Tarte Tartelette Tease Review

I’m finally in the position to do a review on this palette, since I used it exclusive for the entire 2 weeks I was on vacation, as it was the only eye shadow product I packed with me. ๐Ÿ™‚
SEphora_VIB_haul_April2016_7
The Tarte Tartelette Tease palette normally sells for $25 but I bought it during the April VIB sale for $21.25. It contains 6 shades, each weighing 0.85g for a combined total palette weight of 5.10g

Prior to this palette, I had not used much Tarte makeup. Actually, I only own the lone Tarte blush in Exposed which I don’t much care for (it’s slated to be re-homed). So I was somewhat unsure about this palette.

These eye shadows are part of their Amazonian Clay range which Tarte touts as both mattifying and hydrating. Tarte offers eye shadows, blushes, mascara and foundations featuring Amazonian Clay.

This palette features 4 mattes and 2 shimmers:
โ€ข whisper – light peach (matte)
โ€ข wink- light pink nude (matte)
โ€ข crush – golden taupe (frost)
โ€ข first class – rosey taupe (shimmer)
โ€ข heartbreaker – deep yellow brown (matte)
โ€ข bff – deep cool plum (matte)

I want to commend Tarte for including a matte highlight, which isn’t very common in eye shadow palettes.
tarte_tartelette_tease_10
My favourite shades are (not surprisingly) First Class and Crush. I prefer the finish of First Class slightly more since it’s smoother and less chunky looking compared to Crush. ย The shadows lasted well on my lids, with slight fading at around the 10 hour mark, but still looks good after full day of sightseeing in the hot, humid Japanese climate. ๐Ÿ™‚

The colours in the palette lend themselves to easyย eye looks and my favourite way to wear this is one of twoย ways:
tarte_tartelette_tease_9
1) lid = crush, crease = heartbreaker, transitional = wink, highlight = whisper
2) lid = first class, crease = bff, transitional = wink, highlight = whisper
Some days I just wear either of the shimmer shades on the lid, blend slightly with Wink and call it a day.

Strangely, this palette smells slightly of vanilla. I didn’t know this beforehand ย and when I first started using this palette, I was puzzled as to why I suddenly smelled sweet vanilla while I was applying my eye makeup! ๐Ÿ˜› The smell doesn’t offend me but it may bother some people.

I also love how tiny and slim the palette is, measuring only 9.8cm x 5.8cm x 1.2cm. ย It is made of cardboard which isn’t the most sturdy but I had no issues when travelling. The palette is secured with a magnetic closure. I also appreciate that it contains a mirror inside.

By now, you know I like to make little tweaks to pre-made palettes. For the Tartelette Tease, I would only dial up the colour ofย Wink into a deeper rosey shade for the transition, like this:
tarte_tartelette_tease_4
In its current state, I find it too similar to Whisperย –ย original for reference:
tarte_tartelette_tease_3
I’m really pleased that I brought this palette on my trip, I never felt the need for any additional colours – every thing I wantedย was contained in this little gem.
tarte_tartelette_tease_11
The eye shadows are made in the US. In Canada, Tarte is available only at Sephora.

Pros:
โ€ข Long wearing formula: creaseย andย fade-resistent formula
โ€ข Pigmented
โ€ข Can create complete eye look
โ€ข Very compact packaging
โ€ข Good value – great way to sample 6 colours
โ€ข Cruelty-free, paraben-free, mineral oil-free

Cons:
โ€ข Deeper matte shades are slightly powdery and drier, making them more difficult to blend
โ€ข Cardboard packaging
โ€ข Scented (unnecessary)

Stash worthiness: 8/10

This palette was the perfect item to dip my toes into Tarte cosmetics. Do you have this palette? Are you a fan of Tarte cosmetics – please recommend your favourites to me! ๐Ÿ™‚

    1. It held up really well under both conditions! It was much hotter and more humid in Japan compared to home but I didn’t experience big difference in the performance. I should mention that I always use an eye shadow primer. ๐Ÿ™‚

  1. This palette looks gorgeous especially those two shades Crush and First Class, so pretty! I have the two tartelette palettes from Tarte and I love the second one, Tartelette in Bloom! I highly recommend it! Definitely one of my favourite ever palettes, really great quality eye shadows!

    1. I just looked up the Tartelette in Bloom – looks super pretty! I really appreciate that Tarte includes both mattes and shimmers and I find the quality of them to be fairly consistent. Often, the shimmers outperform the mattes by a large margin! Thanks so much for the recommendation, it’ll go on my wish list! ๐Ÿ™‚

      1. It really is a gorgeous palette! Indeed, the palette is mostly matte but the mattes are super buttery and such a dream to work with yet the shimmers included are so good as well! No bother, such a great palette!

