/10
Artistique Custom Palette Case Petite – $18
Although the man behind Surratt Beauty (Troy Surratt) is a NYC-based makeup artist, his philosophy and esthetics are very much based on Japanese ones. The modular and simplistic packaging is similar to that of Shu Uemura or ADDICTION. However, I find this case to be lacking a couple of features. There’s no mechanism to hold the refill pans – no adhesive or magnets and they don’t interlock into place. The pans will just fall right out if I turn the palette upside down. As a fix, I’ll be putting double-sided tape on the bottoms of my pans to prevent them from falling out.
Also, the case didn’t feel that premium in quality, compared to other custom palettes available on the market like Shu Uemura, MAC or even Inglot. I wouldn’t repurchase the case, and if I buy more Surratt pans, I’ll just add a magnet to the base and stick them into my z-palette. The Petite Case can hold 2 eye shadows + 1 blush like I’ve created here, or 4 eye shadows, or 2 blushes. Surratt also offers the Grande size ($24) which can fit 6 eye shadows, or 3 blushes, or 2 eye shadows + 2 blushes, or 4 eye shadows + 1 blush.
I do like that the case includes a mirror and how compact it is – it measures 6cm x 7cm x 1.5cm. Here’s what the Surratt palette looks like next to a MAC Pro Palette 4-pan. I like how there’s no wasted space inside the Surratt palette, whereas MAC could do with moving those pans a little closer together to make the palette slightly more compact. Lastly, the Surratt case is also really pretty, with a subtle holographic looking shimmer that shifts from purple to green in certain angles. 6/10
Artistique Eyeshadow in Marron and Fee Dragee – $22 for 1.7g each
These eye shadow pans are compact! But they contain more product than a MAC single (1.7g vs 1.5g). The packaging is minimalistic, with the pans covered by a sliding plastic cover. They’re not really meant to be housed in these covers – they’re meant to be put into the custom compact case. Oddly, the packaging of the 2 eye shadows I got are different from each other – the box for Fee Dragree has a shimmery finish and black text whereas Marron is plain with white text. *scratches head*
The quality of these powders are superb, there’s no doubt they’re fine milled and blendable. They’re made using a “slurry process” as described by Mr. Surratt himself in this video – whereby the products are pour into the pans and the liquid evaporates. This creates a very creamy and smooth texture. These apply well onto the lids but I found they tend to blend away to nothing quite easily. They’re also not the most pigmented shadows, which again, I feel is in keeping with the Japanese esthetics – I find that Japanese brands typically offer more sheer formulas. I experienced some fading by around the 7 hr mark. In looking at the colour selection – perhaps I just own too many eye shadows – the only other shade tempting me is Patine, a taupe. 7/10
Artistique Blush in La Vie En Rose – $35 for 6g
This was another star product. This blush almost blends itself, it’s SO smooth and silky. It leaves no harsh edges and looks like a cream product on the skin. This lasted impressively well on the cheeks (10+ hrs).
I also love the shade I chose – a neutral rose that goes with lots of eye looks. I’ve got my eye on Se Pomponner (bright pink), Rougeur (berry red) and Grisaille (taupe) next! 9/10
Here are the swatches of the 3 shades:
Marron is a plummy brown, Fee Dragee is a deep muted purple. They pair together really well.
Bottom line: Relevée Lash Curler is the best purchase of 2016 so far! I’m getting a back-up in the VIB sale. The blush is amazing and I’ll be trying other colours. The eye shadows are also beautiful but I wouldn’t rush out to purchase more right away. Skip the case altogether. Surratt Beauty is available exclusively at Sephora in Canada.

You mentioned before that you like the Shu Uemura lash curler, am I remembering correctly? That curler is much more curved compared to the Surratt / Shiseido ones. I’m thinking maybe the curved shape works better for your eye shape? I gave my Shu Uemura curler away but maybe I need to get it again so I can do a side by side comparison for the blog.

I do like the Shu Uemura curler – not so much for the curl shape, but because it doesn’t pinch my lids like most the other ones that I’ve tried (I’m looking at you Tweezerman rose gold pinchy curler). I want a softer curl so this one seems like a good one to try, and the price is comparable to the Shu.

Did you get these in stores, or online? Have been dying to try Surratt, but I’m a tactile person and want to swatch everything before I purchase, haha.
How disappointing that the palette isn’t magnetic, or some type of mechanism that makes sure the pans stay in place. That’s such a common feature in make-your-own palettes today, and you would think a high end ish brand would offer that.
La Vie en Rose is a gorgeous shade! Great choices!

