Trash Stash: July 2016

It’s a holiday here today. It’s just called a Civic Holiday but the meaning varies depending where you live in Canada. In BC, it’s called British Columbia Day, in Alberta it’s called Heritage Day… very specifically, in the city of Toronto, it’s Simcoe Day. Simcoe Day is named after John Graves Simcoe, who founded the town of York, Upper Canada, which became Toronto. He was also the first lieutenant governor of the province. Now you know! 😉

Onward to the July Trash Stash:
trash201607_2
I’d call this month a pretty average month in terms of using things up, except for ONE epic empty that I’ve been working away at for YEARS.

Skincare

trash201607_3
Superfacialist Vitamin C Skin Renew Cleansing oil – C$13 for 200ml
I stocked up on these from Winners a while back and I’m just working my way through my stash. It smells like orange Creamsicle and the base oil is sunflower oil – what’s there not to love?
Stash worthiness: 9/10     Repurchase: Yes

Saje Sensitive Elixir Calming Skin Serum – C$19.95 for 30ml
I reviewed this! Here ya go.
Stash worthiness: 9/10     Repurchase: Yes
trash201607_4
Body Shop Vitamin E Hydrating Toner – $13 for 200ml
I’m not usually loyal to toners but this is one I’ve repurchased. It’s a thicker consistency compared to other toners, like a watery gel. It lives up to its name – it’s very hydrating and I recommend this for all skin types.
Stash worthiness: 10/10     Repurchase: Yes

Paula’s Choice Skin Perfecting 8% AHA Gel Exfoliant – $28 for 100ml
This is an OLD bottle. I bought it on clearance because PC was changing up their packaging. I’ve tried both AHA and BHA in both liquid and gel format and I much prefer the liquid format. The gel leaves a sticky residue on the skin. They’re both effective though. I am thinking of getting the lotion format next to test out.
Stash worthiness: 7/10     Repurchase: No

Smashbox Photo Finish Primer Water – $37 for 116ml
This stuff sucks – I reviewed it here. I ended up mixing some glycerin into it and a bit of rosewater too – it was more tolerable that way. And good riddance!
Stash worthiness: 3/10     Repurchase: No
trash201607_5
Delon+ Premium Cotton Rounds – approx $1.60 for 100 count
Another staple. I’ve probably got 10 unopened packs of this which I got from Costco.
Stash worthiness: 9/10     Repurchase: Yes

Fruits & Passion Green Tea sheet mask – $2
I never knew Fruits & Passion offered sheet masks. I suspect it’s due to its new-ish owners, LG, which also owns TheFaceShop. The mask is made in Korea, and the packaging looks a lot like TheFaceShop masks. There’s a good amount of serum in the pouch. The eye and mouth placements are good on these, but the sheet is too short length-wise for my face.
Stash worthiness: 7/10     Repurchase: Yes

TheFaceShop Konjac sponge
Speaking of TheFaceShop, this is my favourite face sponge. I probably use these for longer than is recommended.
Stash worthiness: 9/10     Repurchase: Yes

Haircare

trash201607_6
TRESemmé TRES Two Ultra Fine Mist Hair Spray – C$8 for 311g
This is my longtime favourite hair spray but I’m getting itchy to try something new. Any recommendations? I use hair spray mainly to tame fly-aways at the top of my head. I like a very fine mist and no residue or shiny “hair spray” look. And something that smells good.
Stash worthiness: 9/10     Repurchase: Yes

Curl Keeper – $17 for 250ml
This shows up every other month, it seems. I’m now using a hair mousse. I haven’t used a hair mousse in years.
Stash worthiness: 10/10     Repurchase: Yes

Bodycare

trash201607_7
Bath & Body Works Waikiki Beach Coconut Shower Gel – C$12.50 for 295ml
This was the limited edition version from 2015 – they changed the label artwork for this years’ version to show a coconut rather than a hibiscus. I still have another unopened bottle from the 2015 – I didn’t pick up any from 2016 and now I wish I had so I can compare. I heard that the scent was changed slightly (and not for the better). But, this one is great. I’m putting “maybe” as a repurchase since BBW might bring this back next year, who knows!
Stash worthiness: 9/10     Repurchase: Maybe
trash201607_8
Blue + Cross Cuticle Remover – C$6 for 473ml
This is the epic empty! I think I’ve been using this bottle for at least 5 years. I’ve tried various cuticle removers over the years from Sally Hansen, Avon, Mavala etc. But this one beats them all and it’s cheap as chips! There are only 5 ingredients in this with the key ingredient being potassium hydroxide which has a high ph (alkaline) and basically beats down the dead skin until the skin says “my apologies, I’ll just vacate the premises”. I decant from this massive bottle into a small squeeze bottle to use – about 2 drops per nail is all you need. I wait about a minute for it to work its magic and then push back my cuticles.
Stash worthiness: 10/10     Repurchase: Yes

Samples / Travel Sizes

I’m really digging into my sample stash lately – I’ve been making good progress!
trash201607_11
TonyMoly Aquaporin Water Bomb Sleeping Pack – this is my first sleeping mask and I liked it – doesn’t feel heavy and did provide great hydration.

