Two Face Creams Face Off: The Body Shop Vitamin E Nourishing Night Cream and MAC Studio Moisture Cream

I didn’t really know how to name this post – but basically, I’ve been using two new nighttime face creams recently.  The first one, I started using and reacted badly to, and the second was to the rescue.
face_creams_bodyshop_mac_2
Can you guess which was which?

If you’d guessed The Body Shop Vitamin E Nourishing Night Cream as the one I reacted to, you’d be correct!
face_creams_bodyshop_mac_3
And if you had asked me to guess which would be the “bad” cream at the beginning, I personally would have guessed MAC. I mean, The Body Shop (TBS) is known for good skincare, right? They’re soothing and full of good ingredients… right? MAC is a makeup brand, not a skincare brand! 😕

“Rich yet easily absorbed night cream that protects, replenishes and helps prevent moisture-loss overnight.”

The first thing that struck me about TBS Vitamin E Night Cream is the scent. It is so overwhelming – the best I can describe it is synthetic floral bathroom fragrance spray – and lingers for quite a while after application.
face_creams_bodyshop_mac_6
Texture-wise, it has a slightly whipped, airy consistency which makes for easy blending and absorption.
face_creams_bodyshop_mac_13
It leaves the skin feeling hydrated but not looking overly greasy. I wanted to like this! So why did this not work me?
face_creams_bodyshop_mac_7
After about a week of using this I noticed that I was getting clogged pores on my cheeks which is unusual since I am the driest there (I have combination, dehydrated, sensitive skin). After another week, I suspected the culprit was this cream and I finally examined the ingredients – I noticed that “Triticum Vulgare Germ Oil” is the third ingredient. I wasn’t familiar with that oil and it turns out it’s Wheat Germ Oil. I looked it up and learned that wheat germ oil is one of the most comedogenic oils around! 😳

Very few people can tolerate the use of wheat germ oil as it is an almost guaranteed breakout when applied topically. It’s sad because it has some of the best scar reducing and healing properties of any oil due to its very high Vitamin E content. However, such high levels are what give it its comedogenic rating. Use this oil at your own risk!

Source.

I stopped using this on my face and voila,  no more clogged pores. I have not noticed wheat germ oil in my skincare before and now I have it etched in my brain to avoid it.  Why would TBS use such a high concentration of such a comedogenic oil for a face cream?! I checked the ingredient list on my beloved TBS Vitamin E Toner and it does also list wheat germ oil, but much lower on the ingredient list – perhaps that’s why I did not have an adverse reaction to it. I should note that TBS Vitamin E Night Cream has decent reviews in general (3.8 out of 5 on MakeupAlley, with 69% who would repurchase, 152 reviews), so it might work for those with very dry skin.  Here’s the full ingredient list:

Aqua/Water/Eau, Glycerin, Triticum Vulgare Germ Oil/Triticum Vulgare (Wheat) Germ Oil, Dimethicone, PPG-2 Myristyl Ether Propionate, Stearyl Alcohol, Isododecane, Cetearyl Alcohol, Theobroma Cacao Seed Butter/Theobroma Cacao (Cocoa) Seed Butter, Myristyl Myristate, Glyceryl Stearate, PEG-100 Stearate, Cetearyl Ethylhexanoate, Panthenol, Hydrogenated Tetradecenyl/Methylpentadecene, Phenoxyethanol, Caprylyl Glycol, Tocopheryl Acetate, Carbomer, Parfum/Fragrance, Benzyl Benzoate, Sodium Hydroxide, Sodium Hyaluronate, Disodium EDTA, Hydroxycitronellal, Geraniol, Linalool, Limonene, Alpha-Isomethyl Ionone, CI 14700/Red 4, CI 19140/Yellow 5.

face_creams_bodyshop_mac_5
Another thing to note: the cream is tinted slightly pink, and contains CI 14700/Red 4 and CI 19140/Yellow 5 colourants, which I feel is unnecessary for a face cream.  TBS Vitamin E Nourishing Night Cream retails for C$22 for a 50ml jar. It is made in the UK. I purchased it back in July, and started using it in mid-October and stopped in early November.

