Trash Stash: January 2017

First Trash Stash of 2017!
trash201701_2
As you may recall, in my 2016 Trash Stash summary post, I expressed interest in trying to achieve 365 empties for 2017 (aka 1 empty per day). Let’s see how I did.

Skincare

trash201701_8
Mèreadesso Lip Treats
Got this ages ago in a set from ebeauty.ca (the ill-fated online beauty store from The Shopping Channel). This lip balm was just ok – a rather thin texture that disappeared off the lips quickly so I had to keep reapplying. All in all, this tube only lasted me about 3 weeks with daily use! I recently saw that Nordstrom carries this.
Stash worthiness: 4/10     Repurchase: No
trash201701_9
Body Shop Vitamin E Night Cream – $22 for 50ml
I wanted so much to love this but I don’t. See my review on this. I managed to use about 1/3 of it before I called it quits.
Stash worthiness: 4/10     Repurchase: No
trash201701_10
Physician’s Formula Anti Aging Laser Resurfacing Serum – $21.95 for 30ml
This a lightweight gel serum that contains lactic acid as a gentle exfoliant, and it worked really well to leave my skin soft and radiant. This is my second bottle and it made a favourites list. Rexall used to sell this but not anymore – and I can’t find it on Physician’s Formula’s website so I suspect it’s discontinued now. Typical! :/
Stash worthiness: 9/10     Repurchase: No

Biotherm Biocils Lash Optimizer – $31 for 125ml
This is my favourite eye makeup remover. It is effective in removing all traces of waterproof makeup, and it does not leave a greasy film on my skin, or cause blurry vision. I’ve tried lots of bi-phase type of eye makeup removers and this is the best one I’ve found so far. The only gripe I have is the packaging – the cap is a bit leaky so when I shake up the liquid to mix the 2 phases, the product spills out a little. Thankfully, it appears that Biotherm has revised the bottle so I’m hoping the new version resolves this issue.
Stash worthiness: 9/10     Repurchase: Yes
trash201701_11
Leaders Insolution Wrinkle Filler Sheet Mask – $7
I’d heard so much hype about this brand of sheet masks and it’s always out of stock. I finally got my hands on this and I must say, it’s fantastic. It’s one of the best fitting masks I’ve tried – it molds to my face really well and all of the holes are at the right places. Now having tried the Etude House one though, I do find this mask to be a bit on the thick side. And, this cost me $7 whereas the Etude House one is only $2.
Stash worthiness: 9/10     Repurchase: Maybe

Beyond Nature Garden Nourishing by Natto Sheet Mask – $1
This is a very basic sheet mask – the paper is not as soft as others on the market and the serum content is at minimal level.  The fit is also just passable; the mouth hole is too low and large for my face. It does have a pleasant soft scent like a pocket tissue pack.  I didn’t love this mask but the natto serum did make my skin feel really soft, even the following morning. I’ll look for other skincare with natto in it now. If you’re looking for something inexpensive, this one is a good option.
Stash worthiness: 7/10     Repurchase: No
trash201701_12
Sunwoo Cosme Q10 Syn-Ake Venom Sheet Mask – $2
Fun packaging but a fairly standard mask inside. The mouth hole was a bit high for my face. The paper feels slightly thicker than other masks I’ve used, and the serum was just the right amount and wasn’t overly scented. I didn’t see any noticeable improvement to my face – it didn’t feel necessarily more hydrated, softer, nadda.
Stash worthiness: 5/10     Repurchase: No

Tony Moly I’m Real Makgeolli Sheet Mask – $6
My first Tony Moly sheet mask! After I read Rachael’s review of this, I went into my sheet mask stash and found this there! I had won a couple of Tony Moly sheet masks, but I didn’t realize it was this particular kind. It’s an ok mask  – the face holes are well aligned to my face, although the length of the mask is a bit too short on my large forehead. The serum is a milky consistency and smells perfume-y which I wasn’t a fan of. It’s a purifying mask and I did find it helped a bit with redness and small bumps on my forehead, but nothing dramatic.
Stash worthiness: 6/10     Repurchase: No

Body Care

trash201701_5
Biotherm Lait Corporel Body Milk – $30 for 400ml
On my favourites list from last quarter. It smells like grapefruit and glides on my skin like silk. I just wish it wasn’t so pricey or else I’d indulge more often, same with the corresponding body butter.
Stash worthiness: 9/10     Repurchase: Yes

