June and July 2017 No-Buy-Low-Buy Accountability

I hadn’t planned on being MIA last week but it was my final week at my old job and it was so busy!  I ended up having a lot of social engagements last week (goodbyes) – being out every night makes it difficult to blog!  Things likely won’t settle down until after Labour Day weekend…

This post is a combined June and July accountability (I know, I’m so late with this!)  June was a No-Buy month whereas July is a Low-Buy month.  My budget for July was originally $200 but since I slightly overspent back in April, I had to subtract off $1.70 from my budget, leaving me with $198.30 to play with.

I was able to stretch my budget by supplementing with gift cards – plus, I received some birthday presents! 😀

In June, I bought NOTHING!  There were some temptations but knowing that July was around the corner, I was able to hold off.   Then July rolled around and… I got my shopping on! 🙂

First, a few nail polishes (because I can’t help myself):

• Essie Gel Couture in To Have & To Gold and Lace to the Altar – from the Bridal collection – $10 each

The other photo doesn’t do this colour any justice. This shows the flaky shimmer better.

• China Glaze in Hay Girl Hay (My Little Pony collection) – $6
• Sinful Colors in Rose Dust – $2
• Cutex Color & Care Polish in Pop the Prosecco – $7

CG in Hay Girl Hay from the MLP collection is a stunning multi-faceted shimmery topper.

A bunch of sheet masks (because I used up some in my 30 Day Masking Challenge!):

TonyMoly sheet masks:
• Pureness 100 Mask Sheet in Collagen, Propolis, and Caviar

• I’m Real Mask Sheet Broccoli, Avocado, Tea Tree (x2), Seaweeds (x2), Tomato (x3)
Not sure what possessed me to get multiples of masks that I’ve not even tried before! But there was a good deal at the Korean grocery store where I got these (12 masks for $20)

Montagne Jeunesse masks:
• 2 Stage Rescue Mud Masque For Problem Prone Skin x8
• 2 Stage T-Zone Peel Off Masque x6
• 2 Stage Shine Control Mud Masque x6
• Morning After Face Scrub For Men x2
• PawPaw Peel Off
• Prickly Pear Peel Off Skin Boost Masque
• Nut Oil Masque
• Anti-Wrinkle Cool Eyes
I loved those 2 Stage masks so much when I tried them for my 30 Day Masking Challenge that I just had to get more of them!  These were $1.50 each off saleevent.com.

• Karuna Exfoliating Face Mask – set includes 4 Exfoliating masks
• Karuna Karma Kit Face Mask Set – includes 1 of each Exfoliating, Hydrating, Anti-Oxidant, and Age-Defying
I found these at Winners for $12.99 per box! I’ve seen these masks at Sephora and they sell for $10 each! 😮

• Ettang Yogurt Hydrating Rubber Face Mask – $3.99
I’ve been curious to try these – all you need to do is add water to the powder to make a pliable mask.  I think they’re similar to the masks I’ve had applied when I get facials done. I loved it when they peeled off the mask all in one sheet – so fun. 😛

Miscellaneous:

• Revlon Colorstay Creme Eye Shadow in 720 Chocolate – $7
I’ve been hearing so much about these! My MAC Paint Pots are getting dried out so I’m hoping this will be a good replacement.
• Revlon Colorstay Concealer in Light Medium 03 – $6
This came along for the ride from my saleevent.com order – I’ve heard good things about this.

• Mediheal N.M.F Aquaring Effect Serum – $15
My serum stash is getting dangerously low and I was glad to find this at Winners. I’ve tried sheet masks from this brand before and I loved them.
• L’Oreal Voluminous Lash Paradise mascara – $8
The hype surrounding this mascara is unreal. I haven’t even tried the Too Face Better Than Sex mascara which this is supposedly a good dupe of. I likely will try them in September but if you’re itching for comparisons and reviews, please check out these excellent posts: Polished & Inspired, and Sophie in Wonderland (the UK version has way prettier tube design!)

• Bath & Body Works Jasmine & Green Apple Clay Body Scrub
• Bath & Body Works Waikiki Beach Coconut Sand & Sea Salt Scrub
My friend needed a few more bucks to get her over the minimum purchase to qualify for a coupon so I helped her out! 😛

• Tigi Bed Head Foxy Curls Extreme Curl Mousse x2
I found more of these on clearance! I finished one of these in May and I had it on my favourites list from earlier this year. Smells like banana Runts – need I say more?