Pros:
• Light texture for easy absorption
• Provides good hydration
• Inexpensive

Cons:
• Strong, overpowering fragrance
• Wheat germ oil high on ingredient list – very comedogenic
• Caused clogged pores
• Contains colourants

Stash worthiness: 4/10

I attempted to use this up on my hands / feet at nighttime and my SO would have none of it – the scent offended him so much – I have not heard such a strong objection from him before! 😮  So, it’s into the bin with this cream.

face_creams_bodyshop_mac_8
After the letdown with TBS Vitamin E cream, I was a little hesitant to try the MAC Studio Moisture Cream. I mean, MAC isn’t well-known for their skincare, but I suppose I was curious enough to buy this back in August, so I might as well just give it a go.
face_creams_bodyshop_mac_9
And to my surprise, I really like this cream.

face_creams_bodyshop_mac_11
I appreciate that both TBS and MAC have the inner lid – I always keep them throughout the usage of the cream. Do you keep the inner lid or toss them once you open the product?

The cream is lightweight and feels silky smooth on the skin. Its texture remind me a bit of mayonnaise – but in a good way! 😛
face_creams_bodyshop_mac_14
Compared to TBS Vitamin E Night Cream, this one did leave a slightly shiny finish to the skin. The smell of this cream is subtle (the best I can describe it is clean, like toner) and not at all offensive.
face_creams_bodyshop_mac_12
The only slightly annoying thing is the packaging: the lid has a rubberized finish so it’s a magnet for every little thing.

face_creams_bodyshop_mac_18
“Smooth over clean face and throat. Use day or night, under makeup or alone.”

The key ingredients are glycol (humectant), silicone, and Aleurites Moluccana Seed Oil (kukui nut / candlenut oil). Then there are a bunch of extracts that are antioxidants, hyalouronic acid, and even caffeine – I was surprised to see these ingredients in a MAC cream – this is anything but a basic cream.

Water Purified, Butylene Glycol, Dimethicone, Caprylic/Capric/Stearic Triglyceride, Myristyl Myristate, Cetyl Esters, Ethylhexyl Palmitate, Aleurites Moluccana Seed Oil, Passiflora Alata Fruit Extract, Hordeum Vulgare Extract, Wheat Germ Extract, Spinach Leaf Extract, Camellia Sinensis Leaf Extract, Coconut Extract, Hypnea Musciformis Extract, Gellidiela Acerosa Extract, Saccharomyces Lysate Extract, Caffeine, Tocopheryl Acetate, Retinyl Palmitate, Squalane, Sodium Hyaluronate, Carbomer, Sodium Carbomer, Sodium Stearoyl Lactylate, Acrylamides Copolymer, PEG/PPG-18/18 Dimethicone, Polyglyceryl-10 Pentastearate, PEG-100 Stearate, Cyclopentasiloxane, Glyceryl Stearate, Polyperfluoromethylisopropyl Ether, Behenyl Alcohol, Fragrance, BHT, Tetrasodium EDTA, Phenoxyethanol, Methylparaben, Propylparaben

face_creams_bodyshop_mac_17
The MAC Studio Moisture Cream sells for C$40 for 50ml which I think is still quite reasonable for a face cream. It is made in the USA. On MakeupAlley, users rate this 4.2 out of 5, with 78% who would repurchase out of 57 reviews.
face_creams_bodyshop_mac_10
This cream was the ideal one for the Autumn to Winter transition – we had a very mild December so I was able to use this all the way from November until the beginning of January, at which point I went back to my trusty Shiseido Bio-Performance Advanced Super Revitalizing Cream for more intense hydration. This cream is marketed as suitable for either day or night and I would agree – I will be using the MAC cream for daytime once I finish my Antipodes Vanilla Pod Hydrating Day Cream.