Sukin Botanical Body Wash – $8 for 250ml
I’ve enjoyed every Sukin product that I’ve tried so far but this body wash is terrible! It’s watery and doesn’t lather and smells like waterlogged radishes. Thank goodness I got this for 50% off.
Stash worthiness: 2/10     Repurchase: No
trash201701_6
Consonant Skincare Skin Perfecting Body Scrub – $30 for 275g
I had to lay off using body scrubs for a while due to the rashes and skin biopsy on my legs. But now they’ve healed and have left hyperpigmentation, I’ve been diligently using both my Salux cloth as well as manual scrubs to exfoliate my legs to help improve the skin tone.
trash201701_7
This one is quite good and grainy – a mixture of salt and sugar granules – it also contain coconut and olive oils which coats my skin even after rinsing off. It is unscented which might be a good option for those who are sensitive to fragrance. I personally prefer something that smells nice for the bath. This is also a bit pricey for a scrub – I used it about 3 times a week and this tub lasted me about 3 weeks.
Stash worthiness: 7/10     Repurchase: Maybe

Hair Care

trash201701_3
TRESemmé 4+4 Extra Hold Hairspray – C$8 for 311g
My go-to trusty hairspray. I’m going to make a point to try other hairsprays to see if I find anything better.
Stash worthiness: 9/10     Repurchase: Yes

Herbal Essences Smooth Collection Shampoo – $8 for 400ml
This is a really good shampoo that cleans my hair without stripping it. And it smells like an orgasmic fresh bouquet!
Stash worthiness: 8/10     Repurchase: Yes
trash201701_4
Curl Keeper – $17 for 250ml
I must empty at least 6 of these a year. It’s a staple but I sometimes try different things out of curiosity. I have yet to find a worthy replacement though!
Stash worthiness: 10/10     Repurchase: Yes

Creation Garden Argan Oil from Morocco – $26 for 120ml
Once upon a time I used to put pure argan oil on my face. There’s fundamentally nothing wrong with that – it’s really soothing and provides great moisture. But now that I’ve tried other facial oils (like this and this), I don’t think I can go back to this any time soon. I ended up using this up in my hair.
Stash worthiness: 8/10     Repurchase: Maybe

Tools

trash201701_13
Delon+ Premium Cotton Rounds – approx $1.60 for 100 count
A staple from Costco. I like using this to apply toner.
Stash worthiness: 9/10     Repurchase: Yes

Yves Rocher Cotton Pads – $2 for 80 count
These are really good facial cottons. I pick them up occasionally when I feel like a change. They’re soft and cushion-y and inexpensive. The downside is that they are small in size and can be slightly linty. Interestingly, these are made in France.
Stash worthiness: 8/10     Repurchase: Yes

MAC Pro Performance Sponge – $24
I wasn’t sure if I should include this in an empties or in a declutter post but since this will be trashed, I decided to include it here. I bought this sponge to test out since it had decent reviews online. I didn’t care for it – the texture got progressively firmer with use and I didn’t find it blended out foundation that well. I compared this against other Beauty Blender type sponge in this post. I wonder if this can be used for Back to MAC?
Stash worthiness: 5/10     Repurchase: No

Makeup

trash201701_14
Vincent Longo Water Canvas Foundation in #4 Soft Amber – $63 for 11.5g
I did a detailed review of this and it’s listed as one of my best finds from 2016.
trash201701_15
It’s about 90% finished but toward the very end, the foundation dried out to the point where it was no longer usable. The case is refillable but sadly, Hudson’s Bay recently got rid of the Vincent Longo counter so it’ll be more difficult, not to mention expensive, for me to replace it.
Stash worthiness: 9/10     Repurchase: Maybe
trash201701_16
The Body Shop Fresh Nude Foundation in 020 Bali Vanilla – $25 for 30ml
I finished another foundation! 😮 One aspect of these Trash Stash posts is to help determine how long products lasts for me. And since this was part of my Project Pan, I can estimate that this bottle lasted me around 4 months with regular use (1½ pumps per use). This is a good everyday foundation with a natural coverage.
Stash worthiness: 8/10     Repurchase: Yes
trash201701_17
GOSH Xtreme Mascara – $16 for 10ml
I picked this up on clearance for half off – I’d normally not pay this much for a mascara, let alone a drugstore one. This was quite good – it delivered on both volume and length.
trash201701_18
I used this tube for 2 months and the formula peaked at around the one month mark – it got progressively clumpier after that. It is also quite a heavy formula so it did droop my lashes a bit. It was also a smidgen smudgy.
Stash worthiness: 7/10     Repurchase: Maybe
trash201701_19
CoverGirl LashBlast Fusion in Blue – $11 for 13.1ml
I’ve use this before in black but I bought this in the blue colour because it was on clearance for $2 and I was curious about coloured mascaras. This looked weird on me. I have no issue with the formula – it provides good volume and length and it doesn’t clump. I’d not use this in the blue again but I would definitely get it in black.
Stash worthiness: 5/10     Repurchase: No