• MAC Pro palette (medium) and inserts (6 shadows + 2 blushes)
I had some leftover money on a MAC gift card so I redeemed for these. I didn’t know the medium size palette existed until I saw a display with it! In total, these cost me $10. Check the palette out in action:

Eyeshadows L to R from top to bottom: Patina, All That Glitters, Romp (see these swatched here), Woodwinked, Sable, and Satin Taupe; Blushes top to bottom: Buff, and Blush All Day.

The medium size is the same height as the large size palette, but about 2/3 the width.

And the last item of what I got myself:

• Charlotte Tilbury Instant Look in a Palette in Beauty Glow – $85
I got it!!! I toyed with getting this for ages and was able to use a Nordstrom gift card for this! ❤ If you haven’t heard of this palette, go check out Cat’s post on it! That’s how my obsession started…

Gifts

The great thing about being my birthday month is getting beauty items as gifts! 😀

Firstly, remember the swap that I did with my birthday twin, Joyce?

I’ve now eaten all of the food goodies and they were delicious!

I had to share with the SO but he made sure he did not eat the last ones. 😉

I also received a SURPRISE birthday parcel in the mail, from Dannii of A Beauty Thing blog!  She sent me:

• Berrisom Oops! Tint Cheek Cushion in #02 Cream Peach
• Nügg Face Mask Hydrating
• Neogen Naturals White Truffle Hydramax Knit Mask
• Leaders H2Oh My Gosh! Rainwater Mask
• Flutter Makeup Sponge
I was so surprised to receive these! Thank you so much Dannii! ❤ I can’t wait to try everything. Dannii and I did a swap earlier this year – it’s so fun to receive things in the mail!

Sephora Birthday gift:

Most people have seen this by now – the set includes travel sized Amazonian Clay 12-hour Blush in Paaarty and Tarteist Creamy Matte Lip Paint in Birthday Suit.  There’s also an option to choose Fresh skincare instead. And I’m really proud of myself for not buying anything at Sephora when I picked this up at the store!

Other items I received:

• Clinique Sonic Purifying Cleansing Brush Set
My friend bought me this after I mentioned I was considering one when they were on sale for 50% off at Hudson’s Bay. She said I’m difficult to shop for since I have everything (not true!) so she ordered this for me. I’ve been using this for a few weeks now and I really like it! My skin hasn’t been irritated by it at all – I’ve read comparison reviews online saying that this is more gentle than the Clarisonic which is a good thing for me.

• Charlotte Tilbury Cheek to Chic blush in Sex on Fire
• Charlotte Tilbury Matte Revolution lipstick in Bond Girl
My friend was with me when I bought the Instant Look in a Palette (above) and she was toying with getting one for herself. She looked online at CT’s site and found that they were having a summer sale and the “Seductive Beauty” version was on sale for only $51! So she ordered it for herself, and then asked me to choose 5 items I liked from CT – she would select only 2 of the 5 to “surprise” me for my birthday! 😀 (for those curious, the other 3 items I chose were: Lip Cheat lip liner in Pillow Talk, Colour Chameleon in Dark Pearl, and Airbrush Flawless Finish Powder in #2)

• LUSH Big Shampoo
• LUSH Big Solid Conditioner
• LUSH Sea Spray Hair Mist
My coworker and I went to LUSH during lunch one day since I wanted to replenish the Big shampoo (spoiler alert, my first tub that I got is going to be in m next Trash Stash and favourites list – I love this stuff so much). She was picking up a few items and insisted on paying for my stuff as my birthday present. She said it was a relief that she didn’t have to choose items for me. Ha!

And recently I showed the online hauling that I did during July:

The majority of them were with birthday money. The only items I paid for were the Glossier items, which came to $37.

Phew… that’s everything for June and July.  I had $198.30 in my budget and I spent $197 (excluding non-makeup / skincare items, and the items I used gift cards for, and gifts). Here’s the math:

I was kind of surprised how much I had spent on face masks! But, I did get 47 masks in total so that works out to be $1.89 per mask.

So I managed to stay within budget! Even though I have $1.30 in my balance, I won’t be carrying it over. 😉 I have a long stretch of No-Buy months coming up! August (almost over!), September AND October are No-Buy months so that I can shop in November (Black Friday) and December (Holidays)… 😛  Wish me luck! Have tried any of the items I got?  What beauty items have you picked up lately?

  1. Woah so many facemasks! You well replenished your stock!
I tried to get some of the Gel Couture Bridal collection ones and they went out of stock very quickly here, I’ve been keeping my eye out but haven’t seen them make a return. That My Little Pony Colour is gorgeous – Going to have a google of swatches and see if that ones a need!
I’d heard very mixed things about the Clinique brush – I heard that the handle vibrated, but not the head itself? I’ve never actually seen a demo one myself to check!
Bond Girl is the next CT lipstick I want to get! Had a big love affair this summer with the one I bought for the wedding!
Got a review going up tomorrow of the Lash Paradise – or as we have it called Paradise Extatic (Bleh!) I like it for a drugstore mascara!