Pros:
• Light silky texture for easy absorption
• Provides good hydration
• No offensive smell
• No reaction
• Reasonably priced

Cons:
• May not be hydrating enough for very dry skin
• Rubberized lid

Stash worthiness: 8/10

Another great thing about this cream? Once I empty it, I will save the jar for Back to MAC! It got me thinking… I should use more MAC skincare products. It’s so much easier to finish up skincare than makeup – and then I can trade them in for a free lipstick or eye shadow! 😉

Here’s a quick side by side comparison and swatches between the 2 creams:
face_creams_bodyshop_mac_15

face_creams_bodyshop_mac_16
The whipped texture of the TBS Vitamin E cream is apparent here, as is the silkier texture of the MAC Studio Moisture cream.

So here’s a case where my expectations and outcomes got switched around – it just goes to show, I can’t assume anything. Have you ever tried a product expecting to love it but didn’t, or vice versa?

  1. That’s a shame about the TBS one, I used it for a while and it worked for me but my skin is very dry in parts. One thing I got and wasn’t expecting to love was the tonymoly appletox red apple moisturiser thing. I thought it was mainly cute packaging but the product would be so so and it would be too light for my skin as it’s not like a normal cream but my skin loves it. Their panda under eye lightnener is another surprise for me. There have been quite a few I’ve wanted to like but my skin has been like ‘nope, not having that’ so they get donated to my sister or mum.

    1. Oh, I’ve been curious about the Tonymoly apple line. I hear you on the cute packaging presumption – but I am often surprised with Korean / Japanese beauty products! It’s good you can pass on things that don’t work for you! I hate to let things go to waste.

  2. I’ve disliked every single TBS skincare products I’ve tried so far … This particular Vitamin E cream would be a nightmare on my acne prone skin!😖
You should put an oil or/and a serum at night + the MAC in the morning. This routine should be appropriate for the winter months too 🤔
Missing you on the project pan 😪

    1. I haven’t HATED anything from TBS… until this. I feel like perhaps their formulations have changed?
I DO put oil serums on at night underneath my face creams! I find my skin soaks it all up. But now I’m going to try those sleeping masks from that Sephora set like you got! 😛

I really wanted to join on project pan but things are a bit hectic! I would have NEVER been able to put up a post for today. This post was supposed to have gone up last week and I just didn’t have the time…

  3. I never really got on with the Body Shop night cream. I found the day one was better for me oddly. Although I don’t reach for either as they don’t help my skin. Surprising that Mac has faired better but I guess it shows never judge a book by its cover☺ x

    1. Exactly, I would have never thought a face cream from MAC would be better than one from TBS! I just had a quick look at the ingredient list for the day cream and Wheat Germ Oil is MUCH lower on the list, around the 15th ingredient! It contains glycerin as the primary hydrating ingredient – go figure.

  4. That MAC face cream is a great find! I didn’t even know they made skin care.
The TBD cream sounds like it would be a great body cream for the driest of all, and I have heard that wheat germ oil really does work great for fading scars, but with that formula it does sound terrible for a face cream!

    1. Yes, I wanted to use up that TBS cream on my hands / feet but my boyfriend hated it so much, lol! I was surprised he objected. He said it was stinging his nostrils. 😛
I usually overlook MAC’s skincare but now I will look for more. I am also using a MAC toner right now which I really like.

  5. Such a shame on TBS cream, but great investigation on it. I’m surprised about the Mac cream as I don’t hear about Mac Skincare that often. Great post as per usual doll!

    1. Thank you! Yes, I think no one considers MAC as a skincare brand but I have been impressed with the few that I’ve tried. The prices aren’t TOO expensive either! Give them a try if you get a chance.

