The BITE Beauty Agave Lip Mask in Natural has been on my wish list for a little while. I’ve heard many raves about it so finally picked it up during the Sephora VIB sale:
It retails for $36 CAD for 15g of product, and is made in Canada.
As you know this is the week of bad reviews so I’ll cut to the chase – I was less than impressed with this lip balm that everyone touts as a miracle product. I bought this with the intention of using it as a nighttime lip balm. I had been using the C.O. Bigelow Supreme 2X Lip Shine for ages but I was curious to try something different.
The tube has a safety seal that needs to be pierced with the cap prior to using, like old-fashioned toothpaste tubes.
The consistency of the product is a very thick balm but not sticky. It’s a yellow colour but applies essentially clear to the lips. There’s a slight sweet smell and taste but nothing readily identifiable – I guess it’s the agave nectar? I found it a bit waxy but it does seem to penetrate and provide hydration to the lips. However, I do not find it to provide a long lasting protective barrier like the C.O. Bigelow does. When I use this, by the morning, the product has disappeared off my lips, whereas the C.O. Bigelow is still fully coating my lips.
What really gave me pause was that I felt a bit of a tingly sensation on my lips when I used the BITE Agave lip mask, so I checked the ingredients:
Lanolin, Organic Ricinus Communis (Castor) Seed Oil, Organic Agave Tequilana (Blue Agave) Nectar, Olea Europaea (Olive) Oil Unsaponifiables, Organic Cera Alba (Beeswax), Flavor, Vanillin, Siraitia Grosvenori (Monk Fruit), Vanilla Tahitensis (Vanilla) Fruit Extract, Organic Copernicia Cerifera (Carnauba) Wax, Trans-Resveratrol, Vitis Vinefera (Grape) Oil, Tocopherol Acetate, Lonicera Caprifolium (Honeysuckle) Flower Extract, Lonicera Japonica (Honeysuckle) Flower Extract, Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil.
The only thing I can think of is perhaps the lanolin as it is not something I’ve used often before – I’ve learned that some people are sensitive to it. It wasn’t a full blown reaction, but it just felt itchy and uncomfortable instead of a soothing or feeling of relief when wearing this lip balm.
The final straw was after just THREE uses, the darn tube busted open at the bottom!!!
At first I thought I accidentally smeared the lip mask on my hand but then I realized it was oozing out the wrong end when I was squeezing it out to apply to my lips. The entire length of the end had split open. I’ve read that people advise to warm the tube up in the hands or with a hair dryer first before using. I ain’t got no time for that! I kept the tube at room temperature in my washroom cabinet – there shouldn’t be such a struggle to squeeze the product out. What a disappointment.
I’m bringing this back to Sephora. Not exchanging it, I’m just returning it and getting my money back (this is why I rushed to get this review up so I can go return this darn thing!) The formula is way too thick for this tube format, BITE Beauty should really consider putting this into a pot instead or improving the material used for the tube. For $36, I’d think they would use some premium grade, bust-proof plastic, c’mon!
Pros:
• Contains natural high quality ingredients
• Smells and tastes nice
• Emollient, non-sticky formula
Cons:
• Doesn’t last as long as I like
• Packaging fail
• Possible allergy to product
• Expensive
Stash Worthiness: 2/10
I know this is all personal preference because this product is well reviewed online, but it just wasn’t for me – I’ll stick to my $8 tube of C.O. Bigelow instead. Have you tried this, what did you think? What lip balm do you use at night before bed?
Oh that sucks! I hate it when tubes explode!

Oh no way did it split and give you a reaction. It’d be a real shame if it’s the lanolin. Have you ever tried Lanolips products? X

I’ve NOT tried Lanolips products and I’ve been soooo curious. I really hope it’s not the lanolin. I had used the Nib & Fab nipple balm which I think is lanolin based and I was fine. So who knows!

I really love Lanolips. You should test them one day see if you’re okay with them. X

Have you seen it in my VIB sale Haul ?!!! Nope … But I did get it too and the same thing happened and I got so upset I rushed to Sephora to get my money back.
I bought back a Rosebud Salve (7.50$) and quite frankly it’s as good 🙂
The girl at Sephora told me that a lot of people were transferring the product in a small container … Heu! for 36$ there is no way I would consider doing this 😏

Yeah I was wondering if bought this or not! I can`t believe this happened to you too! I guess we have STRONG fingers, squeezing the tube? 😛 And yeah right, I’m going to spend my time transferring this into a jar – good try! (I like your phrase “Heu” – is that a French thing!)
I’ve not tried the Rosebud Salve – I’ll have to look into that.

Um what? What a ripoff and how disappointing! I’m kind of glad my store was sold out of this during the sale now. I’ll check out your C.O Bigelow recommendation instead.

Yeah big bummer! I get irritated by packaging fails. I mean, how did this get pass quality control?! And I just read that Ingrid had the SAME issue so it’s not isolated or a rare occurrence, it seems!

WOOOW. For $36 it really should apply ITSELF to your lips, lol. But honestly, I can’t believe the package split. I’ve been curious about this for awhile now but really that’s just terrible workmanship for the money. I’ll have to look up the C.O. Bigelow one you use and see if it’s CF (that name always makes me laugh, lol. It reminds me of jigalow, hahahaha).

I know, right? It should whisper sweet nothings in my ear for that price!!! Haha I know Bigelow is funny. So is the name Dr Dennis Gross. GROSS. I guess they didn’t choose the name they were born with.
But yes, try the C.O. Bigelow one, I swear by that stuff and have gotten others hooked on it too!

