This is the second part of a three part series, to follow my journey of transitioning from antiperspirants to deodorants. My first attempt with deodorants was with Consonant Skincare Dealkalizing Deodorant, which wasn’t too successful. I made the switched to the Saje Peaceful Warrior Deodorant and have been using it for the past month:
Saje is a Canadian wellness brand that I’ve recently discovered – I reviewed their aromaBreeze nebulizer not long ago – they have some great gems at very reasonable prices. This product is available at their stores or online, at $12.95 for 100ml.
Saje claims this product is:
One of the most effective, all-natural deodorants available today, easy-to-use deodorant spray absorbs easily and begins working instantly. The active ingredient, liquid mineral salts, fights unwanted smells by neutralizing odour-causing bacteria rather than just merely masking it.
Key features:
• All-natural ingredients
• Non-sticky
• Doesn’t clog pores
• Free of harsh chemicals
• Doesn’t stain clothes
I’d say these claims all check out! I do really like this. Even though this is a liquid deodorant, it dried down quickly and didn’t leave my armpits wet or sticky. I did notice that in the beginning, this deodorant did make my armpits itchy, but that ceased by two weeks of using it – not sure any specific ingredient contributed to the itching. It’s impossible to get the full ingredient list in one frame so here it is:
potassium alum (liquid mineral salts); essential oils of cymbopogon martini (palmarosa), aniba rosaeodora (rosewood), santalum album (sandalwood), lavandua angustifolia (lavender), citrus aurantifolia (lime), pogostemon cablin (patchouli), foeniculum vulgare dulce (fennel) and vetivera zizanoides (vetiver)
The packaging is quite nice, the bottle is made of aluminum – and as with all other Saje mists that I’ve tried, this one delivers a really fine, even mist. The only weird thing is that the nozzle seems to leak a little, and when I unscrewed the top, the paint from the bottle seems to be peeling off. 😕
The scent is just ok to me – it’s a bit too musky for my liking but thankfully the smell doesn’t linger too long. Saje sells 2 other scents of spray deodorants (Floral, and Exotic) and I suspect Peaceful Warrior is really meant for men:
Our Peaceful Warrior scent formula is a rich, earthy blend of rosewood, sandalwood, lime, lavender, palmarosa, patchouli, fennel and vetiver for a masculine musk that exudes peace and strength.
I sniffed all 3 scents and I preferred the Peaceful Warrior best (I’m still not a HUGE fan of either sandalwood or patchouli though) so who cares if it’s a masculine scent! 😛
Performance-wise, I’d say this Saje deodorant works better for me compared to the Consonant one. I did still experience some BO (maybe about 25% of the time), but I didn’t notice myself feeling particularly wet in my armpit area. Some days I did sweat like a mofo (lots of walking or whatnot) and when I perform my armpit / clothing sniff test at home, I don’t stink at all and neither does my clothes. Shocker! 😮 This could be in part to my body getting more used to deodorants, and perhaps partly due to a more effective formula of the Saje deodorant.
Overall, I feel like I’m making progress… inching toward BO- and aluminum salt- free existence. 😛 I’m still currently rotating between antiperspirant (once every third day) and deodorant. I’ll be testing out the Lavanila The Healthy Deodorant in Vanilla Grapefruit scent next. And then possibly, in the interest of providing a fair test, I will circle back to the Consonant Skincare Dealkalizing Deodorant for another couple of weeks, just to make sure that my body wasn’t just getting acclimated to deodorants when I was trying that out.
Thanks for all your encouragement in my last post to continue with transitioning from antiperspirant to deodorant! I’ll be updating my journey in another month. 🙂 Have you tried Saje or other liquid deodorants, what are your thoughts on them?
I haven’t tried any of these ones – but I’d like to test out the consonant one and the Saje one to see if either one will work for me.
Glad to hear that this one is working better for you. The true test will be if you completely stop the anti-perspirant and see how your body reacts.

