New Revlon Mascaras: Ultimate All-in-One and Volume + Length Magnified

I guess I’m on a drugstore kick lately, yesterday with the Maybelline SuperStay foundation, and today I’m reviewing 2 Revlon mascaras from their recent revamp of their mascara offering:

Ultimate All-in-One (red cap)
Volume + Length Magnified (blue cap)

I can’t remember the last time I bought a Revlon mascara. Maybe the Grow Luscious? That was years ago! And it never appealed to me enough to repurchase it. To me, Revlon excel at a lot of products – foundation, lipstick, nail polish – but mascaras are not one of their strengths.  And mascaras are cash cows for cosmetics companies – how frequently do we (“have to”) replace mascaras, and how many mascaras do we seem to have open at once (if you have just ONE mascara open right now, please comment below, and I don’t believe you!)  It’s a very lucrative market at the drugstore – just look at how wide the assortment is, and how often companies launch new mascaras.

So it was about time that Revlon overhauled their mascara collection! And the new collection is very impressive, with formulas to cater to various needs: length, volume, both, drama:

They even called it a Mascara Revolution! 😛

I picked up the Volume + Length Magnified (blue cap) first because I liked the look of the wand and I’m excited at the prospect of a mascara that provides both volume AND length. It features a normal bristle wand that is quite full and slightly larger than average (but not jumbo sized).

For me, the formula delivers more on volume than length but it did provide decent length to my lashes. What impressed me most was that it could hold a curl, and it did not smudge underneath my eyes! There was a tendency to deposit clumps upon application but I am able to comb out the clumps with my metal lash comb.  The description says there are fibres in this formula but I didn’t notice any on the wand or my lashes.

The results were feathery lashes that almost rival what I can achieve with CoverGirl’s LashBlast Volume (but CG LB is more water resistant and voluminous).  I rate this 8/10

I became interested in the Ultimate All-in-One (red cap) due to glowing reviews online about how amazing the wand was, and how great the formula was for lifting the lashes.  It features a silicone wand, with a mini brush head that’s oval shaped:

Is it me, or does the close up of the wand resemble the underbelly of a cockroach…? o_O

The formula is quite wet, and slightly goopy. It was a real challenge to not completely glue my lashes together – it made my 7 lashes look like 3! 😛 Also, I often got the mascara on my eyelids due to the wet formula, and even over time, it didn’t dry out to the point that it stopped being goopy. In terms of length and volume, it was just average in both departments.  Here’s a case where being Jack of all trades, means it’s master of none.

But, I can see why some people would love this formula, it holds a curl like a waterproof mascara does even though it’s not marketed as a waterproof formula. It also did not smudge under my eyes. Unfortunately, like waterproof mascaras, this one irritated my eyes whenever I wore it.  I rate this 6/10

They retail for C$10.99 each and I got mine during a 30% off sale.  Here’s how these 2 Revlon mascaras rate against some of my favourite mascaras:

Below are the official illustrations that demonstrate the results one can achieve using these mascaras (Ultimate All-in-One on the left, and Volume + Length Magnified on the right):

I have mixed feelings about the packaging. The tubes are unnecessarily bulky, I feel. But, I do like that they are not cylindrical so they don’t roll off a flat surface. And, I like the sleek look of the overall collection with the matte tube and coloured caps to distinguish between the types.  I’m interested in trying the Drama one next, since the bristles look similar to the CG LashBlast, also maybe because the cap is purple. And purple is my favourite colour. 😉

Now please, Revlon, it’s time to overhaul your eye shadows. The old Wet / Dry formula, Mattes, or even the Custom Eyes were great. The current selection isn’t doing anyone any favours.

Have you tried the new Revlon mascaras? What’s your current favourite drugstore mascara?

    1. Thanks! I have to memorize those, there are too many options and the packaging on some of them look similar. I’ll probably pick some up next month! ☺

  1. I quite like the packaging, the different coloured caps would make it easy to identify what each mascara is for! I don’t have one mascara open atm but two, one I barely use though lol!

    1. I’m usually a CoverGirl mascara wearer – I just love their formulations and they agree with me! I did recently try the Maybelline Lash Sensation mascara and I was so impressed!
Oh yes, I’ve got a ton of travel sized / sample mascaras in my drawers too – I really should dig them out!

  2. Think the last Revlon one I bought was the Lash Potion mascara! Not tried these yet and to be honest probably wont as I have so many mascaras backed up that I can barely use cause of the extensions! I don’t believe their official illustrations would have created that look on the all in one, the bristles look way too far apart to be volumising for me!

    1. You don’t need mascara at all with those lash extensions! Plus, don’t you have mascara samples overload?
Definitely, just by looking at the spacing of the bristles you can already tell how the mascaras will perform.

      1. No I just need them inbetween normally for a week or two. I currently don’t have them on and still have almost 2 weeks before they’re reapplied and I feel bald!

