PP12: MAC Eye Shadows in All That Glitters, Patina, Satin Taupe, Romp

Yay, it’s finally a focus on the MAC eye shadow quad! 😀 I’m not supposed to pick a favourite out of my Project Pan items (because the other items would get jealous) but I’m going to admit that I love these eye shadows just a teeny tiny more. Shhhh. 😉

This is a MAC Pro Palette that I chose each colour myself, they are: All That Glitters, Patina, Satin Taupe, Romp:

Sadly, Romp is discontinued. But the other 3 are still readily available!

Here are the official MAC descriptions for each shade:
All That Glitters: Beige w/gold pearl [Veluxe Pearl]
Patina: Taupe brown w/golden pearl [Frost]
Satin Taupe: Taupe with silver shimmer [Frost]
Romp: Chocolate laced with gold [Frost]

I don’t think the MAC descriptions are all that accurate for All That Glitters and Patina.  All That Glitters is more of a peachy pink shade, not beige. And Patina is more of a sandy beige rather than a taupe.  Each of these 4 colours appear on my Top 10 MAC eye shadow list – so that tells you how much I love them!

It was tempting to do some comparison swatches (especially of Patina and Satin Taupe, since I likely own 3 dupes for them each) but I’ll save that for another post. 😉

Even within this quad, I do have slight preference for Patina and Satin Taupe over the other 2 colours. Most days I use Patina on the inner half of the lid, and Satin Taupe on the outer half.  It would be remiss if I do not mention MAC Wedge in this post, since I incorporate it as part of my daily look as the transitional shade to blend out along the crease.

I should also mention that the MAC Pro Palette I use to house these 4 refill pan shadows is the older style, on the left:

I actually prefer the older style empty palette as they’re slimmer and more compact.

Last week, I achieved what I thought was never going to happen: I hit pan on PATINA!  That was one of the first MAC eye shadows I ever bought.  I think this is the first time I ever hit pan on a full-sized eye shadow! OMG! 😮  This is what it looked like when I hit pan last week:

And this is what is looks like now:

MAC Pro Palette eye shadow refills cost C$8 ($6 USD) each (which is a fairly recent price drop, before March 2016, they used to cost C$12 / $10 USD each).  And the empty 4-pan compact costs C$10 (I think they used to cost double that!)

And the eye shadows went down again this week (I have really been digging into these lately):

But, do not fear, since I have back-ups of all the colours except for All That Glitters. 😆

Annoyingly, the Cargo face powder hasn’t gone down again this week:

If you could create the perfect quad out of any 4 eye shadows (any brand), what would you choose?

  1. I have all that glitters and satin taupe and I really like them but I need to motivate myself to use them more. I really ummed and ahhed about patina but in the shop it looked a bit yellowy? I’ve almost finished up an entire woodwinked and I’ve got a replacement for my pro palette and the consistency definitely feels different so i’m quite sad! It’s nowhere near as pigmented! xxx

    1. I can see how Patina could appear slightly yellow depending on your skin tone since it does have yellow shimmer. But it also has a greyed / pinky tone as well. It’s such a nuanced, complex shade – maybe give it another chance next time you’re at MAC! Woodwinked was one of those colours I HATED initially. I actually gave my first Woodwinked away because the orange under tone made me look sickly. I did end up repurchasing it to try it again. Now, I know not to blend it up too much beyond my crease and to tone the orange down with a cooler matte transition shade. Oh yes, I have noticed inconsistencies between the older MAC and new ones – it’s really sad, isn’t it!

      1. Oh good to know about Patina being similar to Magic Mushroom. It’s one shade on my “wish list” that I know I’ll never get and forever wonder about. Glad Patina is still readily available!

  2. Love love love the colors!! Its one damn good looking quad!! Im too indecisive to make my ultimate eye shadow quad – that would be a real struggle. There’s a reason why i have the same item (from clothes to little knickknacks) in different colors..

    1. I have a few MAC 4 pan custom palettes and there are other colours that I really like a lot too, and I’m sure I could live with them. But these 4 are probably desert island material!
I do like buying different colours of the same thing! I found a cut of pants I really like from Express and I bought them in 8 different colours! LMAO.

    1. It’s crazy to think that we haven’t hit pan on eye shadows even though we use it all the time. I’m going to try to hit pan on MAC Wedge as well, since I use it so often. That’s going to be my next personal challenge!

  3. I can see why this is your favourite item from your Project Pan, it’s definitely the most fun! And YAY for hitting pan on Patina! *throws confetti*
Patina is on my list of the next eye shadows to buy from MAC. With All That Glitters, I like the shade itself, but I find that it doesn’t really show up on my skin tone that well. And of course I have been absolutely loving Satin Taupe.
Hmm, I haven’t really thought about what shades would be in my ‘perfect quad’ palette, but I know Urban Decay’s Sin would be in it!