I bought these online but I did have a chance to play around with them in store to choose the shades I wanted. I’ve been doing my Sephora orders online since I get ebates back.
I read somewhere that you can apparently peel back the sticker at the base of the pans to stick them down? But that means 1) the shade name from the pan disappears 2) the pans are permanently stuck into place? That’s weird.
I’m wearing La Vie en Rose today and I LOVE it. Seriously, the colour blends itself.

Wow. That photo of the eyelash curler is AMAZING! Gorgeous. I haven’t purchase Surrat yet, and I am so surprised that the pans just sit in the palette. No magnet, no clips, nothing. That seems in very poor taste. Great review! I’ll have to check them out in the Times Square Sephora. I know I’ve seen it sold there.

Definitely test out the lash curler. It’s the pinnacle of lash curlers on the market! Although, I’ve not tried the Chanel black one that everyone was so crazy about… I’m not sure if it would honestly be better than this one. Yeah the palette was disappointing but there are so many other palette options out there, don’t need to get theirs.

The eye shadows are really nice, but I just don’t feel like they’re out of this world fantastic, ya know? The blush though – it’s a different beast compared to Illamasqua (which can tend to kick up some powder) – it’s really smooth and feels like a cream product almost. You could get Peanut to apply this to your face and you’d look polished, I swear! 😛

I’ll have you know it’s been only 3.5 months! 😛 I have this thing where if I’m already using a product (in this case, my Shiseido curler), I’ll just keep using it instead of trying other stuff. Very bad habit! I’m dreaming of an incredibly organized and accessible stash so I can use things up more easily. Ahhhh.
The blush sounds amazing! Better than Illa?? Sigh. Onto my Sephora wishlist!
I’m also dreading the day Peanut gets into my makeup and tries to eat a lipstick or draw with it.

Oh my gosh! When I bought my first Inglot eyeshadow in Manhattan it took me almost an hour to pick and choose the shades that I want.. But I ended up with only two shades..hahahha I use them once in a while coz I don’t want to ruin it.. Hehe you’re lucky you have a store close by..

I just counted and I have 11 Inglot eye shadows. I picked them up at 3 different places: Chicago, Montreal, and Toronto. 😛 I’m sure collectively it took me a while to choose too. I did do a lot of online research and wrote down the shades I was most interested in and then narrowed them down once I swatched them in person. I want to try Inglot blushes and foundations next.

Great color choices!!!! 😊sucks that the eyeshadows aren’t that pigmented by seeing them online and stuff I thought they were gonna be intensely pigmented, however that blush looks great! Bummer about the packaging and the case you got. I mean why doesn’t it have any magnet to attract the shadows .. super weird lol.

Yeah I think the swatches online must be over a few passes, because they’re not insanely pigmented on first pass. I read a few reviews online and they also mention how the eye shadows aren’t that pigmented. They do blend really nicely though – very creamy.

Well that’s good. I guess I wouldn’t mind picking up a few very light transition shades that way they blend well and aren’t so noticeable 😄 the lash curler looks insanely nice. I don’t use curlers but if I did I think I’d get this one lol! I’ve just been always afraid of pinching myself !!
ever since I was little I would stare at my mom like ? Why is she pinching her eye lmao. I’m happy that I don’t need to curl them cause they have a natural curl … hope it lasts forever 😛

If you’re still curious about the eye shadows, just get one to begin with to see if you like the texture. I think our North American sensibility when it comes to makeup textures and pigmentation might cloud our frame of reference. But the blush – YES, for sure. I can’t wait to get more of those.

I haven’t tried Surratt beauty yet. I haven’t even seen it in my Sephora over here! Although to be fair, it’s been a little while since I’ve been. Surratt looks pretty pricey but that lash curler looks pretty heavy duty! I would probably purchase that.

It’s pretty new at Sephora and not ALL Sephora stores carry the brand. It’s online for sure. I’ve been wanting that lash curler forever and I’m SO happy it lives up to my expectations!

Yes if you’re in the market for a lash curler, definitely consider the Surratt. And it’s really not that terribly pricey either. It’s miles above the cult favourite Shu Uermura curler for me.

I love the compact nature of the palette, but so strange there is no mechanism to hold the pans in place. A little silly if you ask me. Lovely colors though!

I’d call these a satin finish – they don’t have obvious shimmer but they’re not matte. I do normally gravitate toward taupes but I decided to go for something slightly different!
