MUJI Skincare [+ GIVEAWAY!]

You probably know that I already love the MUJI skincare items that I’ve tried, so I was completely in my element at the most recent MUJI Canada Open House which was to showcase their skincare.
muji_skincare_2016_7
Similar to previous MUJI Open House sessions, it was a small intimate affair which I much prefer. 🙂 We learned about the different MUJI skincare lines with a focus on the Sensitive Skin range (my favourite!) and we all received a selection of products to try for ourselves. Here’s what we learned, and what we received.

MUJI Skincare is all about hydration. And that begins with the purest water source they can find. The water is sourced from caves of Kamaishi City in Iwate Prefecture, which has the same pH balance as our tears and is easily absorbed by the skin.  Currently, MUJI Canada offers 3 skincare lines:
muji_skincare_2016_2
Anti-Aging (brown packaging) – features 10 essential oil to prevent signs of aging
Sensitive Skin (clear packaging) – free of fragrance, dyes, mineral oil, paraben, and alcohol.
Organic Series (green packaging) – organic ingredients including jojoba, sunflower, lavender oils
And, we were advised that the Balancing Series (cream packaging) will be making its debut in Canada very soon! This range is meant for dehydrated and imbalanced skin types.

What’s so amazing is that of the items I received, nothing is over C$15! But don’t let the price point fool you – they’re made from great ingredients and they work. What MUJI doesn’t spend on advertising and fancy packaging, they channel into the product ingredients instead.  That old adage “It’s what’s inside that counts” certainly applies to MUJI skincare.
muji_skincare_2016_6
I also appreciate that MUJI has minimal packaging which is both cost effective and better for the environment. The toners and milks do not come with sprays or pumps – these are sold separately and the tubes can be trimmed to any length (the packaging even includes a ruler guide to show where to snip). The pumps are reusable.

MUJI kindly gave us a selection of skincare items to try for ourselves – the majority of the items are from the Sensitive Skincare range which would be suitable for all skin types. Here’s what we received:

Cleansing:
muji_skincare_2016_12
• Cleansing Oil C$14.50
• Mild Face Wash C$6.50
• Cleansing Sheet C$1.50
I’m running the risk of being a broken record about my love for the MUJI Sensitive Skin Cleansing Oil, but I’ll repeat myself until I’m blue in the face: this stuff rocks! Its base is olive oil instead of mineral oil. It cleans thoroughly but doesn’t strip the skin. And it’s so inexpensive! It was on my 2015 best of list!  😀

Toning:
muji_skincare_2016_13
• Toning Water Moisture C$10.00 + Spray Head C$3.50
What’s neat about these toners is that they’re offered in various moisture levels: light, medium or high; so you can chose the hydration level you prefer. I have the High Moisture Toning Water (shown above with the trigger style nozzle*) which I got in my June MUJI haul, and I adore it!  I’m working on a quarterly favourites post and – spoiler alert – it’ll be on the list. 😉

Hydration:
muji_skincare_2016_14
• Moisturising Milk Moisture C$10.00 + Pump Head C$3.50
• Moisturising Cream C$14.50
Similar to the Toner, the Milk Moisture (like an essence or serum) come in 3 levels of hydration too.  I’ve not tried any of MUJI’s moisturizers as of yet.

Treatments:
muji_skincare_2016_15
• Face Wash Foam Scrub $6.50
• Face Sheet (under eye patches) C$2.00
• Face Lotion Sheet (DIY sheet masks) C$2.00
The DIY sheet masks and eye patches are fantastic – I bought these in my last MUJI haul too.  At the Open House, they demo’d how to use it – all you need to do is put the little tablets in the toner cap and they expand.
muji_skincare_2016_4When you unroll the sheet, it turns into this:

This page has a video showing the sheet mask in action.

Tools:
muji_skincare_2016_16
• Pile Hair Turban C$7.50
• Cosmetic Blotting Paper C$1.50
• Portable Eyelash Curler C$6.00
I have the eyelash curler (shown opened*) and it’s my absolute favourite for travelling! I have the blotting paper as well, it’s waiting to be opened while I whittle down my blotting paper stash. 😛
muji_skincare_2016_18
• Cut Cotton Ecru C$3.50
I compared these to the Shiseido cotton here. Although not as soft (I suspect because they’re unbleached) they are super strong and I’ve bought the white version to try next.

