Trash Stash: August to October-ish 2017: Part 2 (Body and Hair Care, Makeup)

Here’s the 2nd part of my slacker Trash Stash:

Bath products are fun to photograph since they’re more colourful. 🙂

Body Care

I Love… Mango & Papaya Bubble Bath and Shower Creme – 500ml
The scent of this is outstanding – a fresh mix of mango and papaya smell but leaning more on the mango side. It lathers well and truly moisturizes the skin without leaving a residue.  This is made in the UK and actually contains real fruit extracts.  I hauled this during Hauluary sales – I opened this in July and it took me almost a full 2 months to finish up this big bottle!

It’s cute how the description for how to use this product is in first person. “I am not a food; please do not eat me” 😆

My only gripe is the gel has a runny consistency which means more wasted product as it runs off my skin / sponge. I’m currently using the Raspberry & Blackberry scent from this line and the consistency is thicker.

Kiss My Face Olive Soap – $8 for 3-4oz bars

I’m never not going to use this gif that I created a while back! This is my stand by bar soap. It’s very moisturizing and effective, and doesn’t have a strong scent.
Stash worthiness: 9/10     Repurchase: Yes

I finished this just in time – the expiry is on November 22nd

LUSH Santa’s Belly Shower Jelly – $7.95 for 100g
This is a fun shower gel but it wasn’t without its pitfalls – most of which are cosmetic rather than performance. First, it’s a red colour so when I break off bits to use, it actually looks like blood clots. :/ Also, when rinsing, the dye runs in the shower also making it look like blood. I accidentally stored the tub close to my WHITE fabric shower curtain and the jelly stained it. The scent is a mixture of apple, grape and star anise but I found the star anise to drown out the fruity smells.
Stash worthiness: 6/10     Repurchase: No

The Body Shop Virgin Mojito Body Butter – 200ml
I decided to use this during the warmer weather since I loved the Soap & Glory Sugar Crush one so much. TBS one pales in comparison to the S&G one but it’s not terrible relative to other TBS Body Butters. The scent is just slightly “off” but it had a mellow lime and mint smell.
Stash worthiness: 7/10     Repurchase: No

Bath & Body Works Foaming Hand Soaps in Kitchen Lemon & Mint, Sundrenched Vineyard, and White Pear & Fig – $6.50 for 259ml
My favourite out of these is the Sundrenched Vineyard – it’s such a juicy grape scent, I wished I had bought more of this but of course, it was a limited time collection. The Kitchen Lemon is a scent we always have around for the kitchen.
Stash worthiness: 9/10     Repurchase: Yes

Bath & Body Works Waikiki Beach Coconut Aloe Gel Lotion – $15.00 for 166ml
I stocked up on a bunch of these fantastic lightweight gel lotions from 2015 – good thing too because BBW didn’t re-release them again.
Stash worthiness: 10/10     Repurchase: No (because I can’t)

Bath & Body Works Waikiki Beach Coconut Ultra Shea Body Cream – $13 for 226g
I much prefer these Ultra Shea formulas than BBW’s regular body lotion. I do tend to use up these tubes super quickly though. One tube lasts me around 3 weeks max.
Stash worthiness: 9/10     Repurchase: Yes

LUSH Sympathy For the Skin Body Lotion – $30 for 240g
This tub’s label may read Refresher Shower Jelly but it did hold body lotion that was decanted from my friend’s tub. She didn’t care for it and I refused to take her whole tub so she gave me half of it. Why she didn’t like this was that she thought it would smell more like banana as per the description. I agree, it doesn’t smell very banana-y but that’s precisely why I do like it. To me, it mainly smells like almond and vanilla which I love. This cream is fairly lightweight as far as LUSH formulas go – the lotion sinks into my skin well but forms a protective layer. I curse my friend for getting me hooked because it’s quite pricey and I went though this tub in just a couple of weeks.
Stash worthiness: 9/10     Repurchase: Yes

Bath & Body Works Wallflower in Peach Bellini and Waikiki Beach Coconut Refills – $6.50 each
I try to be seasonally appropriate when I use these room oils so I tend to use more tropical scents during the warmer months. The Peach Bellini scent has a great throw but the Waikiki Beach Coconut, not so much.
Stash worthiness: 8/10     Repurchase: Yes to the Peach Bellini

Neutrogena Cool Dry Sport Sunscreen SPF 60 – $15 for 147ml
Good sunscreen for the body. I typically pick up the Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry Touch type which is slightly less greasy than this one but I wanted to try something different.
Stash worthiness: 8/10     Repurchase: Maybe

