Trash Stash: April 2016

It comes as no surprise that I’ve got a bunch of empties again this month.
trash201604_2
Fine, I’ll admit it, I’m literally eating this stuff. I just want lots and lots of empties each month! I especially enjoyed the gulping down that Mizon snail serum – YUMMY. 😆

Nizoral 2% ketoconazole shampoo – $17 for 120ml (drugstores)
Let’s get the sexiest stuff out of the way first. This is my go-to product to help relief dry flaky scalp in the winter months. It’s a bit stinky but it gets the job done. If you want to read more about this, I reviewed this in my winter scalp rescue post.
Stash worthiness: 10/10     Repurchase: Yes

Ion Curl Styling Creme – $8 for 177ml (Sally Beauty Supply)
This replaces my old favourite Biotera Curl Creme which was unfortunately discontinued. I do like that this product gives a piece-y look to my waves and helps to reduce frizz. The only challenge is that sometimes it can make my hair feel a bit crunchy – it’s a fine line between the perfect amount and whoa there 90’s gelled hair. 😛

L’Oreal Infallible Pro-Spray & Set – $17 for 100ml (drugstores)
I found this to be rather drying on my skin. It dehydrated my skin but didn’t necessarily keep me shine-free or help my foundation last longer. I do appreciate that this would be good for those with oilier skin types. The spray nozzle is a bit wonky – it’s a semi- fine mist, but deposits splotches of liquid in random areas. I decanted this into an empty Saje facial mist bottle – to my surprise, when I was pouring it out, I discovered that the product is actually milky white in colour! Did you know this? I guess that’s why L’Oreal packaged this in a black opaque bottle – I don’t think the average consumer would be really keen on spraying a liquid that looks like 1% milk onto their face…

Sukin Micellar Cleansing Water – $17 for 100ml (Winners and well.ca)
I found this at Winners and I’m in LOVE with it! So effective at removing any makeup residue (I use micellar waters as my 2nd step cleansing after I use cleansing oils – see this post on my evening cleansing routine). This leaves no soapy film on my skin at all. And it smells so nice, kind of like a soft marshmallow scent. This is a fairly new product from Sukin and I’ve not seen this sold anywhere else other than Winners. It’s also online from well.ca
Stash worthiness: 10/10     Repurchase: Yes

Consonant Skincare The Perfect Sunscreen SPF 30 – $45 for 50ml (Consonant stores and online)
I suspect this product isn’t actually finished since it doesn’t feel empty by weight, but the pump stopped pumping product out. That’s the issue with these vacuum type containers – you can’t really tell how much is left. Ah well. I do really like this mineral sunscreen – it’s slightly tinted to combat the typical issue with mineral sunscreen. To see how it swatches, see my review on it here.
Stash worthiness: 9/10     Repurchase: Yes

Mizon Snail Recovery Gel Cream – $8 for 45g (eBay)
I did a full review of this product and was just lukewarm about it. However, I do have it say that it was handy to have around when my skin freaked out from IPL Photorejuvenation procedure – it really helped to calm my skin down and didn’t further irritate it. I used this tube on and off for 5 months.
Stash worthiness: 7/10     Repurchase: Maybe

Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Cream – $34 for 50ml (Kiehl’s stores and online)
This was one of my Project Focus 10 items that I reviewed – this jar lasted me roughly 4 months which is longer than I thought it would.