    1. The Essie Gel Couture Bridal collection screamed my name! It was a challenge to not buy the whole collection.

The handle of the Clinique brush kind of vibrates but it’s similar to how an electric toothbrush handle vibrates.

Is the Lash Paradise really called Paradise Extatic there?!! 😆 I guess that offsets the prettier tube design. I finally tried the Too Face Better Than Sex Mascara over the weekend and it’s nice. I have to try it a few more times to form a solid opinion. Then I’ll try the L’Oreal to compare.

  2. Omg what a haul! Love the sheer amount of face masks! You needed to replenish them though after your 30 day challenge😉😊 The Essie Lace To The Alter and CG nail polishes are stunning. Just love all that you got! Glad you liked youe surproses😊😙 xc

    1. Thank YOU so much for the surprise present! I can’t wait to try everything. I almost opened up that cute sponge but I’m going to wait – don’t want to remove it from the packaging yet! 😛

  3. Thank you so much for linking my Paradise review! I actually prefer the US packaging! You did amazing this month you got so much and stayed under budget! I cant believe how much the Charlotte Tilbury look in a palette is in Canada its only £29 in the UK! Great haul 🙂

    1. The CT palette is only £29 in the UK!?! 😮 I guess it helps that she’s British!
I just learned that you’ve moved to the Bahamas! How are you liking it there so far?

      1. Yeah i worked out the equivalent is $46 CAD so it’s very expensive in Canada! Its lovely thanks a lot to get used to though!

  4. I haven’t seen those Essie Gel Couture bridal collection polishes yet (then again, I haven’t been to Shoppers in a while). They look so pretty! I also need that China Glaze polish in my life! Is it more of a top coat?

The packaging of the yogurt face mask is adorable. It looks like actual yogurt!

Oh my gosh, the jasmine and green apple body scrub sounds like it would smell so good. I generally like BBW body scrubs, they’re quite good!

I didn’t know that MAC had that size of palette either, but I wish I did before I bought that massive 15-pan palette! How perfect this size is for travel.

The Charlotte Tilbury products are GORGEOUS. I’m jealous! 😉

      1. Thanks! I had to keep track of every penny on my phone to make sure I didn’t go over…
August hasn’t been bad because I’ve been so busy but I think Sept – Oct will be a challenge!

        Liked by 1 person

    1. The China Glaze can be worn alone but looks better layered – see how it looks over a dark base:

There was a blueberry scrub BBW from the same range that I wanted but they only had a tester and none left in stock!

I LOVE the MAC medium sized palette! I’ve been using it all the time since it houses all my MAC favs. Get it!

Makeup as birthday presents are the BEST. 😀

  5. Well, you’ve seen my latest collective haul. I did go to Ulta last weekend to get my bday palette and use my $10 bday coupon to grab a few things, mainly new bottles of my Makeup Revolution setting spray and Mario Badescu face spray. But I did find the Gone Glamping polish from China Glaze’s outdoors collection from a couple years ago on clearance, so I grabbed that too.

  6. That birthday giveaway from Sephora is my favorite one by far. I use the blush often when I decide to put on makeup. I also have the Lash Paradise mascara. Still debating on whether I like it or not.

    1. That Tarte birthday blush looks really nice and the size is decent! It’d be good for travel.
I’ve just finally tried the Too Faced Better Than Sex mascara and I’m on the fence about it… will see how the L’Oreal compares.

  7. LOL now that is a haul! I think I say that on all your haul posts.

Wonderful stuff! Love seeing all the polish 😀 Hay Girl Hay looks fab! I recently picked up the ChG mini set for that collection, but it doesn’t have HGH in it.

Those MAC palettes all being $10 regardless of size really irks me. Still buy them, though. Hehehe.

    1. I had another of the China Glaze MLP collection in my hand (a blue / purple duochrome) but I know I won’t wear it enough to justify getting it but at least this topper is versatile.

I agree, MAC really should scale the prices according to the size! It’s silly. I do appreciate that they dropped the prices drastically a while back.

      1. Been wanting them since forever but we don’t have CT display here. I want to see them up close. Looks really beautiful!😍

  8. I’m also doing a no-buy as best as I can (not as regimented/scheduled as you!) so I’ve been helping myself stay in check by appying for free things on 08liter.com and by crossing my fingers for Influenster gifts! XD So far it’s working!!