Etude House Dr. Mascara Fixer Volume Up Curl Fix – $7 for 6ml
My HG mascara primer. It helps my lashes hold a curl and it keeps my mascaras from smudging. It’s also inexpensive – I actually found a cheaper source for this, it used to cost me $9 but now only $7!
Stash worthiness: 10/10     Repurchase: Yes

Lancome eye liner in Chocolate Affair
I meant to toss this after the end of my Project Pan back in November but I hung onto it for a bit longer (I really like this liner and it was limited edition!) But now it really is time to toss since the lead just falls right out of the casing. *sigh*
Stash worthiness: 9/10     Repurchase: 😦

Sample / Travel Size

trash201701_20
Caudalie VinoSource S.O.S. Thirst Quenching Serum – I’ve owned the full size of this serum and I liked it well enough. It’s a lightweight hydrating serum that I would consider repurchasing.

Vichy Neovadiol Gf Densifying Care – this is a silicone-y serum that I used like a primer under makeup and I liked it, surprisingly. Not sure I’d buy the full size though – it’s quite fragranced.

Dermalogica C-12 Concentrate – another silicone-y serum that worked like a primer. It didn’t do much for my skin but the sample was enough for 3 uses so I wasn’t expecting major results.
trash201701_23
Shiseido Bio-Performance Advanced Super Revitalizing Cream – I brought this gwp size with me when I went to the in-laws over the holidays. It’s my favourite winter nighttime cream, and now I’m using the full size of it. 🙂
trash201701_24
Farmacy Rise ‘n Shine – I redeemed 100pts at Sephora for this and was super psyched to try it – what a disappointment! This thing pills terribly no matter how little I use or how carefully I spread it on my skin (lots of reviews on Sephora had the same complaint). It’s supposed to be for daytime but there is no way I can wear this under makeup. I tried it at nighttime a few times but it still balled up. I couldn’t even finish this sample. :/
trash201701_25
REN Resurfacing AHA Concentrate – this came in a kit and it’s a similar concept to the Paula’s Choice Resist Weekly Resurfacing AHA Treatment. It’s a liquid toner type of product that I apply after cleansing and before other products. I found the Paula’s Choice to be more effective, and it’s also cheaper.

Antipodes Apostle Skin-Brightening & Tone-Correcting Serum – I reviewed this and did not care for it. I used as much as I could before deciding it wasn’t worth my time!

Consonant Skincare HydrExtreme – I loved this! It’s a watery serum that sinks in and really plumps up my skin and smooths fine lines. I especially liked using this under my eyes because it didn’t add any texture to the skin and it made my concealer look super smooth. This sample lasted me almost a whole month and I have another sample vial that I’m currently using. Then I plan to get the full size – I have a bunch of points saved up at the Consonant store so I will redeem them towards this.
trash201701_22
Diorshow Iconic Overcurl Mascara – it’s a nice mascara but nothing groundbreaking. It gives nice definition, good length but not much volume. And it does hold a curl. I don’t usually opt for mascara with curved wands – they don’t apply mascara any better than straight ones, in my experience. The full size of this sells for C$37 and I would not buy it considering I can get the same or better results from a drugstore brand.
trash201701_21
Skin79 The Prestige Beblesh Balm SPF25 PA++ – Isn’t this so cute? It’s a little keychain deluxe sample. I’ve not used a Korean BB cream in a while and now I wonder why. This one is hydrating and keeps my skin looking supple all day. It has a light coverage but covers enough of redness that I can wear this as an everyday foundation. I love Skin79’s Super Plus Beblesh Balm Triple Functions SPF30 PA++ (aka “HOT PINK”) and now I will consider buying the full size of this version.
trash201701_26
Consonant Skincare Intensive Therapy Organic Hand Cream – one of my favourite hand creams because it works at keeping my hands protected through multiple washing.

L’Occitane Shea Ultra Rich Body Cream – I love the smell of L’Occitane’s shea products and this is a nice cream but I wouldn’t consider it “ultra rich”. This absorbed into the skin well but I didn’t feel it lasted that well to keep my skin hydrated.