My Melody 3D Sheet Mask Whitening (pink) (sasa.com)
I accidentally ripped the chin portion of this 3D sheet mask while applying it – oops. But it worked fine. If you haven’t tried a 3D fitting mask, you really should – they are pre-formed with a center seam so that it curves to your profile better than a flat sheet mask. This particular type has super cutesy packaging but it also delivers on the product inside. The amount of serum and formula are perfect – this mask leaves my skin supple and clear looking. (Since I threw away all of my sheet mask packaging as I use them, I’ve repurposed the pictures from my sheet mask stash post)
Stash worthiness: 9/10     Repurchase: Yes

Etude House Skin Note Hydrogel Mask in Deep Moisturing – $5 each (eBay)
This is my first hydrogel mask and while it feels really nice, I don’t see a big difference between using this or a cotton sheet mask. The texture of the hydrogel is similar to a really firm, very thin layer of Jello. It’s sandwiched between 2 plastic films and I was sure I was going to tear the mask while I was positioning onto my face (but I didn’t). This mask comes in 2 parts – one for the upper portion of the face and the other for the lower.  I guess the hydrogel vs a paper ensures the mask fits very snugly over the skin. Overall it was nice but I’m not sure worth the higher price tag.
Stash worthiness: 7/10     Repurchase: Maybe
trash201604_3
Life Brand Hydrating Facial Sheet Mask – $2 each or 3 for $5 (Shoppers Drug Mart)
This has hyaluronic acid and konjac as the feature ingredients which helps to provide hydration to the skin.  I really like these Life Brand sheet masks (it’s the private label brand of Shoppers Drug Mart) – the paper is nice and thick, the openings fit my face and there’s a good amount of serum.  And they’re made in Korea.
Stash worthiness: 9/10     Repurchase: Yes
trash201604_14
Bath and Body Works Waikiki Beach Coconut Ultra Shea Body Cream – $13 for 226 g (Bath and Body Works)
Amazing stuff! Of course you know I love the scent but what really made this a favourite-worthy item was the hydrating formula. It’s just a step below a body butter, but thicker than a body lotion. I don’t think I’d buy the BBW body lotions anymore (those always seem watery to me) but instead I’ll get these. The only thing I don’t like is how FAST I go through a tube of this. I used this up in less than a month!
Stash worthiness: 9/10     Repurchase: Yes

Mitchum Power Gel Antiperspirant in Unscented – $8 for 80g (drugstores)
Yes, this is a men’s antiperspirant! It’s got a whopping 25% of aluminum sesquichlorohydrate when most antiperspirants contain 17%. This had been my go to antiperspirant for ages until I decided to make the switch over to deodorants. You’ll be pleased to know that I’ve now gone completely without antiperspirant for the past 2 weeks!
Stash worthiness: 9/10     Repurchase: Maybe

L’Oreal Bare Naturale Mascara (discontinued)
Another one bites the dust. This contain a measley 4.8ml of product – a tube lasts me 3 months max, sadly. I have 3 tubes left of this. 2016 will be the year when I will have a moment of silence for this magical mascara.
Stash worthiness: 10/10     Repurchase:  😥

Shiseido Nourishing Mascara Base – $25 for 8ml (department stores, select drugstores and online)
This was my favourite lash primer – but I’ve found a cheaper alternative that I like just as much. Read more here.
Stash worthiness: 9/10     Repurchase: Maybe

L’Oreal Voluminous Butterfly Mascara – $16.50 for (drugstores)
Full review of this here. Another Project Focus 10 product gone!
Stash worthiness: 8/10     Repurchase: Yes

Quo Luxury Cotton Facial Pads – $7.50 for 165 count (Shoppers Drug Mart)
This is the fake wannabe Shiseido Facial Cotton. I did a comparison review of this against the real thing – this one sucks! Don’t waste your money. I ended up using this up to remove my nail polish.
Stash worthiness: 4/10     Repurchase: No