Orly Naitrition Nail Strengthener & Growth Treatment – $17 for 18ml
Here’s a full review on this product which was featured as one of my Project Focus pan items. This product works very well for me in preventing nail peelies. It took me over a year to finally use this up as I stopped using it during the summer months since my nails weren’t peeling at that time.
Stash worthiness: 9/10     Repurchase: Yes

Herbacin Kamille Hand Cream – $4 for 75ml
I showed this in the “How I do My Manicures” post. This is a very silicone-y cream which I only use at night time. I find that it doesn’t so much as provide hydration as it creates a protective barrier so whatever hydration I have in my skin doesn’t evaporate. The scent doesn’t bother the SO which is a bonus.
Stash worthiness: 7/10     Repurchase: Maybe

Hair Care

LUSH Big Shampoo – $29.95 for 310g
I freaking LOVE this shampoo so much! It cleanses my hair so thoroughly and leaves no residue whatsoever. The experience is a bit odd though since it’s a grainy texture with actual bits of salt in the shampoo. A tiny bit (less than a dime size) is needed and it lathers up like a mofo. I’d caution that the formula might be too harsh for colour treated hair or dry hair that tends to knot up (I noted my hair did get slightly more tangled while using this). I would give this a perfect score if not for 2 things: the tub design is a bit annoying to scoop the product out (I always end up getting some water droplets in the tub), and the high price. This tub lasted me around 3 months with nearly daily use. I’ve already got a new replacement tub of this which is waiting to be opened.
Stash worthiness: 9/10     Repurchase: Yes

L’Oreal Hair Expertise Total Repair 5 Repairing Mask – $10 for 300ml
This is a great hair mask – I primarily apply this on the ends of my hair as a rich hair conditioner. It leaves my hair less frizzy and doesn’t weigh my hair down. The tub was a bit of a pain to use though – the lid was also difficult to open and close.
Stash worthiness: 9/10     Repurchase: Yes

Curl Keeper x2 – $17 for 250ml
Simply irreplaceable! I finished two of these during this time.
Stash worthiness: 10/10     Repurchase: Yes

Makeup

Maybelline SuperStay Better Skin Foundation in 25 Nude Beige – $18 for 30ml
I reviewed this in detail here.  This shade is a little dark for me but I was able to make it work by mixing a bit of the shade 20 Classic Ivory which I also own.  Sadly, this foundation is discontinued now (although not the corresponding concealer, oddly).  I was tempted to stock up on this but I need to learn to let things go!  At least I have the bottle of Classic Ivory to use up.
Stash worthiness: 9/10     Repurchase: No (not because I don’t want to!)

Call me naughty but once a powder is down to a thin ring around the edges, I cannot be bothered to dig out the product with my brush. Plus, I think it damages my brush bristles trying to dig into the product.

L.A. Colors Pressed Powder in Beige – $2 for 9g
Great discovery from the $20 Makeup Challenge. I prefer to use during the warmer months – in the colder months, this can look dry on my skin.
Stash worthiness: 8/10     Repurchase: Yes

Quo Face Blotting Papers – $10 for 50 sheets
The concept of this is ripped off from the Too Cool For School Dinoplatz Dear Brachiosaurus Blotting Paper, with the adhesive on the sponge to pick up each piece of blotting paper. The execution of this isn’t good – the papers themselves feel like wrapping tissue and I needed at least 2 piece per use to blot my skin. The adhesive on the sponge did not stick to the sheets either.
Stash worthiness: 2/10     Repurchase: No

A bunch of eye makeup empties:

Integrate Cat Look Liquid Eye Liner in BR660 Brown – ~$12
This is a Shiseido drugstore brand that I hauled from my Japan trip last year. I was really psyched to get this as it was highly rated online at a reasonable price.

The good: long lasting formula and the brush nib is one of the softest I’ve used, and application is a breeze. The bad: the line isn’t as fine as I prefer, the brown colour is so dark that it’s nearly black, and it dried out or got used up super quickly. Typically I can use a liquid for about 6 months but this liner started drying up at around 2 months.
Stash worthiness: 6/10     Repurchase: No

How the Daiso Brow pencil looked in the original package – the one I used up is the Brown shade, shown on the right.

