Like a lot of you, I’m a sucker for cute packaging and I think Asian brands do them especially well. But, these products are not just a pretty face. Even though some of the packaging look like they could be cheap makeup for children, they’re actually quite good quality.
Here’s a sampling of some cute Asian beauty items I have – all of these items are either Japanese or Korean brands.
Sana Hiaruronsan Moisture Gel – $18 for 25g (unfortunately, I just found out this item is discontinued! Boo… I wanted to get more after I finished this)
I first learned about this from Lotus Palace (who, sadly, no longer updates her blog) and decided to try it. It contains hyaluronic acid and has a powdery matte finish once dried, making it perfect as a base for the hotter months. It has a bit of a baby powder scent but isn’t overwhelming. The little matryoshka doll container is too cute to throw away, I am keeping it to put beads or other trinkets in.
Tonymoly Peach Anti-Aging Hand Cream – $7 for 30g
Yup, it looks like a nipple. I received this as a present from a friend. I did not have high hopes for this hand cream – I had seen it online and dismissed it as a gimmick – but no! It is a fantastic hand cream with a soft natural peach scent. It’s not greasy and absorbs quickly and feels hydrating on my hands.
Face Shop Mini Pet Perfume Hand Cream in 01 Baby Powder – $7 for 30g
Another hand cream in a cute container. The baby powder scent of this one is a bit too strong for my liking, but the cream does absorb in quickly and doesn’t leave my hands greasy. I may try one of the other scents if I repurchase from this line – there’s a floral fruity one that I think I may like better.
Tonymoly Petite Bunny Gloss Bar in #09 Neon Red – $7 for 2g
I bought this 90% for the packaging, and 10% for the product inside. It’s just SO damn cuuute! Look at its little crooked half smile! There are a bunch of colours in this range and all the bunnies have different expressions. As a gloss, it’s pretty good – it has good shine and isn’t sticky, and imparts a slight pink tint on the lips, and it smells like candy. It makes me happy whenever I use this! I think most people can agree that Tonymoly has the cutest packaging around.
Anna Sui Minnie Mouse Nail Color in Midnight Purple 200 – $15 for 8ml (LE)
Don’t let the cutesy packaging of Anna Sui’s makeup line fool you – everything I’ve tried from her has been high quality and this nail polish is no exception. All of her products are scented with her signature rose scent, even the nail polishes! This one is a beautiful blue-ish purple with a pink violet shimmer – it wears well with base and top coat. The Minnie Mouse cap is a little cumbersome to hold but it’s not like I really bought this nail polish with the intent to actually use it. 😛 Anna Sui’s regular nail polish bottles are shaped like dresses. (Anna Sui is actually Chinese American, but the majority of her line is produced in Japan, where her brand is much more prominent than in the West.)
Bonus: my friend brought me back this cute pair of tweezers from her vacation in Vietnam (even though it’s a little Japanese Geisha girl, whatever):
❤
What are some of your cute or pretty packaged cosmetics that are good quality as well?
How cuuuute! I don’t have any… Yet.

Is tonymoly the best to start out with?! Or anna sui lipsticks 😍💄

Tonymoly! It’s cheaper and offers a wider variety. Anna Sui is a bit more expensive and specific – also, how do you feel about rose scented stuff? Cuz all of Anna Sui’s stuff is rose scented.

I don’t mind rose scented stuff. Is it strong??

I know, right? Are there good Asian beauty places in NYC? There must be! Or else you can order online – it’s usually much cheaper online (as in half the price) but sometimes nothing beats instant gratification!

They have a few in NY but I never have time to go 😑 I usually order from eBay, they have the best prices for Asian cosmetics. I can’t wait to check these out! Thanks for the post.

LOL, they’re really should. Sephora carries Tony Moly too x

LOL I need that yellow #8 bunny squishing its face in.
I am, perhaps a bit surprisingly, not too much of a sucker for cutesy packaging. I love to look at it, but won’t necessarily buy it.
This is actually the last thing I bought strictly for the packaging, or I should say, for the label (NSFW profanity):

I’d only tried one other thing from BlueQ (waaaay back in the day):

I can’t believe I still don’t have any Anna Sui stuff. I love the styling and the rose scent!

LMAO the hand cream. I’d love to put that on my desk at work! Side note, Jasmine FIg scent on the hand cream- how do you like that?
oh yeah, I totally remember seeing that lip balm duo at gifty shops.
Yes, you need to remedy your lack of AS stuff pronto! They had some AS nail polishes at Winners / Marshalls a while back.

The hand cream is OK. It’s a bit waxy/greasy. Works well, but I wouldn’t repurchase. The scent isn’t strong at all and fades really quickly.
Gotta keep checking Winners, then 😀

As soon as I saw Pukka on this post, I had to read it! LOL on the nipple comment. These Asian cosmetics have the cutest packaging, but I’m often hesitant to try them because I always think they’re not as good as they look. BUT, I’ll consider Tony Moly since Sephora carries it.

I too, used to think they were so gimmicky, but I was surprised at the quality. I want to buy that Tonymoly lip thing. I have a ring like that!

Tony Moly seriously delivers on the cuteness! I have that Bunny gloss on my “want” list for later 😉

Are the Asian brands as good in quality as like NARS or Tom Ford and our luxe lines here?
LikeLiked by 1 person
Oh yes, they have some very high quality lines especially the Japanese and Korean ones. One that comes to mind is Suqqu. Addiction by Kose is also quite luxe. They do tend to have more luxury brands just catering to skincare such as SK-II or Sulwhasoo.
Check out RAEviewer’s entry on her haul from Japan – she focuses on high end cosmetics:

Some would argue that their quality are better than North American lines! 😛