Quo Luxury Cotton Rounds – $4 for 80pcs (Shoppers Drug Mart)
These are pretty good – I normally use the Delon+ Premium Cotton Rounds which are really inexpensive and totally lint-free. These Quo ones are a bit more cushy and softer compared to them, but also more expensive and slightly linty.
Stash worthiness: 8/10     Repurchase: Maybe
Lise_watier_metamorfix
Lise Watier Métamorfix Liquid Transformer – $16 for 15ml (Shoppers Drug Mart, Lise Watier online, select Sears stores)
I’m using a stock photo because I gave the bottle to a friend who regularly uses her eyeshadow as eyeliner. I bought this ages ago with the intention to do this myself but I hardly ever used it. It found a better home with her. I have the Inglot version of this as well.
Stash worthiness: 8/10     Repurchase: No
trash201604_15
Alpha Hydrox Enhanced Cream 10% Glycolic AHA – $11 for 56g (Winners and online)
Not photographed because I traded this product in at Consonant Skincare when they ran their annual trade-in promotion where you bring in a skincare product and they give you 50% off. I reviewed this in my Top 5 Autumn Skincare collab post. I was almost finish the tub.
Stash worthiness: 9/10     Repurchase: Yes

Paula’s Choice Resist Weekly Resurfacing Treatment with 10% AHA – $35 USD for 60ml (online)
Another product I don’t have in my possession anymore because I did another trade-in event – this time at Pure + Simple. On Earth Day they ran the same promotion as Consonant Skincare – bring in a skincare item and they’ll give you 50% off (I’ll post about what I redeemed for in my April Low-Buy Accountability). I love this product from Paula’s Choice – it’s probably my top pick from the brand. I use it on a weekly basis as a chemical exfoliating treatment and my skin feels like a baby’s butt the next day. A bottle of this lasts me about 4 months with weekly use. I will forever repurchase this!

Becca Boudoir Skin Mineral Powder in Desire (discontinued but I got mine for $8 for 7g at Winners)
Just look at the sad state of this powder! Once I hit pan on this compact, I knew it’d be only a matter of time before the product would break apart and crumble.  I like this powder a lot – it’s been my go-to touch up powder midday when I’m at work. I blot my face and then dust a light layer of this to refresh (and that’s all I typically do to touch up my makeup during the day).  This powder is discontinued and replaced with Perfect Skin Mineral Powder which contains 9.5g and housed in a larger compact. I really enjoyed the small size of this old Becca compact though (it’s approx 6cm or 2½” across) – it’s perfect for the purse. I do have another unopened one of this but I’m going to keep this empty compact and see if I can try to press other powders into it.
Stash worthiness: 8/10     Repurchase: Maybe (the new version)

Sample / Travel Size

trash201604_12
L’Occitane Shea Butter Ultra Rich Lip Balm – my friend received this in a gwp bag and she passed it onto me. I LOVE this thing! It’s hydrating and not sticky. I will definitely get the full size of this one of these days…

The Face Shop Therapy Secret-made Anti-Aging Cream – since the essence made me break out, I ended up using this as a hand cream. It’s got an odd kind of texture where it kind of rolls off the skin and I have to really massage it in.

Vincent Longo Water Canvas Base Primer – I received this sample when I bought the Water Canvas Foundation. It’s actually a very nice primer. I’ll keep this in mind if I’m in the market for a primer. It worked equally well with the corresponding foundation as with other foundations.
trash201604_11
Clarins One-Step Gentle Exfoliating Cleanser – this is a nice cleanser but a little too harsh for me to use daily. I received a few of these in various gwp which I will use up but I’d not purchase the full size.

Klorane Leave-In Spray with Flax Fiber – what an utterly useless product, it was like spraying tap water into my hair. BUT, I freakin love the little spray nozzle on this thing. I’m going to refill it with a facial mist to keep in my purse.

Yves Rocher Collection Ete Shower Gel – got this for free and it was a nondescript scent and an adequate shower gel.

Neutrogena Rainbath – my SO and I did a foot peel and we had to soak our feet nightly for a week to help them peel. I like putting this Rainbath into the water for a warm sudsy soak. I have about 10 of these bottles stolen rescued from hotel rooms.

Hey, if you stopped reading after the first 2 products and skipped down to the bottom, I don’t blame you! That was a LOT of stuff. Sometimes I wonder if I should keep up the mini reviews or if I should just do a rating / repurchase or not, and call it a day!

