Project Pan 12 Autumn 2016: Sephora Jumbo Liner in Brown

This is week 1 of the Project Pan collab.  If you’re not familiar with Project Pan, please check out my post last week introducing the concept.

My first product is the Sephora Colorful Jumbo Liner 12 Hr Wear in 07 Brown:

I bought this back in 2012 during holiday Boxing week sale. It came in a box of 5 colours and cost me C$16 for the set.

The shade name of this is so boring! Just BROWN. It’s so much more than that. It’s a rich metallic chocolate brown with golden shimmers:

The formula is fantastic in that there’s the perfect balance between blendability while being long wearing. Some eye shadow pencils are really creamy and blends out well but they don’t last. On the flip side, some pencils are amazingly long wearing but the “open time” is so short you have to dab and speed blend in seconds.  Here’s what it looks like on the skin:

The sheered out swatch makes it look patchy but it’s really not, the primer I’m using (PUPA) is very dry and “clingy”.

Sephora describes the Jumbo Liner as:

A collection of jumbo eye pencils that can be used as eyeliners or blended out as eye shadows.

I disagree that these can really be used as eyeliners since the tip is so wide.  And it gets dull very quickly… and now I must confess something. I started this Project Pan weigh-in with the jumbo pencil like this:

On purpose! Because then I’d have to sharpen it for my very first use:

I used my trusty Slice Cosmetic Sharpener – it has openings for 3 different pencil size. To accommodate the Sephora Jumbo Liners, I needed to remove the inner ring of the bigger hole:

And voila, I “used up” a bunch of product in the form of pencil shavings:

😆 Can’t blame me for not trying!  I’m thinking though, that I’ll need to sharpen this pencil about once every third week since I’ve noticed that after just one week of use, it’s already getting dull again.  I don’t personally hate having to sharpen pencils but I know this might be an annoyance for some.

I like using a cream eye base in addition to an eye primer to help powder eye shadows to last longer, and look more pigmented.  I especially love to use a darker cream eye base underneath a lighter powder eye shadow to create interest and depth. Here’s a really typical Stashy shadow pairing:

MAC Patina on top of just about any dark brown base, makes me happy! 😀 Patina is also a Project Pan item!

At current count, the Sephora Jumbo Liner comes in 30 shades! MAC Paints and Paint Pots don’t even have that many colours. At C$18 each, they are certainly cheaper than other eye shadow pencils on the market like Laura Mercier Caviar Stick (C$35), Bobbi Brown Cream Shadow Stick (C$34), or Nars Velvet Shadow Stick (C$35).

I have 5 Sephora Colorful Jumbo Liner in my collection currently:

Can you tell that I use the Taupe shade the most?

My preferred finishes are the shimmer and the matte – they apply richly and smoothly.

I found the glitter finish to be a little chunky – I had a white glitter one but I purged it. Besides the 07 Brown shade, I recommend checking out 04 Taupe, and 05 Kaki (yes, this is how Sephora spells it!)

Look at how opaque that black is! That’s just with a single pass, not layered.

Pros:
• Pigmented
• Easy to blend
• Long wearing
• Wide range of colours
• Affordable

Cons:
• Inconsistency between finishes
• Requires sharpening

Stash worthiness: 9/10

Made in Germany like 99% of all cosmetic pencils. And apparently Sephora tested this on 36 women to verify the claim of lasting 12 hours? Wow, really. 🙄

I highly recommend the Sephora Colorful Jumbo Liners, but I suggest waiting for the holiday sets to come out, they’re much better value and you can get a bunch of colours to try. 🙂

Here’s how I’m doing with the rest of the Project Pan items:

The sharpening of the Sephora pencil really helped bring down its weight! 😆  I sighed with relief that I’m actually seeing some of the other numbers change! I used all of these items 5 days this week – these have become my “work week face”.  I’ll keep this up for the 12 weeks or until I get sick and tired of them! 😉

Two announcements!

  1. Please welcome the newest member to our Project Pan collab, Miss Chanelle! She will be starting next Monday, Sept 19th and continuing until the end of the project (end of Nov). 🙂
  2. However, I will be missing the next 2 updates for Project Pan because I’ll be away on vacation. Apologies in advance and I will do catch-up posts when I’m back! 😛

Have you tried the Sephora Colorful Jumbo Liners? What’s your go to jumbo eye pencil?

  1. This looks so pretty! I agree this shade is so much more than just brown, do they want to try people into not buying it! This combined with Patina looks stunning, I can only imagine how nice it looks on the eyes 😀 thank you for announcing me haha – glad to be on board!

    1. I wish they put more thought into the names of these, really!
I’m wearing this combo on my eyes today actually – brown as the base and Patina on top! I love the look.
So excited that you’re joining our collab! ❤

    1. Hehe, sharpening is kind of a cheat but ah well, there wasn’t any rules! 😉
Yes, there’s nothing worst than something that you love going bad or drying up before you had a chance to enjoy them! All of the items I chose for this Project Pan are things I really enjoy. Thanks for the support! 🙂

    1. I try to keep myself accountable. If I don’t keep on top of it, I can’t see if I’m using it up or not!
Definitely gather some stuff and join in! It’s a great way to use up some stuff that you love but don’t give enough attention to. My main fear is that some of these items will go bad or dry up before I get to enjoy them.

  3. Cheater!! Haha, just kidding – totally justified sharpening the pencil after! Awesome that you’re not just starting to use up this product, but some of the other ones too (although you’d never be able to tell with the naked eye).
This shade is so pretty…actually, they all are. Just look at that Taupe and Kaki!. Really going to have to keep my eye out for a set of these this Christmas! And Patina on top of Brown is PERFECTION, lol.

    1. I’m a TOTAL cheater! 😛 I did the same thing with the Lancome eye liner teehee! 😆
I think the powder products that don’t require a lot of product for each application, like the brow kit and the blush, will not show ANY change in the weight! I was seriously digging into my MAC eye shadows and it hasn’t changed!
Taupe and Kaki are gorgeous! I almost chose Taupe as my Project Pan item but it’s getting enough love. Yes, definitely keep your eye open for these. And they typically have them left over after the holidays on clearance sale too!

      1. It’s time to start applying your MAC eye shadows from your lash line all the way up to your brows, like Mimi from Seinfeld! That’s the only way you’ll get the weight to change!
Do you ever use Kaki? I have a few shadows that look very similar and they’re SO beautiful, but I never use them anymore!
It’s so easy to overlook Sephora brand makeup, even though they generally have high-quality products.

        1. LOL, that’s true, I need to bring back that trend. Or was it even a trend?!
I rarely use kaki. And if I do, I end up using a light tan shade on top to mute down the green. I just don’t think I can rock a straight up green eye.
It’s true, Sephora products are often overlooked but I’ve found lots of good items, and so much cheaper.

  4. These look really, really good. Sephora makes some really amazing products, but I haven’t had the pleasure of trying these…. Yet. Such a solid review. On to my never ending makeup list these go… Lol

  5. That’s a pretty eyeliner!

I think the photo of the pencil shavings is very artsy. I mean it! I can picture a handful of pseudo art lovers standing in front of your first ‘work of art’, discussing ‘the message the artist’s trying to send’…

  6. Lol “tested on 36 women” – most random test ever – that made me laugh.
Wow these look gorgeous and I’ve never even heard of them or seen them – or at least not paid attention to them in store. Definitely going to keep an eye out for their holiday set, they seem like they’d be great for travel.
Love that you’re weighing products for Project Pan – your attention to the details is impressive! 👍🏻
