Trash Stash: August 2016

It’s Trash Stash time again!

My empties were heavier on the skincare front this month.

Skinsceuticals Antioxidant Lip Repair $38 for 10ml
I wanted so much to love this but it was just a ‘meh’ product. I got this because of good reviews online, and I was also at some point feeling paranoid that I was getting lip wrinkles. 😛 This is a white lip cream – so imagine applying a face lotion onto your lips, that’s what it feels like. It wasn’t very hydrating and didn’t last long on my lips. Also, the pump was annoying – it dispensed way too much product a la MAC Pro Longwear Concealer. It’s expensive too.

Clarins Sun Wrinkle Control Eye Contour Care SPF 30 (discontinued)
I used to be really obsessed with finding an eye cream with SPF, but then I realized that none of them were hydrating enough on their own. So I’d have to layer a non-SPF eye cream underneath it as well. Nowadays, I just wear regular non-SPF eye cream and then apply my usual facial sunscreen on top. Works just as well.

La Roche-Posay Effaclar K – $14 for 400ml
I mentioned this in my last favourites and I’m so sad to have finished this because La Roche-Posay has discontinued this product in North America, for some reason. It was a great lightweight moisturizer for my t-zone. I’m thinking of trying Paula’s Choice BHA lotion in place of this.
Stash worthiness: 9/10     Repurchase: Maybe (online)

Mary Kay TimeWise® Age-Fighting Moisturizer Normal/Dry Skin – $35 for 88ml
This made onto my last favourites list as well and was a surprise hit. It is glycerin based and felt very lightweight – it’s mean for dry skin but I think those with really dry skin wouldn’t find this hydrating enough. It was great for my normal / combo skin. The tube is very sanitary and you get a lot of product for a fair price.
Stash worthiness: 9/10     Repurchase: Yes

Shiseido Benefiance Instant Treatment Eye Mask – $72 for 12 masks
I scored these from Winners and I have one more box left. When they’re gone, I will be sad. I’m debating if I would pay full price for them. I am using the Avene Ystheal Anti-wrinkle Emulsion which I really like.
Stash worthiness: 9/10     Repurchase: Maybe

Haircare

trash201608_5
Garnier Whole Blends Green Tea Green Apple Refreshing Shampoo – $8 for 370ml
This is a fantastic daily shampoo to clarify my hair and smells like fresh green apples. This was also a product from the favourites post.
Stash worthiness: 9/10     Repurchase: Yes

Nexxus Therappe Luxurious Moisturizing Conditioner – $14 for 400ml
I had the matching shampoo and my review is the same: I received this for free from a friend and it was ok. Smelled fine and didn’t weigh down my hair but I wouldn’t seek it out.
Stash worthiness: 6/10     Repurchase: No

Cake Beauty Satin Sugar Sweet Fuss-Free Volumizing Dry Shampoo
Did not care for this at all. It did not volumize my hair, nor did it make my hair look refreshed or de-greased. And to top it off, the smell was a nauseating fake sweet cake frosting. I much prefer Cake’s powder dry shampoo.

Bath & Body Works Waikiki Beach Coconut Hand Soap with Coconut Milk
This was a nice addition to the Waikiki Beach Coconut collection this year. I normally go for the foaming hand soaps from BBW but this one was a nice change. I noticed that it’s less drying than the foaming soaps. I’d definitely consider buying more of these hand soaps if BBW releases them again. For now I’ve got a couple left in my stash.
Stash worthiness: 9/10     Repurchase: Yes

Bath & Body Works Waikiki Beach Coconut Aloe Gel Lotion – $15.00 for 166ml
I bought this last year and it’s everything I wanted the Body Shop Body Sorbets to be – it’s hydrating, lightweight and smells amazing (unlike TBS’ version which isn’t hydrating at all). I still have a few tubes left of this that I’m rationing. BBW didn’t bring this product back this year, sadly!

empties2015Feb8
I made this awesome gif back in Feb of 2015 showing the ghost of my soap, so why not reuse it? 😉

Kiss my Face Naked Pure Olive Oil Bar Soap – $8 for 3-4oz bars
This is a staple in my stash – it’s a very gentle and soothing formula that leaves my skin soft and supple.