I’ve read nothing but raves on the Consonant one so I’ll definitely give it another whirl. I’m going to wean myself off antiperspirants by end of April – that’s my goal anyway!

Ooh, you made it through TWO weeks of itchy underarms! But it does sound like it works pretty well. I generally don’t like roll-on deodorants, which I guess are the closest thing to a liquid deodorant that I’ve used…but the ones I tried were goopy. I currently use Weleda’s spray as my non-aluminum deodorant, though it’s such a fine mist that it doesn’t feel like using liquid. I’ll have to give the Saje a try sometime. Nice review!

I was tempted to give up after a few days of the itchy armpits! I applied lotion to my underarms to help calm them – maybe the mineral salts dried them out, I don’t know.
I’ve actually not used spray deodorants before this – only solids, roll ons or the crystals. I don’t mind either way but as long as it doesn’t leave my armpits wet and sticky, I’m ok with it. Saje has impressed me with some of their skin stuff too – I’m going to do a review on their facial oil soon.

Wow, you’re dedicated. I think I’d chuck it if it made me itchy for a day or two! 😀 But it’s cool that it stopped itching after a while.

Def sounds a lot better. I tried one from the Honest Company recently and it’s similar. BO maybe 25% of the time, but also with the itching! I don’t think it’s as much an ingredient issue as it is a sensitive underarm issue (at least for me). My underarms are used to getting the treatment with moisturizing cream deodorants and when you take that away and replace it with a liquid spray they go back to their natural state of WTF, lol. I heared Tweet Tweet Meow has great products, but their shipping to CA is a bit pricey ($25). Best of luck as you continue your journey! I’m most excited to hear about the La Vanilla one.

You’ve gotten me curious about the Honest Company now. Did you ever look up the drama with the sunscreen? Crazy stuff.
I think you’re right about the sensitive skin and perhaps the deodorant was very drying on the skin. I applied lotion when they were itchy and that seemed to calm them.
Never heard of Tweet Tweet Meow! But ugh, why so much for shipping – those crooks! Yeah I’m excited to try the Lavanila! I hope it’ll be like the Goldie Locks syndrome – the last one will be perfect! 😉

Hey, one more step towards success! Sounds like this works quite well for you as a deodorant (for the most part), if you were sweating profusely and still couldn’t smell any BO on your clothes.
Fingers crossed for the La Vanilla deodorant!

Yes for sure, that was the day I realized that a DEODORANT can work! I was quite sweaty and NO stinky! 😀

It’s nice to not be stinky (obviously), but it’s not the greatest feeling to be wet in your armpit area!

Great post. I always love to wear deodorants.

I’m not sure I could make it as long as you have without using antiperspirant!!!
It’s good that this worked out better for you than that first one, but I do agree, it could have been because you had just started to ween off the anti. A second try may change your mind on it!

I did find the Consonant solid was a bit crumbly and felt wet on my skin for a long time – those properties won’t change but hopefully I won’t STINK all the time!
I’m quite concerned about the hot summer months coming up, to be honest. I’ll likely come crawling back to antiperspirants come June / July…

Glade you liked this! This was the product I was interested in getting your review for 🙂

I love the tagline Peaceful Warrior and glad this seemed to be working.. I am just using Dove Skin Renew and I love how it’s non-sticky and doesn’t stain my clothes too.. They keep this pits dry all day.. But I guess it depends on the body though.. Maybe to some it’s not gonna work! 😁

For sure, it does depend on body chemistry. Kind of like perfumes too. And the only way I can tell is if I try something for a while. I don’t mind, it’s a little bit of an experiment, hehe.

Agree! If you’re having trouble finding the perfect deo/antiperspirant.. I have a hard time finding the right perfume..😕

What an interesting post! I can’t wait to hear how things turn out in the end! It’s funny, I always thought antiperspirant and deodorant were the same thing 😵

I did too when I first started wearing them and then I started to learn more about it. Here’s a good overview:
http://www.healthynomics.com/2010/06/deodorant-vs-antiperspirant-whats-the-difference/
Key ingredient difference: antiperspirants contain aluminum which is controversial. I don’t buy the link to Alzheimer’s. But at the very least, intuitively, it’s probably best to not block up our pores to prevent us from sweating…

Thanks, I’ll have a read!

