PP12: Lancôme Khol in Love eye liner in Chocolate Affair

If you listened to the most recent MyLipAddition podcast, you would have heard me ranting about doing Project Pan! 😛 I remain committed to this cause, but I have to admit, wearing the same makeup day in, day out, is really challenging when you have so many other options staring at you! 😉

Today’s review is an item that is actually discontinued:

The Lancôme Khol in Love eye liner in 101 Chocolate Affair was released as part of the Spring 2013 In Love collection, which featured lovely Emma Watson:

I only picked up the eye liner from the collection, mainly due to glowing reviews from RAEviewer (oh, the power of beauty gurus). But, I was pleased to have picked this one because I love this liner! And I’m really bummed that it was a limited edition formula.

First, I should address the spelling of “Khol” in the name. That’s how Lancôme spelled it. The proper way is “Kohl”. But I guess it’s creative license by the peeps at Lancôme. 😉

It’s just a classic pencil liner, but the formula simply works with my eyes. I mainly wear pencil liners on my lower lash line – for my upper lash line, I prefer a liquid or gel liner. Some pencil liners are really buttery smooth when I apply them, but they don’t stay put, or they tend to fade through the day. I’ve tried countless liners from all the popular ones (Urban Decay, MAC, NYX etc) but this Lancome Khol in Love is one of my all time favourites. Let’s compare some liners from my stash:

Note that I primarily use brown eye liners. I just don’t like the harshness of black on me. I wear brown, taupe, grey and sometimes navy but rarely straight black liners. I chose brown / grey non-shimmery liners for comparison:

L to R:
Dolly Wink Pencil Eyeliner in Brown
Shu Uemura Drawing Pencil in M Dark Brown 83
Kat Von D Autograph Liner in Immortal Love
Lancôme Drama Liqui-Pencil Longwear Eyeliner in Pluie
Lancôme Khol in Love in Chocolate Affair
Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil in Smokeout
NYX Slide On Pencil in Brown Perfection
Avon SuperShock in Intense Brown
MAC Powerpoint in Stubborn Brown

Yes, I have a slight problem with collecting eye liners too. 😛

Every pencil applies smoothly – the most gel-like are Shu Uemura and Avon SuperShock – they almost feel like liquid.

Here is the smudge test – I let the liners dry for about 5 minutes before smudging them. The top portion is smudged across with a cotton bud dipped in oil (to mimic my oily eyes!) and the bottom portion is smudged just with a dry cotton bud (to mimic rubbing).  Look at how the Shu Uemura, both Lancômes and the Avon just do NOT budge!  I will say though, having worn all of them, my preferred formulas are the Shu Uemura and Lancômes – I find the Avon to be really smeary and actually migrates onto my eyeballs. 😮

This is me rubbing cleansing oil to remove the swatches – that Shu Uemura just refuse to quit! 😮

Sadly, the Lancôme Khol in Love eye liner itself is drying out and has shrunk away from the wooden casing:

This was a recent phenomenon – when I went to sharpen it (for the 3rd time since starting Project Pan!), the lead fell right out! It’s still usable but I will toss this liner at the conclusion of Project Pan, since I do have many other liners that I can use.

The Lancôme Khol in Love eye liner is made in Germany (as is most other eyeliners) and nearly all of the ones shown above are also made in Germany, even the Shu Uemura. The one exception is Dolly Wink, which is made in Japan.

I forgot to take a photo of the pencil on the scale… but it went down a bit from a recent sharpening:

After:

When I started the project, the pencil measured 9.8cm, it is now 8.3cm.

As usual, the items that showed changes in their weigh were the base products – the foundation and powder:

What’s your favourite pencil eye liner?

  1. Who knew brown eye liners came in so many colours haha, they do all actually look diferent, staying power of the other lancome one looks good, I’ll have to take a look at the other colours in that range! How annoying that it fell out!
I may do a black liner comparison like you’ve done and see which ones I can toss, I have so many of them and I rarely use a pencil liner any more!