    1. Yay! **let’s confetti rain down on me**
I agree, All That Glitters looks more interesting swatched than on my eyes – it mostly shows up as frost. But I like it paired with both Satin Taupe and Romp – I put it on the inner 1/3 because it can get out of hand with the frostiness.
I keep thinking I own UD Sin but I don’t. Hmm I wonder if it’s similar to MAC Jest?

  4. I was about to say, oh wow romp that’s a colour I want to get from Mac. God damn it! I have patina but it’s been a long time since I reached for it and I think I may have had all that glitters in the past but totally finished it up. I don’t tend to buy Mac shadows any more they’re so expensive here even buying single pans are £10, compared to 5usd or what ever it is, so unfair! I’d have to seriously think an eyeshadow colour is unique to buy it from Mac, i much prefer makeup geeks formula and it’s cheaper! Woodwinked is probably my favourite Mac shade.
Well done on hitting pan, you’re so close to being free of jail!

    1. I tried to find a dupe for Romp when I learned it was discontinued. It looks so “common” but a lot of eye shadows in that colour family are very orange toned. I ended up finding a back-up of the original online instead. 😛
What a rip off deal you have there. It’s $8 CAD for single pan now (ooh I should update my post to add prices – thanks for that reminder!). $8 CAD converts to £4.8! For me though, MUG is more expensive compared to MAC (converts to $9 CAD), not to mention shipping.
Yeah, so close to being FREE again to use my other makeup. This weekend I finally played around with the Shu Uemura palette that I bought in JULY for my birthday LMAO.

    1. Oooh your quad sounds fantastic! I’ve been eyeing those ABH singles. I’ve swatched a few of them and they feel lovely. I’m toying with the idea of redeeming my $20 off $50 coupon that Sephora has in December for VIB members toward a customer ABH quad. A filled ABH quad with the empty palette costs C$54! It’s a bit pricier than MAC’s (a filled MAC custom compact including the case is C$42) but I’m always game to try new eye shadows! And getting $20 off doesn’t hurt.

  5. I have only hit pan on one MAC shadow – can you guess which one? A notorious transition shade!! Actually, considering how many eye shadows I have because you know I’m weird, it’s the ONLY shadow I have ever actually hit pan, ran out, and replaced. Guess that shadow!

    1. Isn’t it crazy to think that we’ll never use up an eye shadow? I’d love the idea of just sticking to a handful of colours forever, but we all know that’s impossible!

  6. 🎉 Congratulations on hitting the pan on patina.

That MAC person naming the shade must have some serious colour issues 😂

I also prefer the older, slimmer MAC pan. Mine doesn’t have see through lid. The lid is black. I like your one better. Those new ones are so weirdly ‘fat’.

      1. I just got home and started to unpack my stuff… that’s when I realised that I should probably join you on the project pan quest. I can’t stop buy/try new beauty products >_< my stash can no longer be contained by my allocated boxes

  7. The four shades in your quad look like the perfect combination! They are all so beautiful and wearable for a range of looks and people with varied skintones. Can I ask how long you’ve had these shades/this quad for? 🙂

    1. I’ve had Patina and Satin Taupe for at LEAST 8 years! 😮 Isn’t that terrible? I know they say makeup expire blah blah but powders are FINE. I sanitize my makeup every so often and no one else but me uses my makeup.

    1. I have such a soft spot for MAC. Especially old MAC. The new LE stuff isn’t as appealing to me anymore – I guess my tastes have changed. The MAC refill pans are only $8 each so they’re really affordable!

  8. Great job at hitting pan! I am impressed and still thing this is an awesome idea. I wish I would’ve joined you so I could used up some products. Now that I know what kind of eyeshadow you like….expect a thank you soon with more pans to hit bottom on!

    1. Oh you! Are you trying to make our husband, Cat, jealous? 😉
Hitting pan on eye shadows is more challenging than I first imagined. This took YEARS. But again, I switch up my eye shadows almost daily. Now that I’m done Project Pan, I don’t even want to look at these colours for a WHILE.

      1. I don’t know how I would manage project pan. I switch palettes daily. lol I finally hit pan on one shade in my UD Naked Basics palette after 3yrs. You caught me…..doesn’t take much to make the hubby jelly. 😂

  9. I go away for 3 months and my feed is full of like a million project pans from you guys! How exciting, haha! I love how you actually weight your progress. That way you can “see” it even when you can’t “see” it.

    1. You gotta join us for next Project Pan! I’m going to try to find an even better scale next time – like a micron scale so it can detect every little bit of change with the products. 😆