Misc. skincare:
muji_skincare_2016_17
• Hand Cream in Lavender C$9.50
• Lip Cream in Grapefruit C$5.50
Both of these are part of the Organic range as denoted by their green packaging.  I have the lip balm in the Rose scent (shown opened*) and it’s really nourishing.

Another thing to note about MUJI skincare products is that many of them are available in travel sizes which are travel friendly (dur 😛 ) but also great for trying before committing to the full size.

Learn more about the Sensitive Skincare range here. All of the skincare products are made in Japan (yes, I checked all the labels).

Have you tried MUJI Skincare before?

    1. My skin is acting up too – odd little bumps and random dry patches. I scheduled a facial appointment for this Friday for some pampering!
We don’t have MUJI cosmetics here yet either… I had to trek to Japan for that! 😆 You do have access to the MUJI skincare though, correct?

      1. i don’t think we have anything! at least it wasn’t available last time I checked – and just went online and there’s not a single bit 😦 Whether stores might be different I’m not sure, but my nearest store is in London and on Oxford Street (which I try and avoid as it’s for tourists!) so have only been to a store once! There’s not many stores at all here!

    1. I really hope MUJI opens in Vancouver! So far they’re just focusing in Ontario but I can see that Vancouver would be the natural next market – makes a lot of sense. I want to try more of the organic line too – they have this product called All in One Essence that I am very curious about.

  1. Hey now, what do you guys need another Muji store for, you already have one! Haha, I kid…but I would love it if they could bring one to Calgary!
I have yet to start using the cleansing oil yet! I’m scared I’ll fall in love and only have a dinky little sample to use.
All of Muji’s skincare looks so…gentle, haha. I’d love to try the foaming cleanser and the moisture milk some time. I’m intrigued by the Balancing Series too, that ones sounds right up my alley!
Should I start a Twitter account (not to win your giveaway, but just so I have one)? I’ve been toying with the idea lately, but I feel like I struggle enough keeping up with the social media accounts I already own…

    1. Haha yeah, we now have 3 locations in fairly close proximity. I guess we just have so many more PEOPLE here. 😛
What, you need to try that cleansing oil pronto. I’ll be your hookup – I’ll send you more if you love it! (for a small fee – I kid, I kid! 😉 )
I can’t wait to try more of the MUJI skincare line – the organic and yes, the balancing series. I was somewhat surprised by how inexpensive everything is, to be honest.
Yes, just create a Twitter account. You don’t have to be active, but it’s good to be “represented” in all of the major social media platforms. I signed up for a bunch of social media platforms that I’m not really active on – who knows, in the future I might. It is time consuming! I try to limit myself to 1 hr a day max… PS. I’m still working on the logo. I have some images that I’m playing with but it’s not ready for review yet! 😛

      1. You guys have THREE? I thought you had just the one I visited, and now this new one. How unfair! 😉
Hehe, I like the idea of you being my dealer! I’m almost done with my current bottle of MAC Cleanse-Off Oil, so the Muji one is next!
Gave in and created a Twitter account! Will be slowly adding fellow bloggers in the next few days. Watch me abandon it after a week *sigh* No rush on the logo at all!!

        1. I know, I’m surprised we have 3! First one downtown, 2nd one in Mississauga, and the latest one at Yorkdale. 😮
Can’t wait to hear what you think of the MUJI one… high hopes! Plus, it’s like a third of the price of MAC’s.
eh, even if you abandon Twitter, no harm done!

    1. They don’t have a line for acne that I’ve seen, although in certain markets (Asia) they do have a whitening line. They also carry sunscreen in Asia which we don’t have!
Definitely give MUJI skincare a try – I love the fact that they keep everything so minimal and focused on the ingredients. I think we’ve been trained / brainwashed by media on fancy packaging and marketing lingo that we forget about the fundamentals.

    1. The DIY stuff are such a simple concept but I haven’t seen anyone else offer them! Where do you live? I’m always interested to hear where they have MUJI stores. Would you believe that the first place I ever encountered a MUJI store was in Dublin, Ireland? It was love at first visit…

  3. I love that they focus on the ingredients in their products vs. the packaging and and advertising! How often do you hear that? Almost never.
I still need to give that cleansing oil I won from your last giveaway a try…my skin has been throwing a tantrum the last few months so i haven’t introduced anything new to it for a while. ☹️️

    1. It’s so true! We’ve been so brainwashed with marketing. It’s really refreshing to get back to the core of the products – the ingredients!
Aw, skin can be so fickle. That’s why I can’t introduce too many new products all at once. Do you think travelling has havoc with your skin? Or just the changing weather?