    1. Not all browns are created the same! Same with black. I’d love to see swatches of your black liners. You’d probably surprise yourself with which ones are worth keeping. I plan to probably purge 4 out of the 9 shown here.
When a liner falls out of the casing, it’s tell me, “Stashy, why you neglect me?” 😦

    1. Oh yes, you’re right, the eye shadow did go down too. I’ve been really digging into them, especially the shade Patina – I love that colour!
The only thing I’d say about the Shu Uemura eye liner is that it’s VERY liquidy so it can be a bit smudgy before it sets. But when it sets, it is like permanent marker! 😮

  2. I also only use brown pencils! It’s rare for me to use black liner or black mascara ^^

This post was awesome! I also have been enjoying the Holika Holika liners for staying power. If I don’t use my balm cleanser to remove them, it’s hard to get it all off!

    1. I do use black mascaras but only brown liners – it’s SO tough to find brown liquid liners!
Oh I’ve not tried the Holika Holika liners, I will have to investigate! I found it interesting that even the Shu Uemura liner was made in Germany whereas the lone Dolly Wink was made in Japan. I’d be curious to try more liners made in Japan or Korea.

      1. I agree it’s hard to find good brown liquid liners. They’re more common in AB products though, I noticed! I use the Dolly Wink liquid liner in brown and I also use the Etude House liquid liner in brown. I heard the Clio liquid liner in brown is very long wearing so I will try that one next!

        1. Yes, I have the Clio liner on my wish list! I’ve heard amazing things about it! I had the Dolly Wink liner in brown but it’s too watery for me – I have to go over the line a few times to get it to be opaque. Right now I’m using K-Palette liquid liner in brown and it’s great!

          1. Ahhh! You know, after using the Dolly Wink liner for a while, I noticed that it doesn’t apply as dark as I want it to because of my eyeshadow – it really picks it up and ends up on the brush and then I don’t get as dark of a line. I’ll keep in mind that K-Palette liner, that brand is never even on my radar!

  3. The wear on that Shu liner is SHOCKING! haha. It’s sometimes hard to find a pencil liner that doesn’t fade in the eye area – I have this problem in the lower lash line, even if I set it with an eye shadow.

Hehe, you must be dying to use products that are outside of your Project Pan 12!

    1. Yesss, I’ve been making an effort to try new products on the weekends but I don’t wear much makeup on the weekends so it’s still not as satisfying!

I know, that Shu liner is made of industrial paint or something? I was astounded. I’m thinking I need to get rid of my other liners and get more colours of the Shu instead.

  4. SO. MANY. BROWN. LINERS. I can sorta see why you have them though, they’re all slightly different shades of brown. Personally, I don’t wear eyeliner, I’m just crap at applying it basically. I bought a Rimmel one earlier this year and 99% of the time forget I own it. It’s brown but I don’t know if it would be better in black… I like how my eyes look without eyeliner anyway 🙂

    1. There is really no reason why I have so many brown eye liners! These aren’t even ALL the ones I own! 😆 I just am always curious if there’s something better out on the market. Although, I will say that the Shu Uemura and Lancome Liqui-pencil are both new to my collection and they last the longest of the bunch! So there’s something to be said about the new eye liner technology! 😛
Eye liners are personal preference – I feel really bare without it. I only wear it for work or if I’m going out.

  5. SO many taupe-brown eyeliners!!!! 😀

I love Lancome’s pencil products (Le Lipstique is SO gorgeous) but I always have a hard time sharpening them.

Maybe khol is a French spelling? No idea. I always wondered why some brands spell it kohl, and others khol.

    1. I hadn’t thought about the French spelling of kohl… I just typed it in google translate and yes, “khôl” is the French spelling. Well then I ask, why is it “khôl in love” not “khôl l’amour” hrm hmmm! 😛 😉
I have my eye on the new Lancôme Grandiôse bendy liquid liners – I was so psyched that they offer it in BROWN!

  6. It’s so sad when great products are discontinued or limited edition! My favourite pencil liner is Urban Decay’s 24/7 Eye Liner in Demolition! It’s a matte dark brown shade.. I looove it! Though, I haven’t been wearing eye liner much lately… Just have been smudging eye shadow under my eye and I’ve been happy with that look!

    1. I like smudging eye shadow on top of liners – it really helps both to stay put on my lash line! I also sometimes like to pair lighter shimmery eye shadows with dark liners – makes an interesting effect. I guess having thing discontinued means we keep hunting for a replacement (ie shopping!).