Shiseido UV Protective Compact Foundation SPF 36 in SP30 – C$35 for 12g
This is a fantastic powder to apply on top of foundation (sheerly) or as a powder foundation on its own. I took this with me to Japan and it was super handy to have SPF in powder form for touch-ups. This made a favourites list from last year. The compact is refillable so I will be keeping that and tossing the refill pan. When I repurchase, I may try one shade down as I find this one a touch orange looking.

CoverGirl Clump Crusher Lash Blast Mascara – C$10.99
This is my trusty standby for when I travel. It doesn’t provide the most dramatic lashes but it truly doesn’t clump on me so there’s no need to bring a lash comb with me. And it is really water resistant so no smudges onto the lower lash line. I always make a point to keep at least one CoverGirl Lash Blast Mascara in my rotation – you can check out my overview of CoverGirl Lash Blast mascaras here.
Stash worthiness: 9/10     Repurchase: Yes

Mary Kay Lash Primer – C$21
I used this once and never again. I’ve never seen anything uncurl my lashes like this! Review here. I’m keeping the brush to see if I can reuse it!
Stash worthiness: 1/10     Repurchase: No

Revlon All-in-One Mascara – C$10.99
This made my lashes stick together, and it irritated my eyes. I reviewed this, along with the Volume + Length Magnified version here. Get the other one instead.

Shishida Seishindo Metallic Mascara Comb
My poor lash comb has finally cracked after at least 5 years of use. It’s been a great tool and I’m glad I got back-ups of this (thanks Q, thanks C! ❤ ), even though there are so many great options available now, including Sephora’s (which I think is a copy of this one).  I raved about this lash comb here. I think I’m going to open up one of the lash combs I got in Japan.

Daiso Detergent Cleaning for Markup Puff and Sponge – ¥100 in Japan but C$6.50 from Ebay, for 80ml
This stuff is magical. It keeps my Beauty Blender type sponges looking brand spanking new. A small bottle like this easily lasts me 6 months and I use it 2-3 times per week. I only need a few drops to clean a sponge. I kind of wish I’d hauled more bottles of this when I was in Japan but space in my suitcase was premium real estate!

Samples / Travel Size

trash201608_11
Mary Kay Oil-Free Eye Makeup Remover – both pink bottles are the same product, MK just decided to change up the packaging of their gwp from the pink cap to the black cap version. Also, I didn’t finish both of these gwp sizes in one month. They were both about 2/3 finished since I took them on vacation or weekend trips with me. I do like this formula – it’s very effective but it does leave a silicone-y film on my skin. I always have to clean the residue with micellar water.

Kiehl’s Super Multi-Corrective Eye-Opening Serum – this is a very watery serum that I’ve been wearing underneath the Antipodes Kiwi Seed Oil eye cream. I wouldn’t buy the full size.
trash201608_12
Clinique Repairwear Sculpting Night Cream – didn’t care for this. It’s not rich enough to be called a night cream, in my opinion. And it didn’t sculpt nothing. The container of this gwp has a magician’s false bottom going on – the tub looks massive but only contains 15ml – there’s a LOT of empty air and plastic in this container!

Have you tried any of these products? How did you do with empties this month? 🙂

      1. I have a stash of Waikiki beach coconut hand soap I purchased in 2016 but the color turned brown. I was wondering if yours changed colors as well. I just took it out to use today and remembered the soap color was milky white.

        1. I just checked my stash and you’re RIGHT! Same thing with mine. I have 2 bottles of the hand soap in my stash and they’re now brownish colour! 😮 Not attractive… but I suppose they’re usable? This is what it looked like originally:

So odd! Did it smell ok?

  1. This is the weekend I tackle my empties. I can’t leave it longer than 4 months, I have 2 huge bags to go through!

That Body Sorbet sounds lovely from BBW, although I do like TBS ones as I don’t have very dry skin!

Let me know if you want me to try and hunt out the La Roche Posay if you’re struggling to get it, our collection here seems to be growing and it’s much easier to find in stores than it used to be!