  2. Love Tarte Cosmetics! There foundation is the only foundation I use (Amazonian foundation) and it’s amazing! I also love their rain forest of the sea skin care collection & eyeshadow palette from rain forest of the sea. Great post girl! Xo

    1. Good to know! I’ve eyed the Rain Forest of the Sea palette – it’s so pretty! And now that you mention it, I think I was curious about their tinted moisturizer / foundation. I will have to go try it and get a colour match. Thanks for the recs!

    1. I was surprised at how much I like the deeper matte shades – they’re really pigmented too!I wore the burgundy shade today in my outer v to deepen my lash line. ๐Ÿ™‚

  3. How pretty. I can definitely see this as being a really good travel palette, since it has such a good mix of shimmery and matte, and has one highlight, one transition shade, lid shades, and crease shades…basically everything you need in one compact palette! Not to mention it comes with a mirror – handy! Crush and First Class are stunning.
I’ve been noticing more and more palettes lately with matte highlights instead of shimmery. Out of the palettes that I own, more of them include matte highlights vs shimmery. I’m starting to get sick of it, especially since I prefer to highlight my browbone with a shimmery shade!

    1. Re: more matte highlights vs shimmery Oh really? I really like matte highlights! But I always see shimmer (more like FROSTY) highlights. I’ll have to keep my eye open.
Yes, this was a well thought out palette for travel. I can imagine if someone wants to keep this in their purse, they could too.

      1. Yes! It’s so funny that you made a comment about not seeing enough matte highlights in palettes, because as I was getting ready just this morning, I was like “Ahhhh why do all my palettes only have matte highlights?!” lol. Frosty highlights are no good, either. A soft satin highlight is usually my favourite. I do like matte highlights, but I feel like they don’t show up well on my skin. Like they’re not…highlight-y enough, haha.

        1. Yes, like a loser prize! Awww I shouldn’t make fun. I do feel for you about the Brexit and lack of Sephora. Canada only got Sephora not that long ago so I do remember a time when I used to lust over all the Sephora hauls but had no access. I understand!

          Liked by 1 person

          1. Haha we at least deserve some sort of prize. Thanks. It’s a pain as shipping etc is so high I don’t order from Sephora. There’s never a Sephora when I go on holiday either. I need to plan it better haha. How many stores do you have in Canada? X

            Liked by 1 person

                1. It’s more than I thought we would have for sure! It’s silly UK doesn’t have a single ONE. UK has DOUBLE the population of Canada! And our land mass is so vast, it’s very expensive for companies to ship goods across the country. UK can fit into ONE of our provinces:

                  1. I thought you was going to say Canada has a few stores not 50. That’s mad. I always thought the UK would be an obvious place for a Sephora as it would do so well. Can you imagine if one opened it London? People would go mad for it x

                    1. Boots and Superdrug do high street brands and some high end like Dior etc. House of Fraser, John Lewis and Debenhams have high end beauty counters but they’re all department stores. There’s no shops like Sephora that are all beauty x

    1. Isn’t it gorgeous? I looked to see if Tarte sells eye shadow singles in that colour but nope, they do not. They’re ALL about pre-made palettes. I guess they know that’s where it’s at.

  4. That palette is so beautiful! I love the colours in it.
If Tarte was available in South Africa I would have probably been running off to purchase it right now. ๐Ÿ˜€
Great review! I enjoyed how thorough and detailed it was. ๐Ÿ™‚

  5. Great review! I love the two shimmery shades, first class and crush. I was never one for matte eye shadows because my oily lids would soon crease and they would get cakey, yuk! But seeing that they’re great primers out there I can always give it another shot ๐Ÿ™‚ Thanks for posting!

    1. Do you use eye primers? My eyelids are oily too but I can wear mattes no problem. My current favourite inexpensive eye primer is the Prestige Primed and Ready. It’s not expensive and works really well. The Elf cheapo one isn’t bad either – have you tried that?

      Liked by 1 person

      1. Yes, I do. My eye lids get so oily throughout the day, I need something to keep my shadows from running down my face, lol. I did try ELF’s, but it did nothing for me. I’m absolutely loving Makeup Revolutions Aqua Seal Liquid eye primer, I think it costs about $6 and all of my eyeshadows stay put. I’ll have to check out the prestige version for sure, I love trying different primers especially if they’re affordable. Thanks for the recommendation โ˜บ๏ธ.