The Body Shop Cocoa Butter Body Butter – hmm this reminded me how silky TBS Body Butters can be! And the scent of this is just delightful – a warm cake batter smell that isn’t cloying. I might get a full size of this… and I just heard that they’re discontinuing the cocoa range! Say it with me: Typical! 😮

So, counting all of the empties, I managed to use up 37 items! 😀  24 were full-sized and 13 were sample sized.  So I’m managing to outpace my goal of 1 per day… yay! Let’s see if I can empty 28 for February (even though I have an excess of 6 products I can “carry over”, I can’t rest on my laurels!)  Did you use up any beauty products in January?

    1. I do actually like radishes… just was not expecting that body wash to smell like that! ><
I'm on my way to finishing another foundation for February I think – woohoo!
The Etude House mascara base is my favourite. I just got one of my coworkers addicted to it too… heheh.

    1. I’ve been hooked on that cream for about 4 years now. It’s especially great for nighttime use during the winter months. I never have any flakes when I use it.

    1. Oh no! That’s always the flip side – using up something you LOVE but can’t replace. But maybe you will find something to replace it that you’ll like just as much or more? Fingers crossed for you!

      1. I didn’t know it was redemption this weekend but YES, I’ve seen that promotion before. I believe the last promotion they had around Christmas time was structured like that. I passed on it. Not worth it! They’re basically holding my points ransom. I want the bonus to be applied to additional dollar amount!

      1. omg… I completely MISSED your Hydrextreme review since I didn’t recognize the sample vial. Got a couple samplies today. It really smoothed out the back of my hand so I can’t wait to see what it does to my face! Does NE1 know whether this ever goes on sale? From what I recall, it always seems to be excluded from promotions…

  3. I can’t believe how many products you used up in 1 month – very impressive!

I had no idea the Shopping Channel had a dedicated online beauty store – when did it shut down?

That Body Shop moisturizer sounds horrendous. Fragrance and dye? Yeesh.

    1. ebeauty.ca was short-lived, I’d say they were open for about 2 years between 2013-14?

Yeah, my perception of TBS has changed a bit since that experience. Will be reading labels a bit more carefully!

    1. I bet you could! I’m so slow in using up shower gels and shampoos! I don’t know why. Maybe I’m not using enough? I don’t take very long showers so I lather up and rinse quickly and I get out.

  4. So many products, yet again!
How interesting, I never knew Physician’s Formula did skin care. It’s a shame that serum worked so well for you but is now discontinued – Murphy’s Law!

That Biotherm Body Milk sounds wonderful. I would never think to look for body care within that brand, as I thought they only did skincare!

You finished so much makeup already. I haven’t even decided which 5 makeup products I need to work towards using up by the end of the year, OMG.

Now that Farmacy is being carried at Sephora, I’ve been so curious…but what a waste of 100 points! Moisturizer that pills is the worst.

WHAT, I can’t believe TBS is thinking of discontinuing their Cocoa range…it’s so popular!

    1. PF dabbles in skincare. Right now they launched some sort of facial oil – they like to follow the trends but don’t really stick to any core line. Shame!

I didn’t really plan to finish the foundations but I noticed that I kept reaching for the same ones for the past month and they were getting used up. I’m focusing on using up another foundation now and I can bust open the few that I got recently! 😛

I was shocked that they are discontinuing the cocoa line – my coworker and I both got that body butter sample and commented how much we liked it. So we went by TBS to see if they had any promotions on it and that we might pick it up (they had their typical buy 3 get 2 free deal). The girl informs us that the cocoa line is being discontinued (along with the honey line) but the kicker is – none of the stuff is on sale! Like, c’mon. If you’re going to discontinue it, at least give us a deal. 😛 We’re holding out for them to get marked down – hrmph! Oh and I asked if they were replacing the cocoa line with anything similar and she said they’re launching an almond collection – so that might be promising, I like almond. But I don’t understand why they had to discontinue cocoa and replace with almond – can’t they co-exist?!

      Liked by 1 person

      1. Heheh, you need to get ON all that base makeup you bought during Hauluary! 😛
That’s silly that they’re not doing any discounts for a line they’re discontinuing…you’re right, hopefully it’ll get marked down soon! (also, let me know if/when that happens!)
Umm, BIG YES to almond. I LOVE almond. But yes, I don’t see why they couldn’t have both? I guess maybe they think both scents are kind of nutty and don’t need both – cocoa and almond are pretty different scents, though.