  6. too bad that the body shop cream clogged your pores. i have extremely oily skin that is prone to acne and this cream will absolutely ruin my akin also. i am glad i read this! i should be aware of Triticum Vulgare Germ Oil ! thank you for this detailed review 🙂

  7. I’m actually not surprised about your experience with TBS. Not that I’ve had a bad experience as such, but ever since paying more attention to skincare ingredients in general, I was put off by how ‘chemical’ they were in the sense that they have some unnecessary ingredients put in it. I find a lot are perfumed/fragranced which I really avoid and not as highly concentrated as one would have hoped!

It’s funny cos TBS used to kinda be my go-to when I was like 17 and then I stopped for a few years. I only use their face masks now, although I want to try their Drops of Youth range.

    1. I assumed TBS would contain skin friendly ingredients – I really shouldn’t assume anything anymore! I do wonder if ingredients changed once L’Oreal purchased TBS? Sometimes fragrance bothers me, sometimes not. Ideally I’d like to not have any added fragrance but sometimes the natural scents can be as off putting as the added fragrance.

I picked up a couple of their masks and also the Drops of Youth sleeping mask to try! My skin has been acting up a bit so I wanted to wait before trying new things. Stay tuned.

      1. I thought so too! But after being more wiser with skincare, I realise their ingredients list are full of things that do little for your skin. I mean, just seeing where that Vitamin E lies in the list is kinda disappointing. Not to mention, TBS has become pricier so it’s disappointing to not be paying what you wish for.

I generally avoid fragrance just as personal preference since I like my creams to smell neutral.

  8. Interesting, I would’ve assumed that the MAC one would have been the one to break you out – like you said, TBS is more focused on skincare than a makeup brand like MAC. Regardless, it’s good that one of these two creams worked for you!

Why is it necessary for the TBS one to have colour in it? No thank you. And ick…face creams that smell like grandma are the worst. Must have been bad if the SO could smell it :S

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Ugh I’m so over the grandma scents in skincare. What the heck! My SO’s nose isn’t even that sensitive that that tells you how POTENT this stuff was. Stay away!

I’m honestly going to read up on the various skincare MAC offers. I’m using their Lightful toner right now which I also like a LOT. Along with their cleansing oil, I’m thinking they know a few things about skincare. Really opened my eyes up.

  9. Interesting to read about these facial creams. It’s never fun when a cream doesn’t work on you but at the same time that’s sometimes the only way to find out, and I’m sure your post can help someone else before purchasing it. 🙂 Didn’t expect MAC to be that good in facial creams, as you said, they’re a makeup brand 😉 But I’m glad you found that out! I’ll check them out next time I go to MAC.

    1. It’s so true, sometimes the only way to truly know how you’d react is to try it on your own skin. So many people like that Vitamin E night cream so that’s why I decided to try it too.

I’m spreading the word about MAC’s skincare – I hope others will give them a chance too! Plus, Back to MAC for the empty container. Do you have the Back to MAC program there?

  10. I’ve never been a night-creme fan but I enjoy reading other people’s thoughts. The MAC consistency looks really hydrating but the TBS looks tempting. Glad MAC was there to the rescue!😁

    1. I’ve always used different creams for daytime vs night. For me, the daytime is more about protecting the skin, and the nighttime is for lots of pampering and treatment.

You never know, TBS seems to work for a lot of people! I suppose I could have returned it but ah well, it’s sometimes the price to pay being a beauty addict. 😛

      Liked by 1 person

      1. Hahaha! I have never returned anything in the store. Even clothes.. never! I guess it’s the advantage of having a lot of family members back home waiting for goodies that I don’t use or don’t love.. hahaha and yeah! Im sure some people would prefer the BTS than MAC or vice versa. And I only use moisturizer may it be during the day or at night (#lazyme) lol

  11. Great post I’m surprised by the Body Shop cream I’ve tried the Camomile Cleansing Oil and I loved it so I would have thought this would have been nice, I’m also surprised by your experience with the MAC cream I have the same skintype as you (literally to a tee!) but this has alcohol in it so I would be a little wary about it potentially drying out your skin? Really enjoyed this post though and I will admit the MAC cream does sound nice how is the Antipodes? xx

    Liked by 1 person

    1. I’ve tried that Camomile Cleansing Oil and I really liked it too! Also their cleansing balm was quite good too – the main issue I had with both was that they were so heavily scented.

