Black Friday Haul 2017

I succumbed to beauty deals on Black Friday, after all. I didn’t go into Black Friday with any plans (I had taken the day off work) and wasn’t particularly keen on any of the previewed deals shown online. I woke up super early and arrived at the mall even before 7am – I was surprised that there were quite a few shoppers at the mall this year compared to last year. I keep hearing about the death of bricks and mortar stores, in addition to the decline in the enthusiasm for Black Friday sales. But based on my non-scientific observations, it was busier, especially so early in the morning.ย  Here’s what I hauled:

I’m pleased to say that the majority of the items are for replenishment purposes. Of course, some were absolute impulse buys. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Sephora

At first I was going to skip Sephora but habits die hard.

I was at the store right when it opened and there was a rush of people bee-lining for the Black Friday sets – I kind of hung back to survey what I really wanted.

โ€ข Benefit Bestsellers Blowout – $20 – contains full sized They’re Real! Mascara in Black, 4g Hoola bronzer, and 2.5 mL High Beam

โ€ข Clinique Double Cleansing Detox – $12 x2 – contains 15ml Take The Day Off Cleansing Balm and 30 mL City Block Purifying Charcoal Cleansing Gel

โ€ข BITE Beauty Mini Multistick Duo in Cashew and Papaya – $18

I got 2 of the Clinique sets and shared with a friend – she likes the Charcoal Cleansing Gel and I like the Cleansing Balm so we swapped out each. ๐Ÿ™‚ The other items I’ve been wanting to try – I like having a small size of the Benefit Hoola, since I’ll never finish a full sized bronzer.

The Face Shop

The store was 50% off until 10am so I took advantage to stock up on some items:

I must say, the sales associate who helped was super crabby and it was so early in the morning, I can only imagine how her mood was at the end of her shift.

โ€ข Chia Seed Hydrating Toner – $27ย  $13.50

โ€ข Konjac Jelly Cleansing Puff – $5ย  $2.50 x2

โ€ข Seed Cure Mascara Fixer – $15ย  $7.50
โ€ข Freshian Curling 01 Mascara – $6ย  $3

โ€ข Makeup Blender Sponge – $10ย  $5 x2

Belif Best Sellers On The Go includes 5 pieces:ย Creamy Cleansing Foam Moist 30ml, Beramot Herbal Extract Toner 20ml, Hungarian Water Essence 10ml, Moisturizing and Firming Eye Cream 5ml, The True Cream Moisturizing Bomb 10ml.

โ€ข Belif Best Sellers On The Go Kit – $25ย  $15

I’ve been so curious about Belif skincare, so it was good to try out their top products in a kit. That Chia Seed toner is one of the best ones I’ve tried (mentioned here in my Trash Stash). I haven’t talked about the The Face Shop’s Blender sponge on the blog yet, but it’s amazing! I think it has surpassed the Quo one for me. ๐Ÿ˜€ I haven’t tried those mascaras before but at those prices, it’s worth a try.

MAC

MAC was offering 25% off on nearly everything, to Select members only. They were signing people into the Select program on the spot so theoretically the discount was for everyone.

I had no plans to buy anything at first but after chatting up with a friendly makeup artist, I walked out with these:

โ€ข 266SH Small Angle Brush Short-handle – $24ย  $18

โ€ข Lip Scrubtious in Summery Berry and Candied Nectar – $19 eachย  $14.25 each

โ€ข Slow/Fast/Slow Dazzleshadow – $24ย  $18
โ€ข Haux single eye shadow refill – $8

โ€ข Select Extra Dimension x 2 Compact in #1 (Superb / Selected) – $42ย  $31.50

The only item that wasn’t on sale was the Haux eyeshadow refill pan, when I asked why, the MUA said, “they’re already only $8!” She’s got a point. ๐Ÿ˜›ย  I’ve had the shade Haux on my wish list for ages and this post by Dandygal just reminded me again.ย  Also, I haven’t been keeping up with MAC releases so I’d never seen either the Dazzleshadow or the Select Extra Dimension compact – both are super gorgeous formulas! โค It just goes to show how important it is to have a good sales associate – it’s the difference between me walking out empty handed and with a bagful of stuff I wasn’t planning on buying! ๐Ÿ˜›

Kiehl’s

I went a little nuts at Kiehl’s but in my defense these are all replenishment / consumables.

They were offering 20% off with $150+ purchase (15% otherwise), and they were giving $15 gift cards with each increment of $30 purchase redeemable in January.ย  I ended up with 8 gift cards (worth a total of $120)!

