Blogmas 2016: Chit Chat Tuesday – Do You Regift?

I haven’t done a Chit Chat Tuesday in ages and I miss them!

Today’s chat is a quick one: What are your thoughts on the practice of regifting?

Personally, I’m not against it. If a gift you received isn’t something you’d use, why not pass it onto someone else who might?  I’ve regifted especially food / alcoholic items that we just receive too much of – they’re generic enough that they won’t raise red flags. And conversely, I’m certain that I’ve received presents that were regifts. I didn’t mind since I was able to use the items that I received. Isn’t it the thought that counts? 😉

Here’s a quick list of what I feel is regiftable:

• Box of chocolates / cookies
• Wine or alcohol of any sort
• Unused bath & body care items (hand cream, shower gel – those gift sets that your aunt grabbed at the Body Shop)
• Generic vase / bowl / tea set / crystal figurines

These are NOT regiftable:

• Underwear / socks
• Clothing of any sort (unless you donate it to a charity)
• Jewellery
• Books
• Family heirloom / antique items
• Personalized items: engraved box with your name on it, embroidered monogram handkerchief
• Handmade items: the gifter knitted / crocheted / découpaged the present with their own two hands! Just stuff the gift in the back of your closet for the next 20 years or until the gifter passes away, whichever is first…

Of course, the trick is to regift to a different social circle (family, friends, work) than the one in which the gift originally came from!

What are your thoughts on regifting? Have you ever regifted, or suspected that someone gave YOU a regifted present? Sound off in the comments!

  1. I think regifting presents is fine. I might not like a certain gift, but the next person could love it.

Sure, you can’t regift personalised items, but I think all those standard gifts are perfectly regiftable (Is this a word? If not, then it is now?). It’s all about keeping track of who gifted what. 😉

So yeah, I agree with everything you said!

    1. Yes, regiftable is a word! I wasn’t even sure if regift is a proper work or if it should be hyphenated. But it’s a common enough notion that it’s officially a word! 😛

I read that one of the strategies of regifting is to put a sticky note on the gift to note down who gave it to you. That way, you can keep track and not make the fatal mistake of regifting too “close to home”. 😉

  2. Give re-gifted a few times. One year a coworker got me a basket of vanilla scented body stuff. Sadly I can’t stand vanilla scented bath stuff, so I re-gifted it to a friend, who LOVED it.

      1. One time my mom was given a gift card to a restaurant she didn’t care for. She gave it to me because she knew I liked eating there & would put it to use.

  3. I 100% agree with your “policies” on regifting! I do it too, although I try not too. Alcohol is high on the list of things I regift, since I don’t drink and my fiancé rarely drinks at home. I also regift body care, although if it’s a scent I intensely dislike (re: our conversation about Japanese Cherry Blossom), I will not regift it as I assume that like recipient doesn’t want to smell like a granny either. I have also regifted unused gift cards, too, if I am in a pickle and they are generic enough like Cadillac Fairview/Visa/MC gift cards.

What, you don’t want a necklace that says “Rachel” on it?? 😛

PS: I miss your Chit Chat Tuesdays too!

    1. When I was a teenager my friends and I would go to Value Village to thrift shop. I scored a golf tee that had some random girl’s name on it (I can’t remember it now…) and I wore it to be ironical. 😛
Yes, we get a ton of wine and we don’t drink very much either! We often regift them… But yes, the BBW Mahogany Woods is not regiftable. We have either been donated to charity or simply tossed. I checked last night and we have one lingering bottle of shower gel still!
Oooh you must have been desperate to regift gift cards! That’s like MONEY. 😮

  4. Great post! I don’t think I’ve ever re-gifted and its not something I would really want to do. There are definitely some things that could be regifted and I agree with the ideas you said like the body gift sets definitely. Although If I was to regift I would make it part of a present, part of me would be rather uncomfortable I think just giving away something someone else gave me!

    1. I guess it depends on how big / significant the present is that I’m regifting – I might add something else if the regift is small. There are sometimes those people who insists on giving a present to me even though we’re not that close! Those are the times when regifing is a saviour.

  5. Like you I’m not opposed to re-gifting, but it’s not my first choice. You never know how many times a gift may have been passed on and it’s only if something really doesn’t suit me or there’s something I wouldn’t use that I’d consider passing it along.

  6. I’m not opposed to re gifting or receiving a re gifted present. If I was going to do it though I would add another personal present along with it. I have trouble with keeping to much stuff that doesn’t get appreciated so if I can forward a gift to someone else that I know will appreciate it better I would do that. I wouldn’t do anything handmade or anything that they wouldn’t want though

    1. You’re so thoughtful! Sometimes regifting happens if I’m desperate for a gift and I just grab whatever box of cookies / chocolates we received. Yes, homemade / personalized items can never be regifted!

    1. Red wine – ME TOO. I don’t like red wine but we seem to receive it more than anything else.
Haha, we have no worries because we never invite people over to our place. 😉
I’ve got a few topics already in draft mode for Chit Chat Tuesday! Will definitely get back into it…

  7. I think I’ve probably done it a couple of times, especially with alcohol as I don’t drink, but only with nice and generic things. Most of the time if I don’t like a present, or more often it’s part of a present, I see if there’s someone know know who wants it. There have been a couple of years when me and my sister swapped a couple of things if we got similar presents but the scents were the wrong way round if that makes sense.

    1. Swapping with a close relative (sisters are perfect for this!) is totally acceptable! I used to do it too with my sister since we had polar opposite in taste and often what I disliked, she loved!

    1. I think she meant you shouldn’t re-gift something that someone has taken the time to hand-make for you. It’s rude! I think it’s nice that you are knitting things for your family. One of my most cherished possessions is a blanket a friend hand knitted for my son when he was a newborn 😀

      1. I love knitting stuff for friends’ babies. I try to steer away from clothes but it’s so difficult (they’re so cute!). I do wonder what the parents do when the kids outgrow the items.

        1. Actually, unless my boys have totally destroyed a clothing item I keep them all. There are people out there who take children’s clothes and turn them into patchwork quilts and that’s what I plan to do with them 😀

  8. OMG I love that you included things you should NOT regift, lol. The necklace literally made me laugh out loud. That would for sure be a fail. I’m with you though, I don’t see anything wrong with regifting something you won’t use or don’t need as long as it’s something that is nice. For example, you get a candle and don’t like the scent? Regift. You have a coffeepot you were given 3 years ago and have never used? Past it’s prime. Donate it instead.

    1. Haha, I was actually trying to create a necklace that read “Stashy” but none of the fonts were convincing enough. 😛
Candles – yes! That is a perfect item for regifting! I shall add it to the list. 😀 Yes, OLD stuff is no good for regifting. Unless of course, it’s vintage then it’s cool again.

  9. Hehe I always feel so guilty re-gifting but I have done it with edibles and bath & body products. I was watching something the other day and they were speaking about this very topic and someone told a story about how they gifted someone a bottle of wine and the next year, that person regifted them said bottle. *facepalm* awkward…

    1. Oh I missed this comment from December.. Yes for sure with edibles and bath products.
Haha, that’s hilarious. That wine just gets passed back and forth… forever! 😆

  10. I think its perfectly acceptable to regift items you won’t use. Maybe someone else would love to have that gift. It does, however, put you in an awkward position if the gifted finds out you regifted. What would your response be if they confronted you about it?