The alcohol is really low down on the ingredient list in the MAC cream so I haven’t found it to be drying. Also, I don’t really react too much to alcohols in skin products – for me, they evaporate quickly and as long as the balance of the products are very hydrating (to compensate, I suppose?) then I’m ok.

The Antipodes cream is amazing! One of my top finds of 2016. Here’s the review I did on a few of the Antipodes products – the Vanilla Pod day cream is at the bottom of the post:

  12. I’ve probably tried loads of things that haven’t lived up to hype which is why I’m always skeptical about new products (including the Ordinary serums I’ve just started today). I think the thing that would put me off the Mac one is the parabens. Knowing more about them now and their link to breast cancer etc I avoid skincare with them in, and as much makeup as possible. Theyre in so many things it’s impossible to not have them in something but for things that are as close as skincare my skin (as opposed to my Laura Mercier setting powder that also contains them but is the last layer of makeup!!) I avoid where I can.
I tried some fancy TBS eye cream, I can’t remember which one it was but it stung my eyes!!!! I took it back! Lol. Xx

    Liked by 1 person

    1. I am very curious about The Ordinary items too! They’re so inexpensive! I can’t wait to hear your thoughts on them.

Hmm the parabens topic is still up for debate. For every claim of a linkage to cancer, I see another refuting it. I just find that the more I read about the dangers of skincare, the more I’m seeing a lot of blanket generalized statements (ie not all parabens are the same, even). That said, I’d love to find alternatives that work well to prevent bacteria growth in my skin products.

Ugh, I can’t stand eye creams that sting the eyes. I mean, do they not try the products on people before launching?!

      Liked by 1 person

      1. Yeah very much debatable but I guess my reasoning is my mum had breast cancer last year so I’ve just taken the decision to ear on the side of caution I guess. Like I say tho, they’re everywhere anyway so it not like I won’t use anything with them in, I just limit my exposure just in case 😊 yeah I wonder who they’re trying products on that react like that eye cream did!! I’m not a person who reacts to things usually so no idea what happened there!! Xx

        Liked by 1 person

        1. Oh I’m so sorry to hear about your mum! I hope her health is better now? I definitely understand your decision to be super cautious! It really is so difficult to avoid everything – even the food we eat.

          1. Thank you yes she’s a year clear now after her treatment so all is good but for another 4 years of hormone pills. Yep it’s difficult so that’s why I’m not all out can’t have this and that etc. you can do that and still end up with a cancer so I don’t worry too much! X

    1. I did not expect the Vitamin E cream to cause me any problems at all. I kept questioning if it could have been another product that was causing the issue… or possibly my skin was “purging” or “getting used” to the product. But, I make it a point to not try more than 1 new product at a time in order to eliminate any confusion. When I read about the Wheat Germ Oil, I was SHOCKED!

I’ve been a long time fan of the MAC cleansing oil and more recently, their Lightful toner. Now with this cream, I’m much more confident in trying other MAC skincare!

  14. I had a similar reaction (clogged pores and unusual redness) from one of TBS’s vit E creams. It was in 2007 or 2008, and I don’t remember whether it was a day cream or a night cream (and the formula may have been completely different back then – who knows)… but I haven’t bought any TBS vit E product since then.

Wheat Germ Oil can often be found in leave-on face masks and all sorts of rich creams (face creams, body butters, foot creams). I think the trick is to limit the usage of face products with lots of wheat germ oil to maybe once or twice a week. TBS obviously wants their customers to use this cream every day – but they should know better…

Glad to hear the MAC cream is much, much better! 🙂

    1. I do wonder if ingredients changed since L’Oreal bought TBS? I do like the Vitamin E toner, and I did buy the Vitamin E Aqua Boost Essence, which both do contain wheat germ oil but much lower concentration. I can tolerate them much better.
I’m going to review all my heavier face creams to see if they have a high concentration of wheat germ oil going forward!