โ€ข Ultra Facial Cream 125ml – $63ย  $47.25
โ€ข Midnight Recovery Eye – $48ย  $36

โ€ข Amino Acid Shampoo 1L – $69ย  $51.75
โ€ขย Bath and Shower Liquid Body Cleanser in Coriander 1L – $59ย  $44.25
โ€ข Hand Cream in Coriander – $20ย  $15

You’ve likely heard me rave about each of these Kiehl’s skincare items. I’ve repurchased the Midnight Recovery Eye cream countless times, same with the Amino Acid Shampoo (I used up my last 1L bottle not long ago). The Ultra Facial Cream appeared in my best of list last year. I didn’t really need those Coriander items but I’ve mentioned my love of that scent before, right? It’s not common to find them, or the one litre size bottles (much better value).

Kiehl’s always give great samples and I got items that I’ve been curious to try: Ultra Facial Moisturizer (a more fluid version of the Cream), Ultra Facial Deep Moisture Balm (a more solid version of the Cream), and the Turmeric & Cranberry Seed Energizing Radiance Masque.

None of the offering at Nordstrom enticed me this year like they did last year, although I did run into another sales associate whole used to work at the Shiseido counter but now works at the Sulwhasoo and AmorePacific counters. I’ve scheduled a facial appointment with her to check out those lines (I never did end up going last time). At Hudson’s Bay, they had 10% off all prestige makeup but with Sephora’s recent VIB 20% off sale, that deal wasn’t tempting.

Story time: On Black Friday, my credit card was placed on security block due to “suspicious activities”. ๐Ÿ˜ฎ If by suspicious activities, they mean copious amounts of shopping, then I’m guilty as charged! ๐Ÿ˜† Thank goodness it happened at the tail end of my shopping spree (there was also fashion hauling, which I’ll do a separate post about) so it wasn’t too much of an inconvenience. It was a little embarrassing though, when your credit card declines – I’m sure the sales associate was placing judgement! ๐Ÿ˜› So I got home and called the credit card helpline. I was informed that the security representative would like to talk to me about recent suspicious activities on my card. They wanted to verify every single one of my transactions through the day to make sure I did, in fact, use my card at all of these stores. What follows was the security guy listing out my purchases, “At 7:08am you purchased $ at Sephora. Whoa, that’s early! Then 10 minutes after that you spent $ at The Face Shop. About 30 minutes later, you used your card at MAC. Then 30 minutes after that, you shopped at Kiehl’s…” And on and on. Every. Single. Purchase. Yup, I shopped more than I normally do. It’s Black Friday, dude!ย ๐Ÿ˜Ž I confirmed all my purchases and he unblocked my credit card.ย  Phew, just in time for me to place some orders online. ๐Ÿ˜‰

How did you fare on Black Friday?ย  Have you used any of the items I got?

  1. Hahaha! Same ๐Ÿ˜€ I got a call from my bank on Black Friday – it wasn’t until I had gotten home and placed an order online that they put a hold on my card though. I had to tell them that it was all me, hilarious. I have looked at Kiehl’s shampoo a few times but always pass, you must like it though!!

  2. LOL! Hilarious that the guy from the credit card company listed out all of your purchases! I wonder if they had to make many of those calls that Friday…

You got so much amazing stuff during Black Friday! I felt like I was more interested in the sales last year than this year…I barely bought anything this year! Also, I had meant to take the day off but that didn’t work out. It seemed like a lot of retailers (at least clothing retailers) started their sales early this year? Like I think some even started on the Monday!

The Sephora Black Friday (and Boxing Day) sales have been disappointing these last two years or so. Normally you can find something that you might be interested in buying, but they’re nothing worth lining up at the door for, you know?

I’d love to know what you think about the MAC lip scrub! I tried it out in stores (just dipped my finger into the pot to try the texture, didn’t put it on my lips – bleh) and it didn’t seem exfoliating enough. If you like it, then it might be worth it to take a second look! The Dazzleshadows are SUPER pretty, I didn’t know about them either until I was looking at their shadows in store one day.

    1. I bet they put security blocks on a lot of cards! They’re just based on algorithms that triggers an automatic lock… then humans have to sort out the mess, ugh!

Yes, i agree – a lot of retailers had “Black Friday Week” sales and they’d offer a special promo each day leading up the Black Friday. On the actual Black Friday they offered a little bit extra but it wasn’t amazing.

