Weird title for a post, huh.
Firstly: yay, it’s Day 150 of my No-Buy! Only 186 more days to go… (for those of you who don’t know, I’m on a yearlong No-Buy, but I had to restart it in Jan because I broke my No-Buy with a Target haul. My No-Buy ends on Dec 31st.)
Now, what does YDSMBSM mean? It stands for:
You Don’t Save Money By Spending Money.
It’s something my frugal bf says to me in response to when I try to justify my latest purchase, “I got such a good deal on it, it was 50% off!” To which he’d say, “You Don’t Save Money By Spending Money. You still spent money to save that 50%. If you didn’t buy it at all, then you would have saved 100%.” Party pooper. But he did have a point. π
Here’s a bunch of crap deals that I bought last year because I found them in the clearance section:
What did I need an orange eye shadow for? And a hot pink lipstick? I’ve NEVER EVER even worn that lipstick!
Let’s have a closer look at these “deals”:
Maybelline Color Tattoo 24HR Cream Eyeshadow in #10 Fierce and Tangy – $1 (reg $9)
I read somewhere that this could be used as a salmon colour under eye corrector. This is WAY too orange for my skin tone. I’m a fool.
These are really similar to each other, so I’m not sure why I had to have both. Oh I know why, they were $1 each, that’s why! π I’ve worn these shades maybe once each. I just don’t wear pinky coral eye shadow looks often – I think these may make nice blushes, actually.
L’Oreal Visible Lift Blush in #706 Berry Lift and #187 Nude Lift, L’Oreal Magic Souffle Blush in #844 Angelic – $1 each (reg $17)
The Visible Lift blushes have a spongy texture similar to the Maybelline Dream Bouncy blushes. These are not pigmented and do not last long on the cheeks. I do like the Nude Lift shade as a cheek highlight though.
Sally Hansen Fuzzy Coat nail polish in Wool Lite and Tweedy – $1 each (reg $8)
These are weird! They honestly look like fur on the nails. I’ve only worn Wool Lite (pink and white) and removed it the very next day because I looked like I had hairy nails. And what a removal it was – you think glitter polishes are a pain? The little confetti bar fur particles had to be scrapped off piece by piece even after using the foil method for glitter polish removal. It was a horrendous process. What possessed me to buy 2 colours? Only $1 each, sucker.
Elizabeth Arden Exceptional Lipstick in #49 Pink Vibrations – $6 (reg $23)
I got caught up buying these lipsticks in a range of colours because they were such a great price for such high quality products. I did discover my HG MLBB lipstick through this same haul, but what business did I have buying a bright cool-toned pink lipstick? In my mind, I thought I could maybe mix this with a nudey shade to tone it down. I’ve never worn this aside from lightly dabbing it on my lips and then promptly wiping it off. I’m sure some of you love this shade but it’s just not for me.
So, hopefully I’ve learned my lesson – I’ll likely be purging 90% of these items. Basically I could have ripped up a $20 bill and that would have had the same effect. Now whenever I spot a clearance bin at Shoppers / Rexall or see something at Winners that I didn’t even know I needed wanted until I saw it, I hear my bf’s voice, “YDSMBSM”.
You? What useless makeup have you bought simply because they were on sale? π
Wait. Is your no buy ovaaa? And love the title. I was highly confused. Lol

Wow, 150 days and counting! That is amazing, I’m doing just a no buy for June and it has been so tough!

It gets easier. It helps to remember why I accumulated so much stuff! Stay strong!

I’m almost at the end of my no buy month. Other than replacing my mascara (a necessity), I think I might try to stick it out for another month.

That’s great! It’s ok to replace necessities! Just not buying things that are redundant is the challenge! π

It’s sooooo tempting though! It’s a trap! π

Good for you! It can be so hard to resist clearances and sales! I buy so many lipsticks that I think I need but I probably only wear them once. I have 2 fave shades and that’s all I really wear. That clearance rack gets to us!

” I looked like I had hairy nails” << Literally burst out laughing at that. This post is the story of my life. I couldn't agree more!!

Ha! It did honestly look like that, I guess if that’s the look you’re going for! Those clearance sections are so tempting though.

Wow, 150 days – well done! Very confusing title, but there’s some wisdom in these words haha. I’m actually quite good not getting sucked into sales too much, or when I do I usually do get lucky enough to like the items! The only place I’m guilty of giving into sales just for the sales is Body Shop, last time I got a lipstick that I’ve used just once and before that I got a powder foundation. I don’t know who I was kidding with that but my skin can’t take powder foundations and I should have known better!
Also, you’re really gonna keep it up till the end of the year?! You must be really strong lol π

Yes I’m going to keep my No-Buy until the end of the year!
I too have bought stuff I didn’t need at the Body Shop – there are a few blushes from there that I’m probably going to purge because I just never wear them! (But they were only $5 each!)

Major props to you and whoever else is going through this no-buy torture. Haha! I plan on trying to stay off of the cosmetics after my trip next month (with the exception of my ipsy sub). I already have a list piling up as I’m typing this.

Okay but that lipstick is beautiful and I’m kinda jealous and I would’ve died to buy it for that cheap AND I would’ve actually worn it. π

I know, it’s definitely a shade that some people would love and wear. That’s how I was convinced by the SA to buy it – she said she loves it (in retrospect she was blond and blue eyed and would suit this!) and at $6, what have I got to lose? Ah well, lesson learned. π

Wow. I really admire your willpower. Congrats on 150 days buy-free!! I can’t even go 150 minut s! Personally, that hot pink Elizabeth Arden lipstick looks incredible!
Useless makeup I’ve bought were these hideous L’Oreal eye shadows in peacock green and peacock blue metallic shades. Never worn. I have a terrible pewter, YES, pewter-coloured lipstick from Bobbi Brown. Other than that, I try to pick my makeup really carefully as its so expensive!

oh my gosh, what possessed you to buy a pewter lipstick from BB? That’s not even an inexpensive brand, lol! That’s SA must have been convincing! π

She TOTALLY was! Sold it as “a product that will enhance any lipstick”. It just made me look like a corpse. Sigh. Lol!

That EA scares the crap out of me π LOL. I also cannot stand those fuzzy/bar confetti type nail polishes. NOPE NO NO NO. I don’t mind looking at nail art with them, but they just skeeve me out for myself.
You are a hero for being so good at your no-buy! I am awful at it. When I started taking DS out for walks every day, our grocery bills started to go up. DH is just like your SO…
Me: “I got this awesome deal at the grocery/Dollarama/Shoppers Drug Mart/Winners!”
Him (voice dripping with sarcasm): “You’re practically saving money!”
Me: -.-

hahahha I’m the same way, *how likely am I to use this product? not very…but it’s like 90% off, so I HAVE to get it!*
I was thinking about this the other day, stores/companies and their marketing strategies, it’s all about the wording. If you go to a store and say they have shirts that are $30. If you see it marketed as “buy 1 get one free” – that’s going to make you more attracted to it than if they had said “all shirts 50% off”…. THAT WORD FREE REALLY SPEAKS TO MY HEART AND MY BANK ACCOUNT.
Looking at the pink fuzzy nail polish makes me feel really uncomfortable..actually though. Something about the way it looks :S like cute mould maybe..if that’s even a thing..
LikeLiked by 1 person
Well the reason they do buy 1 get 1 free is so that they can move more units – if they just do 50% off, people would only buy 1. Them marketing people (of which, many of my friends are) are quite crafty!
Yes, it does look a bit like mould now that you mention it! Girly pink mould. Ick / aww!