  15. ugh, i can’t stand too much fragrance in any bodycare products, including shampoo. I’ve stayed away from TBS products for a longtime now due to overwhelming scent. Anything that lingers, I have to be able to tolerate. The litmus test: Try it out when you’re hungover… if it makes you nauseous, it’s a deal-breaker 😉

    Liked by 1 person

    1. It used to not bother me as much. Maybe as I get exposed to more and more beauty products, my tolerance for synthetic smelling fragrances is lowering.
Um if I was hungover, the last thing I’d be doing is sniffing my skincare! 😆

  16. I love TBS’ Aloe Vera line and skincare in general. The only thing I don’t like from them? Their face creams and moisturizers. They are either too potent and give me breakouts, or do not do enough. I go to other brands for that. My favorite is a basic Olay cream. Go figure.

    Liked by 1 person

    1. I don’t recall ever using TBS face moisturizers before and now I’m hesitant to try any more. Or I will read ingredient list a lot more closely AND go smell the product first.
I used to use the Olay moisturizer too but I found the smell to annoy me. For day time, I really like Clinique’s Dramatically Different Moisturizer – no smell and a good basic cream.

  17. I’ve only tried the Tea Tree and Seaweed skin care items from TBS and haven’t had any problems. I do remember liking M.A.C.’s Strobe Cream and have a barely used bottle of their Fix spray, but I don’t see myself trying out any of their other items. I’ve hauled enough from them that I’d rather not set foot in their stores (I probably will once I remember to bring in my containers for Back to M.A.C., but that’s it).

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Yes, the MAC Strobe cream! I’d forgotten about that. It’s great. I didn’t really consider it skincare, more of a highlighter. But you’re right, it probably is more of a skincare item! I tried their Fix+ ages and it was just ok – expensive for what it was. The other MAC skincare item I love is their cleansing oil.

  18. I’m sorry you didn’t get on with the cream from TBS but I’m glad you found a good alternative in the MAC one. I personally don’t mind the rosy scent, and like the fact it lingers for a while. This product doesn’t break me out and I’ve nearly used up one pot and I’d consider a repurchase. A little goes a long way, I’ve had my pot for the best part of a year! I keep the little white lid thing too 😉

  20. I realised I read this through facebook the other day and never came on and read a comment.
I’ve looked at the Vitamin E range in body shop a few times and always wondered why it’s pink, why the hell are they adding colourant, I expect more from TBS!
Not tried any skincare from MAC at all, maybe now we have a MAC counter I’ll go and get some minis! The MAC cream looks really thick to me, but I’ll trust you that is says light and silky! Tempted to spend my MAC voucher to try it as what I want still hasn’t come back in stock!

    1. I guess they wanted to have the pink to keep with the theme? I don’t know what they were thinking. For a brand that’s supposed to be natural… sure doesn’t seem like it!
The MAC cream isn’t heavy at all! It’s a classic moisturizer texture, if that makes sense – it’s not a gel cream hybrid, it’s not oily either. That’s why I can see myself using this during the day time. Get a sample first to test out!

  21. I didn’t read the MAC review because I don’t see the point in teasing myself with a product I can’t buy, lol but I’ve got to admit I had the exact same experience with the Body Shop cream! It clogged my pores, caused me to break out more AND my face would get really red when I applied it after a fresh wash. Not cool. I didn’t know that about the wheat germ thing. I guess it pays to do your research, lol. I agree about the scent and the coloring though. Just not necessary. Since then I’ve been using the Acure Night Cream and while the scent is still a bit much for me it’s more natural smelling and it’s great quality. P.S. I love your title. I giggled at “face off”.
