This Throw Back Thursday doesn’t go back too far, but it features the colour orange which is appropriate for Halloween coming up. Just 3 years ago, Sephora partnered with Pantone (the universal colour authority) to promote the colour of the year. In 2012, the colour was Tangerine Tango:
It’s a deep reddish orange that translates well into a variety of cosmetics products including blush, eye shadows, lipsticks and nail polish. Not being able to pass up anything limited edition, I bought this quad:
Sephora + Pantone Universe Color of the Year – Eyeshadow Quad
Firstly, the packaging. This really drew me in – when I purchased this, I had not gotten my hands on the Inglot Freedom System palettes yet, but now that I have the Inglot, it’s quite apparent that the Sephora packaging is a complete replica of that.
The colours in the quad are all shimmery, clockwise from upper left corner:
Sparrow: sooty deep brown (satin)
Pavement: charcoal with silver shimmer (more like glitter)
Scallop Shell: light peach shimmer
Carnelian: burnt orange with warm shimmer
This quad cost CAD $34 and contains 2.2g of each shade for a total of 8.8g of product, and was made in USA. It’s a fantastic value and pretty good quality. The two darker shades on top were slightly drier compared the bottom two but not bad overall. The only issue preventing it from being a standalone palette is the absence of a matte transition type shade, but it’s not a huge deal. I like wearing Sparrow in the crease, Scallop Shell for inner highlight, and Carnelian in the center of the lid for a pop of colour.
The 2012 Sephora + Pantone colour of the year Tangerine Tango was followed up with:
2013: Emerald
2014: Radiant Orchid
2015: Marsala
I will say here that I’m quite gutted that I missed out on Marsala this year, I really really wanted that blush trio palette. But I made a promise to my No-Buy, so I didn’t get it! 😉
Have any of you bought any of the Sephora + Pantone items? Any predictions what Pantone’s 2016 colour could possibly be? I’m thinking something golden / mustard or blue! 🙂
I’m thinking they’ll go with a yellow or a blue, as well. Not done those in a couple years, right? :p
That Carnelian looks gorgeous!
I’d check out Winners – I’ve been seeing the Sephora Emerald Pantone stuff show up…so maybe in 2017 the Marsala stuff will appear. LOL 😀

Yes, that’s my thought process as well for the possible colours for next year. They are equal colour-opportunists. 😀
Oooh yeah I hope the Marsala things will be available at Winners. Yeah I saw some Emerald stuff there – one of the palettes I own and of course paid full price for! 😛

I remember when they had this color of the year because I convinced my aunt to buy strappy sandals in this color! I was like yes totally in this year, maybe not next year. Lol

Ha, of COURSE you’d be the orange pusher – not surprising! Does your aunt still wear those sandals?

I remember all of these colours except for Emerald..like where did I go in 2013…hahah, I absolutely do not recall this!
I’d predict either something gold like you said, or something teal-ish!

Haha did you have a traumatic year in 2013?
Hmm someone else predicted next year could be a Peacock colour so your teal-ish prediction could be right too! 😉

I didn’t get anything from Radiant Orchid because it was so cool toned – but it’s a pretty shade. Oh yes, I think you might be onto something about the Peacock colour!

We will see in December when the announcement is made 🙂 You didn’t miss anything not buying any products from the Radiant Orchid collection, it’s pretty ordinary !!!

Yes, I’m getting into the Halloween spirit! 😀 I’ve also used the orange shade VERY lightly as a blush before – it totally works!

Well, I kind of feel like Radiant Ochid and Marsala have hints of pink tones… but who knows what they’ll choosing next!

I would be stoked if next years shade was a golden mustard kind of shade! I would love to see how that translated into cosmetics.
I really love the Pantone Sephora collaboration collections. It’s weirdly satisfying to have everything available in matching shades.
I totally missed out in the tangerine color which is a bummer because I really love orange! I did manage to snag a lipstick from the orchid collection and I have the eyeshadow palette from the Marsala collection.

Oooh yeah mustard eye shadows are awesome – I have the famous MAC one called Uninterrupted… it looks so ugly in the pan but is actually really nice on the eyes.
Well the Pantone colour of the year extends much further than just makeup / Sephora – they dictate everything from fashion, to interior design to car paint colours! I used to think it was a colour mofia / cartel. lol
Oooh I’d love to see a review on the eye shadow palette from the Marsala collection!

I have Uninterrupted too! And you’re right, it’s hideous in the pan but it “goes with” everything. If I’m ever in doubt about what to pair with a certain eyeshadow, Uninterrupted is the answer.
Since the Pantone color of the year is so wide reaching, they basically ARE a color mafia! Clearly, this is the best kind of mafia 🙂
Ask and you shall receive!
