OPI Dim Sum Plum

Happy International Women’s Day! 😀 What better way to celebrate Women’s Day than talking about pretty nail polish, right? 😉 But on a serious and personal note: I’m involved in a Women in Business network at work that meets regularly – recently I was privileged enough to meet women from across various industries. It was a powerful gathering of strong women who empower each other to be their best every day and help others rise up. It reminds me that women don’t always need to compete with each other, let’s work together and hold each other up. 🙂

Now, back to the nail polish – this is OPI Dim Sum Plum:

I picked this up during my manic polish shopping in January last year when I came off my year-long No-Buy. I got this polish for only $4 during a salon’s clearance sale.

First off, the name of this polish is so fun! I love eating dim sum. For those who are not familiar with dim sum, it’s like Chinese tapas – lots of bite-sized little dishes that are shared. It’s best when there’s a large group of people to enjoy a wide variety of dishes:

This polish was part of the 2010 Hong Kong collection. Back then, I wasn’t too into OPI polishes – if I had, I would have been really keen on this collection as I was born in Hong Kong. Plus, the colours are quite fun for the summer:

The shade Dim Sum Plum is a brightened berry creme colour that’s unique to my collection. It’s one of those colours that I would normally pass off as “old lady” at first glance, but I think it can look really fresh and chic on shorter nails. I actually wore this as my pedi which I really liked.

The formula of this polish is outstanding – exceptionally smooth and no streaks. It can be a one-coater if the richness of colour is to your liking at one coat:

The second coat yields true to bottle colour:

No photo of the wear, but I can report that I wore it for 2 weeks as my pedi and there were no chips at all. 🙂

I would say this colour would be suitable for neutral and cool skin tones, those with very warm skin tones may find this to clash.

The random object is Krusty the Clown in LEGO form!

In 2014, LEGO released a series of Simpsons Minifigures and I got a little bit obsessed with trying to find every one of them. Coincidentally, in 2014 we visited Denmark and happened across a bin of these at Føtex (a department store). The trick with the LEGO Minifigures is that they’re wrapped in opaque foil packaging so you can’t see what’s inside – but we didn’t want duplicates, so imagine 2 grown-ass adults standing in the toy section feeling up every bag to see if we could distinguish between the characters. 😆

Marge and Krusty were super easy to figure out by feel because of their hair. I had a tough time distinguishing between Lisa and Maggie. Perhaps you’ll see more of the other LEGO Minifigures I collected in upcoming manis… don’t want to use up all of my “random objects” so quickly! XD I suppose you can say the LEGO Simpsons Minifigures that I collected were also souvenirs from our visit to Denmark – did you know what LEGO was invented in Denmark? 😀

  1. Stunning! I don’t have this one – maybe I need to go seek out that salon in the PATH. LOL. I have to go back through comments ’cause I know you told me where it was, but I forgot.

    The Women in Business group sounds great! Women working together to support one another is wonderful. For sure there is enough of the reverse going on. Happy Women’s Day!

    1. It’s in the PATH, right near the Sheraton Hotel! Their supply is nearly gone though… last time I walked by all of the polishes were taken off the display stand and put into a basket.

      Yes, women building other women up is so important.

    1. I never know the difference between fuchsia and magenta. According to online, fuchsia is more purple than magenta. I kind of use them interchangeably.

    1. I use random hand creams! Lately has been NuWorld whipped hand butter, and Consonant hand cream. I just apply as regularly as I can – every time after I wash my hands!
      My SO doesn’t know that we have an online relationship… shhhhh.

  9. LOVE magenta polishes, they tend to be very flattering on a lot of skin tones! I love this shade on you and it looks like it applies beautifully.
    Happy International Women’s Day! I feel like women face a lot of unnecessary pressures and judgment, so we should always support and empower one another – we do NOT need to have additional judgment from one another.
    In terms of plummy shades, I’ve been loving Essie’s Plumberry. I’ve tried to photograph this colour so. many. times. but it looks fire-engine red on camera 😦 I love Dim Sum too (how can we not? We’re Chinese!) Those Simpsons figurines are AWESOME!

