CoverGirl TruNaked Eyeshadow Palette in Roses

It may not seem like it lately, but I’m not really an eye shadow palette kind of girl. And certainly, I’ve never gravitated toward drugstore eye shadow palettes. But what got me intrigued with the CoverGirl TruNaked palette were the general rave reviews online, and also seeing amazing live swatches from Allura Beauty.  There are 3 versions available and I ended up with the Roses palette:

This palette costs $14.99 regularly but I redeemed Optimum Points for mine.

There are 8 colours in the palette, with a combined weight of 6.5g (roughly 0.81g each) – it measures 11.5cm x 7cm x 1cm.  As far as the palette layout, it’s not my favourite configuration with the skinny strips, but these are wide enough that a MAC 239 brush can easily fit in each panel.  And for a drugstore palette, the case isn’t terrible, but the plastic feels slightly on the flimsy side. The cover reminds me of the quality of a CD case cover – just a little bit of pressure would probably crack it.

The fact that CoverGirl even went a step further and bothered to give names to each of the shades is aces in my books! You all know what happens when a palette leaves the shades unnamed! (I will name them for you!) 😆

Left to right:
• almond (pink tinged ivory – matte)
• champagne (light pink – shimmer)
• baby (light pinky mauve – matte)
• rose gold (warm pink – shimmer)
• copper rose (dusty mauve – matte)
• dusk (rosy taupe – frost)
• mauvergine (plummy brown – frost)
• mousse (deep plum – satin)

And did you catch that? This palette is made in Canada! You know what other brands produce their products in Canada? MAC, Nars, Bobbi Brown – to name a few. I was quite floored to see that this palette is made in Canada, and not in China like many drugstore brands are nowadays. So then it’s no surprise that I found the formula to be quite impressive:

(I suspect that Copper Rose and Dusk are mislabeled. I think Dusk should be the matte mauve and Copper Rose is the shimmery taupe – but this is the order as per the label on the back of the palette.)

The stand out shades for me are Baby, Rose Gold, Dusk, and Mauvergine. Actually, I love all the colours in this palette but these 4 are just a little more special. Honestly, I wouldn’t change a single shade in this palette! It’s a fantastic stand alone palette – I’ve got my highlight, crease and transition shades all contained in this palette.  If I was going to be super picky, I might have suggested a matte crease shade, but Mousse is not that shimmery, so I’ll let it pass.

My favourite way to wear this palette is Mauvergine in the crease with Rose Gold on the lid, Baby as the transition / blending colour and Almond for the brow bone.  The quality of both the mattes and frosts are outstanding – pigmented and blendable – I find the shimmers to be slightly loose and more prone to fall out.  The wear time of these shadows are good: about 8 hours before I see any fading and slight creasing.

It does contain a lame sponge tipped applicator, but at this price, I wasn’t expecting anything better. At least CoverGirl bothered to 1) provide anything at all 2) have dual ended design containing a flat paddle shape on one end with a pointed tip on the other.

Pros:
• Pigmented, smooth, blendable formula
• Consistently good formula for all finishes
• Great value
• Long wearing formula
• Can create complete eye look
• Made in Canada

Cons:
• Packaging a bit flimsy and no mirror
• Shimmers have some fall out

Stash worthiness: 9/10

Run, don’t walk to your nearest store and pick this palette up! The Roses palette was my first pick of the 3 colour options offered since it contained colours I didn’t own a lot of in my collection. But based on the amazing quality and value, I’m likely going to pick up the other 2 colours (Goldens and Nudes). Have you tried the CoverGirl TruNaked palettes?

PS. For those in the UK and have no access to CoverGirl, the Max Factor Masterpiece Nude Palettes are exactly the same! 😉

  1. This looks a like a great little dupe for the Naked 3 palette! I’m impressed by the pigmentation of the swatches and how beautiful these shades look. I don’t know how often I would use the darker shades but the variety of colours and finishes is good value for money 🙂

    1. I don`t own any of the UD Naked palettes so unfortunately I can`t compare but based on swatches online, yes, I do think this is probably very similar to that one. Yes, I don`t use the darkest shade often but I have used it as a liner along the lash line smoked out and it`s nice. So happy to have a drugstore palette that is this impressive!

