This is a post that was inspired by Polished and Inspired! I had shown 2 lip oils in my last favourites post and she asked of the lip oils that I own, which do I prefer most. That got me thinking – perhaps I should do a comparison post! Thanks for the blog post idea! 😉
I own 3 lip oils which will be featured today, listed in the order in which I acquired them:
• Clarins Instant Light Lip Comfort Oil in Honey
• Sephora Collection Oil Infusion Color & Care in 06 Bubbly Grenadine
• Lancôme Juicy Shaker in Berry in Love
I got interested in lip oils because I already love facial and hair oils – it seemed to be a natural next step for me to get into this trend.
Clarins Instant Light Lip Comfort Oil in Honey – C$25 for 7ml
This was my first lip oil which I got late last year during an Optimum Points Redemption event. It was love at first use! It is a thicker formula so it stays on the lips much longer than balms, but it’s not as sticky as gloss would be. And I love honey flavoured lip products – the smell of this is very natural, not a synthetic honey. Unfortunately, it’s doesn’t taste like honey – which is probably for the best or else I’d lick my lips all day. 😉 It features jojoba, hazel and sunflower seed oils.
The doe-foot applicator is quite unique, featuring a scoop-like paddle shape that curves to hug the lips. There is no colour tint in this oil, but it leaves a shiny finish to the lips. Of the 3 that I own, this has the shiniest finish and is the longest lasting – it would be a great lipstick topper. I should note that when I got this, Clarins only offered the Honey flavour, but now they offer Raspberry (pink), and Red Berry (red) flavours. I have not actually seen these in person but I’ve read online that they leave a faint tint on the lips and no staining properties. This is made in France.
Sephora Collection Oil Infusion Color & Care in 06 Bubbly Grenadine – C$18 for 5.5ml
I ordered this in January since I’d read reviews on how this is similar to the YSL Volupté Tint-In-Oil. And just look at that packaging – it looks like a test tube! 🙂 This is offered in 9 colours ranging from creamy lavender all the way to a deep vampy brown. Bubbly Grenadine is a bright warm pink that provides a coral tint to my lips.
The applicator is a typical lip gloss doe-foot applicator with a slight slant – although I should mention that the stem of this wand is very long so it’s a bit unwieldy. This lip oil feels light on the lips and is slippery, as the texture is on the thin side. It contains Kendi oil and shea butter, and there is no smell or taste. The finish is quite shiny and does leave a faint stain on my lips as it wears away. Out of the 3 lip oils I have, this one is the shortest lasting on the lips. It is made in Italy.
Lancôme Juicy Shaker in Berry in Love – C$28 for 6.5ml
I got this in a completely impromptu Lancome haul but I don’t regret it one bit! This lip oil has the widest array of shades, offered in 14 shades. The most distinctive feature is its cocktail shaker inspired packaging, just how fun is this! The flocked cone-shaped application is one of the softest, plushest that I’ve felt on a lip applicator – I’m a little addicted to applying this to my lips. 😛
Do note that this product does separate, in fact, the official name of this lip oil is “Lip Shaker: Pigment Infused Bi-Phase Lip Oil” so it is meant to do that. It is quite fun to see the pigment settle to the bottom, almost like lava lamp. This doesn’t happen quickly though, in order for me to get the above shot, I had to wait 3 days after I’d shaken it up, for the pigment to settle back down! 😛 There are little metal balls inside the shaker that help mix the pigment, similar to nail polish. This lip oil contains rosehip, peach kernel, cranberry seed, and sweet almond oils.
I found this to have the least amount of shine of the 3 oils, but the best staining properties (of course, the caveat I would add is that it would depend on the shade you chose – the lighter colours would not have much colour or staining on the lips). The Berry in Love shade is a cool-tone berry colour with a hidden blue shimmer – the shimmer isn’t apparent on the lips but it looks mesmerizing in the shaker. The wear time of this lip oil is in the middle of the other 2. It smells like raspberries (different colours have different scents) and tastes faintly sweet, which means I keep licking my lips and have to reapply (which I don’t mind – that super soft applicator!) Like the Clarins, this is also made in France.
Here are swatches of all 3:
The Sephora Grenadine and the Lancôme Berry in Love look similar on the arm swatch but on my lips they are more distinct – Grenadine is warm while Berry in Love is cool-toned pink. This is evident on white tissue:
Both are great colours for the summer, actually. This is the staining left behind after I tissued the swatches off my skin:
So which one is my favourite? I can’t say definitively since I use and recommend all 3, but I would suggest the following:
• Choose Clarins if you’re looking for a long lasting nourishing lip treatment in a sleek, purse friendly packaging
• Choose Sephora if you’re just starting to try lip oils and don’t want to spend too much money
• Choose Lancôme if you want something novel housed in a fun little shaker and great colour selection
These are all mid- to higher end of the price spectrum – I’m sure this trend will trickle down to drugstore brands soon enough (I know Milani came out with some lip oils, but they’re not readily available in Canada) – say, a Revlon or Maybelline. I wouldn’t be surprised. Have you jumped onto the lip oil trend? 🙂
You can laugh at me after I tell you that I own two Sephora Oil Infusion and never bother with them since I thought they were very bright Liquid Lipsticks or “Je ne sais quoi!!!” … And now I read your post and feel so ridiculous but happy that I now can try them !!!😂💄
As you know I don’t really wear a ton of lipsticks, I’m more of a lip gloss girl so these should be right up my alley … Somehow the Clarins seems more interesting to me !!!