Daiso Eye Brow Pencil in Brown – ¥100 (~$1.15 CAD)

I bought this in Japan from Daiso which is their dollar store. This was surprisingly good. It’s similar in appearance to the Shu Uemura Brow Sword which I reviewed here. I found the colour to be slightly warmer than what I normally wear but it worked fine for the summer months. I did find the formula to be ever so slightly waxy which sometimes stuck my brow hairs together. It took me about 2 months to use up this pencil – I guess for $1, it’s not bad at all. This product was made in Korea.
Stash worthiness: 7/10     Repurchase: Maybe

Max Factor MasterPiece Max Mascara in Velvet Black – $6 for 7.2ml (Winners)
This mascara is nearly perfection – it gives volume and length, doesn’t clump, doesn’t flake, doesn’t smear, and it holds a curl. The only downside is the floppy wand head – the joint where the wand stick connects to the brush head is flexible which allows the wand to bend and flex.

I had to get used to this – at first I found it difficult to apply the mascara onto my lashes with a floppy wand, I ended up with a lot of smears on my lids.  But I did get used to it over time.  If I find this at Winners again, I’d be sure to snatch more up!
Stash worthiness: 9/10     Repurchase: Yes

Essence Lash Princess False Lash Effect Mascara – $5 for 12ml
A cult favourite that came highly recommended and I can understand why – it’s super volumizing and provides insane length. But, it does give a rather spidery, unnatural appearance to the lashes. The worst part is how badly it smudges on me.  I managed to make it work by applying a clear waterproof mascara top coat (Clarins Double Fix’ Mascara).  Interestingly, this thing is made in Luxembourg for such an affordable product.
Stash worthiness: 5/10     Repurchase: No

CoverGirl Clump Crusher Lash Blast Mascara – $11 for 13.1ml
A staple in my mascara stash. It doesn’t give the most dramatic results but it defines the lashes and is totally clump free and smudge proof. I wore this while riding roller coasters and it did not budge!
Stash worthiness: 9/10     Repurchase: Yes

Etude House Dr. Mascara Fixer Volume Up Curl Fix – $7 for 6ml
Another staple in my makeup routine – I go through one of these probably every 2-3 months.. I’ve been having anxiety about the possibility of this product being discontinued. I think I have about 4 unopened tubes of this in my stash.
Stash worthiness: 10/10     Repurchase: Yes

Tools

H&M Precision Makeup Sponge – $5

One of my favourite blending sponges, but it’s starting to show signs of wear but no actual tears. This particular sponge lasted me almost 2 years with regular use – a great bargain purchase.
Stash worthiness: 10/10     Repurchase: Yes

Quo Sculpting Sponge (black) – $8
I bought this out of curiosity and it is terrible! The weird shape doesn’t blend anything well and the texture isn’t soft like the regular Quo purple gourd shaped ones that I like.
Stash worthiness: 3/10     Repurchase: No

Rexall KIT Sponge – $6
This is way too firm to be comfortable for blending. I tried using it a few times and it felt like I was punching my own face with the paw of a stuffed animal.
Stash worthiness: 2/10     Repurchase: No

AOA Wonder Blender in pink teardrop shape – $1USD / $1.35CAD
This came highly recommended and initially I really liked this sponge and even included it in my draft favourites list after using it for a couple of weeks. However, after 2 weeks, the darn thing ripped! 😦 The texture is great – squishy and blends makeup smoothly. It’s not as porous as the Beauty Blender but still provides a flawless blend. I’m not too upset about its short lifespan since it was $1USD but it’s kind of wasteful. I bought a bunch of these in various colours in my Miss A haul – I’m using the black teardrop version now and the texture is firmer but no tears so far after a month. I’m wondering if I got a dud so I may buy the pink teardrop one again.
Stash worthiness: 7/10     Repurchase: Maybe

Shiseido Cleansing Massage Brush – $29
I’ve owned this thing for ages. It’s super soft and floppy and feels pampering on the skin but it’s not too effective in providing exfoliation.  I mainly liked it because it lathered the Shiseido Extra Creamy Cleansing Foam so well. It is overpriced for what it is.
Stash worthiness: 6/10     Repurchase: No

Mr. Pumice Ultimate Pumi Bar – $3
I typically buy the regular Pumi Bar which has a uniform grit, but I decided to try this because hey, it has the word “ultimate” in the name. One side of this is an extra course grit which I disliked – it was crumbly and made my soles more catchy than smooth. I’ll stick to the non-ultimate Pumi bars from now on.
Stash worthiness: 5/10     Repurchase: Not this particular style

Make Up For Ever Velvet Powder Puff 120mm – $18
This thing is way too massive for my face – not really sure what I was thinking when I bought this. I wanted something to use for baking but this isn’t it. The flocked texture is very soft though.
Stash worthiness: 6/10     Repurchase: No

Lastly, an update on the Urban Decay eye shadow single in Naked – recall this is what it looked like back in July:

This is what it looks like now:

I’ve been using this shadow almost daily as my transition shade but I’m doubtful that I’ll finish this up completely year’s end.  Maybe I’m light-handed with my makeup application so I don’t use that much product per use?