  5. Wow!! It’s really nice of you to giveaway your haul!! You must be really passionate about Muji (dur 😂). I have an amazingly oily t-zone and everything else is dry so I’ve started skincare contouring using pore reduction around my nose and forehead. Everywhere else I use high moisture products. I wish there was one magic product. Lol. I’ve been meaning to try Muji since I read your post!

    1. Haha, I don’t mean to keep tempting you! 😛 But seriously, the 2 things I highly recommend are the cleansing oil and high moisture toner. I’ve also heard raves for the foaming cleanser but I don’t have first hand experience of it yet.
I too, really appreciate the simplicity of the packaging – we’re so brainwashed to think fancy packaging = better product.

  8. Pick a favorite. OMG, everything? Ok, I’ll pick one that called out to me. It’s the Cleansing Oil. I love to use an oil and then follow with a milky cleanser so I’m going to say that one! Fingers crossed! Haven’t tried this line and it looks AMAZING!

    Liked by 2 people

    1. Haha, it’s hard to choose, for sure! Yes, the cleansing oil is AMAZING! Good pick! I’ve tried so many cleansing oils – the MUJI one is my current favourite. It has a thicker texture and it cleans SO well. I’m amazed.
Thanks for entering and good luck to you!

  9. The Muji event looks like it was great! I really, really need to go check them out. I love the minimalist everything about the line. The masks are my favorite concept here – I like those sheet masks but I tend not to buy them because the packaging is not eco-friendly (1-use, 1 foil/plastic pack). The way they’ve done it is so much better!

And grapefruit lip balm looks awesome, ’cause I love citrus anything 🙂

    Great giveaway!

      1. EWWWW that’s horrid!!! I wonder how the companies are going to respond. I’m shocked that the products are folded by hand, actually. Seemed like something that would have been done by machine. Thanks for the link. I just ordered some Korean skin stuff, too, though no masks….ehhhhhhh.

        1. I’m constantly shocked how many production processes are still done manually. Ever watch “How it’s made” or “Food factory”. I figured it’s more expensive to set up equipment than to have piece work done by home workers…
I’ve got a bunch of sheet masks in my stash. You can bet that I’ll be scrutinizing them so carefully now! 😮

          Liked by 1 person

          1. I love watching those food shows! Yeah, I don’t know why it didn’t occur to me that if so much is manually produced even on those shows, the same probably applies to other industries. I did just use a sheet mask last night, hahaha. I haven’t seen anything odd in any of mine, but I also don’t use them too much.

  10. Everything looks so amazing. Love the minimalist packaging. Next time I’m in Toronto (crossing my fingers for early to mid 2017 since I’m not going to be there for Christmas this year) I’ll have to check out Muji! I have oily skin, but I think the item I’d be most interested to try is the toner! I’ve been really enjoying trying different toners lately! Thanks for the great giveaway!!

    1. Definitely check out MUJI next time you’re in town! They just opened at Yorkdale Shopping Centre – it’s probably easier for you to get to if you’re driving. The downtown location is only good if you’re on subway.
Even oily skin needs hydration! I really like the toner as a mist before I apply skincare in the mornings – it acts as a primer of sorts because it has glycerin in it. 🙂 Good luck and thanks for entering! 😀

    1. At first when I heard about the balancing, I thought it’d be geared toward oily skin but it states it’s for dehydrated skin. It seems all their lines focus on hydration and there isn’t one for oily skin specifically yet.
Yes those DIY sheet masks are a neat concept – I was puzzled at first until watched a video online.

I really enjoy going into Muji a lot 🙂 I went to the first one across Toronto Eaton Centre and i felt really zen and calming when i walked into the store. Their chocolate marshmallows and pens were what really caught my eye. Their chocolate marshmallows literally have chocolate in the middle and tastes like nutella! Their pens were so smooth, oh my goodness it’s impossible for me to leave the store without buying a few pens. I tried their organic lavender hand cream and loooved it! Muji’s organic skincare line is really interesting because there’s not a lot of organic skin care products out there. Muji’s got themselves a loyal customer for life.

I liked them but found them to shed/break apart more than I’d like. I’ll have to pop into their store to see if I like the white ones any better (you really can’t beat the value compared to sheishado).