Interesting! I’d love to be able to go aluminum-free but I’m just not sure I can do it. The fact that this doesn’t give you BO gives me hope!

Yes, I didn’t think I could continue after the other experience but I’m glad I pushed on through. I was honestly really shocked after I had been sweating and wasn’t stinky afterward!

O no… you stash issues are expanding… 😛

Haha, nah, deodorants are consumables. If I don’t end up using them up I’ll toss them.

I’m still using and loving this stuff, but I won’t buy Peaceful Warrior again. I agree with you…a little too musky. I do love “Floral” though!

I didn’t love Floral at the time but I think I will have to smell it again. Thanks for the rec on this one! What other Sage stuff have you tried that you’d recommend? I recently started using their facial oil and I love it!

Ok – I have some allergy relief roll-on. I’m not sure if it works, but it sure smells good. Have the nebulizer. Love that. The Jasmine Exotic Mist smells heavenly. I spritz it on before bed. Really like the Coconut Kiss Body Scrub and Body Butter – they are AMAZING, along with the Saje Herbal Balm for lashes and nails. Ok – I put that balm on my lashes and I swear, they are growing back in (they all fell out after using the Rimmel Lash Accelerator mascara. Sigh).

Oh I’ve been eyeing that herbal balm! I’m going to pick that up next time I’m there then! And omg that sucks the lash ACCELERATOR mascara caused your lashes to fall out – what the actual heck!
I’m currently using the Jasmine Exotic Mist – I agree, I LOVE that stuff. I’m almost out.

YESSSS! Get the balm! I have read that these lash growth products cause your lashes to fall out once you stop using them. I don’t know if that’s true, but if it does, it sucks!

I’m anxious to read about Lavanila !!! I could never transition to deodorant, I would be a sweat mess 😀

You never know! I thought like you did too. I’m glad I tried it… even through the sweatiness. Just as long as I don’t STINK, that’s what I care about!

I’m sure I would stink … As you know my right armpit is SUPER sweaty 😀

Oh this sounds nice, though I agree with you I am a little unsure about the scent. The Lavanila one sounds much more like me, can’t wait to hear what you think on that one.
I have been using natural deodorants for a while and found it can take a while for your body to adjust. I love the Dr. Organic ones, but I am not sure you can get those over there.

I’m going to try the Lavanila one tomorrow – I can’t wait!
I just looked up the Dr. Organic and it seems to be only available online for me… I’ll keep and eye out for it at Health food shops. Thanks for the rec! 🙂

Nice, do let me know how you get on with that. On the lookout for a new deodorant to try.

That’s great to hear !!!!!! I think I need to purchase this asap! Since the lavanila or however you spell it didn’t work out for me probably this one will! And it’s not expensive yay lol! I do want to note though supposedly my boyfriend claims the Lavanila one works for him? So weird .. oh well at least it won’t go to waste lol. I also love that this one comes in spray form! Who doesn’t love masculine scents lol I’d probably pick the same scent as yours 🙂

I actually found it fascinating that there are a lot of deodorant options for men – I thought it’d be all antiperspirants for them. I think maybe it has something to do with the underarm hairs? My SO doesn’t even NEED to wear anything – he doesn’t stink!
Saje is such a good brand – I love that they aren’t that expensive either!

Perhaps ! :p maybe we should let our underarm hair grow maybe we won’t stink either ;P haha!!! I was telling my boyfriend about this product lol I told him I needed to get it since the other brand worked for him I wanted one too lol

Whatever works for me might not work for you, so it’s tough to say what might be universally good. I hope you will start testing out different products – trial and error is really the only way I’ve been able to narrow down what works, unfortunately!