Body Shop Vitamin C Radiance Capsule – I was curious about this and the SA gave me a capsule to try out. Glad I tested it – it felt more like a primer than a serum.
trash201607_12
Blinc Mascara Amplified – this was my first time trying tubing mascara and it was such a letdown. It provides no volume and hardly any length. And it didn’t hold a curl.

Blinc Eyebrow Mousse – made my brows crispy and clump together – didn’t like that.
trash201607_16
Coastal Scents mini Hot Pots Eye shadow in Chamois Nude – My friend got this in her Ipsy bag and passed it to me. I really like this for a brow bone highlight. RIP little guy (shown here beside a Canadian quarter for scale – Canadian quarters are the same size as American ones, hence we often get American quarters mixed into our change.)
trash201607_9
Mary Kay Timewise Night Solution – this is a gel serum with little coloured beads suspended. It was ok, but nothing mind-blowing.

Clarins Super Restorative Night Wear – this was nice but unremarkable to me. The sample only contained enough product for 3 uses so I can’t form a true impression of it except that it smelled good and my skin didn’t break out.

Biotherm Biocils Lash Optimizer – this, however, was love at first sight! I’ve had multiples samples of this and have a full size bottle which I’ll be opening soon. This is probably my favourite waterproof eye makeup remover – effective yet gentle and does not leave a greasy film.

Josie Maran Pure Argan Milk  – I discuss this product in the review post for the Saje serum, coincidentally.
trash201607_13
Biotherm Aquasource Gel – this is similar to the Clinique Moisture Surge Extended Thirst Relief but this is heavily scented and more watery.

History of Whoo Seol Whitening Intensive – this is a thick serum / paste meant to be applied after essence and before face cream. I focused this on my freckles and it did diddly-squat. This was a sample I received as part of a kit I bought 3 years ago now. Which I still haven’t opened. It’s on my next skincare hit list. :/
trash201607_15
Rimmel Stay Matte Liquid Mousse Foundation in 100 Ivory – I think I tore this out of a magazine. It’s actually quite nice – it does have a whipped mousse texture but is a bit liquidy (hence the name!) It doesn’t cling to dry spots and does keep the face matte. I’d consider buying a full size of this. The colour match is good, I might go for “True Ivory” which looks to be slightly warmer. I have another sample pouch – one pouch is enough for 2 uses.
trash201607_14
Cake Beauty Vanilla Cashmere Velveteen Hand Cream – a lovely hand cream in a limited edition scent – Milk Made is still my favourite!
trash201607_10
Body Shop Piñita Colada Shower Gel and Body Butter – I was excited for this launch but after trying the samples I decided not to buy the full size. The piña colada scent leans heavy on the pineapple, barely any trace of coconut.

Those are my trash stash for July – did you use up anything last month? 🙂

    1. It really is. I never thought I’d see an end in sight! Now I have to get another giant bottle. I’m going to write the date when I open it so I will know definitively how long it takes me to use it.

  1. Thumbs up on the Rimmel foundation! I have the full size of that. I wish Biotherm were still available in stores. My friend used to get me a bunch of samples from them when she used to work at Macy’s.

    1. I went to the store to check out the Rimmel foundation and it’s in the most compact tube – perfect for traveling too! I’m really considering getting the full size now.
Biotherm still has a good presence here – they have counters at the department stores as well as a section at the drugstores.

  2. I’m not really a fan of coconut but I do want to smell the Pina Colada scent from The Body Shop. I’m guessing it won’t be out here until later in the year to tie in with our summertime. I love the packaging and the sound of that Vanilla Cashmere hand cream too 🙂

    1. If you’re not a fan of coconut then I think you’ll like the Pinita Colada collection – it’s barely any smell of coconut to me! It’s very much a pineapple scent. Makes sense they’ll wait until your summer time to launch it!

