The first “real” month of my self-imposed No-Buy, due to my overspending back in May / June. In August, I did pick up a few bits from the drugstore, and Winners, where else?
I’ve been surprisingly not too tempted by new launches even with all the Fall sneak peeks and clearance sales (no thanks to the ultimate Temptress, Ms. Ingrid! 😉 )
In the beginning of August I placed an order from Nova Scotia Fishman Xtreme Skin Care:
I just started using the seas salt soap and it’s divine! Thanks to Dal of Little Beauty Loves for raving about this line!
And I Back to MAC for 2 lipsticks and also bought a face cream:
On a separate visit my friend purchased these eye shadows for me as a late birthday present:
I did pay for this concealer (C$15.50):
But I would argue it was more of a need than a want (you’ll understand if you read my August Happiness Highlight! I was really desperate to cover my leg boo-boos) I’m not going to count it toward my accountability because I make the rules up as I go along! 😉
Found these single-use Yardley Apothecary skin and body masks / scrubs at a discount store for 10 packs for $1.
I also bought a couple of items from well.ca:
The Schmidt’s Ylang-Ylang + Calendula deodorant was what I was mainly after due to the rave review from Jodi of A Brash Attitude, and I’m nearing the end of my Lavanila deodorant. Then of course I needed another $14 for free shipping so I got the Badger balm which was 40% off. Because, winter is coming…!. 😉
In the mail, I received these items from NuWorld Botanicals for review:
The parcel included facial oils, serums, room oils, and a diffuser! I’ll be testing these for the next month or so before I provide my thoughts – stay tuned! 😀
Here’s a look in more detail at the 2 items I got from Winners:
I’ve been wanting more items in the Milk Made scent from Cake Beauty for ages since I love the hand cream. And when ClassicMaggie talked about it in her July empties post, I knew I had to hunt it down. So pleased to have found it! I already have the corresponding Supreme Body Mousse already which will use in conjunction with the shower gel.
I debated about getting this and now that I’ve opened it, I don’t regret it ONE BIT. I was first drawn to this because it is made in Korea, rather than in China. It’s amazingly soft and velvety, similar to the MAC Masterclass brush. Let me know if you want me to do a review on this one.
And finally:
Mrs. Strawberry Blonde positively raved about the classic Herbal Essences shampoos and conditioners. I was in need of both and spotted them on sale at Rexall:
$3.99 down from $8 is a great deal. I had a difficult time choosing and ended up with pink one (Smooth Collection) because I don’t have colour treated hair (but I loved the scent of the yellow one). Only to see this the very next week:
Ugh. Now dropped to $2.99! Why do stores to do that! So of course I grabbed the yellow ones (Shine Collection) too – they don’t have one for volume or else I would have chosen that. I’ve started using the pink ones and I like them a lot so far! Almost enough to reenact the old yes yes yes! commericals:
And to all the people (ahem Joyce) who think I’m breaking my Low/No-Buy, let me remind you that it only applies to makeup items. 😛 I don’t have as bad of a hoarding issue with skincare even though I do forget about stuff hiding in my closet from time to time! 😉
So my spending balance sits at -$141.68 and No-Buy continues all September as well. 😦 I’ll be back in the black come October!
How was your spending in August?
Have you started using the Schmidt’s yet? Looking forward to hearing if it works well for you or not!

Nope, not yet. I think it’ll be at least another 2 weeks before I get to it. I can’t wait! 😀

Really hoping that well.ca starts carrying the new rose scented one!

Me too! After you told me about the rose version, I was full of regret for ordering this one, only to find out it’s not yet on well.ca!

I used to love the classic Herbal Essences i think they’ve been discontinued here now as I’ve not seen them for years!
You did well on not buying makeup this month, helps that friends and back to mac have given you a hit of shopping without spending 🙂 and we can forgive the concealer because like you say that was really for health issues!

Hi Rachael
The original Herbal Essences products were discontinued in the UK in 2007 – but they were relaunched in 2013. You can find the originals at…

At the moment Boots has a 2 for £5 offer on HE, and the originals are £2 each only at Wilko, Sains and Morrisons at the moment. The originals are the exact same thing as back then. Awesomeness guaranteed!