I kind of liked the buzz of going to the store early and “scoring” the deals but in reality, I could have bought all of those Sephora sets online and I have free shipping too. ๐Ÿ˜›

You’re bang on about the MAC lip scrubs – they’re not that scrubby! I only tried the Berry one so far and it’s more of a tinted lip balm than anything. I’m considering mixing in more sugar granules myself to make it more scrubby! But I do love the flavour and scent though so I’m not mad at it.

      1. Oh, you’re right about the algorithms. How annoying…retailers are gearing up for crowds of shoppers on Black Friday and credit card companies are gearing up for calls from hoards of angry cardholders haha.

I totally know what you mean about going in person for the buzz! Sometimes it’s nice to see the items in person too, anyways.

Ooooh, brilliant thinking about adding your own sugar into the MAC lip scrubs – I didn’t even think about that haha. The scents DID smell delicious, though! I might have to get one next time I’m in need of a scrub and copy your idea!

  3. Such a great haul! I didn’t do ay black fir day shopping, but I did order from Sephora the week before when they were doing 25 percent off.
That is so funny about your card! I have had that happen before and it is embarrassing! Luckily I can call my bank on the spot and they will unblock it so I can use it. Phew! Can not wait to see your clothing haul! โค

    1. Oh man, you bought things full price before they had the discount? That’s annoying.
I could have called them at the mall but I was done shopping so I went home to call since I knew they’d have a waiting time to get to speak to a live agent!

      Liked by 1 person

      1. Hehe no thankfully!:) they were actually having early black friday sales for VIB so I got to buy everything pre so I escaped the madness lol. Ughhh I hate the waiting! So annoying! Especially when it is something like a credit card. I am glad it worked out!๐Ÿ’—

  4. I only got a Zoeva set online as abit of a treat, but nothing else. I was a good girl. And your credit card being blocked is the horror of life. I have had it happen to me on vacation. Imagine being by yourself halfway around the world in a place where your debit card hardly functions and a 9 hour time difference with no way to call your bank until 1 am in the morning.

    1. I wanted to get that Zoeva deal from Beauty Bay but they don’t offer Zoeva to ship to Canada – so bummed.
Oh man, I have had my credit card blocked when I was trying to check in at a hotel in INDIA!!! And the thing was, I had CALLED my credit card company prior to my trip to advise them I will be travelling – dates and where I was going to. I was so mad! I got on the phone with them at the hotel lobby right away even with the time difference. I feel you!

  5. Such a great haul! Would be interested to see how you find the Belif products as it’s a brand that I’d like to try in the future. That and Klair’s appear to be talked about a lot. That is one awesome Kiehl’s haul! I would like to try more of their products in the future, I have only tried the Avocado eye cream and nothing else.

How is the Kiehl’s shampoo anyway? Also, does it contain SLS?

    Liked by 1 person

    1. I hope I like the Belif products as the regular prices are quite affordable too. Do you have The Face Shop stores in the UK? They’ve been popping up all over here.
I first got into Kiehl’s through their hair and body products and slowly started using their skincare – I’ve enjoyed most of their products although I do find they can be pricey.
Yes the Kiehl’s shampoo contains SLS… I personally have no issues with SLS, I love me some lather. ๐Ÿ˜›

      Like

      1. Ah no worries. I’m not exactly anti-SLS. I was trying to figure out what was irritating my scalp but I think it 100% is the dry shampoo! ๐Ÿ˜ณ

No, no The Face Shops here! UK is actually quite behind…we’re only just about catching with the K-beauty trend here but that is mostly online and mostly sheet masks and not much else! But I think it will make its wave here soon, since a lot of people know what k-beauty is now.

  6. The Sephora goodies look amazing! Those sponges sound good too! The MAC glitzy eyeshadow is so pretty. I didn’t know MAC did lip scrubs but they sound nice and the packaging looks fun!

I have only tried the Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Cream and Clinique cleansing balm from this list I think ๐Ÿ˜›

    1. I wore that MAC Dazzle shadow over the weekend and I LOVE it! I did some research online and people recommend using a sticky glitter eye base which is what I did and I experienced no fall out. ๐Ÿ˜€
Hehe, yes those sound like items I sent to you! I’m a pusher. ๐Ÿ˜‰

    1. Hehe, I wasn’t sure what to put as the title and Crack Friday just popped into my brain. ๐Ÿ˜†
The MAC lip scrubs are just ok – you can find better, more scrubby ones. I just love the scents. I might mix more sugar into them to give them more oomph!