I do have several samples and full sizes though which will keep me going for a looooong time, I had got curious about these though pre-discovering my lazy love for lash extensions

  3. Oooh, the Volume + Length one looks awesome!! This one is going on my to-try list. I also wonder how the purple one (Definition) person…
Ew, you’re totally right – the red wand totally looks like the underbelly of a cockroach. Now I can’t unsee it!
Hehe, I typically only have one mascara open at any given time. I swear!!! My reason is that mascaras dry out so fast, that if I have two or three open at the same time, I’ll only get 1/3 use out of them before they are all dried out. Does that reason make sense to anyone else other than me?? lol

    1. You’re a rare bird to only have one mascara open at a time! I used to be better but for some reason lately I’ve wanted to try ALL the mascaras! (I currently have 3 opened that I rotate)
Yes your reason makes a lot of sense! I typically only keep mascaras for 3 months max anyway. Unless they suck then I get rid of them pronto!

      1. Hehe, it’s hard to resist temptation…I have a Shiseido mascara sample that I keep eyeing to open, but I’m forcing myself to wait until my current one is finished! Speaking of getting rid of sucky mascaras, I’m really disliking the CoverGirl Clump Crusher – I think it’s because I accidentally bought the waterproof version! I feel like waterproof formulas weigh down the lashes – mine go stick straight again within minutes of application! Am tempted to trash it and get the non-waterproof version 😦

        1. Oh no, that’s too bad about the Clump Crusher! I’ve not tried the waterproof version so I can’t compare but I had no issues with the non-wp version. But, the important question – did you experience any smudging?

  4. I have tried Revlon in past and didnt mind it. Currently from Drug store brands, I like CG Katy Perry in blue (i got it for review purposes and im really liking it), it actually reminds a bit of Dior Show in blue, just much more affordable version:)

    1. Oh the CG Katy Perry line has a mascara too? I didn’t know that! I will literally try every single CG mascara they release, that’s how much I love their mascaras! I shall have to get it next time I see a sale!

  5. I was drawn to this collection simply because of the packaging, but I’ve never tried a Revlon mascara and that’s OK. Still love my tarte Lights, Camera, Lashes! and L’oreal Voluminous.

    1. Haven’t tried Tarte but I know people rave about it. I wasn’t so sure about these Revlon ones since in the past their mascaras were mediocre. The blue cap one is definitely the best Revlon mascara I’ve tried so far.

  6. Ive seen this a lot but it didnt seem to appeal to me since I’ve never had great experience with Revlon before. The red cap wand reminds me of CG mascara (chubby) with short bristles. Arent they?

    Liked by 1 person

    1. No, the red cap isn’t like the CG LashBlast mascara wand. It’s teeny tiny and the bristles are really sparse. I didn’t like that one very much! If you’re happy with the CG mascaras, stick to those – they’re all 9 and 10 in my book! 🙂

  7. Great review, I’m a big fan of your rating charts!! I’ve been eyeing this collection for a while and then blue one sounds promising, so I’ll have to grab one when I finish up one of the 8 tubes I’m currently rotating through

  8. Not only do I only have one tube of mascara open right now, but it is also the only one I own at all! It’s the water-resistant Covergirl Clump Crusher in brown-black. I like how it looks, but it flakes on me, although not as badly as the non-water-resistant one did. I only wear mascara occasionally, though, because I don’t wear makeup most days and I’m lucky enough to have naturally good eyelashes. I wear lipstick more than anything else.

    1. That’s really admirable! And your choice for your lone mascara is an excellent choice – in fact, I just finished a tube of that. I really love how it truly does NOT clump. I heard someone else say they had an issue with it flaking but I didn’t have that problem. I’m glad the water resistant version works better for you. I’m the opposite of you – I focus more on eye makeup since I need more help in that department! 😛

  9. I only have one opened mascara. Is it just me? I throw away mascara every 4-6 months whether they’re used up or not. I am soooo scared of infections. If I have multiple opened ones then I can’t tell which one infected me or irritated my eyes.

    1. I toss mascaras between 1 to 3 months usually! I’m scared of infections too! And I prefer fresh mascaras than dried up ones… I’m not TOO bad with having a bunch open. Right now I have 3 that I’m rotating through. I’ve tossed the red cap one aside!
The important question is: which mascara do you have open currently?

  10. Ok I think I need to give the Volume + Length version a try, I’m all about the volume!

I have to say I’m kind of turned off by the packaging – I find it looks like something you’d find at a dollar store or something. Not something that they just revamped…just my opinion tho! Probably why I’ve never even tried a Revlon mascara in my life! 🤔

    1. I think you’ll enjoy the Volume + Length – I’m all about the volume too!
The revamped mascara tubes look more in line with the rest of their packaging compare to their old mascara tubes which were all colourful and ombre. But yeah, I see what you mean about dollar store no name makeup – the simplicity of it can veer into that territory.

    1. I’m glad I’m not the only one. I saw so many rave reviews on it… maybe those people were sent the mascara for free to try? I hate mascaras that glue my lashes together – I want fluttery, separated lashes, not 3 hairs! 😆
