Nova Scotia Fisherman Xtreme Skin Care Haul

I blame this Nova Scotia Fisherman Xtreme Skin Care haul squarely on Dal of Little Beauty Loves! She mentioned this brand when she was on the MyLipAddiction.com Beauty Podcast, then she posted a blog post on it. Based on her rave recommendations, I had no choice but to place an order over the August long weekend:

First of all, you’re asking yourself, what the heck is Nova Scotia and why is a fisherman making skincare? I know, I thought the same thing! Well, not the first part because I know what Nova Scotia is. It’s a Canadian province on the east coast with the distinction of having a lot of seafood and a lot of lighthouses. ๐Ÿ˜› If you’re in the US, it’s close to Maine:

So, they have a lot of fishermen! (I have been to Nova Scotia, to their major city, Halifax – they have great food and lovely people!) And the ocean air wrecks havoc with your skin. But sea kelp to the rescue! Who knew sea kelp has all these benefits:

I knew I wanted to try out the signature items from the line, which are their lotion and lip balms. I was also curious about their bar soaps since Dal spoke so highly of the sea salt version. When I added the items to my cart, my total came to $38… but free shipping required a minimum of $50 spend!

The cost of shipping was $10 flat rate within Canada. I “had to” spend another $12 to get the free shipping… I mean, if you’re going to spend $10 anyway, why not on products? So I ended up getting the sea salt scrub as well! ๐Ÿ˜› I saved this comic for such an occasion:

I should mention here that shipping was super quick – it took only 4 days to arrive from the date of order! And each of the items were individually packaged to protect against leakage:

Here’s everything I bought:

Nova Scotia Fisherman Lotion – C$11.95 for 100ml
Nova_Scotia_Fisherman_skincare_10

Lip Balm Minnows – C$9.95 for 3 tubes (on sale from $15, flavours are Fisher-Mint, Sea Kelp, and Salt & Caramel)

Sea Salt Soap and Apple Cider Soap – C$7.95 each

I debated back and forth on which scent. Why choose, I say!

Salt n Sea Body Scrub – C$15.95

So far I’ve only tried the lip balm in Sea Kelp and the lotion. And I don’t know what I was expecting out of a sea kelp flavoured lip balm but oh my! It smells like pina colada and vanilla! And it has a thick emollient consistency – I’ve keptย the Sea Kelp lip balm on my desk and it’s been getting daily usage since I got it.ย It’s threatening to knock Dr. Hauschka off the top spot for my favourite natural lip balm!

As for the lotion, I expected something greasy and balm-like – but no, it is light and sinks in the skin quickly. It leaves a protective layer on the skin that I can feel even hours later. And again, not sure what I was expecting from the smell – what does sea kelp smell like? Apparently, it smells like shea. The lotion has a soft comforting scent that I love. I’ll been using this as a hand cream – thisย is a night-stand keeper! And I can definitely see myself getting the bigger size with the pump next time.

Nova Scotia Fisherman Xtreme Skin Care is available online and at health food stores all over. ย Thanks to Dal for introducing me to this niche Canadian brand. I really enjoyedย reading about how theyย got started and their business ethics – definitely a brand worthy of support. What are some brands that are niche and local to where you live that you enjoy? I’d love to hear about them!

    1. I’ll be trying the sea salt soap this week – my current bar of soap from Kiss My Face is just a sliver! ๐Ÿ˜›
I didn’t know this but their products are available at Noah’s, Whole Foods, and on well.ca! They don’t carry the full line like the online store but if you wanted to try a few items, you can definitely check those out!

    1. The apple cider is really nice! It’s a sweet apple but very natural. I’m saving that to use in the cooler months. I’ll be opening up the sea salt soap this week since I’m just finishing up my current bar of soap!
I was so surprised / impressed by the textures of both the lip balm and the lotion – much more refined than I thought they’d be! THUMBS UP! Thanks again for the rec! โค

    1. It’s definitely worth a look. I hadn’t heard of this line until Dal talked about it so much, it got me curious! I was glad I took the plunge. ๐Ÿ™‚

  2. I got a couple of their products from Topbox/Luxe Box, and am trying to use up a lip balm now! The packaging is pretty annoying (I’ll do a review at some point, lol) but it appears to be different from the normal lip balm packaging you got in your order. Hope you love your goodies!

    1. Yes I saw the lip balms in the stubby looking case where you have to push up the tube? I think those are the full size lip balms, whereas their trial sizes (the trio that I got) are like normal lip balm size. I suspect they had macho MEN in mind when they developed the lip balms and what salt of the earth man wants to wind up a tiny little tube like a LIPSTICK! ๐Ÿ˜†

  3. Ooh, this brand looks very intriguing. I was wondering if they are an authentically Nova Scotia brand, or at least Canadian, or if the brand just gave themselves an East Coast-related name, until you stated that they are indeed Canadian!
You’ve sold me on the lip balm! The puke green (okay, sea kelp) colour is interesting, but the scent sounds delish! The lotion sounds nice too. I’d be interested to know what you think of the scrub!
Just saw that a few grocery stores in town carry this brand…I definitely have to check it out soon!

    1. Yes, it’s authentic! I hate it when companies just slap on the name for sales! ๐Ÿ˜ฆ
I was surprised they’re so widely distributed and I’ve never heard of them – there are tons of stores that carry the brand around me as well. Now I know that I can stock up on a couple of items and don’t need to spend $50 for free shipping! ๐Ÿ˜†
I’ll probably get to the scrub later in the winter, I’ve been really delinquent on using my scrubs due to some skin sensitivities recently.

      1. I do too! Like it says it’s ‘Nova Scotia’ and it’s really made in Vietnam…
Yay for not having to worry about paying for shipping (btw, love that comic! It’s so true – if I had a $10 purchase and had to buy an extra $40 of products in order to get free shipping, versus paying for $5 shipping, I’d rather just get more products!)
Oooh, sorry to hear about the skin sensitivities. Can’t wait to hear about the scrub!

  4. Never thought I’d be into fisherman skincare, but it totally makes sense. They need some good stuff to protect their skin from the harsh conditions! I’ll check it out next time I’m at Whole Foods.

    1. It does make sense, now that we think about it huh! Definitely have a look – I love supporting small companies that make good stuff! I also really like how they give back to their community.

  5. Can you believe that despite being born and partially raised in Nova Scotia (ages 0 to 10), and having my parents move back there in 2000, that I’ve yet to try this brand! I nearly bought something from them the last time I was visiting my parents. Adding it to my list!

    1. I know, I was shocked it didn’t smell like… fish? Or seaweed? I hope you can find this at your local health food / wellness store. According to their store locator, they have quite a wide distribution network!
Just don’t EAT this stuff, ok? ๐Ÿ˜‰

      1. Unfortunately in Quebec, they have no retailers that carry the brand !!! Booooooo
You really got me when you said that you like it as much as Dr.Hauschka Lip care Stick (one of my fav)…
I might lick it a little bit !!!๐Ÿ˜‹