    1. I like it BETTER than Bioderma but that’s not saying much. I don’t love Bioderma – it’s not even in my top 3 micellar waters anymore. I find it not to remove makeup as well as other micellar waters I’ve used (for reference, I like: Yves Rocher 3 Teas, Reversa, Sukin, Caudalie, Bioderma). Yes, i really liked the scent of the Sukin!

    1. The L’Occitane is a thinner formula – but it absorbs into the lips really well. It doesn’t last as long compared to the C.O. Bigelow so it’s better for me as a day time lip treatment.

  1. Wow, that’s a lot! The My Melody masks looks insanely cute!

Sorry to hear about your favourite mascara. It’s sooo sad to see a favourite product disappear. I boycotted Dove for a while because they discontinued my favourite shower gel – nectarine and ginger. And that was only a shower gel…

    1. I wasn’t so sure about how that My Melody mask would perform but it’s amazing! I love how Asian cosmetics deliver on both form and function.
Grr part of me is mad about the discontinuation of that L’Oreal mascara but part of me sees it as a challenge to find a replacement. I still haven’t found one but the search continues…

  2. That sounds awesome and oh my! How you managed to finish it so soon? Great Stashy! I couldn’t pick one from these empties as all are from amazing brands. Simply stunning! Have a wonderful week ahead dear.

    1. I think on average I go through a face cream every 4 months. Toners and micellar waters maybe about every 3 months. That’s just what I’ve observed through these empties posts. 🙂

  3. I really enjoyed this post! It’s a shame that L’Oreal discontinued that mascara you love so much. I actually haven’t seen that one here. I used to love L’Oreal’s Telescopic Explosion mascara but it was discontinued here before I could buy another one. I know the feeling!
L’Oreal does make some amazing mascaras. 🙂

    1. Yes, I think L’Oreal and CoverGirl makes my favourite mascaras from the drugstore! It’s always so disheartening when I discover one of my favourite products get discontinued. 😦

  4. It always amazes me how much skincare you go through! I feel like I need up up my game, haha. Is that the same sheet mask you sent me in the giveaway!? I can’t remember what it was called but the descriptions sounds the same. Lots of serum, good fit and not so freaking thin that I tear it! I also REALLY love that towel body wash scrubber thing. It’s SOOOO good at exfoliating!

    1. Yes that’s the same mask I sent to you! I was pretty impressed with them too – did your little one see you with the mask on? 😆
And yesss that body scrubby thing is the best! My skin tingles when I use it! Glad you like them!

      1. He did, haha. He’ll say “silly mommy” and then I usually chase him around the house pretending I’m going to give him a kiss (he won’t kiss me if my face doesn’t look “normal” to him).

    1. For me, setting spray is more to get rid of a powdery look. Sometimes they will help the foundation not to break down as much but generally, I don’t think they prolong foundation wear time – I see that as more of a function of a primer and setting powder.

  5. Hah, I KNEW you’ve been eating the products! 😉
When I saw the Becca compact in your Featured Image, I thought it was the Opal highlight which we bought around the same time, and I was like “…already?!” haha.
The Life brand sheet masks sound awesome! I’ve never really paid attention to them at all, but they’re going on my shopping list now!
One Waikiki Beach Coconut product down and it’s not even summer yet 😉
Love the mini reviews, you should keep ’em!

    1. Oh no, the Opal highlight is safe and sound, don’t worry! 😛
I didn’t give those Life brand masks much thought but I’ve used several kinds of them and I like them all – a nice inexpensive pick me up!
I’m currently using a Waikiki Beach Coconut shower gel so wait for that empty coming up! 😆

      1. A little overwhelmed and distracted but otherwise good 🙂 I finally got a chance to actually read some blog posts over the last few days so I feel like I’ve found a bit of equilibrium! How have you been? I’ve missed chatting in the comments lately!