I heard this great thing on a talk show once, about why women tend to compete with each other – paraphrasing here – but that it used to be that women were fighting for scraps leftover once men took what they want. But now the opportunities are expanding so the size of the PIE itself is bigger, not just individual slices – so women need to get away from the old mentality of fighting each other. 🙂
      Oooh just looked up Essie Plumberry – it looks like a red + plum mix. I know what you mean about some colours being a pain in the behind to photograph. Sometimes I have to adjust the tone and then my skin colour turns green. Ugh.
      We’re having dim sum tomorrow, I’m soooo excited! What’s your favourite dim sum items? I’m weird – I like those turnip cakes. And bao. And the sesame lotus paste balls.

      1. Huh…fighting for leftover scraps, how interesting. We’ve DEFINITELY evolved from that…we’re competing over one another’s successes when one woman’s success does not mean you are any less successful.
        LOL, turning my skin colour a different shade was the exact problem I had with photographing Plumberry, so I just gave up.
        Hey, I like the turnip cakes! My mom makes them at home though, so we rarely get them at dim sum. Baos are definitely my favourite – I can never choose between ordering the BBQ pork baos or the custard baos!

    And I have a small collection of Funko Pop figures. I just buy random ones I like. Right now I’m trying to get my hands on El Kabong (Quick Draw McGraw’s alter ego). I might see what the comic book store has this weekend.

    I love the ‘women in business’ networking idea! This is what I’m going to propose at my next place of work (I’ll leave the company I’m working for now – too many changes and, since this Monday, no more homeworking until further notice which is ridiculous…)

    1. Sorry to hear about your soon to be ex-workplace. It’s really not that much of an effort to put in place programs like these but some places just don’t care. And those are the places that can’t draw the best talent out there and get left in the dust!

      Yup, I was born in Hong Kong and adopted. 🙂

    That’s a gorgeous shade…and the name of it makes me a little hungry too…

    I love that our workplaces are so engaged with International Womens Day! We got to hear some inspiring stories yesterday and were treated to a morning tea as well.

  15. Your timing for those polish-dripping photos was impeccable :]

    I just looked at swatches of the full Hong Kong collection.. I had no idea how many iconic shades were in it, like Jade is the New Black and Lucky Lucky Lavender. OPI isn’t even my favorite brand, but now I have an urge to grab some of them!

    Dim Sum Plum looks excellent on your nails and with your skin tone! Though I do not understand the name – it looks more berry toned to my eyes!

      I was surprised how many iconic shades were from the Hong Kong collection too. I’m glad OPI has the sense to bring some of the good ones from the LE collections over to the core collection.

      I think the naming department had it in their mind to name something -anything- Dim Sum Plum and this shade was “close enough”. I do wonder if they come up with the name first or get “inspired” when they see the colour story.

        It would be interesting to see OPI’s creative process, I really do love most of their names and appreciate the effort that goes into the puns and colors. That one just missed the mark a tad.

  16. I’ve never had dim sum, but it sure does look good! I’m also loving the shade. I don’t find it to be old lady like at all. It’s really bold and cheery. I’m also digging The Simpson’s Lego collection. My son would love it! No Sideshow Bob? Hahaha!

    1. Oh, you MUST try dim sum one of these days! Go with people who are well versed in the various dishes, they won’t make you try weird stuff!
      Nope, no Sideshow Bob Lego. They released 2 series of the Simpsons Minifigures but neither included him!

  17. This colour is so lovely! Sometimes it’s a shame that colours are released as part of certain collections and then you don’t hear of them again. This is such a Chanelle colour! The Krusty figurine is adorable too 🙂

    1. It’s true about the limited edition releases, although I’ve been told that some colours from this collection made it over to the core OPI collection so they’re still readily available. I just did a search and Dim Sum Plum is still available. 🙂 I think it would look fantastic on you!

  22. It looks good on you. I agree that it probably won’t work on warmer skin tons. It really does have a ‘difficult’ to pull off sort of vibe in the bottle form. I haven’t been able to pull off any bright berry like this one yet. Still searching for ‘the’ colour.

    1. I think if you were find a shade that leans more pink than purple, you can probably pull it off. I always think shades like this look dated but somehow they managed to make this look modern.

      You need to include the Super Maria figurines in your photo backdrops. 😆