    1. You live dangerously, don’t you. FOUR MONTHS? It’s going to take you HOURS to sort through everything!
The skin on my legs are quite dry so I do need something hydrating. I also found TBS sorbet to be gritty in texture – did you ever notice that?
I might just take you up on the La Roche Posay! So annoying they are continuing the product, just not offering to Canadians! 😛

  2. You always have SO many empties – so inspiring! I did finish up a couple of things recently but they’re not worth blogging about. (Yawn.)

I know everyone loves those CG mascaras, but I’ve tried a few and for some reason I just can’t get into them. I think it’s the plastic brush that doesn’t work well for me.

YES those sample tubs are sometimes so deceptive! They contain like 1/3 of what they look like they do – what a waste of packaging, as well.

    1. Yes, I can see why the CG plastic bristle brushes can be hard to get used to. If you are still curious about CG mascaras (for me, it’s not the wand that makes them so good, it’s the formula!) give either the Professional a try – it has normal bristles and is a great all rounder mascara.
I wish I had taken a photo of the Clinique gwp jar next to my Yves Rocher eye cream – both 15ml but the Clinique so much bigger! Those tricksters.
Save up your empties or take photos before they are thrown away and do a quarterly empties post! 🙂

      1. Funny you mention that, b/c CG Professional Waterproof is my longtime fave! I used it endlessly in the 90s/00s. Now I keep trying new ones but it really has stood the test of time 🙂

For some reason my lashes just slip right through the plastic bristles. It takes a zillion coats for me to get any mascara on with them.

  3. Teehee, yet another monthly empties that is bigger than my quarterly empties coming up in September!
Aww, I’m sad I missed out on the Waikiki Aloe Gel Lotion – had no idea they even had such a thing last year! Also interesting that the hand soap is less drying than the foaming ones, as I find that the foaming ones are less drying than their other hand soaps.
Holy cow, that Daiso sponge cleaner sounds AMAZING. We need something similar here!
The Kiehl’s eye serum sounded really intriguing, especially because of how awesome the Midnight Recovery Eye Cream is. I thought maybe they could go well together. What a disappointment!
This post reminded me that I have a bunch of Shiseido eye masks that were GWP’s that I still need to use up. I never knew how expensive they are!
Love the soap ghost gif, lol! What a great idea 😉

    1. Yes I do find the foaming hand soaps less drying compared to those anti-bacterial ones with the little beads inside. I guess the coconut milk in these ones make them more hydrating? I’m not sure.
And seriously, order the Daiso sponge cleaner online – it’s worth the extra effort. When I was in Japan I was some man stocking up on them, lol. I bet his wife sent him on that errand!
Try those Shiseido eye masks! They’re so effective, I was surprised!
I always felt bad for the bar soaps since they don’t get to be showcased in the empties (I’m certain I’ve finished some up and not even remember to post them) so hence ghost soap was necessary! 😆

  4. I just got into Shiesedo products and I’m in love, now that I see this post and took a peak at your past posts I can remember why I was so intrigued to try them! haha! I’m like OMG Stashy was totally in my head when I was at Shopper’s!

  5. Your trash is overwhelming … Still a mystery to me how you can have so much … Hummmm! maybe your SO is also a fan of the “petits pots de crème” !!!😋
I recently bought the Shiseido Foundation with SPF and I’m in love … I use it midday over my foundation because I’m often in the sun !!! Color selection is not great but it’s tolerable.

    1. Haha no the SO doesn’t dip into my skincare… at least, I don’t THINK! 😉
I should note down in my mini reviews how long each items lasted me – I used to be more diligent with that. I know that I wrote the date on the Mary Kay lotion – I started it in February, so that lasted me a whole 6 months!
I’m so happy you like that Shiseido foundation – it’s not perfect but it’s a great option since not many North American brands make something like that. I’m so excited that I picked up a few compact foundations from Japan that have SPF!

    1. There are some items I am fairly loyal to but it’s true, I like trying new things!
I don’t think I’ll ever tire of the Bath & Body Works Waikiki Beach Coconut scent! 😛 I’ve also been burning the matching candle!