    1. I wasn’t even aware of the similarities until people started mentioning that in the comments. The quality of this is outstanding! No need to fork over the moolah for the UD.

  2. The champagne shade is gorgeous. In fact all the colours are. I agree with you we have some similar high street dupes here, so I’ll be looking to purchase a similar one to this☺ x

    1. It’s rare that I like so many colours in a larger format palette (I’m more into quads) but this one just checks all the boxes for me! I hope you find something similar! If not, that Max Factor one is the same thing! (they’re sister brands)

  3. Oh my goodness, this palette is absolutely beautiful! 😍 I tried to pick a favourite shade from your swatches but couldn’t. I don’t believe this is an exact dupe for the Naked 3 but it looks like it sure as heck can make a good substitution for it.

    1. I have no interest in the UD Naked palettes but it’s good to hear this is a good alternative! I just can’t believe that I prefer this palette over both the Lise Watier Nude and the Becca Ombre Rouge! For the price of one of those, I can get all 3 CoverGirls!

    1. This was a very unexpected LOVE as well! I thought, ok, this will be nice but I didn’t think I’d prefer this over my Becca Ombre Rouge palette! $45 vs $15! 😮

  4. I remember I featured this on my page back in February “What’s New at the Drugstore” and I find that this shade is very similar to UD Naked 3. This is probable my fave out of the three palettes they have. So glad you like this palette and yes! no mirror but hey! for the price.. I mean what can you ask for right? LOL

    1. I’m so glad I gave it a try! I hope I won’t be disappointed with the other 2… I do still want it even though they’re not your top ones. I don’t mind no mirrors especially if I’m not taking this travelling with me.

    1. Yes next time there’s a sale, I highly recommend it. Even for the regular price at $15, it’s a really good value. But I’ve been seeing it on sale for 25% off or I saw at Rexall buy one get one 50% off.

  6. Wow this palette looks fantastic! Being the palette girl that I am I usually steer clear of drugstore ones like this because they always get terrible reviews but this one looks amazing! I’ll have to scope it out next time I’m at Shoppers!

    1. I don’t buy a lot of drugstore eye shadows in general. There used to be some good formulations but over the years they seem to have gone down hill (esp Revlon eye shadows). I’ve been seeing these palettes go on sale for 25% off so maybe wait for a sale.

  7. You got me at “Made in Canada” … Very surprising !!!
I’m such a snob when it comes to eyeshadow … I have to admit that these shadows look so pigmented !!! The colors are STUNNING too !
You rated it 9/10 and my poor Becca is a 4/10 … If I see this one on sale, I will buy it 😀
BYM your swatches are great …

    1. Yes this is the palette I was telling you that I was SO impressed with! I am a snob too! I can’t believe I love this and not the Becca. I feel like I need to give my head a shake! But honestly, if you removed the brand / label and tested this with a high end palette, you wouldn’t be able to tell the difference! It just goes to show our prejudice… and how marketing works! I mean, why is that Becca palette $48? It’s only made in the US, not even Italy. And how are they able to make this one in Canada, selling only for $15! Crazy huh!

      1. You are so wright !!!
Just take eye and brow pencils for example, Makeup Geek, NYX , ABH are all made in the same exact place !!! (Why is the pricing not the same ??? Marketing 101)
As stupid as I will sound, the damn packaging is still important to me … more than 33$+ difference important, I don’t think so !
You know the greatest net marginal benefit is in the cosmetic industry !!! (Such a ripoff !!!)

  8. I will check this one out next time I’m at the drugstore. I love my Maybelline e/s palettes, but I didn’t like the L’Oreal palettes at all (I gave them away). This one looks much better. I love that its made in Canada.

    1. I’ve not tried the L’Oreal ones… they don’t seem to grab me for some reason. Glad you like the Maybelline ones. I received on from Rachael’s giveaway so I’m excited to try it!