Total number of empties in this post: 35.  Combined total for the past 3 months: 86!  My goal was to have 1 empty per day and I fell slightly short of that goal for 3 months (92 for August to October) – off by 6 items.  But, I think I still did ok.  If you haven’t read Part 1 of my Trash Stash, here it is.  Have you tried any of these items?

PS. It’s less than a month till Christmas! The blog has its festive colours back. 😀

  1. The Orly nail treatment sounds like something I need😊 I have never tried H&M make up range and it sounds like I finally should so maybe try the sponges after I use the ones that are in my stash.
Love reading your empties, really missed them!😘

    1. Thanks! Empties posts take a while to compile but they’re actually a very good reference guide for myself in the future. 🙂
The H&M makeup range is quite good – it’s too bad they reduced the assortment at the stores here.

  2. I don’t think I’ve tried many of these, a very impressive using up post even if you didn’t quite reach your goal. I don’t think I go through that much eye makeup in a year let around 3 months 😆 I’ve been meaning to do my post from September but it feels a bit late now!

    1. It’s never too late to post! I’ve been keeping literal garbage at my place since August! 😛 Fingers crossed that at the end of the year I’ll net out to reach 365 empties since earlier this year I exceeded my monthly goals.

  3. If only you could test out mascara on a roller coaster all the time eh. 😂😂
I did some damage in LUSH today which is not cool because I should be on a spending ban but in order to keep my eczema at bay, Dream Cream is the only thing that does my skin justice, especially now that it’s winter. Even though it’s quite pricey, I can’t not have it. I would like to try Sympathy for the Skin in the future, as well as Sleepy which seems to be talked about a lot lately.

I have that Max Factor mascara too I think but it’s not my favourite, it’s okay for me. I remember I adored the gold packaged one though years ago so I might buy that one again to see if I still feel the same about it.
Really like the look of the brush on the Etude House mascara! Shame it’s discontinued though but hopefully they have something similar in their product line?

    1. Sorry I should clarify that Etude House mascara base isn’t discontinued, I just live in fear of the possibility of it being discontinued! 😛 It always happens to me. The other mascara base that I loved is the Shiseido one but it costs 3x more!

I tried Dream Cream a little while back but I didn’t like it. I had high hopes as my friend recommended it to me but I found it to feel sticky and didn’t absorb in my skin. So funny you mentioned Sleepy. I’m just finishing that one up now! It is very nice!

      1. Oh good! Did I read it wrong then? lol I must check but doesn’t matter, that can be added to my wish list too. 😁

Everyone has different tastes! I see lots of people talk about the Snow Fairy stuff that LUSH do around Christmas, but I took a whiff and it’s way too sweet for me! Would love to check Sleepy out soon but it was out-of-stock when I shopped, so next time!

  4. The Santa’s Belly shower gel looks so pretty in the tub (red and GOLD) but your description of it in the shower sounds disgusting…hahah. I’m also pretty sure Jesus made your batch.
I can almost imagine the scent of that I Love…Mango and Papaya shower gel. Yum! Did you get it from Shoppers? The brand/packaging looks super familiar but I can’t place where I’ve seen it before. I don’t like the idea that it’s runny though! I hate soaps like that.

    1. I was so looking forward to using that Santa’s Belly shower jelly but I did not anticipate the side effects of it looking like BLOOD. And yes lol, it could have been Jesus who created that, the picture definitely looks like it! 😆
Yup, that “I love…” range is from Shoppers. I never paid any attention to it before and truth be told, I always thought it was a low quality line (not sure why? Maybe because they’re often in holiday sets?). It’s weird that the different scents seem to have different consistencies.