        1. Good luck in your quest! I like that there are good drugstore options now. Before it was only Urban Decay or Too Faced eye primers – now you can get a good one for less than $10!

          Liked by 1 person

          1. Thanks! I shall, makeup quests are always fun, never boring, lol. You most certainly can and thank god! Those primers do not come cheap, granted Urban Decay’s primers last pretty long, you don’t need much.

  6. I’m always impressed with your tech skills. I agree that Wink would probably be improved if it were lighter. I also wish the the crease shades were just a bit lighter but that’s because I’m as white as the screen I’m typing on ๐Ÿ˜› Loved the review!

    1. Aw thanks! Oh see, I want the transition shade to be darker! ๐Ÿ˜›
I do wonder why Tarte doesn’t offer single shadows or customizable palettes? They only sell pre-made palettes. In your opinion, which brand has better eye shadows: Tarte or Too Faced?

      Like

      1. Too Faced, hands down. I didn’t even have to think about it, haha. The only shadows that I’ve ever LIKED from Tarte are the Amazonian formula. The rest are terribly unpigmented and fade super quickly (their holiday palettes are the worst).

        1. Well, I guess I need that Chocolate Bar palette then! Next Sephora VIB sale I’ll pick one up. ๐Ÿ˜› Is the Chocolate Bar your absolute favourite Too Faced one? I was also advised that the Semi Sweet one is good too. I can’t handle the Bon Bon with those heart shaped pans, ugh. I was kind of holding out for the possibility of a DARK chocolate bar palette – not sure if that’s on Too Faced’s radar!

          Liked by 1 person

          1. I want a dark chocolate bar too! And a while chocolate bar! I love the original Chocolate Bar the most, probably partially because it was my first “big girl” palette but I actually really enjoy the Semi-Sweet A LOT. There isn’t as much shade variation though. The warms are all very warm and then the cool tones are very cool. But if you like both taupes and orange browns the Semi Sweet is great.

            Liked by 1 person

            1. Oooh White Chocolate. yeah that would be pretty too. Well I guess Too Faced can space out their launches… they need ideas to maintain the momentum!
My thing with the Semi Sweet is that I want it for that Peanut Butter shade, but I’ve got NO use for the Blueberry Swirl shade. Everything else is great. The Chocolate Bar is very even across the board – nothing jarring and I’d get use out of all the shades. Decisions, decisions…

              Like

              1. Honestly, if the blueberry shade is the only thing stopping you I wouldn’t be worried. There are 16 shadows. Even if you only use 15 you’re only paying $3.93C per shadow. Just sayin!

  7. This palette looks pretty but I’m surprised to hear the packaging is cardboard. Like you, crush and first kiss look like they’d be my favourite shades too! I like the scent of vanilla but scented eyeshadows is something I’ve heard of before ๐Ÿ˜›

    1. It’s REALLY sturdy packaging… if that helps? It survived the flight to Japan, several train trips within Japan… ๐Ÿ˜›
I think scented eye makeup is strange! But at least it’s not very strong.

  8. I agree with others that the packaging is kind of off putting but I’d like to try! I have several Tarte palette’s though and I don’t find myself reaching for them though….. I love their foundations/concealers and mascaras though!

    1. I was eyeing the matte palette from Tarte – I was impressed by how pigmented these ones are, and how well they last on the lids. I’ll have to check out their foundations and concealers next time I’m at Sephora, thanks for the recs!

  9. I’ve been eyeing this palette. I own the original Tartlette, which is all matte shadows. Some complain they’re hard to blend but I don’t have that issue. I think they blend just fine. I’m currently testing out their Rainforest of the Sea Water Foundation. I should have first impressions on my blog Friday or Momday.

    1. This palette is little so it’s great for travel or in the purse. I was eyeing the all matte palette – I found the mattes in this palette quite pigmented and lasts all day. Looking forward to seeing your review on the foundation!

  10. I’m definitely intrigued by this palette! I bought it as a gift for a friend because it’s totally her colours. So glad you like it! I don’t have any Tarte eye shadows but this seems like a great way to dive into them!

    1. Aw that’s sweet you bought this for a friend instead of keeping it for yourself! It’s a good price even without the Sephora VIB sale. And yes, this was a great way to get more exposure to Tarte without too much cost.

    1. Yes, it’s very lightweight and the cardboard was sturdy enough that I didn’t feel like the eye shadows were at risk of crumbling. I’d definitely bring this on vacation again!