  3. Ah, I totally missed this post yesterday! Too busy Heritage Day-ing it up or something 😛 How interesting, I knew each province calls the holiday something different, but never knew Toronto had its own separate name for it!
Haha, you finally got through that terrible Smashbox primer water! Good riddance indeed.
The Delon cotton pads from Costco are an essential for me, too! Started buying them a few years ago when I realized it was so much cheaper to get them in bulk at Costco rather than cotton pads from random brands at other stores. I use the scratchy side to take my nail polish off. What do you use them for?
Congrats on finishing the cuticle remover! That’s a big feat! $6 for almost 500mL is seriously dirt cheap.
Oooh, I’m still itching to try the Pinita Colada scent from The Body Shop, but haven’t made my way there to check it out yet! I love pineapples. Maybe if you mix it with the BBW Waikiki scent, then you will walk around smelling like an actual pina colada! 😀

    1. It’s so weird that our CITY has a different name for it. I also learned another city in Ontario calls it something else. Confusing. Did you have a good long weekend? 🙂
I use the Delon pads for my toner actually! I use the Shiseido crack cotton for my eye makeup removal, and for micellar water. Then I use the Delon for the toner. I use the scratchy side from time to to as an exfoliation on my face (but not around the eyes!) but mostly I use the plain side – I like that they don’t lint or fall apart.
Well funny you mention about mixing – I actually opened a new body lotion and it’s Cake Beauty Coconut cream or something and I tried mixing that with the BBW aloe gel cream in Waikiki – yummy!

      1. How interesting, you learn something new every day! My long weekend was BUSY. Unfortunately wasn’t particularly relaxing, but we did get a lot done! Hope you had a good one too! 🙂
Ahh, the smooth side of the pads would totally be good for toner! You’re right, the material is thick enough that it doesn’t fall apart when wet.
Mmm, coconut cream + Waikiki sound positively delicious!

  4. I totally buy those cotton rounds from Costco too – such a good deal!

Pretty sure I have that same Blinc mascara in my stash too, but I’ve yet to try it. I’ve never tried a tubing mascara, it seems like such an odd concept.

That Cake hand cream is taking me back a few years – I love their hand creams!

    1. Those cotton rounds are so good – too bad they’re only at Costco. I don’t actually have a membership there. I roped one of my MALE coworkers into getting them for me muahahaha.
I loved the idea of tubing mascaras since waterproof ones sting my eyes. And Blinc’s claim to fame is their tubing mascara but it was so lacking in both the volume and the length departments. Ugh. I hope it will work for you – maybe it will since we have opposite mascara preferences it seems! 😛
I only get Cake hand creams around the holiday time when they come in trios gift sets – such good stuff!

  5. Your empties posts are always epic! I don’t know how you manage to finish this much stuff, I must up my game 😉
I adore that Una Brennan cleanser with the amazing orange smell. So christmassy, I just wish they would change the packaging, I always manage to make such a mess of it.

        1. I had the Origins cleansing oil bottle for ages and was using that for the Superfacialist but then the pump got weird smelling (like rancid oil?) even though I washed it thoroughly. I had to toss it, sadly! On the hunt for something else now!

  6. Monday was a holiday for us as well. It’s Emancipation Day here in The Bahamas. I’ve given up on empties because I just don’t have the time to keep track today but I’ve always found doing empties so satisfying….cathartic. I’ll live vicariously through your posts. Lol. xo

    1. In my mind, empties posts are the opposite of haul posts. So it’s all about balance – I haul, I empty. Everything is right with the world! 😛

  7. I’ve been using the Garnier Fructis Full Control Anti-Humidity hairspray for years (because it lasts forever) and I really like it! It’s a strong hold but it doesn’t give me complete helmet head. Mostly I like that it smells SO GOOD. If you want a softer hold they have a variety of different levels so maybe that brand is worth checking out?
Congratulations on using up your cuticle remover! That has to be so gratifying!
Tubing mascara kind of freaks me out. I always get those weird tubes that just fall off of my lashes onto my face and look like super fat eyelashes. It’s gross. Not a fan. Obviously.
I get Canadian quarters in my change all the time! The little imposters! lol

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Ooh I’ve not considered Garnier hair products at ALL. I shall look into that hair spray the next time I’m at the store – thanks for the rec!
I freaked out a little seeing those tube of mascara / lashes in the sink. Like ahhh, my lashes are falling out / black alien worms are coming out of my eyes like from the X-files! 😮
Haha that’s hilarious you get Canadian quarters in your change! It must be all the tourists. And really, we’re short-changing you since our $0.25 is probably worth $0.19 right now. SORRY!

      1. Dang tricksy Canadians!! 😀
I just laughed out loud at the prospect of the X-files eyelashes. They really are completely unsettling!
I think the high hold Garnier spray is probably more intense than what you want, but based on scent alone you should totally look at the more flexible hold options. Plus it’s cheap so if you hate it it’s not a big loss.