  5. Huh, I had no idea PF did skincare! How odd. Their whole line is a bit bizarre to me, haha! I have some PF makeup I need to try, though.

Glad you liked TBS’s foundation. I’m still using mine – not sure I like it enough to repurchase but it’s fine for just whatever errand days.

    As usual, so many empties!!

    Liked by 1 person

    1. I’ve concluded that PF is like the fast fashion of the makeup world. They chase after whatever is the new trend and pumps it out and then they’re onto the next thing. So basically, don’t fall in love with any of their products because they won’t be around forever. I rue the day they discontinue the eye booster liquid liner pen. I love that thing!

I say I’d repurchase TBS foundation now but you know I’ll be distracted… and by the time I get through the other foundations and decide I want to repurchase TBS, I’ll find out they discontinued it! 😛 I’m glad that you at least don’t hate it!

      Like

  6. Sounds like TBS are discontinuing a couple of things! As I found a few months ago that they’re discontinuing this scrub mask that I personally really like to use once in a while!

Impressive stash as always. Glad to know am not the only one who sometimes puts ‘non-empties’ in these types of posts like the items you couldn’t finish or the sponge you’re trashing! 🙂

    1. I’m curious what direction TBS is heading… I’m thinking it’s not really a direction I like all that much!

Yeah, the definition of an “empty” doesn’t always apply neatly to every product. I do plan to do a declutter post – maybe quarterly – for things that aren’t used up but maybe are old, or items I never touch. Some will get re-homed, some will be trashed. I’ve done a few of those on the blog before. The most epic was this one:

  7. Love this post!! Although, I completely feel the same about Sukin – it seemed like it was going to be the perfect fit for me but it just dried my skin out completely and made my skin feel a little plump.. (weird, I know!)

I’m loving the idea of your Trash Stash! We need to see more of them 😀 xx

  9. I’ve tried the Tony Moly red wine sheet mask. It was ok. Nothing special. My fave is still the green tea one from Sephora but the Peppermint Cocoa ones from The Creme Shop are good. I like the mines targeted at mattifying & anti-blemish since I have combo skin. Sadly those Creme Shop ones were limited edition for the holidays but I got a pack of 5 for $5 or $6 at TJ Maxx. Just gonna keep an eye out and if I see them again I’ll grab them.

I might have an empties post up on Friday. The basket is overflowing again. 😂

I should also try to use up samples too, and include those in my Empties. 🙂 I set aside a paper bag to store my empties so I’m excited for my first post!

  12. Glad you’re reaching your goal of a product a day! I got the full size Cocoa Butter body butter for Christmas from my boyfriend because I knew they were discontinuing the range. I haven’t touched it yet, but I can’t wait! FYI, the Cocoa Butter body lotion smells nothing like the body butter.

It just boggles my mind why they’re get rid of something so good and popular! Good to know the body lotion doesn’t smell like the body butter. Enjoy your body butter once you open it! 🙂

I only show about half of what I ended up having used up in 4 – 5 months time in the video to try and keep it interesting. But is it just me or do products always run out all at the same time?

    1. I always say to myself if I have less than 10 products at the end of the month, then I’ll skip the month, but I always seem to finish more than 10 each month!
You’re SO RIGHT – products run out at the same time – SO ODD! 😕

  16. Looks like that your favourites get discontinued often 😛 I’m sure you have a bunch of others to try out 😉

I love that description on the Sukin body wash *LOL* hilarious wahahah

That body shop foundation~~ hm… I’ve actually never bought their foundation before. Their packaging is just not attracting my eye balls. High praise from you. I’ll give this one a go too.

    1. Yes I always have a few others to fall back on but why do companies mess around like that! 😛
The Body Shop foundation is a nice no fuss one especially for winter months for me. See if you can get a sample to test out.

  17. Omg I’m dying at “it smells like an orgasmic fresh bouquet”! Lol! I was so stoked when Herbal Essences brought back their original scents but then I never actually bought them. Now I definitely need to pick up new shampoo lol.
I’m completely impressed at your empties goal and even more impressed that you surpassed it! You go girl!

    1. I didn’t even think Herbal Essences was still around… these are certainly a throwback!
It’s been really satisfying to collection and tally my empties! I have my March one coming up next week! 😀

    1. I’m hoping to keep up my pace for the whole year – we’ll see! 😛
I plan on doing a post on my “HG” products coming up – all of the items would be 9 or 10 out of 10!