If I didn’t know better, I’d think you were getting kick backs from Clairol! 😆

Ha! 😀
I wouldn’t even want kick backs – all I’d want is that they don’t discontinue the HE originals again.

Thanks, I knew you’d understand about the concealer! My friends say to not stress over it but I guess I’m vain! 😛
I think Sept will be difficult… although there’s a possibility that there might be a points redemption event coming up and I’ve got lots of points squirreled away… 😉

Nice job on your no-buy this month! 10 face masks for $1 is such a steal.
Oh gosh, that pink Herbal Essences shampoo (and the commercial!) brings back good memories, lol.
Just one more month and you’ll be back and the black, whoop!

Sept is going to be a LOOOONG month! 😛 But I’m excited to finally open some of the makeup from Japan, ahem. I’m so ridiculous, I’ve literally not even tried a single makeup item. I’ve only tried the Canmake eye primer (spoiler alert, it’s no good! 😦 ) and I’ll be opening up a Japanese mascara primer this weekend. But no actual MAKEUP item yet!
The smell of the Herbal Essences shampoo is so good! Orgasmic, even. 😛

All o the new products that you get to try this month should tie you over until you get to SHOP again! But wait – if you’re going on vacation, shouldn’t you get to shop? Teeehee.

I didn’t even THINK of that! 😆 Wow, you’re now finding loopholes for me, that’s awesome! 😆 I hear there’s usually good shopping on cruises, right? 😉

Yes, there’s supposed to be great shopping on cruises! Don’t worry, girl, I got your back 😀 If anyone calls you a cheater for breaking your no-buy this month, you point the finger at me!

Haha, I’m getting so excited on the shopping and EATING on the cruise now! I should bring my gym clothes too… 😛

Gym clothes have NO place on a cruise! 😂 the cruise life is about eating, drinking, and shopping!

Herbal Essences! Yay!
And the face and body masks look nice. What a steal! 🙂

I was quite excited for those masks! I know you have a mask hoarding problem… 😛
I must say, the HE conditioner is REALLY good! I think my favourite of any that I’ve tried! It leaves no residue / build up but smooths out my hair! You weren’t kidding! 😀

I’m glad you love the conditioner too. It really is the best. 🙂

Great post. I so need to do a low or no buy. I have boxes of stuff I’ve not used. Maybe I should set myself a low target like £50 to spend for September excluding essentials x

I’m glad I’m not alone with the “buying but not using” habit. Why do we do that?! Do you do the same thing with clothes? Buy them and not wear them for ages?
Yes, maybe give the Low-Buy a try for 1 month and see how you fare. It will help with saving up some money for the holidays! 🙂

I have no idea. I think I have so much stuff I can’t use it all. It’s got a bit overwhelming! Yes I do! I don’t wear stuff I buy for months either. True. What do you think is a realistic budget? I’m not including essentials like shampoo in my budget, I’m just trying to cut down on treats like eyeshadows and things I don’t need☺ x

I think £50 is realistic! It will allow you to either buy a bunch of high street stuff or 1 or 2 splurges. That’s sensible.

Funnily enough I was going to say the same! That’s my aim for the month☺ x

You already know the damage I did in August. But I did have some gift cards & bday money to use toward it all so the damage wasn’t as bad as it looked. 😂

Birthday hauls are the BEST! Haha, same, I hoard gift cards specifically to blow them all for birthdays or holiday time.

I love it, the ultimate Temptress, Ms. Ingrid! I also love the classic Herbal Essences. Nothing brings me back to Highschool faster than the scent of the chamomile one!

I’m serious, that Ingrid keeps @stashmatters me on Twitter and linking all the Sephora sale stuff! I was really tempted at one point but I had to talk myself down from the ledge! 😛
Oooh that chamomile one was the BEST! I’m not sure if the yellow version is chamomile or not? It just says Shine. I’ll have to check!

Lol! I love her recommendations too! I think it used to be called chamomile back 15 years ago. *Sigh* I’m getting old!