Loved reading your post!! SO MANY GOODIES ❤

  9. I don’t know if you could have gotten any closer to your spending limit 😀 you found some screamin deals though. I’m especially looking forward to all those face mask reviews, that’s one of my favorite parts of your blog.

Essie Lace to the Altar looks AMAZING, how have I not seen anyone talk about this yet???

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Yes, I was tracking carefully all month. I had to pass up on a few items to keep to my budget – sacrifices were made! 😳 I hadn’t heard about the Essie Bridal collection at all until I saw them at the store. Lace to the Altar is so pretty, especially with a tan.

      Liked by 1 person

    1. I think CT is fairly reasonably priced for the quality. I’d rather get CT than say, Chanel, personally because at least CT is a makeup artist herself, and not just a designer brand, ya know?

  10. Those nail polishes are gorgeous! I would love to see the Essie and China Glaze and Essie and Cutex side by side on the nail. Both sets of colours look similar and I wonder how they compare.

I think I’ve seen adverts for those Revlon creme eyeshadows on TV, they look intriguing, is the texture like Maybelline Colour Tattoos?

The yoghurt mask sounds so fun!

The L’oreal mascara is one I’d like to try but I don’t think it has launched in NZ yet. A few months ago I had three mascaras in my drawer and now I’m down to one. I’m not sure whether to stick with what I know/like or branch out a little. Do you have any favourite mascaras?

    Liked by 1 person

    1. I know, the Essie and Cutex are really similar. In fact, I’m sure I have at least 3 more similar shades in my stash! I should do a comparison post! 💡

I’ve heard the Revlon ones are better than the Maybelline Colour Tattoo – when Maybelline first came out with those, I went nuts and at one point owned 10 of them. But I ended up having to throw them out because they dried out quickly in the pot. I hope the Revlon one lasts longer…

I’m always game to try new mascaras but I love CoverGirl LashBlast Volume (in the orange tube). I mostly stick to drugstore mascaras since I don’t like to keep open ones for too long. Another drugstore one I like is the Maybelline Lash Sensational. 🙂

      Liked by 1 person

      1. I for one would be interested in a comparison post of the nail polishes 🙂

I bought two Colour Tattoos a few years ago and the colours are so pretty but a pain to work with. They feel crumbly and dry and I need to bin them! Maybe I’ll test the Revlon ones in store to see what they’re like.

I loved the Lash Sensational mascara from the giveaway and it is one I am considering purchasing myself. I will have a look for the CoverGirl one online and find out a bit more about it too 😊

  11. Wow impressive haul!! While I go gaga over your Charlotte Tilbury, I spotted those Tony Moly masks. I love those, I saw some in our TK maxx, but for £2.99 each! So expensive.
Ah i love the look of CT bond girl 😍😍

    1. I’ve only tried a couple of the TonyMoly masks in Aloe and Makgeolli versions – they were just ok but I’ve heard good things about the tomato version so I’ll see! Yes, some places sell them for a lot – rip off.
I didn’t really have that CT lipstick on my radar but lots of rave reviews so I hope I like it – normally I don’t go for matte lipsticks but I read it’s hydrating.

  12. Yay, missed reading you! What a great haul. I actually feel for people who buy presents for you if they want to avoid buying you something you already have, it makes better sense to pay for what you chose😉 I can’t find 2 stage Montagne Jeuness masks here but maybe I am not searching hard enough (as I am trying no/low buy) 😊

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Yes, I do think it’s the best of both worlds to have me choose my own presents instead of them guessing. Sometimes it is fun to be surprised (but only good surprises!)
I think the Montagne Jeunesse 2 Stages masks might be discontinued! I haven’t seen them in stores, only online…

  14. Wow so many things with the money you spent! How are you liking that CT palette? Have you started using it yet? 😛

Everyone is talking about the Lash Paradise mascara! But I have a few too many mascaras on-the-go at the moment to bother with another one. Maybe towards end of the year.

Very impressed with the amount of face masks you got! I’m also starting to contemplate buying more but I’m trying to use up some of my clay masks first. (Giving myself better reason to buy products nowadays, lol) XD

    1. I don’t like to keep mascaras too long and I typically have 2 opened so I’ll hopefully get around to wear the L’Oreal one later in Sept.

I keep thinking I’ll stop buying sheet / single masks but they’re so convenient and soothing. It’s good that you’re trying to us up what you have first before buying! We all need to remember to do that…

  15. I’ve only bought Urban Decay Naked Heat, some Catrice products that were new and the European version of that Lash Paradise mascara which finally launched here. I also got and 8 hour cream which I’ve been dying to try for years and now found it at a 7 euro value deal at my drugstore.