I’ve been curious about this product since it came out since it gets rave reviews, but the negative reviews have stopped me from buying it so far. A lot of people say this is way too thick and sticky, so it’s good that was a non-issue for you.
The packaging busting open at the bottom seems to be a common problem – I thought they would have fixed this by now! Boo.
Definitely worth taking back to Sephora and getting your $36 back!

It’s thick and I wouldn’t call it sticky, it’s more of a waxy texture. There’s no “slip” in the sense that you can’t rub your lips back and force against each other like you would with other lip balms. Maybe that’s what people consider as sticky. I just don’t get why they can’t fix the tube issue… seems like an easy fix really!

Eww, frankly I’d find it hard to get over what it looks like!! Seems expensive and when the packaging isn’t up to scratch, I don’t blame you for returning!

It is pretty yucky looking… like automotive greasy or something. I think I was just won over by the fact that it was BITE beauty and the natural ingredients but it is really overpriced for what it is.

I’ve never used this but I’ve heard mixed reviews on it. I’ve never seen a tube bust open like! And warm with a blow dryer or between your hands?! Hahahaha… No. 🙂

Seriously, way to pass the responsibility onto the paying customer. Why don’t they just give us the raw ingredients and tell us to mix it ourselves!

Wow, that is seriously crappy packaging, and at that price?! No thanks. Good thing you’ll be able to return it! :O

BITE Beaut is usually really good, but this product fell short of expectations! I’m glad Sephora is really good generally with returns.

I have and I really like it, but I do remember thinking I got a defective tube because it felt rock hard in my hand. I just love that a little goes a long way with it, and the feeling of it when it’s applied and warm.

I’m glad it worked for you! It seems so great on paper and based on the reviews but I’m sensitive to something in the ingredient list… too bad!

I’ve tried all 3 versions of this lip mask and I liked it. I liked putting it on before bed and let it sink into my lips overnight. I didn’t have a reaction to it.
I love the rosebud salve and the minted rose lip balm (they’re by the same brand). Try the Jack Black lip balms sometime if you see them. I looooove them.

I’m so glad you like them! I did find it sinks into the skin, but my lips didn’t feel any better. And the itchy feeling wasn’t a good sign. I have had the Jack Black lip balm and it was just so so – it was just like vaseline? I’ll look for that Rosebud salve!

Awwwww Bad pkging! So far all lipbalms except the Chicken Poop & the Fresh Lip Serum break me out if worn to bed. The Bite one is one I could only wear during the day.

Chicken Poop is the name of the lip balm?! Bawahahaha! I need to find this so I can tell my SO that I’m applying Chicken Poop to my lips before I kiss him! 😆

$36 seems a bit extreme! Even more of a shame that the tube split, I hate when things like that happen.

I would have been willing to pay that price if the product was HG material… but sadly it wasn’t!

I bought mine for 26 bucks i think which i think is a bit over priced. However, I put this under my colourpop matte lipstick and they dont feel as uncomfortable. when i put it on over night , i do not wake up with spectacular lips so maybe i have to try it with a treatment. sorry to hear it was like a banana and spilt on you. lol

Haha yeah it was like a banana and split! Good one! I returned it and got my money back!

I’ve always hesitated when it comes to this product…and this just reminded me why! I’d heard about the packaging before. Lanolin is in my nipple cream (a breastfeeding thing) Lol TMI

We don’t get Bite beauty in the UK but i’ve heard so much about this lip mask! Shame it didn’t work out! The consistency looks really strange, very thick! Also how annoying that the tube burst!
LikeLiked by 1 person
I think the thickness is due to the lanolin, but they really should have factored that into the design of the packaging! It’s too bad.

Definitely! A pot would have worked so much better!

I received a sample of this from Jen, so I can’t say much about the packaging but I have heard about people having these types of experiences. As for the product itself, I liked it but it’s so not worth the money if you ask me. I didn’t feel it hydrated enough.

And yes, in my review, I stated that some many people are allergic to lanolin so that may be true for you.

I didn’t know that many people are allergic to lanolin – it wasn’t even in my radar as something to watch out for. Ah well. Lesson learned!

That is a tragedy! 😦 I think lanolin is definitely not for everyone. I have the Elizabeth Arden 8 Hour Cream (unscented version) which also has lanolin and I love it and us it as a lip and cuticle balm, but it definitely has a distinct aroma/texture and some people are also sensitive to lanolin as an ingredient. The burst packaging sucks though! I hope that doesn’t happen to my beloved Maple Agave Lip Mask.

Oh see, I hate the EA 8 hr cream – stinky stinky stuff! I didn’t react to that one but I just could not handle the smell of that right under my nose.
I really hope your Maple one doesn’t burst! Although, Ingrid’s did – her was the Maple one as well. 😦 Fingers crossed for you!

This is exactly what I use, although I only use it sometimes and not as a nightly balm, which means that the one tube I bought for $23 last spring still has 2/3 of it left. I don’t notice it making a huge difference when my lips are already doing okay, but if they’re chapped and peeling, then using the Bite Beauty mask overnight makes them look SO much better in the morning. That’s why I fell in love with it. I do find that it can get pretty stiff if your room temperature is below ~60F, though. I have the Smashed Agave version, so it’s a pretty red color instead of yellowy. At first I was disappointed that the normal version wasn’t in stock when I ordered, but now I’m pleased with the red color!