No no, silly girl, they’re very sheer! You can definitely wear them. They feel like a very light lip gloss – more slip and more hydrating. I hope you’ll like them!
The Clarins one has been so great for my lips as they’ve been suffering – it’s very nourishing!

Silly alright !!! We have the same color (06) Bubbly Grenadine 💄👯
Wearing it right now and it’s ok! Definitely more slip than my beloved lip glosses 😐

I’m adding either the Clarins or Lancome lip oil to my list for the next Optimum bonus redemption day! There must be one coming soon…?

I think you’ll really like the Lancome one. It’s really chic and the colours are great. It’s a bit more spendy so it’s the perfect redemption item! Not sure if there’s an event coming up… my contact went on maternity leave – boo!

I’ve always been more of a liquid lipstick person so my lips are perpetually disgustingly dry, no matter how much exfoliating I do and lip balm I apply. I’d love to give that Clarins a try since it would last through more of the day.

Yes, that one has serious staying power! It can be worn over lipsticks too.

Never tried a lip oil so I’m glad you posted this. I was afraid it would just feel thick on the lips but they sound pretty comfortable to wear. The juicy shaker just looks like so much fun but I’d definitely try it out first with the Sephora Brand! Great Post, as always 🙂

Thanks! Yes, my first thought was that they would be too much for the lips but they’re made the textures very light and comfy to wear on the lips. They don’t feel goopy or coated – just a veil of light oil. I hope you’ll like it!

I remember you shared the Lancome one and was really intrigued by the shape of the applicator. Now I am even more interested to try this myself. 😊

It’s just so cute! And fun to shake. And I get compliments when I wear that colour – it leaves a nice stain.

Not a huge fan of lip stain but I know I used Milani once and it was nice.. But this Lancome is really pretty.. Looks so natural when all you have is the stain.😚

I’ve only tried the essence one and loved it! Haven’t found it here yet to replace it as not all Pharmaprix (shoppers) carry essence.

You got that through the Generation Beauty event right? I’ve not actually seen them offered at any Essence stands here.

Yes, it was available for sale at GenBeauty. I need to replace it!

So sweet of her! I so wish we had Lawtons here. That store is the BEST! I smiled so much when you mentioned that on the podcast. And yes they do carry LA Splash there – I bought a couple of eye shadows when I was out that way. 🙂

Aw! Hopefully she will be able to find them, otherwise I might have to order them online.
I checked the Canadian Essence site, the lip oils aren’t even listed, so we probably won’t be able to find them.

I have the Sephora one but wasn’t quite sure of what it was supposed to do. I’m pulling mine out today and I’m going to get wearing it! I so want to try the Clarins one, it’s been on my list for months.

I’d say it’s like a lightweight lip gloss and lip treatment. It’s not really meant to be full on colour – it’s for people who might prefer to wear tinted lip balms. The Clarins one is much more of a lip treatment – it would be similar to the Bite Beauty Agave lip mask.

Ooo gotcha, I love the Clarins packaging and applicator too

Oooh, thanks for doing this post! It was so informative. I don’t know much about lip oils…the only ones I’ve ever “tried” (as in swatched) are the YSL Volupte Tint-In-Oils, and those were a little too steep in price. I think if I do get around to trying lip oils, it’ll be the Sephora ones – even though it’s the shortest lasting, it’s a decent price to try something for the first time!

Definitely give the Sephora ones a try, I like that they’re a good middle of the road option – you get colour and some lip nourishment and it doesn’t break the bank. I am waiting for a drugstore brand option to pop up soon though!

Nice post. Loving the cute tube and shaker packaging by sephora and lancome. Loving the pinks color of those two as well.
Don’t think I own a lip oil yet but I think you’ve inspired me.

I’m hoping that drugstore brand will come out with their own versions so that it’s more readily available for those who didn’t want to spend too much. It’ll be only a matter of time, I think!

Oh yes, drugstore brands have been really good at quickly copying trends and I think their quality has improved massively in recent years too. fingers crossed.

I love the coloured tints of the Sephora and Lancome oils! I bet the little shaker is so much fun to use, the packaging looks so cute!

The shaker thing is fun to use but not too discrete to shake and apply! 😛 The colour is really lovely though.

The only lip oil I own is Bubbly Grenadine – I’m kind of on the fence with it. I love the sheer colour but I don’t find it super moisturizing. I do love the packaging though, especially how light it is, so easy to throw in my purse.
I’ve heard others rave about the Clarins lip oil as well, I might have to give those a try!

I agree, the Sephora one isn’t too moisturizing. It’s quite thin and doesn’t last long on the lip (~1 hr). The Clarins oil is much thicker and coats the lips better.

There are so many things that sound wrong with licking your lips and especially with ‘tasting / eating’ the lip oil… no matter how nice they smell *LOL*
Good to know about the lancome juicy tube applicator being soft. It’s one of those things that I can never tell until I buy them (sometimes regret / sometimes love).

The licking lips to taste the lip product stems from childhood! I remember vividly the taste of a lip balm that was I think meant to be like star fruit, it was green and slightly tart / sweet. If only I could find it again… and of course, all the Bonne Bell lip balm flavours!
That Lancome Shaker is the most fun an adult can have using a lip product and still get away with it… 😆

Amazing! I love my Clarins one and Lancome is just so fun. I have never even seen the Sephora one before. Yay, for lip oils!
Berry in Love i think is the most attractive one from all the available shades.

They all look pretty great. I’m not a big fan of the Sephora brand in general but I like the shade of the lip oil. I would go with Clarins if I had to choose. I like a long lasting product. Nice review, as always!!