  5. Stashy how on earth did the I Love…shower gel last 2 months? I must eat the stuff, I get through one to two shower gels a week🙈 The Mango & Papaya scent sounds amazing, I haven’t tried that one. The Santas Belly I really like. I find at least in the UK it’s very apple scented😊 Still loving the Wakiki Beach Coconut body spray you sent me. I was so sad I could only get winter bits in Bath & Body Works NYC, as the summer stuff looks and smells so good. Xx

    Liked by 1 person

    1. That is a 500ml bottle?!! aka half a litre? How much are you using each time??? I probably use about 2 tbsp per use. I don’t take baths, mind you. Also, shower gels isn’t the only thing I use in the shower – I use soap too.
I was really hoping the Santa’s Belly would be more apple-y! Too bad.
I generally prefer summer scents myself too.

      Liked by 1 person

      1. 😂 500ml lasts a while but most shower gels are pretty small. I could use half a bottle in one wash! There’s potential that size could last me 2 weeks. Aah I mostly use shower gels, soaps last a lot longer if I buy them. That’s a shame. I wonder if the scent just varies a bit place to place. If you’re in the UK one Xmas you’ll have to a smell comparison☺😂 I do as well. I like coconut and fruity smells. I guess there’s winter berry scemts and plum, but I like those less x

  7. Covergirl Clump Crusher is my gold standard for mascara! I’m not a huge makeup wearer, but I always have a tube of it on hand.

I have to ask… how do you use up a tube of body cream in 3 weeks? I wish I could do that, have about a BILLION lotions and creams to get through.

I’m so disappointed about the Santa’s Belly jelly. It’s in my favorite Lush scent family (the apple scent) but I would hate the anise taking over. I’ll stick to my old bottle of So White shower gel that is somehow still going strong.

    1. I like to keep a tube of both the CG Clump Crusher and Lash Blast Volume (orange tube) on hand – both HG material!

I think I’m really liberal in my application of body cream… I slather that stuff on every morning. I even keep a silicone spatula in my bathroom so I can reach my back on my own! 😆

Oh wow, I had not heard about So White shower gel – just looked it up and I need to have a smell of it at the store.

      Liked by 1 person

      1. The spatula idea is really smart, haha!

Sadly, at least in the US, the So White shower gel is not around this year :[ all good things must come to an end, I suppose…

  8. My H&M sponge is still going strong! Glad to see I’ve hopefully got around another year and a bit left in mine 🙂

The I Love… products sound fun! Do they just do shower creams?

I’ve smelt the Virgin Mojito range from TBS briefly but I wasn’t that keen, maybe I need to have another sniff.

The foaming hand soaps from Bath & Body Works sound nice!

The Sympathy body lotion from LUSH sounds good too, I don’t think I’d want a banana lotion either 😛

Congratulations on finishing up so much!

  9. Oh you’re in the Christmas Spirit early with your background!
I definitely need to find somewhere that stocks those shower gels, I’ve always seen them about but thought the packaging was slightly tacky, and thought it would be a bit cheap feeling – I’ll have to check them out although that scent way wouldn’t be my favourite, I don’t really like tropical scents! Apart from the Mojito scent from TBS, how dare you describe it as slightly off! I didn’t manage to snag anything with it’s rerelease here this year, it pretty much sold out immediately 😦
I remember you telling me about that Max Factor mascara, I need to hunt it down!

    1. I try to get the Christmas theme up for a solid month to make the most out of the logo & banner! 😛 I keep thinking I’ll revamp it but I’m too lazy right now. 😛

I agree, the I Love line has somewhat tacky packaging – I used to equate the brand with dollar store quality. But I’m impressed! The one I’m using right now – Raspberry & Blackberry – is so juicy and rich. I think I like them better than Body Shop stuff! That body butter smelled like someone diluted real mojito with milk… 😮

    1. Thanks! 😀 I’m glad I’m not the only one who doesn’t completely finish that ring of powder – to me it’s not worth the effort. I guess I’m wasteful like that… but the cost of replacing a brush is more costly!

First of all: “like I was punching my own face with the paw of a stuffed animal” Hahahahahaaaaaha!

Happy to hear you like the I Love Mango + Papaya shower gel. I’ve gone through the body scrub and 1 of the body mists – but I’ll try the shower gel and the body butter (which have been living in my stash for ages) soon.

    1. I hope my description of that makeup blending sponge would deter people from making the same mistake! OUCH, even stuffed animal paws hurt!

The scent of the I Love… items are so great. I think they’re even better than Body Shop now!

    1. It’s too bad about the liners drying up so quickly! One that I’ve found to last a LONG time is from KissMe Heroine Make Eyeliner, also Japanese – one of them lasted more than a year!
We had the Eucalyptus mint hand wash – we really enjoyed it, so refreshing!