  7. Oh what a haul! I’d definitely grab the Benefit set as well, it looks like such a bargain! I’m also kind of disappointed that we didn’t really have any impressive discounts here in the UK, but I don’t need anything at the moment anyways. ๐Ÿ˜€

    1. If you don’t need anything, then it’s good not to get sucked in on Black Friday deals. I feel like I did a mixture of replenishment and new things that I technically didn’t need. ๐Ÿ˜‰

  8. Nice haulage! I didnโ€™t do any Black Friday shopping outside of braving Walmart later in the afternoon to see if they had any left of the Roku streaming player they had on ad for $22 (reg $39). Wanted to get that for my dad for Christmas as we just changed our mobile plan to one that includes free HBO for life. Now heโ€™ll be able to take advantage of that.

Iโ€™ve gotten a couple samples of the Belief Aqua Bomb (the blue gel one for oily/combo skin) and I love it. Hoping Santa brings me a full size (or a Sephora gift card).

    Liked by 1 person

    1. We don’t have Walmart close to us – I always imagine Black Friday at a Walmart would be absolute chaos! So you were successful in getting the Roku player? How many dead bodies did you leave behind? ๐Ÿ˜†
Fingers crossed that you get the Belief Aqua Bomb under the tree come Dec 25th! โค

      1. Yeah I got the Roku player. Had to go to two different stores but I got it. Going later in the day helped me avoid most of the crazy people.

Oh and Santa brought me the Belif Aqua Bomb early! Boyfriend treated me to a few things at Sephora this weekend as a little pick me up as Iโ€™ve been cranky with getting over a cold & I gotta go to the dentist tomorrow to fix a broken tooth. ๐Ÿค•๐Ÿ˜ฌ

        1. Glad you found it!

Oooh I did not know Santa did early deliveries. I bet you’ve been a REALLY good girl this year! โค
I hope your visit to the dentist wasn't too bad and your tooth is all fixed now!

          1. Got my tooth out today. Worst part was the needles to administer the novocaine. They gave me scripts for pain meds. Took 4 hrs for the numbness to wear off. Feeling ok but super tired. Been a long day. ๐Ÿ˜ด

  9. Whoa now that’s what I call a haul! That cleansing puff looks interesting. And it looks like you got some nice looking goodies from MAC. Also, I’ve had that happen with my credit card once too. While on vacation! Not fun at all. At least they were able to get your card back up and running.

    1. I like those konjac sponges for face cleaning in the mornings in the shower – super soft and provides gentle exfoliation.
I’ve heard a few stories now of people’s cards getting blocked while travelling – so inconvenient but I suppose they’re just doing their jobs?

  10. Wow great haul! You’re much braver than me going to the mall on black Friday. That Bite lipstick set looks really good, the pink/red shade looks really pretty! Are those blending sponges from the face shop any good? I’ve been looking for an alternative to the beauty blender that isn’t crazy expensive.
That sucks about your card getting blocked, don’t they know people are Black Friday shopping!? It’s good they were able to unblock it quickly.

    1. Yes the blending sponges from The Face Shop are GREAT! Fantastic texture and really affordable! That’s why I stocked up.
Having to call customer service for credit cards is an inconvenience for sure!

  11. Awesome stuff! That jelly konjac sponge sounds great. I hope I can find one over here!

About the credit card… I used to work for one of the big credit card companies. We used to say that the card gets used to the cardholder’s spending habits. And guess what – it’s true! Anything out of the ordinary gets flagged up by AI right away!

    1. Those konjac sponges are my all time favourites! I’ve tried so many and I always go back to those. Plus, they’re reasonably priced even at full price.

Yup, I appreciate that the algorithms are matched to my spending patterns… I guess I haven’t shopped like this before. ๐Ÿ˜› Good job, AI.

  12. I don’t think I picked up any makeup on Black Friday! I didn’t really find anything I wanted/could justify spending money on… but that Dazzleshadow looks amazing! How does it swatch?

Sephora just emailed me a $15 off $50 purchase that expires tomorrow, I’m heavily debating on if I should buy anything lol!

    1. The Dazzleshadow applied beautifully! I treated it like a glitter eye shadow so I used a sticky eye shadow base. Here’s a photo of it swatched (not mine):

Did you end up picking up anything with your Sephora coupon?

  14. The MAC frost eyeshadow is so gorgeous! And yes, I can relate to a credit card being frozen. This usually happens to me when I attend trade shows because they have vendors from all over. So it will say I purchased something from CA then a few minutes later, I purchased something from WA, etc. I have to call them to unfreeze so that I can continue to purchase. Sigh. :/ But it’s all good after that.

Sucks about the credit card hold – I guess the security bots are just doing their job!