    Liked by 1 person

    1. You did well! The 8 hour cream you got – is it the Elizabeth Arden one? I had it before and I didn’t like the smell but apparently they offer an unscented version now. I hope you are enjoying everything you got!

  16. OH MY GOODNESS! I need to start walking my friends around the Charlotte Tillbury counter and casually mention that I want some makeup from there! LOL!

Also, wow, that’s a lot of masks! I have about 3-4 sheet masks and 2 jars in my vanity so I’m totally envying everything you got! Your finds at Winners always impress me, $12.99 for the Karuna masks! I would want to try the Karma Kit!

I’ve heard so much hype around the lash paradise. I’m not the biggest fan of Better Than Sex so I didn’t really care for this, but I’ve seen so many video reviews that compare the two and many reviewers have said it does dupe or even performs better than BTS! Hopefully you like it!

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Haha! It helps when it’s your birthday too! 😉 I had no expectations at all but they prefer that I choose stuff for myself and just pay for it. I completely understand that mindset – I think at this point in our lives, guessing is less fun than wanting to get someone exactly what they want!

I went back to Winners to see if I could get more of those Karuna masks but they were all scooped up! Keep your eyes open though – sometimes they replenish.

I finally opened up the Too Faced Better Than Sex mascara and I’m underwhelmed. It’s definitely NOT better than sex! 😛 I find the mascara clumpy and flaky and doesn’t build great length. I hope the L’Oreal outperforms it…

      1. I think it’s a really great idea for friends/family to just get the things you need rather than surprise you, that’s why I get everyone I know to sign-up for elfster, lol! I never really thought of just taking them to a counter at the Bay and just saying “get me anything from here”, but I’m totally going to do that now!!

Ah darn! I just need to try my luck at Winners. I will stop by next time and ask an associate when they restock in during the week. Maybe I’d get something good that way.

I guess too bad on the BTS – I never liked that mascara anyways. I’m a Benefit kinda girl, but I really love the Princess Lash from Essence. So good, and only like $3!

I loooove those Essie gel polishes! What gorgeous shades! I’ve only tried one of their gel polishes but I enjoyed the formula!

Those Karuna masks are excellent! I’m not sure if you’ve tried them before or not but they are one of the best sheet masks I’ve tried. Hope you like them!

    1. I’m in love with those Essie Gel polishes too. I’m slowly growing my collection of them. Here’s the first one I tried:

Review: Essie Gel Couture Pinned Up & Top Coat

If you haven’t tried the Gel Couture top coat – I highly recommend it!

And I’ve since got 4 more colours! Some days I think about tossing all my other polishes and only wearing those but that would mean tossing out 700 perfectly good nail polishes… 😳

I’ve not tried Karuna masks but it’s good to know they’re excellent! I read some reviews online and they were all good. Can’t wait to try.

It’s so hard to get rid of polishes! I had some that I was holding on to for like 8 years and it was such a sad night when I forced myself to trash them. 😂

  18. That China Glaze Hay Girl Gay is so pretty! 😍 I love iridescent glitter, especially in the winter. You have enough face masks to keep you going a while there, the two stage ones sound interesting and I might have to see if I can find any if those rubber like ones, they sound like they’d be fun to take off at the end.

  20. That is a killer deal on the Karuna masks! i love those things but dang are they pricey at Sephora. I’m intrigued (and slightly terrified of that knit mask. What does that even mean?? I also want to know what you think of the Charlotte Tilburry items. I keep being tempted by her line but so far I’ve resisted actually buying anything from it.

    1. I was quite proud of myself for finding those Karuna masks. 😀
The knit mask isn’t like a wool blanket over your face, I googled it and the texture of the mask has some stretch so that it is more form fitting over the face. I hope it works well!
I own a few CT items already – a lipstick (decent, except the shade I got has shimmer in it and feels a bit gritty), an eye shadow quad (nice but not mind-blowingly great), face brushes (just ok, they shed). I think I’ve made poor choices in my colour selections so far – I’m hoping these will be amazing (I did more research on this selection).

      Liked by 1 person

      1. I can’t decide if I’m relieved or disappointed that the knit mask isn’t actually like a blanket. Probably relieved lol.
I have never heard anything but rave reviews of CT which always makes me suspicious honestly. I’m interested to hear how these new additions stack up to your previous CT purchases!

    1. I think low / no buying is just forming new habits. I used think that if I didn’t buy something RIGHT NOW, it will disappear forever and I’ve missed out. Now I realize things always get re-released somewhere down the road. Makeup hasn’t fundamentally changed THAT much over the years – just new format, new names, new configuration…
